BEST CRUISE LINE? COMPARING DISNEY CRUISE LINE, PRINCESS CRUISES and CELEBRITY CRUISES

  • I was asked yesterday after being on the Disney Magic, the Sky Princess and the Celebrity Apex how do they all compare. Well that is a question with a complex answer. In this episode, I break it down. Plus I have a story about my dining room server on Disney. I don't think my Disney server liked me.

It’s rude to walk away someone mid-sentence regardless of who walked in the room (except an emergency). I took a 15 night cruise to Hawaii on Princess and the staff was amazing. They never tired of seeing my face (15 days is a long time, lol) and were always courteous to each and every person.

You were absolutely right about that service snafu. You don't have to apologize. The waiter was completely wrong not to finish with your order, in fact, with your whole table's order, before he left to wait another table. That was just plain RUDE. I would have been angry too, and would have reported the behavior to guest services. Such behavior reflects badly on the cruise line, and should not be tolerated. I would have also made sure not to have the same waiter in the future.

It is weird and unacceptable for a waiter to walk off in the middle of taking your order to greet a dif customer.

That behavior was 100% inappropriate. I always am ready for failures like that by uttering" call the Maître D "? It's only happened once to us and I spoke up. They offered us a much better table and a bottle of wine.

Celebrity is my favorite of any line. Their ships are far and away more innovative than any other line I’ve sailed. The food is amazing and they even innovative ways of serving the food at LaPetit Chef! The buffet has stations for almost every type of food you can imagine. I also love the Martini Bar. The shows are top notch and original.

I agree. The different food stations are the best part. The entertainment is top notch. The martini bar? LOL. I never had a problem finding my wife. If she wasn't at the martini bar she was in the casino.

Took my first Princess cruise 2 months ago and the next one will most definitely be on Princess. Love the medallion technology and the food. We booked the package that included drinks, tips and WiFi. It was great worth the extra money to not worry about paying a bill before we left. Besides we had a lot of cruise credits from other cancelled cruises to cover the extra charges.

Thank you for addressing my question. The reason he left you like he did, was that customer was one that started tipping him from the start of the cruise. I have seen that happen. I found if you tip the cabin person the first day of the trip, you get even better attention the rest of the cruise.

In September 2022 will be my third cruise on Celebrity. To be honest I have only cruised on Celebrity, and I love this cruise line. But after listening to you talk about Princess, I just might try them out. That medallion sounds pretty cool. Opening your cabin door without trying to find your key card; and ordering room service to be delivered where ever you are on the ship. Wow!! And being able to track down your cabin mate would be such a time saver!!

I’ve cruised on 10 different lines and my favourite cruise line for quality of food is Celebrity. Disney was actually my least favourite in regards to food quality, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The cruise line that I thought was the poorest in entertainment was Holland America. Unfortunately I haven’t been in a cruise since Feb. 2020 and am not planning any until the complicated rules disappear. Thanks Tony for your very entertaining videos! If I could, I would subscribe more than once to help your numbers!

I’ve been on a few cruise lines. Have done Disney 13 times. A few Royal and Celebrity. One Holland and one Carnival. Why do we keep going to Disney, a few things. We love the split bathroom on Disney so convenient. The rotational dining as well. On the other cruise lines it gets boring to us being in the same dinning room every day. Never have had an issue with servers, we like the fact that you have them for the entire cruise. We don’t have any small children anymore, but we enjoy the structure of Disney. We’ll be going on the Disney Wish in August so I’m very excited. Love your shows.

Hi Tony, We are aboard the Ruby Princess, 14 days round trip San Francisco-Hawaii and loving it. Just one point - The personal medallion tracking feature only applies to your on-board shipmates. Those on the same cabin are automatically added but others have to be accepted by you to be included, so inadvertent tracking is not a factor. Also normally Princess offers two production shows on 7 days trips and 3 on 10+ days. Glad you enjoyed the Princess features and thanks for the objective and unbiased comparisons. Looking forward to cruising with you or Don one of these days. Stay safe, good luck on your WW program, and keep those videos coming. Neil & Sandy G.

Princess Medallion is wonderful! I was able to track down my two sisters and find them no matter where they were. Ordering food & drinks anywhere on the ship was so convenient. My favorite line is whoever has the best price when I want to sail. We live between Canaveral and Tampa, occasionally drive to Ft. We sailed on the Disney Wonder in 2009. It got us hooked. Five years later, we started to sail on Princess and now it's been 8 times. The last cruise was when they were Beta testing the Medallion, so they gave us both a medallion and a card. At that time, it was mostly for opening the cabin door and general ID like the plastic card. We will be sailing on the Grand in about 6 weeks and I am looking forward to full Medallion experience. Thanks for sharing :)

I am 68 and cruise with my children 49 & 41. We go to relax and normally don’t do any shows so entertainment is not a priority. Getting three beds on the floor is priority. Here’s my favorites in order when selecting a trip:
#1 - NCL - Best Spa - good balance between adults & kids - “Have it your way” goes far - formal night is optional (many don’t do it), ships are big enough that it doesn’t seem crowded anywhere, you can wear shorts in the dining room, food and service very good - Great European selection, could be better for Caribbean
#2 - Princess - It’s a boomer cruise - gym is busy - 50 to 70 age group trying to be healthy! Walking deck packed. Hard to get a chair at the pool. Formal night participation popular, smart casual dining, service good, used to have great seafood but is now sustainable so mostly salmon
#2 - Royal Caribbean - good balance between adults & kids - especially the adult only solarium, service and food is good - Great Caribbean cruises
#2 - Celebrity - seems to have lots of added charges - poolside cabanas, etc. - formal night observed, service and food good but thought it would be better - good Caribbean options
#3 - Holland - Great group of mostly older people - easy to get a seat at the pool cause they are all inside. No one bothering to sell you drinks at the pool - the older crowd is wine and high dollar dinner drinkers . Last time I did Holland the same meal in the dining room was served in the buffet at night - that was kind of nice- just not as fancy as sitting in the dining room - small ships good for Alaska
#4 - Carnival - We call it the hog trough ship - lots of families with lots of kids - everyone scooping up the buffet - dining room ok, service and food ok - will do if desperate for a vacation

I will always be a Disney cruiser, mainly for their service and style of ships. I love the fact that their ships are based on the classic ocean liner with their colors and interiors. I adore their service especially with their waiters. They’re people that you develop friendships with and being able to request them on future cruises is awesome. The adult areas are very nice as well and personally I think it’s a great line to cruise on if you’re not cruising with young children. I can definitely see where you were coming from with your opinions with DCL, especially with Disney Magic which is why I prefer Disney Fantasy. Princess and Celebrity are of course fantastic lines with great quality, however I will always prefer DCL.

The week after your cruise there was a second production show on the Sky Princess plus there was a special violin show that was exceptional. I loved the medallion. We would order lunch on Deck 18 in the sun and it would be there in under 15 minutes…incredible. I also have to mention that you could order any plain protein in the dining room and they would prepare it for you. The buffet always had steamed vegetables and a lean protein. We ate in the dining room the first week and the buffet the second week. It was awesome to finally meet you and Jenny! I wore my locafam bracelets every day!

Very objective review for "this is cruising now". I so agree about Disney food. Since our first two cruises on the Disney Magic in 2004 and 2009, we feel the dining has gone from a very good restaurant to what Denny's might be if it tried to serve lobster and escargot. Other than DCL, we have only been on Celebrity Solstice and we enjoyed most of that (we are not casino people and we did not like the sales hawking outside the stores on our way to dinner). We like the smaller DCL Magic and Wonder but were impressed with all of the shipboard amenities of the Fantasy (and Dream). Thanks for the review and sorry it rained on you (it rains on the mouse, too).

We wanted MORE! If they add one more show on a 7 day, I’d be so happy. I did learn that the Medallion is very helpful with COVID tracking. Some great, well balanced comments Tony. I think the entertainment issues are somewhat pandemic influenced and due to re-start pains and hopefully will be ironed out heading into the Fall assuming the pandemic remains cooperative. Celebrity, HAL, and Princess compete in the similar demographics in the premium sector - HAL and Princess are under the same executive management. The commonality on service, food quality, and cabin amenities should be neck and neck subject to personal preferences and categories. Looking forward to a future HAL and Virgin review from you!

Hey Tony…. FYI we were just notified our NCL Baltic cruse in June will NOT be stopping in St. Petersburg Russia , In fact NCL will not be making that port for the remainder of 2022. Enjoying you channel!!

The waiter was rude! I like the idea of a buffet that offers on demand grilled protein. Thank you for your comparison of the three lines. I can’t wait for my Princess Cruise. No medallion the last time we cruised.

We've cruised on 57 ships, and we love Royal Caribbean. We've sailed on Princess and NCL. NCL has great food! We'd love to sail Celebrity, but we get many of our Royal Caribbean cruises for free from the casino! We enjoy your channel and love your positive energy.

Absolutely on point about the Medallions! It would be hard for us to change lines after taking six Princess cruises this year and getting used to ordering an Americano from the hot tub!

Oh Tony. That was how I felt on the Rotterdam. There were so many dignitary on board and several times the staff shifted off to those tables and there you were for long periods of time with no service. I won't do inaugural cruise again.

Have not cruised Princess but truly love Celebrity for the amazing buffet. We did not get a big production show in January but they flew in a singer and a trio of rock singer/ musicians instead. Wonderful!

I love cruising but I avoid ships with strict dress codes. I love Norwegians dress code, next would be carnival. My closet consists mostly of shorts and running apparel, ie running pants.

Just went on Celebrity Apex for our honeymoon and we were so spoiled!! I don't think we'll be able to go on another cruiseline afterwards. Please send my love to Benji and Nitish the bartenders in the Eden Bar!!! Love your shows, Tony! I was so excited to see you on the Apex this week!! 😁

Hey Tony I'm your neighbor on the MSC Meraviglia next door today! Hope to.meet you and your lovely wife sometime soon! And for the record princess rules!!! The wifi on msc is expensive slow and limited! I be lieve they sold their wifi package to a private company! $201 for two to have "streaming " while princess was only fifty a person and much faster. Better quality of food on princess and larger selection! They only got me on msc because it was free trip! Under 600 passengers on a ship that hold thousands! Missing child announcements last night after the show! Will keep you posted if the found him/her!

Love, love the Princess Medallion features now! We were part of the "test & evaluation" passengers on the Regal Baltic itinerary, September 2019. Funniest: a family member ordered a bucket of ice to be delivered to his cabin late afternoon. It didn't arrive to his cabin. Then, pre-dinner, when we were in Crooners, the bucket of ice was delivered to him AT CROONERS! But the kicker was when, hours later, after dinner and the production show, we returned to Crooners and yet another bucket 🪣 of ice was delivered to him there/then!!! The bartender did not appreciate the humor, but we did! Princess has had time to work out the bugs, and we now love it.

The medallion was the greatest. We cruised in November 2019, still ironing out the bugs, but it was just great.

Thank you so much for this video. I learned a lot. I hope you do more comparison videos in the future featuring other cruise lines. Most of my cruising experiences have been on Norwegian ships (went on one Carnival cruise), but I have been interested in learning about others. I also like going to the casinos on board, so if you do more of these kind of videos, I'd like you to touch upon those too. Again, thanks so much for this informative critque.

Hey Tony, I recently cruised on Princess and there is a feature on the LED screen outside your cabin door…you can choose DO NOT DISTURB or MAKE UP ROOM, when we had our DND on our room attendant never so much as even knocked (it would highlight the screen with a red bar) I actually didn’t discover this till the third day. I have cruised on princess and celebrity and princess wins for me, I love the medallion!

Super good comparison of the 3 cruislines, Tony. Have to say, though, having now done 10 Princess Cruises, with 4 more booked in the near future, I guess you can guess which cruiseline we prefer, and for all the reasons you mentioned, including the x-factor. No, Princess is and has never been geared to the young and venturous as much as Royal Caribbean, or Carnival, and that's how we, being seniors, prefer it with Princess. We have been on Celebrity and really enjoyed the time we had with that cruiseline, especially around New Zealand and Australia, but I think we're hooked on Princess and will always be. Thanks so much for your indepth comparisons. Not having been on Disney at all, we can't comment. Take care, and continue to enjoy your time on the Apex. ....Oh, and as for the bad service of your waiter, that would really upset me, too. Just my thoughts.

I've done both. Princess was fine. Celebrity was incredible. Both 12 days. Both British Aisles. But food, service, ship, and entertainment, I prefer Celebrity by a mile.

We have family members who cruise Princess Exclusively - and have upgraded to suites for the added perks (hooked after a complementary upgrade). We will cruise Princess at some point (possibly Alaska as they and HAL have an edge in that space)… Celebrity has a bit of an edge for us since our loyal to royal points crossover. The celebrity expedition Galapagos experience is also on our bucket list… if we could either find a more adult experience or take kids on Disney we’d look for a deal to try that experience

30 cruises and have done all except Disney. My favorite by far is Royal. Great ships, food, entertainment, and price. Plus Perfect Day can't be beat for a private island. The Oasis Class ships are great if you are traveling with a larger group...so much to do. Celebrity is special, but all their ships felt the same. RCCL also has a great loyalty program...Diamond club rocks.
