Growing up in the 80s in the Philadelphia area and being a huge Flyers fan, Dave Brown was like a folk hero.
He sure was.
I can imagine. Probert was like that for the entire state of Michigan then.
We ABSOLUTELY LOVED him in Edmonton

Jim is in the top 3 of all time best fighters in my opinion.
I was a skinny kid in Weyburn when Jim played for the Red Wings. He was younger than me but was already bigger and stronger than me. We were 4 of us in a friend's basement playing pool when all of a sudden I'm in a chokehold from behind-I had just met this kid and he's got me in a sleeper hold and I'm panicking! I throw a hail Mary over my head with a closed fist and he lets go. I don't know where I connected because I was just about out. The others in the room jumped in to prevent any further altercations (thank god!).
A year later, Jim is playing with the Moose Jaw Warriors, and also playing high school basketball. There's a tournament in Moose Jaw, and I"m on the Weyburn team. The one game we played Moose Jaw, I get player of the game. I never thought anything of it. Next summer, Jim is in Weyburn and brings it up with me in a residential neighbourhood. He says that I got player of the game over him by one rebound. I didn't even recognize him! But months later he still remembers! And challenges me to 1 on 1 in a driveway.
No frickin way! I don't know where he's coming from - the basement incident, or basketball skill. I was still a skinny kid and he was not skinny!
I'll tell you this - when I look back and look at his career, he was a class act. He was just competitive. Not a blood thirsty meathead. And I've learned a bit about how to look at people. This interview speaks to his competitiveness. I've listened to it a few times and have to say that what little I know of Jim this fits his character. Competitive, good guy.

Strange you see a lot of hockey "experts" leave Dave Brown off the top 10 list of enforcers of all time. I would rate him in the top 5 all time
I meant Dave Brown being left off the top 10 all time list of enforcers. He is my No 1
Brown was 2nd only to Probie imo.
Most of the lists I've seen Brownie is on it in the top ten.

Jim McKenzie came to the Dallas Stars with a reputation as a tough guy, but he wouldn’t fight anyone. I guess he felt he had already made his reputation and didn’t need to fight any more. Maybe he was hurt. I don’t know, but he was a huge disappointment.
That's like Sandy McCarthy going to the Bruins. He didn't do shit with the Bruins. Didn't look like he was interested in fighting anymore. Or, maybe he was burnt out...

Great Interview, Jim MacKenzie didn't really know who he was messing with. He met the Toughest guy in the NHL at that time frame . He stood in their but got his ass put down on the ice . TKO WIN FOR BROWN.

Than who? Mckenzie was great...Brown lost plenty. Flyers dorks always talk big, but if they had any idea what theyre talking about theyd know Mckenzie was the toughest around.

ECT THEN CAME MY FAVORITE #21 DAVE BROWN..... COULDN'T SKATE WELL COULDN'T SCORE WELL. BUT HE PROTECTED HIS TEAMMATES AND WITH DAVE ON THE BENCH THE OTHER PLAYERS PLAYED WITH BIGGER BALLS. Heard lots of good things about Brownie off the ice. He even did some stand up comedy acts I heard. Philly's greatest enforcer ever.

Brown always Was a Cheapshot artist.
Brown was traded in mid 88-89 season for keith acton. Reason I believe Jay Miller went to LA Kings rite after. Lol

I remember when Brown jumped Probert and Probert still pummeled him. But then again that's why big #24 is the best of all time.

@@khav11 He didn't get TKO'ed. If you watch that fight in slo mo you see that Brown actually misses that shot, and gentleman Jim falls due to the momentum.

McKenzie got dropped at the end but watch that fight and tell me it wasn't a pretty good toe to toe exchange before Brown buckles McKenzie. That's an A+ tilt in my books between two beauties
@@FightStoriesPodcast Yes, it was a good fight. (And I watched this fight live, by the way; so I recall it well.) But that is not the issue. McKenzie and his interviewer made it sound like this was an event tilt, and it simply wasn't.
Dave Brown WAS NOT a tough guy.....NEVER would fight the tough guys unless he was able to JUMP them and get in a few shots before they even knew they were in a fight........
What ? When Dave Brown stepped on the ice , every spectator in that arena knew a fight could happen.
