You can't help but feel sad when you see photos of the beautiful old victorian buildings they had in Bradford, which were demolished and replaced with these monstrous lumps of concrete.
Yes , we have so many memories there,we had some very nice high end shops too until the council started hiking very high rental prices , must have been planned long time ago. Thankyou for giving us one last view of this amazing place.
The 70s and 80s was brilliant in there. The water coming down into the pond. The hippo at the other end. WHsmiths, large Boots, Argos, Littlewoods and many more. It was always busy. Christmas was fantastic. I remember being on Darley Street in 72, when traffic was still running up and down, the Arndale was being completed before its opening. Darley Street was the heart of Bradford shopping but started dying when Woolworths and Littlewoods closed. Such a shame. Have some wonderful memories.
Having lived up on the longlands in bradford and when i worked at CEX post relocating down to broadway i always used to come to here for the cafes in the top market halls, always ran and served by older ladies and some of the last true caff cafes where food and everything was fresh.. it was beautiful and i shall miss it greatly
What a huge place. Just hope all the businesses that are left manage to get set up somewhere else. Looks a great place to go on a cold wet rainy day. At least you have caught it on camera for town history. Well done Darren. Very interesting
Its good to capture this. Just like my home town of Oldham the shopping scene is a shadow of itself. Every space used to be full and always busy. Who remembers when shops were closed on a Sunday? lol
Everything is still there, almost. It's just not busy anymore, most likely because of people believing propaganda. The only shops we don't have, and have never had, are the ridiculously expensive designer shops which Leeds has in the Victoria Leeds.
My Dad used to have a sandwich shop called Kroustie in there just outside card factory in middle. Used to be first in when it was empty on a weekend. Great memories.
Thank you for the film, it was great. I never quite took to the Kirkgate Centre. I liked the old Victorian market. I agree with you on the service entrance on Kirkgate. It was just a gaping hole on the street. I had a Saturday job in the Trueform shoe shop on Kirkgate when they were demolishing the old market in 1973. There were protests about its demolition.
I remember back in the 2000s, Kirkgate used to be the spot where everyone went, it was full of life and character. I remember once it was snowing really heavy so we sought refuge inside Kirkgate just shopping away. It was a really cosy atmosphere. Broadway maybe better building wise, but it lacks the soul and character of the old Kirkgate.
Like most people, I remember Bradford in the mid 80's (1984 - aged 10). Going to Bradford on a Saturday (on the bus) was exciting and full of people shopping or doing different things... We always went to a cafe in the market for lunch (as a treat). I am saddened that the whole of Kirkgate and the market will be completely knocked down. I have good memories of being in Kirkgate with family members (even with my children when they were younger). Another building disappearing from my childhood...
Reminds me abit of the Ridings shopping centre in Wakefield. Another place that was great, back in the day, with the big glass lift and pond near café area, which has all gone now. Great vid.
I loved shopping in Bradford when I was younger. I felt really grown up catching a bus in from Cleck with friends, having something to eat and doing some shopping. In the late 70s and early 80s I worked in Bradford and enjoyed either wandering down to C&A and BHS on Broadway or popping up to the Kirkgate Centre. I spent a lot of time (and money) in the Miss Selfridge shop at the Darley Street entrance.
The 60’s and 70’s have a lot to answer for in regard to building ‘concrete monstrosities’. The real same is that they demolished some beautiful buildings to do so. I do think we have learnt a lot of lessons from that time. Nowadays, where they can, I have noticed that the architects try to retain outside facades of older buildings so at least from outside, the area still retains its beauty. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But what we do have to remember, we cannot stand still. Buildings of that era are simply not up to modern standards especially regarding the internal networking, wiring etc. We have some beautiful buildings where I live that have retained their old external charm as they retained most of the old outer shell, but are modern and airy inside. I see it as a great compromise. Another great video Darren keep ‘em coming. Thanks.
Many years ago, Lloyd's Bank decided to completely rebuild its 5 floor Georgian building in my town. After local representation (protest wasn't necessary, the Bank actually listened), the facade was kept, but only just. One morning the High Street had to be closed because the facade had cracked, and there were fears it would fall across the street. Luckily it was saved and the building still stands and is still open as a Bank. Unfortunately, many Victorian and Georgian buildings were demolished in the 60's as part of a later abandoned road widening scheme. The councils of the 60s did more damage than the Luftwaffe
I remember the old 60's Kirkgate market as a young lad. There was a pie and pea stall at the bottom end that served the best mushy peas ever. You would sit crushed in on old wooden church pew style seats as it was so popular. We lived in Clayton village back then , but my Mam would always take us down into town to do the food shopping and a mushy pea treat before heading down to the town hall for the Clayton trolleybus. Walking down Rawson fishmarket was excellent - seeing all the fish displayed on white tiles behind little glass screens and the market sellers shouting their wares as you walked by. Occasionally you would see a SHARK being portioned up. We also had the great department stores such as Busby's , Debenhams , Brown Muff's and the Co-op on 4 floors at Godwin Street. I once saw Santa at all of them in the same afternoon and was confused as to how he got around so quickly ! Back then you would sit on his knee for a chat and a little present - oh how simple times have changed.
I remember those days too, we lived in Keighley but my gran used to take us to the market in Brradford some Saturdays it was a real treat, we used to have the pie and peas too. Remember Busbys as well, this would have been late 50's early 60's. They ruined the centre in the mid to late 60's😢
Thanks for the video! We enjoyed getting the chance to see your shaft! ;-) It is a shame when we see memorable buildings from our childhood, disappearing.
My uncle had a business in the market in the 70’s and80’s. Karma Fashions… I used to come up from Cambridge during the school holidays and work in the market. He paid me a pound a day! Absolutely loved it. Used to spend my pocket money on paperbacks, records and toasted tea cakes from the café. I think it was called the Atheneum? Thank you.
Thanks for another great video. There's a video somewhere on TH-cam of an old 'Christmas at the Kirkgate Centre' advert from the 1970s or 80's that captures it at it's peak, and has a rediculously catchy jingle. Such a contrast to now.
That escalator entrance, I remember being about 5 years old (early/mid 80's) out shopping with my mother and impulsively pressing the escalator emergency stop button. My mother was absolutely mortified and still brings it up to this day. That big, bright red button was just too much to resist for an inquisitive mind!
@@wurble I did exactly the same in the 80’s when I was there with my Mum and Dad! Remember the whole thing stopped and everybody looking at me while my Mum shouted at me and dragged me off!
Thank you for another great vlog, certainly brings back a lot of memories. Just about remember shopping with my mum around the old market, could never understand why they destroyed a fine building. Back in the 70s my go to shop was the Virgin record store (where Greggs is now) Hopefully I’ll be over in Bradford before Christmas and see the the place for the last time.
We have been in here, many years ago now. Inside it actually looks very clean, bright and modern. Very much a shame. Hope they keep the original market stone and plaque.
I remember it being built they pulled some beautiful buildings down in Bradford there's nothing there anymore. It was a lovely city for shopping Brown &Muffs then Rackham's Betty's tearooms, Jackson's, Fattorinis. My Mum died in 2017 and she talked about the old Bradford with fond memories sadly gone for good.
Yes I went in all of those back in the 1970s and more like Christopher Pratts at the top of town. These days its just a multiculti ghetto and becoming more third world and dangerous by the year.
@@EgoShredder yes we often went in the oastlter tea rooms there. We bought our first camcorder at Pratt's least we have good memories of these great shops x
Great video mate ❤ I live near Bradford and this was the goto place when I was in nipper in the 80s it was amazing all the shops were so busy and your right .. there's going to be some houses a park built the old market at the top of town is been demolished aswell
Some real memories of Kirkgate (Arndale). We now live between Keighley and Skipton but still go into Bradford occasionally, usually to go to Nightrain which is a great Rock Club. I spent many hours in the 70's and 80's hanging around Kirkgate. I used to love the Tandy shop on the corner on the top level. Oh and those tin toilets LOL!
Great video. Like you I use to have lots of good memories as a kid and a teen walking around the shopping centre. Might have to have a quick last time pop in for sentimental reasons.
I used to work at the Clarks on Kirkgate and liked popping into one of the market cafes on my lunch breaks. I don't live in Bradford anymore but I sometimes go there to visit family, and we went to Kirkgate a few months ago - so sad to see how it (and top town) has just deteriorated. Can't wait to see what they build on that site. I hope the new Darley St market can liven up that area a bit.
Great video as always Darren! It's very much the same as Sheffield, when they closed Castle Market and opened the new Moore Market. Castle end of town is only just starting to get the development it should've had 10 years ago! I hope they're a bit quicker with the redevelopment in Bradford 😢
Yes, it is an absolute carbuncle of a building , it would’ve been nice if you could’ve done one of your overlays of the original building if it was a beautiful old Victorian one
This brings back memories. I remember getting my shoelace sucked into the top of the escalator here when i was little. I was terrified of escalators for years after that. The joke shop was great. I passed out having my ear pierced here on a busy Saturday afternoon.
my home city of Brighton used to have an all concrete shopping centre but it was open air, ok in the summer but freezing cold in the winter and not fun on a windy day, I still remember going there with my parents every Saturday to look around, it had a Tesco supermarket on the bottom level which we would visit last to do the weekly shop and then drive home, in 1998 a new indoor shopping centre was opened on the same site but they removed the supermarket and to this day I still don't know why as it was in such a prime location.
Bradford is a state now,we nip in if and when we need something that's it. My parents say Bradford used to be the place to go In the 60's/70's for shopping and a night out.
@martinnaylor There's a video on BBC iPlayer and on TH-cam of [late] Ian Nairn visiting the north. He stops off in Bradford and mourns the loss of the Victorian Kirkgate market. It's featured being bulldozed in the video.
@quickclipsbyjmj thanks I'll look for that video,I'm originally from Huddersfield and have seen one of Ian Nairns videos about Northern Football towns and I'm actually in it for a few seconds with my mum, dad and my sister in her pram.
Part of my family (the wealthy ones) moved out of Bradford in the 1930s, saying words to the effect that is was a dirty run down low class place etc. They never returned. Goodness knows what they would have said, if they could see how it is in 2024.
Some of the best times from the late 70's early 80's in Kirgate market was at the weekend visiting the Virgin record shop on the 2nd floor, where I used to buy most of my music LP's, sometime the store would give me expired album ad posters for free, which I'd put on my bedroom wall. Who remembers also Pearsons records by Rawson Market & the HMV store by Foster Square? Vallances Appliances also had an amazing record selection on the 2nd floor. Those days were good times.
@@ktmstardis6946 Don't know if it was the same shop but I remember Bostocks Records in Rawson Market next to the delicatessants where my dad would buy me kabanos. Bostocks upstairs where you'd go for Atari & Colecovision video games. My uncle had a little watch/clock repair booth at the bottom of Rawson Market & my auntie had a wool shop in Kirkgate Market. Yep, good times back then.
Only been used in one scripted film or TV production as far I know, which was a brief shot of *Ruta Gedmintas* (if I remember correctly) going up the escalator in the centre of the shopping centre, in an episode of *Spooks: Code 9* (2008). If it's been used in any more productions, I will no doubt find out eventually.
Where the stone market cross is now there used to be stairs to go downstairs and there used to be a wooden hippo that kids like me used to be able to slide through many a happy time sliding while parents went to the market shopping happy times
I can't help but be sad that this building is going, I can imagine in years to come it will be marvelled to a similar extent to the far superior original Kirkgate market. To think what a space like that could be capable of with cheap rents and better organisation. The Oastler centre I feel less precious about but I do lament the loss of the Fountains cafe. None the less I am looking forward to the new market and the developments in Bradford in general. It's about time the city had it's day.
That used to be a brilliant shopping centre. Used to love coming their with family and friends. The atmosphere was always so friendly. Sad to see how it's declined over the years.
Not been in there since 2011 when some of us were trying to do every Greggs in town over a weekend, I think there was 17 branches back then. Or summat mad like that anyway. Cheers Darren.
I wish you had included the new shopping centre. Building that pulled trade away from the centre. Many centres are now dead but Bradford is beyond grim.
I remember standing outside end of the 80s trying to sell vacuum cleaners 😊 it was around the time of Salman Rushdie controversial book publication so it got a bit mad on a Saturday with protestors.
Used to be a great sweet stall in the market. Alway went there before getting bus back home Saturday afternoon after been in town on a Saturday morning.
Wow! I remember the Arndale, or 'Bradford Kirkgate Centre, for all the family', as the jingle went. I remember the water feature, which was a load of 6mm plastic rods, with water dripping down them to look like they were literally individual strands of water. Last time I was there it had packed up, and looked very sad. I also remember the wooden Hippo, that you climbed in one end, and slid out the other, there was another but I can't remember what it was. I must do the same, and visit for one last time. There is a wonderful painting of Kirkgate in The doctors surgery, Alexandra Road Shipley, showing a bustling street scene In happier times, about 10 years ago. Shops we have lost. Dillons 1998, C&A 2000,Woolworths, Virgin 2002, 2009, Borders 2009, BHS 2016, Little Chef 2018, Yorkshire Bank 2019, Wilco 2023, Coop Bank 2024, Bodyshop 2024 Wimpy - Extant. The Wimpy bar used to be on Charles Street off Broadway. Yes I remember the Steep Car park ramp, and my mum used to let me punch in the code when you paid to get out! Happy days! I can't but think. WH Smith, with its massive brown carpet, and loads of Stephen King Books should have moved to Shipley, rather than move to Broadway. Shipley is crying out for a WH Smiths. We would use it more than Bradford with its soulless Broadway centre. OK so back in the 70's Arndale probably seemed soulless to people of my parents generation, but it worked, and they did spend a lot of cash to make a functional concrete brutalist building. Unlike Westfield's Broadway. They knocked Cheapside down, and left Bradford with a massive hole in its centre for 10 years, and didn't even have the wit to use it as a car park, charge car owners a pound a day , for a few thousand cars for 3655 days = a £ot of money. That would have been the time to build a connection between the two extant train stations, Interchange, and Forster Square. Yes they are about ½ a mile apart, and about 40' adrift in height. Some sort of a carriage lifting mechanism would have been called for. There would have been two obstacles to that plan, having demolished all from Petergate to Cheapside. Bradford Law courts, oh yes, and about a billion quid! HOABL
I know Bradford has gone down hill, but I moved to Stoke in 2010 and lemme say, Stoke makes Bradford seem like Heaven. Incredible when somewhere can make you nostalgic for Bradford.
Construction of the new market (Darley St Market) was only completed earlier in 2024, not a year ago. It's undergoing internal equipment fitting then the traders who have already been signed up will be ready to move in.
Very sad. Regardless of what you may think about this building and brutalist architecture in general (I really like this building; though I’ve never visited it, and regret that now), it’s a damning indictment of the death of the great British shopping centre and high street. This mall is a victim of the “creeping malaise” of the decline in retail, it “dies” for that reason, not because it is “ugly” (I think it’s very visually appealing). Thank you for filming it. At least it is now “saved” for posterity and future viewers 👍🏻
Another great vid. What a shame that these places have lost thier sole and sense of community. I do love the original styling in the "orange vestibule". Very tempted to travel up just to see that in the flesh!!!
Apparently back in July the market vendors were asked by the council when they would like to move into the new market, this year or early next year. Their decision was early next year because they didn’t want to potentially lose trade by having to move late November. So the move was delayed to start in February 2025.
Spent many an hour in there when my mum worked at littlewoods I personally love the brutalist architecture. It will be missed, well by me anyway. Just wait till Bradford clowncil have finished with that area of town it will be a no go area
I grew up in denholme , remember going all the time as kid and teenager , Chelsea girl store as teenager , remember playing on the wooden hippo at top of out side escalator, wondered what happened to the hippo ❤❤❤
This was built just before I moved here. It was great at the time, though not as good as the St James Centre in Edinburgh, were id spent the summer working. I think the plan is to have housing on the site and make it part of the city village. Broadway suffered because on the 2010 recession and continues to struggle. I didn't see the original market and its a shame it was demolished, not like Leeds which kept their markets. I think the plan is to encourage movement from Broadway up Darley St through to North Parade. The gates had been loaned to a museum, I think in Shropshire for 20+ years.
Seem to remember the fountain next to the escalators had water running down wires or something. One day they'll finally stop knocking bits of Bradford down.
Interesting to see a Godwin Mall, something to do with the Battle of Stamford Bridge? There's a new development under way in my town, many residents have protested, there will be a 'bar', less than a hundred yards away from a boarded up pub, another coffee shop (we're single handedly supporting the economy of Brazil already). No one appears to be enthusiastic. Some have a 'wait and see', other says 'it's better than the empty parking lot', but the council insists 'we know best'. We will see.
Not been in here for years, probably since Tandy closed. Id sooner go to Halifax these days. Best shop in Bradford was most definitely Carters😍 my dad knew the owner so spent many hours (and many pounds) in there.
Well, I am not surprised to note that the place is facing it's end. You mentioned the place being dark. Yes it was. I felt like I was underground when we used to go there as children. I often had this strange feeling of going into a 1960s post apocalyptic Public Nuclear Fallout Shelter. A child's imagination did the rest of the work, as my mother spent the day searching for the cheapest things she could find. During the twenty years I found myself living and working in Bradford two decades later, I probably only went to the Kirkgate three or four times. Can't say I will feel as though the building's demise will be a great loss to Bradford.
The old kirkgate was lovely. Current building is a brutalist carbuncle. Build 4/5 bed houses in a city centre!!@@ its s city centre! should have a supermarket area like an aldi Hinds sad to see going . Rember hippo. Used to love christmas. Littlewwmoods great. Broadway travesty marks sparks went. Replaced a lot by eastern bazaar type shops.
If they want homes, do what the Victorians did, build flats above the shops. My first home was above my Grandad's shop, mum, her sister and brother were raised there, along with two evacuees during the war. Now it's empty space. Such a waste
Those Glass tubes that water streamed into the fountain from high above, And my first view at 16/17 of A Peuguot 206 LYNX Gti that was at the floor next to the fountain for some advertisment or other , Since 1970's its been a place to meet your new girlfrind or likewise or chill after work, A real shame that other projects have forced higher rents and the forceful nature of bad Council decisions ....
When you were talking about the brown and orange tiles 8:44 from the 70's it took me back to when I was a kid, my parents had a overstuffed velvet couch with a pattern of Orange and Brown flowers, UGH.......... Dark earthtones sure were big back then, also as a kid I had some Burnt Orange pants that went with a yellow shirt. Double UGH
I remember my parents having something the same, although I don't think it was a couch although it might have been... Especially as I'm pretty certain that a cushion which they still have, had that pattern, although it obviously has a different cushion cover today.
I used to go to computer man to buy games on tape and disk (also in shipley) at the top of the escalator at the height of the 8 and 16 bit computer era.
I do remember when there was a fountain in the middle that had coins in . I think they used to donate them to charity or something. The Boyes store doesn't seem to have been there that long really. Wonder where they will end up, they used to have the wackyest multi level building not too far away.
I remember as a kid i used to go every weekend, there was a game store just above them escalaters where i bought my 1st computer Amiga 500 with my own paper round money 😂
Aww! I hate to tell you Darren, but you'e getting old, mate!! Of courrse, those of us that are there already remember similar places up and down the country - and the crowds they used to draw! It's a different way of life, now: things that you never though would change, do change... I get your need to connect with the past though - in that respect we're very similar. Nice way of varying the content of your videos, though: do keep it up as long as you can!
I spent many a Saturday in there during my childhood, teenage years and my 20s. I wonder what the council will replace it with once it has been demolished.
So sad to see.Unfortunately it's the same story all around the Country now. The rents are too high, car parking charges are ridiculous and people either shop online or out of town at retail parks. It's such a shame because as each shop leaves the area nobody wants to shop there anymore. It looks like a ghost town , memories of a whole community are all that are left.😞
Forster Square Retail Park = Free Parking up to 2 hours. Tesco on Valley Road = Free Parking. Countless streets around Sunbridge Road = Free Parking (mainly up to 2 hours). Countless streets around Manningham Lane = Free Parking. The Broadway = £3 for 1-3 hours.
@@danielgardecki1046 Thank you so much for the information Daniel. I was really just commenting on car parking charges in general around the Country not helping the situation. I am originally from Lancashire, but moved further South years ago when I got married.I watch Darren's videos because they are so interesting and he does cover many places that I know. I am sure that a lot of people will appreciate your tips on where to park and if I ever make it up to Bradford I will take your advice onboard, Thanks :)
@@barbaraking6980 I remember two videos by Reggie Photo and Charlie Veitch in the last year, where they went to retail parks similar to Forster Square, who were charging around £10 to park there (I can't remember the time limits). I can't remember where they were, but I'm pretty sure they both up North. Even The Broadway only charges £8 to park there for 24 hours.
There are some absolutely stunning Victorian buildings in Bradford!! This is not one of them 😂 although it does have its charm on the outside… the inside is dull! I’d be very interested in knowing what they demolished to make way for this one!!
Do you remember the Christmas Advert. 🎶It's Christmas time in Bradford, come down to the Arndale centre and shop for all the family🎵 To Mike Oldfields music?
I am confused. For donkey's years, all we heard about was the lack of a mall in Bradford. This looks to me very much like a mall. Run down, out dated and in desperate need of renovation but it links directly to the indoor market; much like Barnsley's Glassworks and Alhambra malls. Wasn't a renovation ever an option? Wakefield ruined its Riding mall and removed its market hall. Come to Barnsley and see how we got it right.
I'm not too sure it is closing soon, but not 100% sure, heard some shops have got leases for another 2 years unless things have changed. Really hope boys and body care get offered other units though
Maybe Bradford since the 1950s could only afford the poundshop architects to design new buildings for them? Whatever is the cause, Bradford does have a talent for acquiring more filth and ugliness.
It's a great pity that a building which is only 51 years old havin to be demolished. It still looks quite modern and tidy, and I suppose there are no structural problems wrong with it. It doesn't sound good that putting accomodation on the site is part of this so called fiteen minute city agenda, which the powers that be are trying to get through? Cheers, Darren.
As an ex resident of Bradford, I have always favoured Leeds for shopping. Since all the issues with the Interchange a lot of people have started to go to Halifax instead, anyways, they need to move bus station to foster sq where royal mail used to be and make that an "interchange". I mean there also "moving" the train station further out of town towards Wakefield Road, wtf?!! Lost the plot! And dont get me started on trams, why do we need a tram from leeds to bradford?? Theres 2 train lines?!?
That's something which never makes any sense... Tell me a shop which Halifax town centre has which Bradford city centre doesn't have? Halifax is and always has been poor for shopping. Leeds doesn't have anything we don't have either, apart from the expensive designer shops in Victoria Leeds. The only time I ever bothered to go to Leeds, was to go to their two HMV's, as they always had different products to Bradford's HMV.
You can't help but feel sad when you see photos of the beautiful old victorian buildings they had in Bradford, which were demolished and replaced with these monstrous lumps of concrete.
It’s not a monstrous lump of concrete - it’s another great example of brutalist architecture
Shame to see it go, it’s been a core memory for almost every resident of Bradford born before 2000
Yes , we have so many memories there,we had some very nice high end shops too until the council started hiking very high rental prices , must have been planned long time ago. Thankyou for giving us one last view of this amazing place.

Totally agree
Great vid.

There's a Godwin Street? A good reason to visit Bradford! 😊
@@neilgodwin6531 Lmao dude - yes there IS a Godwin Street.
I remember those days too, we lived in Keighley but my gran used to take us to the market in Brradford some Saturdays it was a real treat, we used to have the pie and peas too. Remember Busbys as well, this would have been late 50's early 60's. They ruined the centre in the mid to late 60's😢
Never been there never will! Great video, Darren!
Thanks for the video! We enjoyed getting the chance to see your shaft! ;-)
It is a shame when we see memorable buildings from our childhood, disappearing.
My uncle had a business in the market in the 70’s and80’s.
Karma Fashions…
I used to come up from Cambridge during the school holidays and work in the market.
It has to be done as a kid. I'm sure I pressed a few in my childhood
@@wurble I did exactly the same in the 80’s when I was there with my Mum and Dad! Remember the whole thing stopped and everybody looking at me while my Mum shouted at me and dragged me off!
Great Memories! Thanks for covering it 😊
Thanks pal. Surprised you haven't yet. We need to do something together soon.
@AdventureMe I will message you on Instagram soon and sort something for the new year :-)
@@AdventureMe would be a great collaboration
Thank you for another great vlog, certainly brings back a lot of memories. Just about remember shopping with my mum around the old market, could never understand why they destroyed a fine building.
Back in the 70s my go to shop was the Virgin record store (where Greggs is now)
Hopefully I’ll be over in Bradford before Christmas and see the the place for the last time.
We have been in here, many years ago now. Inside it actually looks very clean, bright and modern. Very much a shame. Hope they keep the original market stone and plaque.
Well Darren at least the Pound Bakery is still open 😎yum, yum, cheers DougT
@@AngelaK-55 True, good memories.
Always great to watch your videos Darren ❤❤❤❤
I used to go in the old Kirkgate Market a lot in the 50's & 60's, but only went in this one a couple of times over many years
Same happened in Norwich. The Chaoelfield mall took all the custom from Castle Mall. And Norwich is a small city.
Great video as always Darren!
It's very much the same as Sheffield, when they closed Castle Market and opened the new Moore Market.
Castle end of town is only just starting to get the development it should've had 10 years ago!
I hope they're a bit quicker with the redevelopment in Bradford 😢
I need to go back ASAP havent been in for years, memory lane for all of my family and friends.
I had my ear pierced there too
my home city of Brighton used to have an all concrete shopping centre but it was open air, ok in the summer but freezing cold in the winter and not fun on a windy day, I still remember going there with my parents every Saturday to look around, it had a Tesco supermarket on the bottom level which we would visit last to do the weekly shop and then drive home, in 1998 a new indoor shopping centre was opened on the same site but they removed the supermarket and to this day I still don't know why as it was in such a prime location.
I got out in the 1970s, best thing I ever did.
I remember it well when it was heaving with people
In the 90s. The water feature was very good for its time.
I remember the hippo
I can't help but be sad that this building is going, I can imagine in years to come it will be marvelled to a similar extent to the far superior original Kirkgate market. To think what a space like that could be capable of with cheap rents and better organisation. The Oastler centre I feel less precious about but I do lament the loss of the Fountains cafe. None the less I am looking forward to the new market and the developments in Bradford in general. It's about time the city had it's day.
That used to be a brilliant shopping centre. Used to love coming their with family and friends. The atmosphere was always so friendly. Sad to see how it's declined over the years.
Thanks
Thanks mate. Much appreciated
Never been to Bradford, really interesting video
Not been in there since 2011 when some of us were trying to do every Greggs in town over a weekend, I think there was 17 branches back then. Or summat mad like that anyway. Cheers Darren.
There has never been more than 4 Greggs branches in the city centre
The layout is very similar to Manchester Arndale, before the incident on 15 June 1996
HOABL
I remember the brown smiths carpet too
A lot of the shops have mow moved into the new shopping centre. I think it's called the broadway. In Bradford near Bradford forester square
Can you do another video in 5 years when they start pulling the new market building down!
People just bring their culture and way of life with them, when they arrive in England. It's the same the world over.
There's lots of the 70s in various places of this building
@@AdventureMe Shouldnt have told me that. I'm going to have to come and see for myself very soon!!😉
FYI, Argos was where Boyes is, Index used to be next to where Primark was
I remember them being on the top level. Just couldn't remember which way round. Thanks for that.
Nice one, Darren 👍
sad news, used to like the small stalls, independants that sold clothes, electrical.great cafe!
Carters was fantastic... a childs dream
That new market is such a strange one, as you say it has looked very ready for months 🤔
Good memories growing up
Me too
The answer to why build a new building for the market - that has been sitting there "completed" for the last year is two words: "Bradford Council"
We already have all them.
If they want homes, do what the Victorians did, build flats above the shops.
My first home was above my Grandad's shop, mum, her sister and brother were raised there, along with two evacuees during the war.
Now it's empty space. Such a waste
Communists won WW2 and their influence and tentacles spread across the world ever since.
Very nostalgic - but as they say, when it's gone, it's gone!. Are you thinking of doing a video on Broadgate - and on the new market, when it opens?
The new market yes
Broadgate? You mean The Broadway.
@@danielgardecki1046 Lets not even go into the bathroom wallpaper of the 70's
You clearly have no taste
I used to go to computer man to buy games on tape and disk (also in shipley) at the top of the escalator at the height of the 8 and 16 bit computer era.
I remember that shop too
I do remember when there was a fountain in the middle that had coins in .
The sad thing is , they demolished a beautiful old market and built that one in it place, remember when I was a kid it’s so sad they call it progress
Yes, as I recall, the old Kirkgate market was very much like Leeds market.

To Mike Oldfields music?
I actually do haha
It's on TH-cam. Love it. 😃
Agree. They should have renovated it, reduced the rents and attracted more brands to come into Bradford.
Remember the fountain, littlewoods, index and the fountain!
I'm not too sure it is closing soon, but not 100% sure, heard some shops have got leases for another 2 years unless things have changed. Really hope boys and body care get offered other units though
Darren, I agree with you. That building puts the "UG in UGLY."
Maybe Bradford since the 1950s could only afford the poundshop architects to design new buildings for them? Whatever is the cause, Bradford does have a talent for acquiring more filth and ugliness.
Had my ears pieced when I was 5 in 82 at polly pockets
Lucy Lockets lol. Same as me.
Wonder how much they'll have to pay people to live there ? 🤣
miss delivering in there in the 80s Darren
Hi Darren. Its sad how things turn out sometimes.
Will they keep the carpark?
Doubt it haha
