For those ragging on Emily for being sponsored, ok yeah I hear you. Not everyone can structure their life around playing outside, especially to the degree that a sponsored athlete can. But many people can if they actually work towards it, believe in themselves and take risks. Its safer and easier to keep a soul crushing 9-5 and bitch about other people living their dreams on the internet... but it is possible to quit that job, start out as a freelancer, gain flexibility of where and when you earn your income, radically cut costs/spending, move to a better location for sport, or move into a van or your car... If you really want a lifestyle like this you can carve it out for yourself. Do you think that all of Emily's 30-something friends that she 'plays with' in Tahoe are sponsored athletes?
I do sorta see a fallacy in the narrative about being narrow-minded about competition. I think if she hadn't been competitive and done all the training and made a name for herself through competition her likelihood of being in a position to be sponsored by TNF today is more slim. Its pretty normal now for pro climbers to have come from the competition world, rather than the dirtbag world.
I agree, when you're relatively young and single, it's easier to take those risks. But not so much when you have a spouse and children to care for. But while you may not be able to make a career out of it, you still find some time for fun.
Daniel Kowallis it’s near impossible if you still care about being responsible to your spouse and children, which is as good of an argument for having neither as I can think of if this lifestyle is something you actually want.
Maybe someday such a device could simulate specific pitches, replete with sideways movement and rock handholds you would need a chalk bag to hold onto.

How do I get paid to do this because I try to live this way now, but for being stuck (too many hours) inside working? I spend a lot of time, trail running, buildering, bouldering, doing parkour type stuff, urban exploration, charting routes for my 15-20k run commute into work. But I'd love to just get paid to play like this. How does one 'make' a career doing it? One challenge: I'm a type 1 diabetic and so need health insurance! (i.e. the kind of diabetes you get as a kid because your body doesn't produce insulin, not the kind you get as an adult because you're not active and you eat too much food and atrophy your insulin receptor cells).
you have to be really good at "this" and sponsors will pick you up and they will take you out on trips every now and then and if you get enough you can do it pretty much all the time and get paid
Start a blog or TH-cam channel documenting your adventures. Then either go to brands to get them to pay you for giving them exposure or just wait till they come to you. It would be a hard slog to get the required viewers and number of people looking at your sites for brands to pay you (or to make decent money off advertising), but it would be worth it if you succeeded (plus it would be a heap of fun along the way.)
Sponsorship. Most climbers, skiers, mountaineers etc. are supported by equipment manufacturers and writing books or publishing material on blogs or corporate PR pages. You are never going to live like Usain Bolt on a mountaineer's income though.
She was hinting to the fact that bouldering is the newest thing. So relaxing, take a picnic and play with the kids. The westshore where kids drink beer and the adults climb rocks.
@@garrettk7166 We just talk so much, that the end of every sentence is also a beginning of another, like a vicious circle of never ending vomit coming out of our mouths. The upward inflection is there not to ask you questions - we don't care about what you have to say - but to notify the listener we're not finished talking yet, just need a pause to catch a breath. There were some women that didn't do it (the annoying upward inflection pause) and they basically suffocated on their own puke. So in the end we chose life over not being annoying. We couldn't just shut the fuck up, it wasn't in our nature, so we came up with the upward inflection feature, because we wanted to keep talking.
She is one of the best climbers in the world and sponsored by various companies, including The North Face. That's her 'work', just like top football players, or Olympic athletes.
Why the heck is she trying to start a fire with newspaper with large sticks of wood on it? No kindling, not stacked in the fire box correctly...it was an attempt at making a mountain life seem more aesthetic but it’s disingenuous as hell.
mangore623 for many sports that is right but powering up your finger tendons and learning climbing technique ( these 2 are more important than raw power for climbers) can't be achieved with drugs, protein etc.

Nomad Trails
Emily and Tommy Caldwell are my two favorite climbers. Good all-around climbers who just enjoy the sport.
I just started to learn rock-climbing yesterday and I instantly find myself here, watching videos of rock climbers. wow that was fast.
That climbing treadmill is amazing!
ya its called a treadwall. i go climbing at a climbing gym and me and my sis use one of those

Why does she put an upward inflection at the end of every sentence turning it into a question?
Its so fucking annoying..I'm surrounded by people who do this
A lot of women do it. It's kind of annoying
