My son (19 yrs. old) recently brought a used 2006 crv with 80,000 miles on it.
I put some money into it to get it mechanicly and visibly up to speed.
This video has given me great confidence in this vehicle.
    Great job, and excellent driving!

I have geolanders on my 2003 Honda CRV, 215/70R15 with a roof basket too. Im getting 19mpg. Also it struggles on hills and passing, its strictly a slow lane car. Everything else is stock. I blame the 4 speed automatic. Im willing to bet the 5 speed manual in this generation perorms much better. It needs that shorter gearing with the extra overdrive freeway gear 5.

My wife's car is a 04 CRV with a manual transmission. I'm 52, and have owned many vehicles along the way. The CRV is far and away the best vehicle I have ever owned. You CANNOT do better for the money and dare I say twice the amount. Can something with higher clearance do more? Of course. More aggressive tires (of proper CRV size) will certainly help, but the CRV is an extremely agile and capable offroad vehicle. Get one while you still can. Unless I'm "rich" and don't know it, they are cheap to fix too. Not that anything ever breaks.
Love, love, love our 04 CRV!

It would be even better if it was diesel. Diesel's strong points are perfect for an off road / hauling car, strength, torque all while returning good fuel consumption. Such a shame the american government is so anti-diesel. All american trucks would benefit a lot from having diesel versions

@@demoritzz5327 It's the EU bullshit. The EU has only harmed Germans and European peoples
Germany is one of the greatest countrys on Earth, at the forefront of science and technological advancement! before the EU German companies like VW and BMW were advancing fuel technology so much, they make the best diesel engines in the world, not these EU parliament laws are trying to kill all those years of technological advancement, by going after fuel in favor of electric (which actually harms the environment more than fossil fuels, cause of the batteries in electric cars)
I honestly believe that clean fuels are the future of energy, not electric transportation. Ethanol and Biodiesel (like Rudolf Diesel originally planned), they are clean and renewable, they are cheap since they're produced from organic elements and anyone can make them, and ofc they don't harm the planet like electric vehicles powered by batteries, with their toxic components (plus the mining for minerals, that harms the planet in a huge way)
I sincerely believe that Rudolf Diesel was one of the greatest visionaries to have ever lived, he does not get the credit he deserves for creating Diesel!

"off-pavement" would be more accurate, but it did well. Lifting a wheel in modern vehicles is pretty common because modern suspension is so inflexible.
I don't when the change happened, but I had read the early CRV 4wd system was pretty tough, the later ones, not so much.

Here is the reason for not buying a tacoma and 4runner as I have owned all three.
    1) 2004 CRV and all Honda's have the most comfortable seats among all Japanese cars. Toyota is the worse
    2) Honda CRV will be better suited for family and has better gas mileage.
    3) I have 289,000 miles and as much as I abuse it, it goes on and on and is trouble free.

Ours wasn’t AWD, but still a great little car. After our CRV, we bought an Odyssey, and now we’re on an AWD Pilot that so far I’m loving. We have loved our Hondas. As of now we’re on our 4th one. I have a 2006 and have done one test run to try to get it stuck (with my friend driving his off road equipped Jeep CJ as Rescue 1). I don't recall that much tire spin. I wonder if Honda made some adjustment to the all wheel drive system between '04 and '06. Anyway, it totally surprised me how well it will do off road, for which it really is not designed.

the drive shaft as well, Every mechanic mentions that.

  • @austinl.2703

That was a very polite test. I see the 1 tire spinning in the air and I wonder why the other 3 don't turn for the car to just keep gong forward. It's All Wheel Drive but all the wheels aren't driving.
I see it slip and grab going up the hills in soft dirt so that's good. I can put chains on mine to drive in the snow. Just in residential areas (not on the highway).
    It's a good little car.

How fun! Not really "off road" though. The biggest limiting factor on CRVs, in my opinion, is the general lack of ground clearance. Early 2000s, late 90s were somewhat better than the newer ones. And, of course, Honda has never claimed they were off road capable. On a muddy road like that they will get you through if you have good tires and a smart driver.

The Honda CRV AWD system is a little slow in engaging. If you watch the video back you'll notice the front wheels aren't even turning, so it hasn't engaged the AWD yet if you'd given it literally a few more seconds it would have engaged.

I have my 2006 as first car. Second owner.the first owner only put 90k miles so it is in pretty good shape. My concern is in the snow, I live in DE and we are getting a low of snow for this winter and of course ice, I have iron man tires all season, should I change them? They are new,.

Well, what you know. I didn't know that you can drive it like a little Jeep and it's a 2002...still kicking and clicking!

Almost bought one of these - but bought a Jeep XJ instead. Bad call.
Thousands spent since on one repair after another 😭
XJ's are great vehicles, but they need way too much TLC for me personally to handle.
For a rig to learn to wrench on, build & for serious off roading Cherokee's are Ace. But for practical everyday hassle free and economical motoring it's hard to beat a Honda.

Put some proper wide mud tires, (with studs) on it, and it'll climb anything.
