🤣 I have every single box since four years ago from all electronics gear pc stuff. I nearly died of laughter after reading this. You sir have made my morning thank you. Cheers.
A lot of weird negative fanboy comments on here. You guys have to realize that having synths that sound drastically different from each other is a huge positive right? I think people get up in arms only because they want to justify their purchase...but putting down other synths doesn’t make your synth better nor does it remotely justify your purchase more than someone else’s. Owning both would be a smart move since they have a very different sound and set of abilities. Comparison vids are only valid when comparing clones to originals or something like that. That’s why this is called a “friendly comparison” compare doesn’t inherently mean which one is better, comparing and contrasting is super important when buying synths and building a studio but really anyone watching this should just know this it’s just simple critical thinking skills
Well stated. But fanboys will be fanboys, and sometimes it's good to hear the good vs. the bad contrasts as well as all the positive stuff. I almost bought the Prologue 16 when it was $1999 until I learned that it didn't have aftertouch or a sequencer. Now it's priced at $1499 but I still wouldn't buy it. If Korg eventually adds those missing features then I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.
They are both great. If you need the Prologue for your music buy it, if you need the Prophet’s sound for your music buy it. If you need them both buy them both. Fan boy hate is so old already in 2018. Grow up people. There’s something for everyone in the market.
I really pondered this before finally buying the Prologue. I love the Prophet and had a original 5 for many years, but after extended playing of both, the fat rich timbre of the Korg sold me on it. It's a wonderful synth, no regrets.
A little amusing, since the thin boring sound and lack of pretty much any timbre at all, as well as missing a huge amount of features even much older boards had natively - is one of the reasons it has been a complete failure for Korg and is being redesigned lol. Still. Each to his/her own.
It's a fair enough question. To start with, my issue with Korg is mainly that they come up with ridiculous excuses to remove features that for other companies are usually native. It might be Aftertouch. It might be the claim that we all want '37 keys' as with the new wavestate, it might just be filters and lfo. Being told that a future product 'might' be made 'later' depending on feedback, for twice the price - just to include some basic features... well I find that astounding honestly. I found the Prologue sound to be fairly un-analogue at the time, thats not to say it lacked appeal in some ways (simplicity of approach) but it was a close call for many with the Rev2 (Don't personally care for DSI). I held back, in the hope that Korg would fix the mess of prologue but instead they have kept pretty quiet and it is less promoted than Kronos 2 (nearly a decade old). So I find that quite troubling too. Novation would be the choice now I think. With aftertouch and a wider feature set than the Korg - but with a better sound as well.
@@ErraticFaith Did you demo the 8 or 16 voice? The 16 sounds much richer. Also, the point about the Novation is well taken, it's very nice. One feature of a knobby synth like the Prologue is it's use with Omnisphere which I use frequently. The integration is excellent thanks to Spectrasonics. I use it in that configuration most of the time.
First time I heard a Prologue I thought wow that sounds amazing, but then I realized that they had left out a bunch of features. Now Im waiting for the Prologue XD.
FlyingLunatic Wouldn’t be called XD. it’s already an XD because the Minilogue XD is short for Minilogue X Digital because of the added digital oscillator that is already on the prologue.
I got a prologue 8 a few years ago and I can't complain. Something about mixing extremely digital sounding sounds and vintage analog sounds is pretty neat to me. But there's really something special with all the prophet/rev 2 oscillators that just sound so rich I just don't know why they sound so different from everything else out there.
Prophet 6 all the way, seriously. It's not even close! Prologue doesn't even sound as good as many cheap DCO synths (or even VAs!) while Prophet 6 is hands down THE best modern analog poly we have, better than OB-6 too.
Great review / comparison! I have a question about the Prologue; how much / how often do the oscillators go out of tune? Is that only in a cold / hot room? or always?
it is rare for me... usually only when it's in the warm up stage in the first 10-15 min. I had one voice go completely screwy on me last night after a few hours but a re-tune solved that problem fast. it's a non issue for me
I have a P6 and an OB6 I had a Prologue 16 for about a week and it did not sound as good. But the big problem was the Oscillators being out of tune and back in tune as you go up and down the keyboard. using the tune function did not help at all.
Mine only seemed to have that problem when I first started using it. I usually let it warm up for a good 10 minutes before I really get into playing it though. My Prophet6 had some tuning issues as well but that was in a much less controlled environment
Great video! Thanks so much for this. I learned how synths work from the software called Reason. But despite the seemingly limitless capabilities of the software, I crave turning knobs and having happy accidents. I am going to take the Korg for test run.
Thx I have Prologue 16 and yes, so amazing instrument. I was always looking for P6 however I have P5 from Arturia and cannot justify the price for P6. Recently I tried Trigon (as the best of breeds) however I was really sad as there is no vibe, no character, nothing and even my DeepMind12 sounds better. But still P6 is one I must try after your super demo - thx for that.
I love my Prologue and my P6. Gotta say I prefer the tone of the Prologue. The Prologue sounds way more like a Roland synth than the P6 (to my ears its way closer to my Alpha Juno 1 sound).
Appreciate it! Sometimes I feel like I could plan these things out and edit them a little more professionally, but half the fun is just seeing what comes out when I hit record!
I have a minilogue xd, and keep looking at the prologue as a "move up". Play the xd for hours and hours at a time. I really hate that it doesn't have an onboard sequencer. I do love that Korg sound though.
such an underrated synth the prologue! It might be a big sell but once you get a dedicated sequencer for all your gear you'll never use a built-in one again!
The prologue will come out with new waves for the "user" section, so basically you'll have an infinite amount of waves at your disposal, especially cause they'll be wavetables!
I actually prefer the Korg in some sounds and the P6 in others. The P6 has something to its sound I just don't like sometimes. I had the same with a P12 I had on demo. It's good there is so much variation in synths/sounds; so we can all get what we like most.
I was a naughty boy and picked up a prologue 16 a few months ago. Underrated synth, especially for the money. "Tuning gate" is probably to thank for that, but it is fixed now. Good comparison with the P6! I think sound wise they are in the same league, but I do prefer the prologue's filter, it is miles ahead. You can get really wild! Also the digital engine and patch stacking makes things deeper in a different way than a mod matrix. Both cool synths. The prophet holds up to its name and cheers to korg for doing something original yet still classic feeling. (100% on the fingerprint problem with the korg, I embrace it but it really bugged me at first. Even a microfiber cloth takes some elbow grease to clean the thing up.)
I'd say the Prologue for me as well. It comes down to the combination of features, sound and price. Prologue sounds great, offers 16 voices instead of 6 and has a 5 octave keyboard for, well nowdays less than a thousand dollars which is crazy. 16 voice analogue for under a thousand dollars is really great value. If you buy new it's at $1700 now I think while the P6 trades at $3500 new. Kudos to Sequential they make great stuff but at these price point it is a bit hard to swallow. Both synths are fantastic and sound great but one of them is less than half the price and offers, well, more. And I think the P6 loses just on that alone.
Hey at 1:20 you mention that the oscillators on your old minilogue went out of tune. I have a Minilogue right now and it'll start in tune and within 5 minutes (or less) of being on a unison mode, I'll get nasty out of tune notes, that's not coming from the detune feature of the unison. Is that a defect with Korg synths, or is that supposed to happen with synthesizers? Thanks in advanced.
I loved the Prologue so much I was thinking about getting the Mini used since so many people are selling it. I hope this tuning issue isn't common. The Prologue has some self tuning before it fully turns on.
sometimes I had to tune my minilogue 2-3 times in the first 20 minutes to make sure it was in tune. it would drift out pretty bad over the higher octaves. After sufficient time though it was usually pretty steady. The Prologue appears to be stabler than the minilogue, but I kind of like the genuine analog tuning variance that you get that way
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am still a novice to the Prologue and there isn't a lot of literature from Korg on how to do everything with it's functions. At least it's not entirely clear anyhow. I usually learn by watching other people's videos. That's how I learned how to use the Sub37. Not so many videos on the Prologue yet so seeing this video has actually helped out with quite a bit on using the multi engine. Now I just need a demonstration of how to use the split function on the keyboard lol
As I've found the split functions are in the menus but its not too hard to find once you're familiar with the layout. I've had the mini and the monologues and their workflow is exactly the same so it was super familiar right out of the box. I'm really happy with how easy everything is to access (except for velocity settings which I have forgiven). I'm gonna try to do some more comparison vids like this going into the future.... I just have no rhyme or reason to it so I start talking and kinda let it get away from me. A script would probably help but I'm too lazy for that. I think the lack of polish in the video is part of it's charm
No aftertouch or velocity is perfect 👍 Never had em on my old synths like my Jupiter 8 or Juno, or the OBXa I had on lease. So hows the tuning on your Prologue? Also I get ya on the four octaves .. its the sole reason I didn't get the P6. You got a nice collection of modern synths there 👍
catching up on some comments that I let get away... the tuning on the prologue is good, once its warmed up. I usually have to retune it once after a little use and then it's great for the rest of the session. One day I will own a Jupiter-8, I have made that promise to myself
Rev2 has complexity that blows both of these two out of the water. If you like building patches or intricate moving pads and evolving sounds Then the REV2 is a super sweet synth. Ive got the P12 and thats my go-deep synth, so I feel less obliged to get the REV2
haha it’s like you read my mind making this video, it’s so good to see you’ve bonded with your prophet 6. i have been considering selling my polysix and replacing it with the prologue (but we all know i can’t sell another vintage synth) i had hopes the compressor thing would bring it to that vintage level of power. do one of these for ob-6 prophet 6!
It’s down to preference but I didn’t get on with my Rev2. I sold it. I haven’t really replaced it but I do have a Minilogue XD and absolutely love it. I love the ability to add more stuff with the digital oscillator. I get a bit bored of just analogue sounds. Everything sounding like stranger things or blade runner. I’m now faced with wanting more polyphony. So I’ll add an XD polychined module. Or I’ll get a prologue 8.
I just joined the world of synths, with my first one, the prologue 8. I am getting so into it, that im now considering upgrading to the 16. do you think it would be worth the extra money, do you think the 8 is close to as good for a new player, thanks :)
I did the upgrade. I had a 8 and went to a 16. When using the sub(2 layers) it sounds more killer as well as unison. The compressor is warm. Im not sure it its overly worth it for you, but i do like the extra keys, compressor and voices. I may end up selling mine in the near future though since i do not have a ton of room, and was thinking of an OB-6 or Summit. Not sure though. The Prologue sounds great! My go to synth, its will be hard to let it go if i ever end up doing so.
@@embodie_breaks7089 thanks, ya i really like it :) I am really starting to make a lot of layered timbre sounds, having 8 keys during that time would be nice, even though 4 is usually plenty. Good chance I will upgrade at some point though :)
is that a Mrs. or MS, 2000 above that prologue there? Have you considered clearing some space on your stand? If yes to the latter two Q, let me know how to spell sell on a price tag.
I feel the same way about my Prophet 6. Check out the new Moog GrandMother man. I think it will be a very nice addition to your rig. The spring reverb sold me in real quick lol.
I am super sold on the Grandmother. I am firmly on the side of the fence that it looks awesome and has some great features. I've got the Sub37 and there is a Voyager in my area that I really realllllly really want to justify but haven't been able to figure out what synths I would sell to make it work. The Grandmother is definitely on my list though!
I found a few things. The 1st 500 are being sold at GC for the MoogFest 2018. They were sold out in minutes lol. They will have another shipment in June as well as Sweetwater which is where I shop since 2015. But yea, the color scheme is a tad goofy but has that late 70's garage built synth junky vibe. I say jump the gun on the Voyager even if you do have a Sub37. I still wish I purchased a standard size Voyager. Instead I waited so long the only thing left was the XL. Funny store I made a backorder purchase of $5000 for the XL & a few weeks later I panicked & canceled the order. Less than 6 months later (shortly before December 2017) it dropped to $4000. This was a deal of a life time for me & I took it. So if you add up store price of Voyager and the 2 CV patchbay modules, it would be well over $4000. I'm very happy to have the builtin patchbay on the XL but it is the heaviest synth on the market. About the same weight as my retired Korg Triton 88.
It really is the "holly grail" of all mono synths man. If I had a lottery ticket, it would be well spent on the Emerson modular lol. You can get a few well cared for used XL's on ebay and reverb.com under $4000 or just wait for Sweetwater to drop the price again. I was stewing on standard voyager & XL model for the longest time. Just recently I was stewing on PRS custom 22 & McCarty 594. I finally made the leap for McCarty 594. I use to have a custom 22 & traded off. Latest videos have my ears stuck on McCarty for sure. Research research research, it could just make a man loose his mind.
UnderBridge Rock funny you mentioned 3 oct keybed. For me, I never wanted to step away from 3.5 oct keybed after realizing & owning the Model D, that extra half oct was & still is very useful. At this moment, I figure 2.5 oct is better than 2 like a sub smally I think lol. There’s just something about having that extra half oct down low, that is, if it’s not a full 5 oct. when I owned a mininova, I felt I needed more keys down low but no more than half oct. On my prophet 6, I actually feel I need 1 more octave up top. This seams to be in some cases. Since I first owned prophet 6, I just wanted to use it as my main analog polly synth. Can’t really do this with 4 oct but you can actually get by. I do complain a lot less now anyways lol. As far as 3 oct keybed go, I wish 44 key was more popular than 37. I know of only four 44 key (3.5 oct) synths out now, model d, voyager, pro 2 & mopho x4. All this being said, you may find yourself to give in if you want the synth bad enough, that’s if you’re still young. A lot of older cats just can’t break old habits.
LOL. DM12 is all an FX box with a very poor synth engine, that said I prefer its tone to the Prologue as I hate the Prologues cheap/coated/VA type sound. But it's not even fit to be in the same room as the Prophet 6 (DM12 nor Prologue) both will cheapen the experience, Prophet 6 is a king of modern synths and in actual music it'll show up a DM12 and esp Prologue pretty fast.
I`ve found the DM12 to be amazing for ambient, pad, FX, soundscapes, noisescapes due to the amazing mod matrix and FX engine. On the other hand if you strip out all FX, learn it`s functions and perhaps utilise more than one voice of polyphony you can do a suprisingly solid bass sound for example that you won`t find in it`s presets. As I`ve been finding out in recent times it really does pay to know as much about synthesis as possible to extract the most from any gear
i watch your vids once in a while on instagram. im also in BC. I like how you have the ms2000 and the prologue. love both. prophet 6 does sound very nice though with the filter sweeps. love that harshness. i ended up going with the prologue 6 but sometimes i think "damn that compressor could be banging" even tho i got other compressors. Nice collection ya got dude. killer stuff.
Great video, man, but you didn't mention shape nobs on the prologue VCOs, those i think give you much more variations then the prophet's continuously waves
Paliev Ivan totally agree- went into this one super unscripted so it’s a lot of stumbling around and forgetting about things. Good point- there’s lots of variation I didn’t touch base on
You could have placed the prophet 6 over the prologue on the stand and you would have avoided all that camera rotating... Anyway, thanks for the comparison!!!
PH Piano Cover I really like the keybed on the prologue. The keys are fast, they feel good. I like the Prophet6 better though. I’ve spent very very little time with the REV2 and it was more similar to the Prophet12 which has a little bit of a less springy almost piano feel
With some classical piano training, very soft keyboards always bother me. Would you say which one is firmer to the touch, or heavier, shall we say? Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
Noam Ben Shabat just the pedal as far as I know. I can do everything but insist it is a total non issue though unless you are going to crank the res to ungodly levels and really torture someone. I never ever notice it when I’m using the synth unless I want to tune the filter to something (and then I’m really thankful for it)
Noam Ben Shabat i actually made a video specifically about this a year or two ago, but while it’s an analog filter, it’s still digitally controlled- At least by the main controls and MIDI/NRPN. But when it’s being played by the VCA or LFO it is a 100% analog sound, there is no stepping whatsoever it’s a smooth sweep. The only time you’ll hear stepping ever is with the main cutoff knob and even then only in extreme resonance would you ever notice it.
@@MRTUNA nice, to be honest, i'm just about to purchase on of DSI synths (P6 VS OB6) And I'm can't really decide, I have seen so many videos, asked so many people and still.... can't decide. I need half versatile lead synth for Ambient/ Psybeint music... :/ Any opinion from your experience with both of them?
@@NBSStudioMusic the P6 is definitely the more bread and butter synth- there's a lot more range in the Prophet's sound..... but the OB6 is a big in your face character sound and the whispiness of the notch-filter would be killer for some psy-leads.
Just have been listening to more demos like this. Its helpfull because no shops near me will have one for me to get my hands on so in this case i have to rely on some youtube demos. I think it sounds pretty good from what I've heard, just the price point feels a bit high and want to see of the 3rd party developers deliver will deliver with the user-generated waves. That might push this thing to a level that makes the price tag worth it.
Yeah, just decide on your own. See if it is what you really want and buy it if needed, don't let idiots like quarky stop you from doing what you want. It angers me to see assholes like him in communities that aren't at all aggresive.
Exilion oh yeah no worries man! I get some of that in my comments from time to time. I tend to just ignore then usually. Just trolling for some reason, must not have anything better to do. They should be making some music instead of being dbags.
Wow - the prologue sounds really good! I'm really hoping to see you eventually get sheetrock in that room! The inner completionist in me wants to see that done, hah.
They are all good synths it'a a matter of preference and price. Personally I prefer warm sounds so I like the Prologue a little bit more and it's cheaper than the Prophet. But If I could I would buy all of them really lol.
Jesus i guess i wish i was lucky enough to have all these to make these comparisons.i am currently thinking the prophet 6 is the way i am going but it would be awesome to have the ob6 too
Rhizosphere thanks for your view & insight comparing the 2. I really enjoy creating my own patches these days vs my old korg tritons sample library. It definitely seams kingkorg & prologue truly have their own distinctive character. I make my purchases through Sweetwater & haven’t seen a kingkorg on sale for a long while. I may have to go used.
Darío Peris I used to own a deepmind... I was really excited to get it. But really (and this is just my personal experience) it did not live up to my expectations. I found the sound output to be really quiet and the oscillators were always really lean... I was always doubling them up with the unison modes (which were great) and even then I found it wasn’t enough. Patch changing was teeedious and there is a lot of menu driven parameters and main features hidden as secondary controls that always had me a little miffed. I loved the wifi functionality and the iPad app. That was really cool. I made some great music with it but i was happy to send it on its way to get some different gear. Can’t argue with the price though!
I kinda let this one get away from me :P Shoulda cleaned my finger nails and maybe broke it down into alternate takes and clips, but I went in with 0 script and just followed my heart. I was happy with the end result, it was a quick and dirty evening of shooting and editing. I so appreciate you taking the time to watch!
i can’t find a store that has them side by side with the prophet, better yet something like the jupiter or poly six to see how it compares with the best of the best. the prophet has more features than the old poly six, and being modern stays in tune better. but the POWER and grist of the original analogue synths of the early eighties just DOMINATES the prophet and sounds so much more life-like and ANALOGUE and genuine. the prophet almost feels like a virtual analogue in comparison... so i’m really reluctant to waste time on the prologue as, i suspect it uses similar tech? though that meter on the 16 voice seemed like it was designed to help give it that old-school oomph! one day i’ll get them all together!
hi, As it seems you own all the cool synth, could you buy a REV 2 if it's not already done ? Because I'd love to see a no friendly comparison between Prologue 16 and Rev 2 16. regards Ps : of course, or you can just give me your thoughts about it ! ;-)
I've got both (one stacked above the other) but if I had to pick one it would be the Prophet 6 by a landslide. Greatest electronic keyboard of any type I've ever owned or played.
Agreed. I was on my P6 today and it was everything. Although The OB6 might be my top top favorite just in the sense that it sounds unlike anything else I have. If I only had to have 1 synth and 1 synth only, it would be the P6 ....or maybe the P12
With all features missing on the Prologue it feels like a very rushed product. And if velocity is hidden, its like a smart phone where they like allmost forgot that you should be able to make calls with it... Dont get me wrong I love the sound of the prologue, but all the missing features would annoy me like hell in the long run. Especially the absence of a sequencer...
I definitey get it. Im spoiled enough with other synths that the 'missing' features dont really bug me... the sound is so sweet that it really makes up for it in my use. That being said, I have zero interest in crowding the synth with a sequencer because ive got a main sequencer im using otherwise. I never ever use the built in sequencers on my other synths (like the Prophet) because they are too limited and basically a novel value in my use.
Prophet 6 owner (and lover) here, got the Minilogue when it came out, the Prologue has the same tonality and I'm not a fan. The air, the rasp/buzz, it's not smooth and there's not enough of it, which makes the thing difficult to sit in a mix. The Prophet is utterly magical in that regard, I can always get sounds tucked beautifully into a mix with no eq, just set the filter right and bob's your uncle.
I'm really comforted by your comment. I feel the same about my minilogue, the sound is awesome and you can do wonderfull textures, but in a mix (live or studio) it feels like it's.. hollow ? Sounds heterogeneous... And with all the praises and the cult around it, I just thought "What's wrong with me ? Are my ears broken ?" hahaha But now I know I'm not alone, thank you
That is how I got my M3...a Prologue demo at Sweetwater with a couple hundred off, is the best I have found. It is hard for me to tell about the Prologue since it has been such a long time since Korg has created an analog synth...looks like even the DSI stuff is losing value after a few years now that the market has opened up. Plus the P12 desktop etc are easily under $2k. peace.
The korg sounds like trash though? don't buy a synth just cos it's cheap. Get a proper synth if you want analog get one that actually SOUNDS analog or you may just as well stick with a VA/Soft synth.
Oh look, a "that's a digital synth disguised as an analog synth" conspiracy theorist! Seriously though, sound is subjective and a "proper synth" isn't definitive.
Do you find 16 voice analog synths have a hard time sitting properly in a mix. I know a lot of people think more voices the better but I’ve found 16 voices, especially on a massive sounding patch just becomes muddy when you are playing it alongside other synths in a composition. I do wish the Prologue had the upgrade 8/16 option like the Prophet REV2 as oppose to having to buy separate four octaves or five octaves synths.
I definitely know what you're saying about muddiness, but while generally I'm not using 16 voices (actually I've been using it as a bass machine more than anything), the layered sounds are so beautiful with the extra polyphony. even if its just me there sitting there listening to it alone
Maybe if you're maxing out the voices in a heavy, long patch...16 voices doesn't automatically have any implications, positive or negative, for a mix...It's a MIX, mix it and fix it.
I am not a professional keyboardist so therefore I cannot justify spending 2 grand on a korg. I practise my keyboards everyday and tend to pick up bargain desktops like a Peak or Virus C. I did breakdown and picked up a mint an1x the other day, it was only $600. This is enough to keep me busy and the Gas away for quite a while. But awesome demo, appreciated.
Your P6 is much louder in this video which is unfair. Prologue wins for me, not just based on this video but on having owned both. I used to like the Prophet 6 (vs my Rev 2) but never loved it like you do... I sold them both, don't miss them. Then I got OB-6 and wow! so much nicer than the Prophet 6. I used a Prologue 16 before buying one and it was every bit as musical and inspiring as the OB-6 and loved the 5 octaves and 16 voices. Slight correction, you can shape the waves on the Prologuie after flicking the waveform switch, it actually has MORE control than the P6 and I prefer the flick THEN shape method. Select a clear obvious waveform with a switch is how we used to do it on vintage, the shaping ability is a bonus. I Don't much care for the P6's filter either. I'm surprised you still love the Prophet 6 more than OB-6 or even Prologue as I found it stiff, overly brash/brassy and small sounding (without FX) vs the other 2. Aftertouch is nice but worth nowt without great sound.
lol now try comparing your little ob-6 to an ob-8. so much nicer than the ob-6- night and day. ob-6 is stiff, overly brash/brassy and small sounding vs the ob-8. not even gonna' mention the ob-x and xa.
I am not saying the prophet is bad in any way or that the korg is good you imbecile. Please just understand that YOUR opinions aren't fact, also I know you like your own comments. And how do you know you have way more people in "agreement" just because you have 2 more likes. Damn that's sad. "attacking someone over a synth and then accusing them of being aggressive?" You've been doing that before I even replied to you. You've been aggressive to anyone who doesn't agree with you because your ego is bigger than that of the entirety of the cosmos. And no, "you just look like a have a go hero" isn't a coherent sentence. "Did I mention you're a stupid cunt" Yes, like two words before you mentioned it. "the majority of proper synth heads have given the thumb down to that Korg shit" This is where you're wrong, just because a "synth head" doesn't say the Prologue is bad, doesn't mean he is any less of a synth head. You think that it's objectively the Prophet which is better, and that isn't the case because news flash! It's an opinion, otherwise it being subjective and not objective.
Great video....I have the Prologue 8 and a Prophet Rev 2 16 and am constantly blown away by the sonic bliss from the Prologue....it’s absolutely an addiction for me. I really like the ease that you can sculpt motion driven patches . The sound is completely complementary with the Prophet ...just has its own sound and it’s really really beautiful. Thanks for the tactile description along with the comparison you obviously are a great musician who appreciates each instrument for their individual tones and individuality. I don’t want my Prologue to sound like every other synth in my studio....what’s the point then..... I could care less about how many filters etc.....sound sculpting is just the start for me...I want to cut tracks and play out. Both the Korg and the Prophet sound killer in live play. Also Korg has not yet released their programming kit where 16 wave programs and 16 modulations can be downloaded....this will open up the Kong’s architecture in share format and is future thought for users. Thanks
Robert stepan I'm personally debating between the rev2 and the Prologue, and I'm unable to demo in person. If you had to pick only one of your pair to have, which would you personally go for? Since it sounds like you have a good bit of experience with both.
For me, the Prophet 6 sound is "just better". I agree with the video, the Prologue sounds great, and many people may prefer it over other boards. My humble opinion is that the Prophet 6 sounds better overall. It makes me smile. ...and the build quality is outstanding.
Let's be real they sound different and at the end of the day it's a matter of preference. I personally like the sound of the prophet much more but some of those growls on the prologue sound great too.
Great review! The P-6 and OB-6 sound awsome but what kills me is the envelope behavior. The EG doesn’t reset to 0 when cycling through the voices so you always end up with a truncated attack phase. In other words if you have a sound with a slow attack it sounds like the attack is set to zero, which kills pad sounds or anything with a nuanced transient. Changing the envelope setting never worked for me, this is why I sold my PolyEvolver and Prophet 8. Have you Noticed this? I actually prefer the envelope behavior on the Minilogue/Prologue which many people dislike because it preserves the transient/attack phase since the envelopes reset when a voice is triggered.
Frank Manhands I only was just coming to terms with that this afternoon after spending some serious time with the OB and The P6. I kind of like the way 6 voices interact with that eg behaviour, but it’s not always the best for the situation at hand. The Juno 106 works this way too but I’ve grown to appreciate it. Being a little spoiled with synths it’s not a maker breaker for me but I’m really going to be conscious of that aspect in the future.
have you tried setting the key assign mode on your P6 or OB6? There's a specific setting for envelope retrigger. Page 45 of the P6 manual, i just had a look
Thanks! I tried that setting and it had no effect. I think it’s a matter of understanding the envelope behavior and programming around it. DSI makes great synths and it wouldn’t stop me from buying another. I didn’t connect with the P8 or PE but the P12 , Rev 2 and P6 are much more refined, and I really enjoyed playing them.
I must not be hearing what you guys are hearing. The Prologue sounds thin and noisy compared to the Pro 6. I bought a Pro-2 mainly because I dont particularly like the sound of the Curtis Filters that DSI typically uses.
I trust a man who keeps the boxes
Ha. I thought I was the only one. Dust free gear/OCD with all boxes in the attic, ready to sell if needed.
🤣 I have every single box since four years ago from all electronics gear pc stuff. I nearly died of laughter after reading this. You sir have made my morning thank you. Cheers.
Yes
Screw the boxes, I'd rather have more space for living organisms to thrive
Lol
Call me crazy, but this convinced me to buy a Prologue.
TheParanoidAndroid79 You aren’t crazy. The Korgs are more intuitive to program for me and the multiengine is awesome.
You're too logical and make too much sense. Most people don't listen to guys like us. lol
@@metaspherz Get over it, the sound is up there with OB-6 and better than Prophet 6.
metaspherz neither of those features are essential.
@@SPAZZOID100 Maybe they are for them. Seems like a perfectly valid reason not to get one. Everybody has their own preferences.
The color that gives the Prologue is unique. Sounds fantastic! Thanks for share
They are both great. If you need the Prologue for your music buy it, if you need the Prophet’s sound for your music buy it. If you need them both buy them both. Fan boy hate is so old already in 2018. Grow up people. There’s something for everyone in the market.
My comment is better than your comment.
It has a more vintage grammar fluidity whereas your comment is just contemporary digital verby thinness :)
@@celticprogeny1569 Well you get a thumbs up because from your perspective a thumbs up from me in the southern hemisphere (NZ) is a thumbs down.
Thank you for this great video. Both synths sound and look amazing to me.
both are amazing and thank you making this video. one thing is that prologue is affordable and amazing synth for beginners
@@ErraticFaith I'm curious what you would choice over the Prologue?
I have the prologue and the Rev 2...hands down my two favorite synths that I have fun exploring.
With Diesel-engine?
Yep - waiting on the Prologue 2, and the System-16 … 😉
I got a prologue 8 a few years ago and I can't complain. Something about mixing extremely digital sounding sounds and vintage analog sounds is pretty neat to me. But there's really something special with all the prophet/rev 2 oscillators that just sound so rich I just don't know why they sound so different from everything else out there.
your room makes me happy
me toooo
Very nice comparison. I’m choosing between these two and can’t decide but this makes it somewhat easier I think ✨❤️👍
Prophet 6 all the way, seriously. It's not even close! Prologue doesn't even sound as good as many cheap DCO synths (or even VAs!) while Prophet 6 is hands down THE best modern analog poly we have, better than OB-6 too.
holy shit you're all over these comments, calm down
5:22 That is all.
Great review / comparison!
I have a question about the Prologue; how much / how often do the oscillators go out of tune?
Is that only in a cold / hot room? or always?
it is rare for me... usually only when it's in the warm up stage in the first 10-15 min. I had one voice go completely screwy on me last night after a few hours but a re-tune solved that problem fast. it's a non issue for me
my MKS-80 is faaaar more tempermental than the Prologue is
I have a P6 and an OB6 I had a Prologue 16 for about a week and it did not sound as good.
I prefer having the mod and pitch wheels above the keys dimply for the space it saves. Helps out a lot having a condensed rig on stage.
But still P6 is one I must try after your super demo - thx for that.
awesome video! entertaining as well. P6 is still my baby too
I love my Prologue and my P6. Gotta say I prefer the tone of the Prologue. The Prologue sounds way more like a Roland synth than the P6 (to my ears its way closer to my Alpha Juno 1 sound).
what lol. completely different filter than the classic Roland’s. and alpha juno is dco.
Doesn't the Prologue have a wave shape knob for each individual wave? The Minilogue does so I'm sure the pro does too.
yes it does, I just gloss over most things because I went unscripted and it was easy to miss a lot :P
What a great channel. Informative, entertaining, and enjoyable. I feel like this should be on T.V.
Thanks for the video MR TUNA!!!!
you are WELCOME
A comparison with emotion-type modulation: refreshing.
The prologue will come out with new waves for the "user" section, so basically you'll have an infinite amount of waves at your disposal, especially cause they'll be wavetables!
lol ok
Nope, just saying you seem to have a stick up your ass because of the Prologue, not saying it's any good! :)
Hold it right there. I've run out of popcorn and soda. I'll be back from the kiosk in a bit. This is a great show! lol
quarkyzarky
I see you on every prologue demo criticizing it. Why watch and comment if you hate it so much.
I actually prefer the Korg in some sounds and the P6 in others. The P6 has something to its sound I just don't like sometimes. I had the same with a P12 I had on demo. It's good there is so much variation in synths/sounds; so we can all get what we like most.
Great presentation! :) The sequence and the sound at the 4:04
ReasonedWhistle if I had to (and eventually I will) it will be the Prophet for me too
I was a naughty boy and picked up a prologue 16 a few months ago.
Gotta be a defect.
How do you think it compares with Moog One... that has cheezy digital section.
Well just bought the Pro 6 this week
That does sound great. Does the prologue response to aftertouch if you're using an external keyboard?
Yes. Midi out aftertouch is there if needed.
Great video. I feel the same way! Prophet has more life! Just got myself a Rev 2. Arriving soon. Cheers and keep your natural vibes!
What about the Prophet v2 by Dave Smith? Better than the original one? I’m considering to get a v2 one. Thankyou for this review
Cool review. Thanks. I like the fingerprint thing at the end. Hilarious 😂 so many great choices it’s so hard to decide.🎹👍👍
Haven't tried it but at the moment the REV2 is my first pick.
I've gotta stop jamming and do more vids like this for TH-cam. I'm gonna try to do another OB-6 vs P6 one soon!
"...would blindly defend without honor or justice..." LMAO
Thank you for this great video. Is the P6 bitimbral like the prologue? Cheers!
Martin Debaere that is a smart distinction to make! Just monotimbral. P12 is bitim tho
Seems like the 16 voice Prologue could be a good affordable ( much less than the P6 now ) companion to my complex 8 voice DSI Prophet Rev 2
Prophet all the way bruv'. although the multi engine option is tempting
Looks like P6 has Yamaha FS keyboard assembly used in all Yamaha and Korg synths
since M1 and DX7-II
is that a Mrs. or MS, 2000 above that prologue there? Have you considered clearing some space on your stand? If yes to the latter two Q, let me know how to spell sell on a price tag.
zero cool I made the mistake of selling an MS2000 once and I promised I’d never do it again! It’s a mainstay in my studio for sure!
I wish I had the XL so badly of all of them. That big bad mono is the coolest shit
Great informative video thanks a lot 👏🏻
Tried a deepmind12? How does it stand up to prologue and prophet, Deepmind it my first proper synth...it hasn't disappointed😊
Inky Blue not bad for it’s price but not in the same league.
LOL. DM12 is all an FX box with a very poor synth engine, that said I prefer its tone to the Prologue as I hate the Prologues cheap/coated/VA type sound. But it's not even fit to be in the same room as the Prophet 6 (DM12 nor Prologue) both will cheapen the experience, Prophet 6 is a king of modern synths and in actual music it'll show up a DM12 and esp Prologue pretty fast.
quarkyzarky yes i do understand effects play too much of a part on dm but hey cheap synthish girl..what can I do lol!
Noiselab Project oh now that is very helpful....because bass is what im lacking!! So will try! Thanks very much!
i watch your vids once in a while on instagram. im also in BC.
Thanks a lot for watching!
Great video I love prologue glad you got one
Ron Cavagnaro thanks buddy I am so so thrilled with it
Great video, man, but you didn't mention shape nobs on the prologue VCOs, those i think give you much more variations then the prophet's continuously waves
I have no way to test, please, which one has the best keybed, Prologue-16, or Prophet REV2?
PH Piano Cover I really like the keybed on the prologue. The keys are fast, they feel good. I like the Prophet6 better though. I’ve spent very very little time with the REV2 and it was more similar to the Prophet12 which has a little bit of a less springy almost piano feel
With some classical piano training, very soft keyboards always bother me. Would you say which one is firmer to the touch, or heavier, shall we say? Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
PH Piano Cover I’d say the Prophets have the better keybeds hands down!
love the review! i would absolutely love to spend a few hours in this room, i'd go absolutely crazy making weird sounds
The prologue seems to be underwhelming on paper, but it just sounds soooo good. None of the harshness of the P6, but still a refined top end.
it sounds sooooooo good.
I'm just coming back to say IT SOUNDS SO GOOD.
Prologue / OB-6 > Prophet 6 > Rev 2 (had em all)
There is any way to avoid the stepping filter to be smooth other than using a pedal?
Noam Ben Shabat just the pedal as far as I know. I can do everything but insist it is a total non issue though unless you are going to crank the res to ungodly levels and really torture someone. I never ever notice it when I’m using the synth unless I want to tune the filter to something (and then I’m really thankful for it)
MR TUNA Music thank you for the quick reply.
Is that because it’s calibrated to 1V/oct?
Why that analog filter would have steps?
Noam Ben Shabat i actually made a video specifically about this a year or two ago, but while it’s an analog filter, it’s still digitally controlled- At least by the main controls and MIDI/NRPN. But when it’s being played by the VCA or LFO it is a 100% analog sound, there is no stepping whatsoever it’s a smooth sweep. The only time you’ll hear stepping ever is with the main cutoff knob and even then only in extreme resonance would you ever notice it.
@@MRTUNA nice, to be honest, i'm just about to purchase on of DSI synths (P6 VS OB6)
And I'm can't really decide, I have seen so many videos, asked so many people and still.... can't decide. I need half versatile lead synth for Ambient/ Psybeint music... :/
Any opinion from your experience with both of them?
@@NBSStudioMusic the P6 is definitely the more bread and butter synth- there's a lot more range in the Prophet's sound..... but the OB6 is a big in your face character sound and the whispiness of the notch-filter would be killer for some psy-leads.
Very nice, still a bit on the fence with the Prolouge, but this is helping me lean towards picking one up!
Stupid move. Very very stupid.
Exactly! :)
Wow - the prologue sounds really good! I'm really hoping to see you eventually get sheetrock in that room! The inner completionist in me wants to see that done, hah.
I like this new format Mr Tuna...are you going to do system 8 vs prologue?
WHY I HAVENT I DONE SYSTEM-8 VS PROLOGUE YET!
They are all good synths it'a a matter of preference and price. Personally I prefer warm sounds so I like the Prologue a little bit more and it's cheaper than the Prophet. But If I could I would buy all of them really lol.
Jesus i guess i wish i was lucky enough to have all these to make these comparisons.i am currently thinking the prophet 6 is the way i am going but it would be awesome to have the ob6 too
what did you end up with. i have a prologue and am thinking of a summit, prophet6 or ob6.
Beat Wilson the prophet 6 it is awesome
@@jasonmcgary really eh? Over the ob?
Would anyone suggest the Prologue to be better or just different compared to King Korg? Price difference is a big jump.
Korg made aftertouch before dave smith, how it?
great vid - can the lfo modulate the shape of osc 3 to give digital demon goodness that you were doing around 3.45
Whats your opinion on behringer’s deepmind?
Super helpful and also, wacky.
Lovely comp. and i really do like the sound of the floor .
good presentation thx
i can’t find a store that has them side by side with the prophet, better yet something like the jupiter or poly six to see how it compares with the best of the best. the prophet has more features than the old poly six, and being modern stays in tune better. but the POWER and grist of the original analogue synths of the early eighties just DOMINATES the prophet and sounds so much more life-like and ANALOGUE and genuine. the prophet almost feels like a virtual analogue in comparison... so i’m really reluctant to waste time on the prologue as, i suspect it uses similar tech? though that meter on the 16 voice seemed like it was designed to help give it that old-school oomph! one day i’ll get them all together!
hi, As it seems you own all the cool synth, could you buy a REV 2 if it's not already done ?
Because I'd love to see a no friendly comparison between Prologue 16 and Rev 2 16.
regards
Ps : of course, or you can just give me your thoughts about it ! ;-)
I appreciate your videos
The cat loved the Pedal thing!
*fizzes and sputters uncontrollably...* "sounds you could never get with the prophet 6"...so true!
If I only had to have 1 synth and 1 synth only, it would be the P6
....or maybe the P12
FlyingLunatic onboard sequencers suck.
Disregard that high noise floor, people!
Are my ears broken ?" hahaha
But now I know I'm not alone, thank you
I am so tempted to get the darn Prologue ....a really good deal would help.
Bob I. Gomez a really good deal is what got me mine and I am so glad I got it
That is how I got my M3...a Prologue demo at Sweetwater with a couple hundred off, is the best I have found.
Seriously though, sound is subjective and a "proper synth" isn't definitive.
yeah I think it would make an OK companion to the Pro6 but I am wondering if the Prologue is worth the price.
EverettDudgeon138 ?????
I am not a professional keyboardist so therefore I cannot justify spending 2 grand on a korg. I practise my keyboards everyday and tend to pick up bargain desktops like a Peak or Virus C. I did breakdown and picked up a mint an1x the other day, it was only $600. This is enough to keep me busy and the Gas away for quite a while. But awesome demo, appreciated.
you can get the 8 voice used for 1 grand
White Buffalo OB8 is curtis based. The OB6 kills it as it is SEM based. The OB6 gets close to the OBX in tone.
White Buffalo nothing stiff about the OB6.
How about both
Entertaining and informative. Thanks!
0:27: _"Prolog is a totally swiss sen..."_ ??
Herr Friberger "sweet synth" :D If it still matters...
Kind of sounded like swee senth.
Korg Prolog is PHAT AS!
No aftertouch = no Prologue (or any other synth) for me. I have a Prophet Rev 2 and use to employ AT in nearly every patch.
octopus34 ??????
Contrarian #1? Always the opposite opinion to reality. The korg sucks, from sound to keybed!
Quarky, your opinion isn't a fact. Get that through your thick skull.
@quarkyzarky, @Exilion, I bet you two were drawn to this video by the "friendly comparison" in the title..
I am not saying the prophet is bad in any way or that the korg is good you imbecile. Please just understand that YOUR opinions aren't fact, also I know you like your own comments. And how do you know you have way more people in "agreement" just because you have 2 more likes. Damn that's sad.
"attacking someone over a synth and then accusing them of being aggressive?"
You've been doing that before I even replied to you. You've been aggressive to anyone who doesn't agree with you because your ego is bigger than that of the entirety of the cosmos. And no, "you just look like a have a go hero" isn't a coherent sentence.
"Did I mention you're a stupid cunt"
Yes, like two words before you mentioned it.
"the majority of proper synth heads have given the thumb down to that Korg shit"
This is where you're wrong, just because a "synth head" doesn't say the Prologue is bad, doesn't mean he is any less of a synth head. You think that it's objectively the Prophet which is better, and that isn't the case because news flash! It's an opinion, otherwise it being subjective and not objective.
it sounds GREAT!!! of course it does... because its drenched in reverb. even a free VA like Synth1 sounds that good drenched in verb.
but what a quality reverb!
i used to own a Kawai K4, it had some of the thinnest, shortest compressed rom samples, but boy did the reverb make the pads sound HUGE.. haha
Great video....I have the Prologue 8 and a Prophet Rev 2 16 and am constantly blown away by the sonic bliss
from the Prologue....it’s absolutely an addiction for me. I really like the ease that you can sculpt motion driven
patches . The sound is completely complementary with the Prophet ...just has its own sound and it’s really
really beautiful.
Thanks for the tactile description along with the comparison you obviously are a great musician who appreciates
each instrument for their individual tones and individuality. I don’t want my Prologue to sound like every other synth
in my studio....what’s the point then.....
I could care less about how many filters etc.....sound sculpting is just the start for me...I want to cut tracks and play out.
Both the Korg and the Prophet sound killer in live play. Also Korg has not yet released their programming kit where 16
wave programs and 16 modulations can be downloaded....this will open up the Kong’s architecture in share format
and is future thought for users.
Thanks
Robert stepan I'm personally debating between the rev2 and the Prologue, and I'm unable to demo in person.
If you had to pick only one of your pair to have, which would you personally go for? Since it sounds like you have a good bit of experience with both.
Werekill - which dud you go with? I had a Rev 2, but the sound of the Prologue is way nicer to me.
30 year ago I wanted a Prophet 5 and a CP80 SO bad but couldn't afford it. I have the Prophet 6 now.
Not the same
I like the sound of the Prophet 6...its just better...lol
Digital Diezel what is “better”??
For me, the Prophet 6 sound is "just better". I agree with the video, the Prologue sounds great, and many people may prefer it over other boards. My humble opinion is that the Prophet 6 sounds better overall. It makes me smile.
...and the build quality is outstanding.
The Prophet 6, as he said. DUH!
Well, atleast Diezel knows that it's only a personal opinion and not a fact.
Prophet 6 all day long.
I'm definitely subbing because you are INSANE! lol
Bishop Eddie there is so much about this video I regret :p
Bishop Eddie there is so much about this video I regret :p
@@MRTUNA You're a perfectionist, but you revealed tons of info regardless and you're a great entertainer.
Handsome Tuna
Good to see Dan Stevens playing music.
I actually really think I look like him too
i hear myself when you talk about the Prophet 6 (I'd like to capitalize even the 6 in its name) but the prologue is awesome too
You might want to add to the comparison that the Prologue does not transmit or receive midi volume information (CC7)
I must not be hearing what you guys are hearing. The Prologue sounds thin and noisy compared to the Pro 6. I bought a Pro-2 mainly because I dont particularly like the sound of the Curtis Filters that DSI typically uses.
