Most authors never have a bestseller. Even fewer come to define an entire decade. Trainspotting, both the book and the film that followed it, was a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s, catapulting writer Irvine Welsh into literary infamy.
In this unflinching interview with James O’Brien, Irvine talks candidly about the drug-fuelled hedonism of the ‘80s and ‘90s that he both participated in and distilled into stories, how he pulled himself out of a vicious heroin addiction, the whirlwind of success that followed Trainspotting, and his unbridled passion for tennis and Andy Murray.

Met Irvine on a plane coming home from Florida , a proper surreal moment had to pinch myself as l was sitting in economy class and his wife and mother in law were in 1st class he said to me “ how can l sit in there and call myself working class ! “ l thought amazing a real working class hero at last ?

Irvine Welsh's account of the reasons for and nature of addiction/s should be taught in schools... So refreshing also to listen to a person so matter-of-fact about his own considerable talent. Once again, James O'Brien proves himself a most skillful interviewer, his subject well researched, his own interest obvious and the ability to let his subject respond at length to his prompting without interruption. 10/10 to both subject and interviewer. xx SF

Very important writer-I saw him at Edinburgh book festival in 1994 reading from his new novel the Acid House. Lot's of characters there.

Could have watched and listened to this all day. A great man whose writing, in all forms, I have loved ever since i discovered it, with Trainspotting. Excellent interview James.

At 33:45 he makes a VERY profound statement concerning ecstacy...within 10 minutes of taking a tablet, he felt like he invented Acid House...that stuff is simply amazing...amazing how you feel that night, amazing how terrible you feel the following 3.5 days!!!

Brilliant interview. O'Brien has a knack of getting the best out of interesting people. For this reason Stewart Lee would be good on this.

Who was Irvine Welsh watching when he wrote the book, The bedroom scene with Renton and the picture of the footballer on the wall reminds me of someone else, Any thoughts on that Judith ? You had an old photo on your wall after you split up with Mr Dagliss/Daglish. Some things are stranger than fiction, When they are pre-planned.

Yet again a great interview. Do you publish a list of future interviewees? Would love to see Will Self and historians like Mary Beard or Niall Ferguson.

Talking Shite, Muirhouse/pennywell was knocked down because of a multimillion pound regeneration not because of algerian design building that happened in the Gorbals.
