I started watching James' videos as a way to help my friend understand his religion and its origins, and I've continued watching because I've become absolutely enamored by the dedication and eloquence he has in regard to his work. I've learned so much from him in the past few weeks, and absolutely love this series. I highly recommend exploring his teachings whether you're religious or not. It's all truly enlightening.
Wow, I just discovered your channel. What a gift!!!! You're amazing! I am so grateful you are putting this out for all the rest of us to learn. Thank you thank you thank you!
I find cemeteries and headstones and inscriptions rather captivating too at times. They can be sad though. I lived in Savannah for three years close to the Bonaventure Cemetery where the Bird Girl used to reside. The torture described in the Book of the Maccabees was really atrocious. It was another interesting lecture, Dr. Tabor.
Hi to any religious persons watching-please understand that watching this video doesn’t make you irreligious. I know for some even watching a video like this may be spiritually difficult, but you should at least see that some of the best critical scholarship has been done by the most devout and religious Christians. Your religious commitments should not prevent you from having secular knowledge about religion, if only as an additional perspective in addition to a religious one.
I really don't understand why it takes someone like yourself to tell people that. All that tells me is the amount of coercion that goes on within a religous control system. People are free thinkers not robots.
Much gratitude! I am innerstanding your teaching and learning much more from you💯 You are easy to listen to. I been watching/listening to your channel for a couple months. This is an amazing time to be here in the flesh. I can't wait for more of your videos. I wish for other Souls to Awaken ❣️
I wish Martha and Mary had asked Lazarus about his experience. I would have liked to have read an account of what he said it was like where he was while dead.
I have been fascinated by John the Baptist for 45 years. Back then it occurred to me that before he was John the "Baptist", he was John the "bug eating, camel skin wearing, homeless guy that lived out in the desert".😂 That was when I realized, if I was going to be a believer, I was going to need some CONTEXT. Can you imagine someone saying to you "just let the bug eating, camel skin wearing, homeless guy hold your Head underwater for a second and it will wash away your sins"?😂 Thank you Doctor Taber, for helping me with the context.
Well if you really were seeking for context of John the Baptist. You would realize that he was from a line of Priests, since his father Zechariah served in the Temple . That’s the reason he was chosen, living in the wilderness didn’t mean he was homeless. Some scholars believe that he was part of the essenes which lived separate from the rest of the people in Qumran where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. The Qumran community was already expecting a messianic figure to arrive even before Jesus was born.
@@zedek6658 yeah, I know. That's why I was thanking the good doctor for helping me with "context". How about next time you actually read the comment before being critical of the person who made it.
@@zedek6658 yeah, I've read it, I know. But why does that matter? How does that apply to the story of Christ? How did he go from being the son of a priest to being a homeless guy wearing camel skin and eating bugs? You really should Google the meaning of "CONTEXT".
@@billcook7285 Dr Tabor gives his opinions on many things in the New Testament, it doesn’t mean everything he says is facts. Not all scholars agree with him and it’s not the consensus.
Thank you. I am glad you are doing this in "bite-size" segments. Is there a timeline somewhere for this evolution? I did a quick internet search and nothing jumped out.
Does anyone know of a scholars translation of all the Proper Nouns (names) in the Bible? I have done it, and I think they are adjectives, not actual people or lands, etc. Thanks @jamestabor
All tribal peoples I have read about have a much more positive view of the afterlife. They view it as a "happy hunting ground," where they will reunite with their ancestors and live an idealized version of this life. Hunting will always be successfull; crops will always be bountifull; disease will be absent, etc. Any soldier who had served in Gaul would have been familiar with this, as it was the view of the Celts. Julius Caesar, in his journal, stated that the Celts were the most feared warriors because they didn't fear death. and, of course, the Galatians in the East were also Celts. I wonder how many of the non-educated people in the ancient world held the pessimistic view of the philosophers.
Genesis 25: 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people. Abraham wasn't buried with his ancestors. His spirit was gathered to his ancestors spirits.
Your take on job "reedemer" in the last video was wrong. it never said "oh, that my redeemer lives" like you mentioned. all the oh.. statements are made but is then negated by the statement"but as for me I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES" and the talk about the redeemer has nothing to do with being vindicated as you said...he says he will see the redeemer with his own eyes. when you were breaking it down it was so obvious you were just trying to put the passage aside because the ppassage debunks your whole series in one area. as a historian you can say its a minority view but don't eisegete the text.
35:48 minutes in, he says he thinks Jesus is agreeing with the apostle Paul......the apostle Paul transformation didn't happen until AFTER the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ....🤦♂️
Paul's writings were not a precursor to the timeline of Jesus Christ's ministry. He (james here) says Jesus agreed with Paul when asked the question of who will be married to the widow in Heaven when they are all dead. How can Jesus agree with Paul when answering that question? Paul was still Saul until acts 13:13 and had never ran into Jesus yet either until acts 9:1-9
@@damieno3470 How can that happen? By not reading the texts literally or accepting them uncritically at their word. Paul is our *EARLIEST* text. Everything else is later - not in the “timeline” inside the texts, but in the *actual* timeline of reality -and therefore informed by Paul.
At 33:10 he said, they knew he had been "exalted to heaven". The reason they knew was because of him fulfilling Genesis 49:8-10 and escaping the prey as Judah' son aka a lions whelp who "ART GONE UP". It is he; his brethren shall praise and bow down to and to him shall the gathering of the people. Don't let any man tell you the "resurrection" is not in Torah or found in the Tanach. It seems afterlife beliefs have evolved from the human mind. That being said it would seem we can definitely say we just dont know. The only things we might possibly say for sure is the unexplained paranormal. Just read Quora. This man when he was little was holding on after falling out a window. Just when he was losing his grip a man pulled him back in. There was no one home as his mom left for 10 mnts and locked the door and neighbors couldnt get in to help. Showing him a pic album he pointed to a man that was his gr.grandfather.❤ So there you are. We ought to be with it to all this by now but people STILL dont accept it. To say these are just demons or angels? The christian testament claims the dead cannot cross over, that God created a chasm. I think thats another human fabrication. That doesnt mean we should go out of our way to connect. It just means a lot of what we've been taught is bogus.
How I wish you would address Isaiah 33 verses 14 15 16..... As I read it it explains 2 main theme 1. God is a Holy Fire and the new body of those whom dwell with Him are such as they are not affected by the consuming fire..2. no eternal hell as they are resurrection of the unjust and may not dwell or better said like flies to the flame are attracted but burnt up most likely very quick.or I have it all wrong?..!
Isaiah 33:14-16 will be fulfilled on Tisha B' Av wherein the plan God has sworn by Himself is to take "vengeance" on that day and destroy 'Mystery Babylon'. Jeremiah 51:11-14. Those who fulfill Isaiah 33:15 will "on that cloudy and dark day" be sought out, gathered from the 4 corners of earth and brought into the wilderness mountains of the land and be fed and lie down in safety. Dear Tabor, you gotta simplify the stories. About the epitapf, you could have just said ‘one of them read ‘I will be gone” omitting all the details.
