    My favorite moment in the entire movie is when Jesse opens the door, sees the girl jumping rope and singing, and just closes the door without a reaction like "nope, not dealing with this"
    Also, Jesse's reaction to his mom saying he looks better. Such an absolute mood. Mark Patton was really kind of great in this.

    The shot of Freddy in the steam of the showers was one of the remaining bits from when they’d attempted to recast Freddy with a stuntman, like most horror movie killers in the sequels. After a week or two of realizing just how bad this would become, and how important Robert Englund really was to the chemistry of the character, they hired him back at the higher pay he’d wanted.

      It was his own decision to leave Hollywood due to the extreme homophobia in the movie business at the time and yes, he is in fact gay. He´s also called it the best decision, he ever made, so I wouldn´t feel too sorry him. Mark Patton, of course, not Mike from FNM.

    I'm currently marathoning the series(watched 3 and 4 today) and I have to say that this is definitely the second best so far. It actually stays pretty true to the feel of the first movie, with Freddy's characterisation and the "ride to Hell" ending. I like the Jekyll-and-Hyde story that gives Freddy a bit more to do(he's always so underused for a talkative villain). Mark Patton plays Jesse bloody brilliantly.
    3 was also really good, but 4 was kind of pointless and I hated how they killed off all the good characters from the last film. Points for giving Freddy some shades, though.

    • @DistractedGlobeGuy
      @DistractedGlobeGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely. Possession makes perfect sense as one of Freddy's powers, and after having successfully avenged his death in the first movie, it makes sense that his next goal would be to come back.

    The most underrated entry of the series by far. This is very much like 'Halloween III', too different, too soon. It gets bashed for A to Z and can never catch a break. People even complain about the ending song being stupid because it's about dreams whereas the movie is about nightmares. That is something that I actually read.

    The funny thing is about the second one they didn't initially call Robert back for it, so there was a ton of reshoots once they finally did.
    The funny thing is is one of the motifs for the design of Freddy was that of the classic old crown Style witch. Apparently the concept storyboard/script was that Freddy was using the possession to drag the dream world into reality.
    I suppose you could give an excuse that he normally feeds off of energy produced by unconscious fears but with the possession he was able to feed on the conscious fears somehow allowing him to do his normal schtick in the waking world.

    Since Elm Street 2 is set in 1989, movie takes place between The Dream Child and Freddy's Dead. That would explain why Jessie is never mentioned in the series and could be the reason why no one talks about Freddy. As for Freddy's Dead Jessie has become a broken man due to Freddy having possessed him and has amnesia. This would explain why John Doe seems to be from a movie that doesn't exist. He is Jessie.

    Troubled Production:
    Freddy's Revenge, the second film in the franchise, had it even worse.
    It started with the fact that the movie was greenlit the very weekend the first Nightmare came out. This may seem like standard procedure for sequel greenlighting nowadays, but back then, it was virtually unheard of, especially if this was an R-rated horror film.
    Then there was Wes Craven not wanting to return, admitting to never wanting to direct a sequel of the first movie. He did at least agree to consider directing the second film, but eventually backed out after hating the script that had been written without his involvement (for good measure, returning production designer Gregg Fonseca quit with Craven, and wasn't replaced, leading to an art director being hastily promoted to take his role); he was replaced by Jack Sholder, who had acted as the de facto second unit director on the first film.
    Heather Langenkamp was never asked to return to this sequel, and according to the producers, they had not even considered bringing Nancy Thompson back to this movie at any point in pre-production. She would finally return to the franchise in parts 3 and 7.
    Sholder nearly got fired before filming even began, after producer Robert Shaye decided he wanted to play the main character's father despite having no acting experience, and Sholder understandably balked. Eventually, Sholder resorted to claiming that he had already offered the role to Clu Gulager (who he actually did have in mind for the part, but hadn't yet approached) and half-jokingly suggested that Shaye play the role of the bartender in a leather bar. Much to his shock, Shaye agreed - just so long as Sholder accompanied him on a trip to buy some S&M gear so that he'd look the part. This ended up starting a tradition of Shaye making a Creator Cameo in each film.
    Not making matters better was that Robert Englund also wasn't even asked to return as Freddy. A random extra was hired... But within a week of filming, it was clear that the stuntman in question was not up to the task; his movements have been described as more akin to Frankenstein's Monster than Freddy, and absolutely lifeless. He was fired and replaced with Englund, but a small bit of his footage remains in the shower scene. Englund also admitted that although he liked some parts of the movie, he also had problems with the script.
    Actual filming went smoothly for the most part, although Mark Patton had large objections to the infamous "Touch Me" dance scene. While Patton was himself gay, he thought the scene was too gay even for him. He did his own choreography, which was far less campy than originally planned. Additionally, the climactic pool party massacre had actors not knowing when explosions were to go off - nobody was acting in that scene, their scared reactions were absolutely real.
    Fortunately, the film was a box office success and managed to gross more than its predecessor, but wasn't anywhere near as well received, with fans claiming the film broke a lot of what was set as rules in the first, namely that Freddy spent too much time in the outside world and that Freddy using others to kill for him went against the idea of his character. Fortunately, this forced Wes Craven to return for the next film, albeit as a writer.

    I actually think that the gay subtext (which, while arguably a bit overblown, people behind the scenes suggest was intentional) makes the film a bit more interesting, in terms of a character study. This holds especially true with the behind the scene details of how the lead actor was treated with regards to his own homosexuality.
    Even without it, I really don't see how this is the worst entry in the series. Not as good as the first, but it still has some genuine suspense.

    • @DistractedGlobeGuy
      @DistractedGlobeGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not only was the homoeroticism intentional, but it was also used in service of the story and characters, rather than just being a cheap joke.

    It's nice to see that I'm not the only one who noticed that it is obviously not Englund in the scene where he killed the coach Schneider. Must be the "extra" they've used at first who did his job "frankensteinish" and was eventually replaced by Englund, fortunately. Heck, they seemingly included him in the promotional photos, as some of them depict a somewhat different Freddy in these scenes!

    Here's one thing that really gets to me: Why is it that whenever you have a story about a lesbian or lesbians, they're treated as strong and inspiration characters you can look up to, but when you have stories about a gay man or gay men, they're treated as a joke?

    • @agentleman4610
      @agentleman4610 8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      My personnal guess is that gays and lesbians are considered to go against the gendered norm. So it's only normal that there personality is the opposite of the norm hence girly gay man or masculine lesbians. I mean even bisexual people since they go against the norm are seen on a different view usually has slutty people.

    23:00 That's because there was like 40+ witnesses that a burn victim in a fedora hat with a razor glove murdered several kids that night at a nearby pool party, the police would match the four stab wounds in Grady and his bedroom door and that would be enough evidence for them to presume the high probability it was the same killer at the pool party that killed Grady and they would not even suspect Jessie as Jessie fitted no description and was never seen wearing a glove or bloodied, the ONLY person that saw Jessie in that state with blood and the transformation into Freddy and lived was Lisa, and of course, with what she saw, she's not going to tell the Police is was Jessie when she knows it was Freddy. What DOESN'T make sense is that the night Schnieder died, Jessie was found walking around the streets in the middle of the late-night naked by the cops. The next day, they discover Schneider's body - so, realistically, he'd be the first person questioned for that under strange coincidence / reasonable doubt for suspicion.
