I've played hundreds of hours of Civ 5 but only a couple in 6, is there any negative to building more cities in 6 other than wasting turns and some growth in actually making the settlers? In 5 you get more unhappiness the more cities you have, is there something similar in 6?
@@michaelstewart9308 No, the more cities you have the more powerful you are. The difference is loyalty, if you put a city too far of another and have nearby cities from other empire the city can declare independence of you and in some cases join the other empire, that's the problem if you expand yourself with no control. The happiness is different to every city, not general for all cities.
I’ve only played once 1,5 years ago and I did 36 hours straight. I was seeing tiles in my floor, walls and when closing my eyes for hours afterwards lol

I just got this game on sale from steam and I played from 11 until 3AM. Around 350 turns later my city people started turning on me because I was broke and couldnt build housing 😂

Just picked this up for Xbox for £5 and these tips are far better than the in game tutorial. The in game tutorial might tell you HOW to do something but does not explain WHY you would want to do certain actions. The game didn't even explain the game loop / premise properly. This video helped me make sense of a lot of things I was confused about. Thanks for creating it :)
This is an excellent starter tutorial. I've been playing for some time now (Civ lll my favourite until Vl), but it's really good to have a tutorial that's not an hour long, with so much info, it's impossible to keep up. Yours is both concise and clear, and very relevant to those just starting out on their journey. Thank you.

Try the complete edition of 4. I can’t see how it gets any better after that. It got so complex that they had to start dumbing it down for the later versions. 4 is widely regarded as the peak of the franchise.

i bought civ 6 on sale a couple days ago and it’s very different from the games i’m used to playing. your videos have been super helpful, and i have a much better understanding of the game than i did after playing the in-game tutorial :)

Just recently got this via the Anthology, learned really quickly that barbarians should be destroyed and that playing "tall" works a bit differently this time. It is *still* possible to have few big cities, it's just that the minimum for few is a lot bigger now cause otherwise you will miss on strategic resources and room to build districts in the late game.
yes barbarians are everyone's most hated part of the game ahaha. You can definitely still build tall and they even added the Maya as a tall Civ, but I definitely think you want at least 6 cities or so
@@MohProbs The Maya are ineed my favorite civ because of that and because I just think their culture and history, both ancient and recent are fascinating and deserving of more praise and recognition than they currently get. Oh and most importantly, because of their *glorious* Industrial and Atomic era themes.

Just bought Civ VI. Last game was Civ II years ago and somehow ended up with all my town rebelling and falling into ruin. Everything was going so well for so long and then everything fell to pieces. I then proceeded to not play the game for 20 years. Let’s see if it goes better this decade!!
We used to call Civ a god game. But thanks for explaining 4X. I just started Civ 6 this week. CIv 1 on PC was great. Back in Civ 1 it was a good idea just to have a 4 wide city. Sounds like they are going back to it. Thanks for 6 wide size info. I see spamming settlers is still a working tactic.

Just got the game a few weeks ago. A learning curve but can't get enough out of it. Still playing my first real campaign as the Russian empire. I ended up losing the race but was still inclined to keep playing past 500 turns. Ended up eliminating Philip ll in a epic war that took over 50 turns. Nuked Barcelona for the victory. Currently pesting Japan with endless missionaries and outrageous demands. Meanwhile Norway just lined up all it's naval fleet on my borders. This game has been great so far.
Played Civ 5 on PC years ago, decided to pick up Civ 6 on Switch during the dark days of the pandemic, and it’s such a pain in the ass compared to PC but I can’t stop myself from playing it.
I have NEVER played any strategy game,mostly a Dark Souls,long adventure type player and this game seems so intriguing but overwhelming lol. I want to give it a shot but maybe as a 43 year old gamer,it maybe hard to teach this old dog new tricks lol. I'm about to buy it on the PS store...and no doubt I will be lost,but ya only live once. I search games like this all the time I just thought their real-time strategy but they're actually not like that at all the 4X makes way more sense

i have a different idea on the yelds, you can disable to show yyelds but u can make the game show you when u put the mouse over a tile its on the game options, it makes the visual of the game more beautiful without that many icons ruining the visuals, its called "mouse over menu help delay" on settings u set it to 0, and u always see when put mouse over. and its good to enable all other map options too as it show u the name of things.
yeah i feel you on the yields ruining the visuals. I just think it's easier for new players to play with the icons on at all times. and yes - having map names and stuff can be useful as well
Usually my main city I settle then let build 3 tiles in one direction before setting the city definitely 3 tiles away from the 3 tiles straight out for the main city
I just finished my first play through, mostly because I like the beginning of the game the most and I start to lack on where to put districts and the like.
It'll take time! I think just take some time to learn the adjacencies (i have a link to a cheat sheet in another vid) and you'll begin recognizing it easily
I tried defensive play for several games then one day while bored, I picked Alexander the Great and killed 4 nearby rivals within the first couple of eras. It was much more fun. :P
Yesterday after losing a berserker fight a thousand times in GoW Ragnarok I decided to calm myself down with my first ever civ game. Before I knew it it was 4 in the morning and I still don't get it.
@2:40 Last night was literally my 1st game ever (after restarting 3 times because i started to understand some stuff). I just kept saying 1 more thrn until my wife screamed at me that it was 3am and i woke up at 6 today XD Cant wait to take more turns later
I have a challenge idea where you would start as the civ that is in the middle of the ocean has to cross a continent before settling to me that gives you a layout of the whole area plus he comes with extra units so that helps with any surrounding barbarians
i had this game for a year havent played it since aoe2 came t gamepass my friends became obsessed with strategy games then bought civ 6 i have slept like 4 hrs a day for the last week damn this game is good and im glad to see we figured out most of those beginner tips on our own throughout the week / 3 games xD
Thanks for the video! Just got the game today and I've only ever played civ rev so it's definitely a leap haha. How important are early amenities? It feels like as soon as I settle a second city they are unhappy with plenty of turns before ill be able to build anything for them.
just my opinion, but I feel like amenities aren't THAT important. I think as long as you aren't going massively negative (like beyond -3) I think you should be fine? either way, still good to make sure you grab them when you can

Hey man, thanks for this video. I have had civ for more than a year, and I'd play it very early game, and give up because I just had a lack of focus and idea. This video definitely have a good general idea of how to play it. Just one question: What is the benefit of districts and how do I set them up?
Thanks for checking it out! Districts help give you boosts to certain resources which aren't as easy to generate from the land. Once you determine how you want to win - you will likely want to make the appropriate districts for your victory type / civ. So if you want a science victory make more campuses, if you want a religious victory make more holy sites, etc

So just got this on sell on switch, only played the DS age of empires games before so really looking forward to this once it downloads. Seems completely overwhelming at first but im hopeing I get the hang of it quick
start small and on lower difficulties and move up slowly. replaying the early game can be super helpful too and don't be afraid to save scum if you need. best of luck!
That meme is accurate to say the least. Never tried this game because I prefer RTS. Plus I’m trying to play through the tutorial to understand everything, but it doesn’t save the progress (on Switch) so I have to start over if I exit the game. Still, I’m stuck on it completely. Exactly as the meme: “Just one more thing here and..... ok just one more thing there and... ok...”
yeah the tutorial in the game isn't the best. I'd honestly try a real game (maybe at a lower difficulty - prince and under?) and just learn by playing. there's so many things to learn about so really the best way to figure things out is to keep playing. to your point though, that's the game - just going turn by turn and slowly building and building
don't think about it too much! i'd suggest just trying stuff out on lower difficulties and figuring out the game slowly. definitely a game u learn by playing

walls need to be unlocked in the tech tree. ancient walls come at masonry with others coming later. you then need to produce the walls using the city's production
Guys, there's a Steam Workshop mod for a display that keeps track of and, well, displays... all your promises, both promises that you have made and promises you have refused. As a total noob I've found his can be super helpful. I'd link you to it but TH-cam appears to be deleting any comment with a link in it. The mod is called "What Did I Promise?"

don't worry it's a pretty common mistake. play as greedy as you can manage!
Usually within 50 turns you want 2-3 cities. I put all my starter cities with access to ocean tiles because I love me some naval warfare. Lol

Yes 10/ 15-minute video are the right time length , they could make them in a series, part 1.2.3 etc. if need be. Any longer than that is too long.

just one more turn... I believe you're actually able to cloud save between Switch and PC so you can play the game no matter where you are!
I have NEVER played any strategy game,mostly a Dark Souls,long adventure type player and this game seems so intriguing but overwhelming lol. I want to give it a shot but maybe as a 43 year old gamer,it maybe hard to teach this old dog new tricks lol. I'm about to buy it on the PS store...and no doubt I will be lost,but ya only live once. Wow love the way you explained The 4x. I have never had referred to like that and I have been playing his games since before World of Warcraft was Warcraft. I search games like this all the time I just thought their real-time strategy but they're actually not like that at all the 4X makes way more sense

i have a different idea on the yelds, you can disable to show yyelds but u can make the game show you when u put the mouse over a tile its on the game options, it makes the visual of the game more beautiful without that many icons ruining the visuals, its called "mouse over menu help delay" on settings u set it to 0, and u always see when put mouse over.
and its good to enable all other map options too as it show u the name of things.
yeah i feel you on the yields ruining the visuals. I just think it's easier for new players to play with the icons on at all times.
and yes - having map names and stuff can be useful as well

Usually my main city I settle then let build 3 tiles in one direction before setting the city definitely 3 tiles away from the 3 tiles straight out for the main city
not a bad idea - definitely need to be flexible depending on how things play out though

I just finished my first play through, mostly because I like the beginning of the game the most and I start to lack on where to put districts and the like.
It'll take time! I think just take some time to learn the adjacencies (i have a link to a cheat sheet in another vid) and you'll begin recognizing it easily
My suggestion for new players is to play with Germany. Their production bonuses really make them a jack of all trades for any play style and victory
germany is a good pick. i think rome and japan are solid picks too

I tried defensive play for several games then one day while bored, I picked Alexander the Great and killed 4 nearby rivals within the first couple of eras. It was much more fun. :P

My number 1 tip for anyone playing civ 6 is set a timer for yourself. Otherwise that one more turn will turn into 12 hours later.

I have a challenge idea where you would start as the civ that is in the middle of the ocean has to cross a continent before settling to me that gives you a layout of the whole area plus he comes with extra units so that helps with any surrounding barbarians

i had this game for a year havent played it since aoe2 came t gamepass my friends became obsessed with strategy games then bought civ 6 i have slept like 4 hrs a day for the last week damn this game is good and im glad to see we figured out most of those beginner tips on our own throughout the week / 3 games xD
multiplayer civ is a whole nother animal!

Thanks for the video! Just got the game today and I've only ever played civ rev so it's definitely a leap haha. How important are early amenities? It feels like as soon as I settle a second city they are unhappy with plenty of turns before ill be able to build anything for them.
just my opinion, but I feel like amenities aren't THAT important. I think as long as you aren't going massively negative (like beyond -3) I think you should be fine? either way, still good to make sure you grab them when you can
its a shame that your "history behind the civ" videos got so few views compared to your game guides, because they're fascinating!

Hey man, thanks for this video. I have had civ for more than a year, and I'd play it very early game, and give up because I just had a lack of focus and idea. This video definitely have a good general idea of how to play it. Just one question: What is the benefit of districts and how do I set them up?

Districts help give you boosts to certain resources which aren't as easy to generate from the land. Once you determine how you want to win - you will likely want to make the appropriate districts for your victory type / civ. So if you want a science victory make more campuses, if you want a religious victory make more holy sites, etc

So just got this on sell on switch, only played the DS age of empires games before so really looking forward to this once it downloads. Seems completely overwhelming at first but im hopeing I get the hang of it quick
start small and on lower difficulties and move up slowly. replaying the early game can be super helpful too and don't be afraid to save scum if you need. best of luck!
That meme is accurate to say the least. Never tried this game because I prefer RTS. Plus I’m trying to play through the tutorial to understand everything, but it doesn’t save the progress (on Switch) so I have to start over if I exit the game.
Still, I’m stuck on it completely. Exactly as the meme: “Just one more thing here and..... ok just one more thing there and... ok...”
yeah the tutorial in the game isn't the best. I'd honestly try a real game (maybe at a lower difficulty - prince and under?) and just learn by playing. there's so many things to learn about so really the best way to figure things out is to keep playing.
to your point though, that's the game - just going turn by turn and slowly building and building

I used to play civ 2 religiously back in the day. I bought this one last night and my head hurts! Omg it's sooooo complicated. I feel so over my head!
don't think about it too much! i'd suggest just trying stuff out on lower difficulties and figuring out the game slowly. definitely a game u learn by playing

walls need to be unlocked in the tech tree. ancient walls come at masonry with others coming later. you then need to produce the walls using the city's production
Guys, there's a Steam Workshop mod for a display that keeps track of and, well, displays... all your promises, both promises that you have made and promises you have refused. As a total noob I've found his can be super helpful. I'd link you to it but TH-cam appears to be deleting any comment with a link in it.
