"I would love to go back and do it better" and now, 5 years later she has climbed the same route in a day. 21 hours. The 4th person to do this and the first woman. This girl is crushing it.
Emily was the first women to free climb the golden gate route in a day . Not the first women to free climb El cap in a day . Lynn Hill was the first women and first person ever to free climb el cap in a day .
For the people commenting how Alex Honnold did this is under four hours: 1. This is a different route up El Cap and this route she is doing is a harder grade than the one Alex did. 2. She is using a rope because she is free climbing which is different from free solo (which is what alex did). Free Climb is using a rope but not allowing it to take any of your weight away when climbing. Hope this clears things up!
Yes, the hardest pitch is harder than that of the freerider route (Honnold's route), but many of the pitches are the same, including some of the most challenging ones such as the monster.
I would also like to point out that trad climbing takes A LOT longer than free soloing. Rope management - flaking, anchor building, etc takes a long time. There is a lot of muscle and mental energy put into placing pro along a route. Not diminishing Alex's accomplishment or process, but you can NOT compare the 2 types of climbing and the time each takes.
To go from not being a big wall climber, to free climbing Golden Gate, to then coming back and free climbing Golden Gate in sub 24hrs?! It really makes you see how having determination and grit can make your dreams come true. Emily is a person that not only climbers can look to for inspiration!
The first time I watched this, I thought: wow, that is awesome! Now that I've started climbing myself, I've rewatched it and I have a whole new level of appreciation for what she did here.
Indeed! I've never done outside climbing like this, only indoor bouldering, but I don't think people understand how hard this is. It's like they think: "Oh well, Alex did it without a rope, so it must be super easy and simple." I'd like to see these people try even getting off the ground on these climbs.
ceri love if I may ask did you become wheel chaired due to climbing or a form of sports? I’ve broken my knees and messed my back up bad and played extreme sports for over 15 years only curious to see what happened. I know a lot of people with very serious injuries
I think this movie brilliantly captures the mental and physical struggles all climbers go through. She is incredibly resiliant and i'm very inspired by the way she pulled herself out of the dark place, when things weren't going well. Brilliant, brilliant movie, well done to Emily and everyone that was involved🙂
After 6 days and 40 pitches, team climber Emily Harrington stood on the summit of El Cap with broken skin, aching muscles and a smile that stretched across Yosemite Valley. Here Emily shows us that it’s just as much about the journey as it is the destination.
She is an extraordinary climber. I am buying The North Face gear specifically because they choose to sponsor Emily (and others). I can't do these things, but I love to see human achievement and passion realized.
I think a lot of people compare every climber to Alex because he is so chill when doing it. You almost never see him stressed or angry but is so good all the time so people get used to that and think that anyone who does show strong emotion or isn't successful initially isn't as good. I think Alex would be really disappointed in anyone who uses him to put down another athlete
To all the "Free Solo" fanboys who know nothing about climbing, this is Golden Gate. Alex would never free solo Golden Gate. He'd be dead if he did. There are only 4 people who climbed Golden Gate with a rope: Gobright, Caldwell, Honnold and Emily. No one free soloed it. One thing to remember: Free climb means climbing with a rope where rope doesn't carry your weight, but instead you carry the weight of the rope. It's there only to catch you if you fall. Also, it's important to understand how Alex does free solo. 1. He climbs the same route hundreds of times with a rope before free solo attempt. 2. Parts of the route where he falls, he repeats over and over with a rope, until he can do it effortlessly. 3. He cleans the whole route of anything that could be slippery before the attempt. 4. He even puts chalk on some holds before the attempt. Most climbers are not into that, nor should they be. Grinding the same route for years and preparing every hold just so you can free solo it is not what climbing is about. It's incredible what Alex did, don't get me wrong. It requires a lot of time, discipline and dedication, but it's not like he free soloed El Cap out of the blue. He always makes sure the route is not risky via steps mentioned above, which is why he always says that it's scary only to outside observers who don't know how many times he climbed the same route with a rope and how long he prepared the whole thing.
What is your problem with Free Solo fanboys you condescending piece of garbage. Alex’s free solo of El Capitan is one of the greatest athletic (both mental and physical) feats humanity has ever achieved. So calm down. As much as I am impressed with this, it is nothing close to Alex’s feat. You must be some special kind of muppet to discredit a free solo feat of ElCap. 😅
@@prasan7th Free solo is more about risk, than about performance. Athletics is more about performance, than about risk. Your fanboyism is quite pathetic here.
Honnold has definitely free soloed places he has never climbed before. When he did el cap and some other big ones he of course practiced, although sometimes he only practices a few of the big moves and does the rest on the fly, and as I said at first, sometimes just walks up to it the first time and free solos it. I’d slightly disagree about the athletics, performance, and risk part when it comes to some of the free solos he’s done. I won’t get in to it, though.

@RawVegan HealthyGoddess Guess you've never watched Adam Ondra. Under your rationale, he would make men "look bad." Instead, I find both Emily and Adam inspiring.
She has confidence, and she has charisma. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Emily you are a tour de force!!! :) she has moments where she is agonised and frustrated, and she needs to release it. Also, when she's up there, she's constantly thinking about planning her next move, correcting her next move, gauging her confidence level. What's wrong with that? This is a 16-minute video detailing her journey. If you are annoyed by her screams, go watch a highlight clip or click through some Instagram snapshots. This video is for people who wish to know how she did it.
I'm interested in knowing who is holding the camera and how the climbing and logistics related to these aspects were handled. How long did it take to get the supplies in place? When was the fixed protection at 13:43 placed and who placed it? How did that rack hanging on the bolt at 14:13 get there? How were the camera locations picked, belayed and anchored? How many fixed ropes were used? Who is responsible for the camera crew's safety? I ask these questions as someone who had done the NW Face of Half Dome before the slab fell way a few years ago.
I´m so impressed she could made it up to the summit with only 3 years of experience!. Congratulations!! You set an awesome example of selfconfidence and self imprevement!

Alex Honnold would have climbed in a day without rope.
This is so inspiring. What a beautiful woman that pushes her limits and shares her emotions ❤️💪🏼
So pleased to hear you enjoyed watching it! Thanks for the kind words!
And now she's done it in a day. She really did go back and do it better.
congratulations...an amazing feat.
Thank you for inspiring me to find what it is that I’m passionate about as you are with climbing
That must've been worth it simply for the last night's sleep alone. To be be in bed hanging off the side, on top of a large cliff looking out over the trees, at night, sunrise, etc. I wish I was there. Well done.

Props on the downclimb. Truly special watching someone fight right on the edge and overcome their challenge.
Emily definitely taught many how hard that climb REALLY is. Alex made it look easy but Emily's was a great achievement non-the-less so that's what's up!!
its a different route
@@Ravenousyouth looked the same to Me?? Thx
@@PR4U2NV same place different line . Higher grade
@ensayofr I never said easier . I said she is climbing a different line that has a higher grade ( one no one would do without ropes)
@ensayofr using ropes does not change the climbing grade
Wow - I'm no climber but observe these things because I know endurance in other realms. Big respect...inspiration all round.
1.7k people get winded climbing up a flight of stairs
6:56 If you climb, you'll know these are some of my favorite moments on the wall. From frightened to present.
Hey its Adrian!! I just watched a video about him on Everest. Sweet!
I love the real raw footage - those personal moments of struggle. And what a great source of support you had with you! Great send! Great video of send!
Although she is a great climber, the constant screaming sounds more like someone actually falling to their deaths than frustration. It’s quite unsettling.
Heftybrutes well to be fair when she falls it's is quite a distance she falls before the rope catches her. At at that height I'm sure u would scream as if u were falling to your deathm
Climbing in a gym is scary, frustrating, and hard enough as it is. Imagine this.
Heftybrutes I was looking through the comments just to find this...
@RawVegan HealthyGoddess Guess you've never watched Adam Ondra. Under your rationale, he would make men "look bad." Instead, I find both Emily and Adam inspiring.
@@mmoore4456 Yeah, tons of good climbers shout from the videos I've seen. Adam Ondra is great.
AMAZING!!
Wow. Going to show my 7 yr old daughter this. Totally inspirational. Great work xxx
Amazing achievement. No one should knock this lady !!
Great video, makes me want to add climbing El Cap to my bucket list.
