Wildcard ~ Yeah, Armando Lannucci is a genuine guy with genuine talent. However, All that Fake laughter Coming from James O’Brien is very annoying. His insincerity is outstanding . . . What a Creep !
Armando is a genius. Everything he does is gold. If you have not listened to it, try to find the audio for Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive - 4 series from Radio 4 starting in 2005. It has some great fantastic satire and Armando doing his slightly surreal shtick. Still funny and clever now.
he is not a genius he is a bald elderly cynical athiest there is nothing genius about that the world is full of them thats the problem. as a young man he was a swat who got good a levels and managed to swing it into oxford or cambridge or where ever he went and the world swoons whenever we are told they went to one of those universities and then people like Ianuucci start to beleive their own hype and think yes they are actually geniuses and better then everyone else. They are not though they are caught up in the vanity of their own minds and conceit.
lina It's nothing to do with his degree or the university he attended. It's about his writing and his wit, which are inventive, fresh, clever, irreverent and most of all, extremely funny. IMHO.
@@michaelrch Before I came to believe in the God of the bible and the judgement to come of all men i too thought he was incredibly funny now i just think his and obriens anti Christ position is just scary
Iannucci is quite possibly one of the greatest dialogue writers in history. The way he mixes natural speaking with spot-on wit is just profound. Typically you’ll just have either/or in a show or film, but his characters always manage to sound stupid whilst being incredibly clever.
Kris Sweeting ~ Yeah, Armando Lannucci is a Genuine Guy with Genuine Talent. However, All that Fake Laughter Coming from James O’Brien is very annoying. His insincerity is outstanding. What a Creepy character . . . . .
Capaldi and Iannucci are both from The Gorbals in Glasgow. As am I. And my wife is Italian. After being married for three years I understand the racism against those pizza guzzlers. I have more appreciation for being Scotch.
I was lucky in a way that this just started playing automatically after Armando's most recent appearance on RHLSTP RHLSTP. It's quite good. Definitely Armando's name is a kind of seal of quality for me, at least. I find myself sharing trailers etc. in an almost Pavlovian way.
The bit about the Stalin joke book at the end reminded me of a thing I heard on the radio years ago set in Soviet Poland/Secret Police. I can't remember the title at all, but I do remember it made me laugh out loud. I think it was on the BBC. Any ideas?
On the subject of comedy under a repressive regime, they had some good jokes in the Soviet Union (I don't know about the situation under Putin). One that stuck in my mind: Men in the Gulag are sharing how they got there. One says "I was often late for work and they accused me of sabotage", the next says "I was often early and they said I was a spy", then the third man says "I always got to work right on time, and they said I must have bought my watch in the West."
What could a 'T' mean, it's a letter? It only takes on meaning when it is combined with other letters to form a word. Or it could be four white squares on a red background.
Tonight was a toss-up between watching a programme called THE ZOO, with two monitor lizards eating a goat or watching this interview.... Jeez, mainstream TV has become boring......fantastic interview James...great guest.
This interview series is fucking cracking, the level of discussion and debate is through the roof; respectful, informed, engaging. Now I’m just waiting for a guest who happens not to be a straight white man…
Brilliant. Armando is akin to Alexis Corner in bringing talent together. Also, he's a bright spark & thinks brexit is a terrible mistake... I rest my case
Fair point, but I daresay BR's marketing budget was about a hundred times bigger than DoS's. And maybe this was recorded before BR was actually released, and revealed to be a less commercial prospect than the studio had hoped.
I, finally have succumbed and bitten the bullet as after a lifetime of revulsion I have, with the greatest of reluctance, " liked" a video featuring J. O'Brien. Obviously, this is entirely due to Sir Armando but still...
He is a conventional politician, but in the US system he is by and large considered 'radical', and now that the British press wants to be American so much they tow the line, even though we have centrist politicians that could be considered as 'radical' as Bernie here in the UK.
Remember when Armando employed a beast in thick of it? Then defended his right to start acting again and called him a great friend. Pepperidge farms remembers.
For all his talk of the so-called Right being worthy of criticism, and given that he is always talking about people being partisan over being practical (following the party, and not the policy), he is clearly of the Left and on the Left - when it comes to US politics. Not only here, but in his political panel podcasts etc. While he espouses co-operation and non-partisan thinking, he derides the Right. It would be more honest were he simply to admit to being a Leftist before being a supposedly non-partisan actor. By way of example, and not that I would have voted for either the egotistical idiot or the old man pretending to be president, he labels Trump as authoritarian and speaks nothing of the Left's being the same. Shame.
You're calling Armando Ianucci a closet "Leftist" as if he cloaks his partisan views on US politics, (though why he should care enough about US politics to do that when he is British - I don't actually know) when he is talking about his satirical creation which mocks Stalin? I don't think you know as much about this man, the co-creater of the character "Mr Tony Blair", as you think you do. I think you're assuming quite a hell of a lot. You may benefit from revising any assumptions you may have that all clever quasi political humorists, even Scottish ones! are all part of some shaddowy anti Republican kabal on the payroll of some nefarious "Leftist" media cult. It's a tiny bit ridiculous. I hope you'll forgive me for pointing out.
I have unrestricted love for all of Armando's works.
