Tom Jones is a Welsh singer who has one of the smoothest powerful voices around. And he was a showman too, in fact he was a big heart-throb with the ladies. He has so many hits such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat?", "Green, Green Grass of Home", "She's a Lady" etc. He covers a lot of genres. He is still performing & is a coach on "The Voice" UK version. He also had a variety show from 69 - 71 & had some of the biggest music stars at the time.
I had the honor of seeing Sir Tom Jones live about a year ago. At 82 (at the time), he was still flawless. All the power, all the grace, not a note out of place. This song brought the place down. His band was incredible too, one of the best concerts I've ever seen. What I really enjoyed was watching all the older people dancing in the aisles... they likely did the same when they were younger, and there was joy on every face. What a night! The reason he's holding the mic far away is because of the power of his voice. Singers of his caliber know when to move the mic farther away and when to bring it closer.
Well caught, Bisscute. Sir Tom Jones had a very powerful voice. I heard once that recording studios were warned not to place the microphones too close to him. When they did, Sir Tom would blow the microphones with the sheer power of his voice. 🤯
This is an original, not written by Tom Jones (I don't think he wrote any of his own songs). The writer also wrote the 'theme' song for my hometown football team, Leeds United, called Marching On Together. Written in the 70s and the crowd still sing it today.
Same here. But we didn't watch it cuz dad was jealous!! HAHA Mom loved herself some Tom Jones. If somehow they had met and he said, let's go darling - I prob wouldn't see her again. Thanks Tom for not taking my mom. 🤣🤣
This was a big big hit for Tom Jones, one of the best known songs from his catalogue and a song now played at and sang by Stoke City football fans at their home matches
My first concert at 10 in 1972. The ladies were losing their minds!! Like being at a Beatles performance. Throwing their bloomers on the stage...I was baffled!!
I want to say back in the 70's on down most if not all were "live" performances straight off the studios sound console no editing just as it was done on stage. The 80's on down all is controlled with enhancing the vocals. I worked in audio sound staging and one can do magic on the console control systems.
Truthfully, I only recently subscribed because of your reaction to Hatfield's 'Unchained Melody'. You were enthralled by his performance, and you genuinely reacted honestly to it. Your appreciation of Jones is evident. We old folks of the '60s and '70s really aren't too much out of it as young people tend to think. Thanks for your videos.
I think your assessment of Tom's voice and the microphone is essentially correct. Watch Elvis live and you will see very similar technique being used. The technology at the time couldn't automatically adapt to more powerful singers meaning they had to hold it further away to avoid distortion and damage to the equipment (when opera singers are performing in an environment where microphones are used they are often on floor stands well out of arm's reach because they are used to projecting their voice to an entire auditorium/theatre - see Pavarotti). In that era weaker singers would be 'found out' because they had no choice but to have the mic much closer to their mouth. Tech has since moved on a lot so the internals can cope and adjust without the artist having to hold it further away.
What a great reaction to Tom Jones, he was a close friend of Elvis and when Elvis was playing the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas and Tom was playing The Flamingo Hotel down the strip, they would always try to get together in Elvis's suite because Elvis couldn't go out being a major superstar, if you would like to see more of Tom Jones performing live in hi prime from the 1970's try "Tom Jones Hits Of Medley 1978 Warner Theater, Washington 4/14", this is classic Tom Jones moving the hip, the critic called him "The Tom Cat" when he came to town here in Milwaukee. ❤
Tom Jones was on the radio and TV _all the time_ from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. "Delilah" was one of his biggest hits. He is also incredibly strong! I saw him tear a 3 inch phone book in half with his bare hands on TV! But how many people even know who the real Delilah was in 2024? 🤔🤷♂😯
"Doctor, Doctor, I think I'm turning into Tom Jones!" "Not another one!" "So is it common, doctor?" "It's not unusual." (Joke by courtesy of Tommy Cooper!).
I grew up hearing Tom Jones music. My older brothers often bought 45rpm records or LP. Listening to music on my dad's new stereo console as we took turns using it. Good choice.
The Tragic Truth by Five Finger Death Punch speaks to the internal struggle of the protagonist and the consequences of their own actions. The lyrics depict a person trapped in their own self-destructive patterns, seeking solace in alcohol and running away from the person they have become. The song confronts the idea of personal accountability and the realization that no one else is responsible for the choices they have made.
Back in those days, singers like Tom Jones weren't really heavily involved in the musical process. They were the singing talent, and famous song writers created the lyrics and music for them to perform. I doubt if Tom Jones ever wrote a song himself. That of course, does not detract from his amazing singing talent.
Oh yes Tom has written several songs the first one was I Tell The Sea (1965) Looking Out My Window (1968) and in later years several songs for the 24 Hours album (2008) Mr Jones (2002) Spirit In The Room album 2012 and more
@@michaeladler8716 That's not very many songs, though. The man was born in 1940. That's just the way they did it back then. There were singers gifted with singing talent, and there were song writers who were music theory and lyrical experts. The writers wrote the songs for the singers to sing.
Not a songwriter. So what. The group of songwriter, peddlers for decades were there for him. To bring up a sneeze moment of gathering with others to write a song went nowhere fast. Great performer great singer.
how much power did tom jones have in his voice back in the day how far away from the mic and he still sounds so loud and clear even with the technology of the 60's and 70's.... amazing voice he has.
Loved this reaction Biss, Early this year they tried to ban this song in UK because of the line with the word slave and the fact that the song describes stalking but thankfully it didnt happen, i love this song though.
Thank you. Please listen to his cover of Prince's "Kiss" with the group Art of Noise and to his "Sexbomb". Both are more recent hits of his, yet despite having more modern production his voice sings through. His live performance of "Sexbomb" on "The Helene Fischer Show" is easily accessible and stunning.
His voice is definitely very powerful. For the song he did together with The Cardigans, I believe they originally wanted to record them singing together, like at the same time, but Tom's voice was just so much more powerful than that of the lead singer of The Cardigans that it didnt work: if they set the levels to match Tom's voice, you basically couldnt hear the female singer, and if they set the levels to her voice, Tom's voice just blew out everything. So they had to record it separately so that they could set the levels appropriate for each of their voices.
Steve Page, of the Barenaked Ladies, was the only singer on that entire album who could keep up with Jones. The others just didn't have powerful voices.
Yes!!! Excellent choice for the reaction Miss Bisscute Sir. Tom Jones is one of the best voices in history, valid to this day at 82 years old, he is one of my father's favorites and last month he gave a concert in my country and seeing him live is incredible. He has not lost his voice. For future reactions I suggest to you his songs: It's non usual, She's a lady and Sexbomb. you will love them Biss.😊👍
Nice to see you back Bisscute and looking and sounding refreshed. My advice is slow down a little and don't over commit to doing so much almost every day online so that you don't burn out or get discouraged by overly critical trolls. Take some holidays away from your puter, even for just a few days to enjoy the real world. LOL A lot of people who hear Tom sing this song think that he must have been trained in Opera. But If I remember correctly he was a labourer who just loved to sing and is self taught. Just natural talent and abilities and I would say a gift from God. Even Pavoratti had trouble keeping up to him in their duet of Delilah. There are two songs that I highly doubt will ever be matched by any other singer in a live performance with no voice enhancements. This one and Unchained Melody by Bobby Hatfield on the Andy Williams show.
You should take a look at him singing this at Glastonbury about ten years ago think he was about 70. The crowd all forced a laugh at "She stood there laughing" and sing along.
I highly recommend Tom Jones’ Thunderball they used for the James Bond movie of the same name. As the story he goes, he nearly passed out hitting the final note!
He is a legendary singer, as his good friend Dame Shirley Bassey, another "powerhouse" singer. You can check the James Bond song "Thunderball" from him, it was recorded in one take!
That was impressive how correctly you used the slang term "nerfed" when you said how he needs to nerf his voice by pulling the mic away. Slang in a second language is very tricky

Yes he was pulling the microphone away because of the power of his voice. Or doing so could cause distortion and simply be too loud for the listener. A 70’s microphone would not be as advanced as a current one and was a common technique for people that like to really belt out a song.
Try another song by Sir Tom, "She's a Lady", came out in 1971, I think. Tom Jones was really popular back then. His live performances (which I never saw) were supposed to be really great, for his biggest fans. Women throwing their underwear at him, landing on the stage, made the news. I do know that. Never saw that, either, thankfully! But then, I only heard him on the radio, or saw him on a variety show on TV. Great reaction to a great song...thanks so much, and God bless you!
Hi, thank you for your passion for the music. Just wondering if you have ever come across Colin Hay. He was the front man for a band called Men at work in Australia. One of the best songs in my humble opinion was Overkill, wow what a voice he has but if you choose to listen to the song, then on TH-cam he is performing it with a choir it’s Colin Hay choir choir choir So with your comments about Sir Tom, he can still perform with the power and passion that he always has, but Colin will impress you ❤
Boy! Those were the good Ole days when a man could sing a passionate song about killing a woman because he was jealous that she was with another man, but he was very apologetic about doing it after the fact, while still basically insisting that it was somehow all her fault. You can't do that anymore!
The movie, "Romance and Cigarettes", sees Christopher Walken singing and dancing to this iconic Tom Jones song. Delilah was not a very nice lady....LOL.
I really like that you bring the classics to your channel, in those years there was no "neither trap nor cardboard", as they say colloquially, either you sang well or you could do something else, there were only those who were really worth it. In Spain, voices like Nino Bravo or Camilo Sesto stood out, and one of the most important voices in Spanish was that of the great Vicente Fernández, who died less than two years ago, one of the greatest idols of Mexico. I leave you a link to a video of him (the quality of it is not very good, but the quality of his voice... I hope to see your reaction). A big hug, here is the link th-cam.com/video/0peANtDLVdI/w-d-xo.html (by the way, the song is short and the lyrics, if you know some Spanish, easy to understand)
Yeah, Tom Jones. What's there to say about Tom Jones, other than he's Tom Jones. He's a Welsh singer that was a late stage crooner. Meaning that he came out in the 60s as the culture was changing, but he was still doing more of an older fashion crooner thing as it was basically dying out and being replaced by Rock N Roll, loved by the ladies, he had a few popular hits that are pretty beloved, and he's basically just stuck to still redoing the same thing ever since. Was kind of part of the nostalgic acts that used to play Las Vegas, kind of thing. Still around too, and not in bad shape for his age. I mean, he's Tom Jones! Kind of iconic, but also kind of a novelty. Some other of his most famous songs are "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat", and "She's A Lady".
Tom is also a great blues singer, which is the very basis of all modern music. You will actually have to look long and hard to find a better singer than Tom Jones! Trying to categorize him as a "crooner" is not at all accurate. If you only look at his late 60s and early 70s material alone he is just a basically colossal singer. You may not like him but take a step back and objectively analyze his voice and stage persona. He is as good as anyone. Period. And I am not a big fan, but greatness is greatness. 🤔👍
@@ToddSauve fair enough. Ha. I wasn't trying to insult you or Tom. I was giving a quick snap shot of my limited knowledge of Tom Jones as I've experienced in culture in general, to someone that knows little to nothing about him, but right on! Good for you and Tom! I wish you both only the best!
@@richiecabral3602 No insult taken Richie. I just could not agree with binning him in the crooner category. That was more of the Bing Crosby sorts from the 1940s and 50s. I'll bet Tom could still fill the concert halls in Vegas today. He is just that good at what he does. 👀😯😉
I didn't think I would see Tom again after this song came out. I was expecting cops to come on stage by the end of the song. Calm down, TJ. Gotta give your lawyers something to work with, bro.
If you are looking for another song and artist that performed on the Ed Sullivan show, may I recommend Vanilla Fudge doing a cover of You Keep Me Hanging On. Worth the listen.
When i was just a small kid we went on holiday by car to Portugal. We had Tom Jones on cassette tape blasting true the speakers during the vacation. Together with Tina Turner, BZN, Vaya Con Dios, Genesis and a few others. When hearing this song, i see flashes from this holiday true my mind.. Happy times.. Thanks for sharing.

Sir Tom has been a coach on the VOICE UK for years and he sings many songs during the season, many times. He still has a powerful voice.
Tom Jones is STILL a great singer in his 80's.
I like this video. I always like watching the conductor groove to this song.

4. I heard that this song was sung by Homer Simpson in the shower after he got to leave church early.
Loved your reaction and I loved the song which I don't think I had heard before, but I thought it was great!
Thank you so much
I can understand why we were banned from singing this. Still a great song 🏴🏴
Toms always good
He used to tour Australia 🇦🇺
Always loved singing with our ledgen
John Farnham He has power house voice and has to hold 🎤 long way away
Look up Tom Jones John Farnham a long way to the top duo of AC / DC cover pick live version
Background on John Farnham he has title the voice down here as can sing almost every genre equally as well
He has 6 decades of hits I'll list two off his song to give you a taste of he's talented and power
Look up john Farnham HELP with Melbourne symphony orchestra Beatles praised him for his version
Other one Look up john Farnham VOICE with Melbourne symphony orchestra
Many Ballard's opera theatre jazz blue duo's with other celebrities and another Aussie ledgen Jimmy barnes powerful voice with a growl in it
I promise you won't regret it no one has yet
Cheers young lady 🦘🇦🇺👍
Yes he was pulling the microphone away because of the power of his voice. Or doing so could cause distortion and simply be too loud for the listener. A 70’s microphone would not be as advanced as a current one and was a common technique for people that like to really belt out a song.
I think he made the best sing according to him🎉❤
Tom Jones would really love to see you. So does everybody.
Else. Bye bye. I don't get a hug. That's not fair.
Madalina, about Ed Sullivan, you would love Topo Gigio, who dropped by often on the show (but avoid the chicken skit).
Thank you for suggestion
Gorgeous and love your accent ❣️
I could see this song being popular in a karaoke situation.
Hi, thank you for your passion for the music.
Just wondering if you have ever come across Colin Hay. He was the front man for a band called Men at work in Australia.
One of the best songs in my humble opinion was Overkill, wow what a voice he has but if you choose to listen to the song, then on TH-cam he is performing it with a choir it’s Colin Hay choir choir choir
So with your comments about Sir Tom, he can still perform with the power and passion that he always has, but Colin will impress you ❤
love ur channel
Boy! Those were the good Ole days when a man could sing a passionate song about killing a woman because he was jealous that she was with another man, but he was very apologetic about doing it after the fact, while still basically insisting that it was somehow all her fault. You can't do that anymore!
Love you Bisscute
Hi Biss, Great reaction .You should also hear the version by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. It's amazing
Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink had many ladies undergarments thrown at them back in the day.
I love your reviews !!!
Thank you
This was great!!!
Tom Woodward.
Whoever wrote this has no idea.
Great reaction! If you don't know *Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World* then please consider reacting to it.
This song was playing in the white Bronco
I always thought this was Tom’s song. Delilah isn’t laughing anymore for sure.
Best murder song ever.😊
Boone Vincent. Papa Don't Preach.
A Tom Jones reaction, my first thought was will we see Danish Pete on guitar.
Thousands have sung Delilah 😂😎
If you are looking for another song and artist that performed on the Ed Sullivan show, may I recommend Vanilla Fudge doing a cover of You Keep Me Hanging On. Worth the listen.
Thank you for suggestion
I love your smile❤
I like the way you roll your r's
Please watch Dire Straits Telegraph Road live…best outro in rocknroll history 😊
When i was just a small kid we went on holiday by car to Portugal.
We had Tom Jones on cassette tape blasting true the speakers during the vacation.
Together with Tina Turner, BZN, Vaya Con Dios, Genesis and a few others.
When hearing this song, i see flashes from this holiday true my mind.. Happy times..
Thanks for sharing.
Tom Jones - yummy. Check out an older Tom performing with Alison Kraus. There is film out there somewhere.
Greetings from CDMX 🥑🌶🌽🌵
