Hey Natalia, so after I saw this video I took your advice and joined the EFA to start the process of becoming a freelance editor. I’ve taken the free webinars as well as paid courses through them and ACES. I only recently started offering free edits in exchange for an honest review! I just wanted to THANK YOU for helping me kick off my editing business on a strong note!!!

@@alinabeck5003 hi! One of the first classes I took was “copyediting fiction” the teacher is Lourdes Venard. I think it was a good one to begin with.

I used to freelance edit right after getting my English degree years ago and you're absolutely right. You need to have a passion for it. It turns out I rather dislike editing for other people... a lot. Haha. Live and learn, right? Nothing against any of the clients I had... it just wasn't something that I enjoyed and I never would have known that if I hadn't done it.
I also hate editing my own work too. LOL.

Thank you for posting this video! I've wanted to look into freelance editing and writing and had no idea how to get started, but now I think I have an idea and avenues to follow. I'd like to turn it into a full-time job, but a little something on the side while I continue with my regular day job will work just fine for now. I think this is the boost I need!

It’s helped to clear up a lot of questions I had about the actual business and let me know what to focus on. Thanks so much for posting, love your content :)

Why do people who make instructional videos repeat themselves so much. I'm half way through the video and the only thing I've learned is that I should take classes in editing, which you have said several times. I am waiting for the rest of the content.

That would be fun to become an editor. I do not, however, know what university I should register for or what the price would be. I am a teenager from Ukraine, who longs for becoming a freelance editor within next ten or so years, since my meticulousness to minute details is impressive. I do not know my current English level, but I believe a few years of intensive work in an American university might greatly contribute to that. I would perhaps like to be either a line editor or a copy one. I myself, write stories, whose level (I believe) is not so good. Progress needs time and practice though.
I would really like it if you read this comment and give me feedback on my punctuation in it. From my perspective, this area is paramount when it comes to being a copy editor.
Thank you so much for recording videos!
    Best regards from an Ukrainian!
    Keep writing despite the circumstances!

Even though I'm not an editor, this was really interesting to me. Authors and editors are so intertwined, that its really cool to hear an experienced editors take on editing. Not to mention useful for authors who are trying to figure out who to hire. thanks for sharing!

I completely agree about having experience before getting started. As someone with lots of different experiences over the last 20+ years, but without a degree (well, I did take the equivalent of an Associate's in Mass Comm), I am back in the swing of freelance editing after taking some time off to focus on raising my kid. I was able to do some free editing for a local writer/publisher friend on a few projects, and now have had some great experiences as of the last three years or so. I am now in the middle of joining the editing organizations as I write this. I have also had good luck with having amazing clients, as well!

at 7:20, I think the question was more geared towards this: only after taking a client on do you discover that they are difficult to work with, by which time it's too late to back out. You must be a good judge of character to never take on someone that you later find to be difficult.

Thanks for all the great info! While I’m already taking a class on proofreading and looking into copy editing classes on EFA, I was gonna ask you the best way to get started once I was ready and this answered a lot of my questions. Most people tell me not to offer my services for free, so I’m glad to see that you got your start that way. I was sure that it’d be hard to find people willing to pay when I have no testimonials or portfolio. You mentioned offering five freebies. Was that a good number for you or, if you could go back, would you do less/more?

Hello Natalia! I’ve just stumbled across your channel and I’m absolutely grateful for all your knowledge. I have a question about rates, if you don’t mind answering it. You said we should charge lower to our first clients, but let’s say your first ever client loves your editing skills and decides to keep sending you their work. After some time, that client won’t probably accept a higher rate because you’ve been providing that service for much lower all this time. I just don’t see how this strategy could be sustainable in the long-run! Do clients usually have an issue with you charging them more money after a few years? Thank you!
