Cher is an icon! Her vocals are unmatched. You just know it's Cher when you hear her. She did a song called "You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me" from the movie Burlesque. Really worth the reaction!
Cher is a total icon. I do need to agree that Adam Lambert's cover at the Kennedy Center Honors for Cher is pretty spectacular. And it brought tears to Cher's eyes!
Now go back and watch her first hit from 1965 with husband Sonny Bono: "I Got You Babe" is a classic. But Cher has had such a long and very productive career. Kind of a legend really.
This song was played A LOT when it came out, in Sweden fpr sure. Loved the effect, sounds cool and fun. And Cher doesn't NEED autotune, she has real pipes and can sing, It"s just an effect. +They don't hide it. All that makes it 👍💥
I forgive Cher using auto tune here because she spent decades proving that she was the real deal first. For her it was just used as an effect. Love this song
From her early days, "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves", and from her 80s pomp " I Found Someone". That gives a good grounding in Cher, then fill in the gaps.
Your assessment of auto-tune as an effect is spot-on. They weren't hiding it to put her voice on-key (her pitch has always been perfect). They used it as a kind of sound effect, as you say.
Excellent comment. Came here to say that when you are a strong singer like Cher, autotune is for effects only. The fact is, you could strip this down to just vocals and she would be pitch perfect and still be able to sell it as a hit.
Hey SalvoG! There’s a LIVE PERFORMANCE by: ADAM LAMBERT …of this song; it was part of a tribute concert for Cher, who was in the audience. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. (When it comes to Queen music, I’m a “Only Freddie Traditionalist” all the way… But Adam IS unquestionably a talented vocalist, and I think this Cher cover is my FAV song by him.🫶)
In 1986 I was in Europe for the first time, a brief and cold summer and shortly after Chernobyl, the tourists missing, strange and wonderful. In a Cafe in Hamburg I heard a song playing, Laurie Anderson, "Langaage is a Virus" Then I heard it in Amsterdam and Berlin. Then I returned to Australia and nobody knew about it and I didn't hear it again for 35 years but never forgot it and I still love it Just that I think it would bring you as much joy as this but Cher is hard to beat! It's all about the sound hey!
You know, the thing is, Cher never hid it. She used “autotune” and said that. She’s had a lot of plastic surgery, she’s never hid that. She is “real” and has a killer voice and stage presence.
This song and video are like a time capsule, they capture that era so perfectly. Back then as a teenager i saw Cher mostly as an actress with a few songs that i knew lol, of course over the years i got to know her better as an artist, but this was the song that started it all, what a classic!
A sound engineer famously stated that when he heard this song on the radio, his immediate reaction was , "oh, sh*t!" because knew that cat was out of the bag regarding autotune. It had been used for several years already, but in a subtle way. Most people outside of the industry didn't know that it existed until this song hit.
Icon understatement....seen her 8 times flawless. Hard to believe you never heard this song...but better late than never. So many great songs by her...glad you loved it. Indeed there is life after love....
I’ve been listening to Cher since the 1960s. She’s an amazing singer, performer and actor. Watching her in Silkwood with Meryl Streep was phenomenal. Turn Back Time is another hit worth listening to. She and Sonny had their own variety show back in the day. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves is another favorite. Adam Lambert performed Believe, when Cher received her Kennedy Center honor. He slowed it down and it was amazing. You should check that out too. She is an icon. ❤
I like Cher’s cover rendition of “Walking In Memphis”. Her voice always adds a unique flair to anything she sings. Of course the video for”If I Could Turn Back Time” is certainly worth watching. (It’s a good song too) ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
I love her! I've been a big fan of hers since the 60's when she sang with her late husband Sony Bono! Yeah, I'm pretty old. lol You should listen to her song "Bang Bang". Then she made a later version of it in the late 80's. I honestly like her earlier version. It felt more emotional for me. Particularly with the violin strings.
Cher is a National Treasure. She is a survivor. Oscar winning actress, singer since 1960s. What you see with Cher, is what you get, no pretense. Thank you.
Awwww! I love seeing your reaction to this song. Keep in mind, I started watching the Sonny & Cher show in the second grade. In a small town in Missouri. There were debates in the family on if it was appropriate to be watching the show because Cher showed her navel on TV. Times have changed. But man. So cool that she's been a part of my life for over 50 years, through her music. That's pretty damn cool.
For the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Adam Lambert sang this song to Cher... and brought the house down with a melancholy version that had her crying and blowing him kisses. It's the best version, IMHO. (And no, Cher doesn't need autotune... it just happened to be a new effect the producers wanted to use).
@@sarablack2547 Nope. SalvoG's emotional reactions and the pure joy on his face while listening to music from previous generations for the first time make him an honorary gay.

Believe and the entire Living Proof album. Saw her live twice. Once with Cyndi Lauper as the opening act. Cyndi put on what seemed like almost an entire concert herself.

The difference with Cher using AutoTune, as to say, Britney Spears, is that everyone already knew Cher could belt out some notes. She was using the new technology more as an added effect, not to reach notes that she couldn't naturally attain.
The use of autotune or pitch correction or whatever they used in this song was to create a specific vocal effect. It's used sparingly. In no way is it used to try and disguise a sub par vocal performance.
I agree with you about the use of auto tune on this. Obviously, Cher does not 'need' auto tune to sound good. It was being used as an effect on her voice which helped contribute to the over all sound of the song and production. This really was most peoples first time hearing that kind of effect, which is why it became known as "the Cher effect" for quite a while. Cher has a great voice and she is a pretty cool artist. She has a lot of good songs from all throughout her career.
US Billboard Hot 100 peak # 1 , it was number one for 4 weeks and it was song of year for 1999 . and there are at least 10 difference version of this song
Many people do not realize the beginning of the song includes a sample from Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) 1981 album, Time. The last 7 seconds of the final track on that album, 'Epilogue' is heard, which is the wind sounds and rising piano chords heard leading into the drum beat kicking in on 'Believe.'
this was the start of the nightclubs golden era. snoop, dre, 50 cent, etc dropped mega hits for clubs. her experience, she knew how to use auto tune properly, other artist over used it. Man the 2000s nightclubs were great
This is Autotune done right! Unlike most Autotuned singles featuring artists who actually needed it to cover their vocal failings, Cher can actually sing and used it more to tap into the Rave vein that was bumpin at the time.
I agree Salvog, autotune was great with this song, bc is was used as a voice sound effect; rather than a voice correction (which Cher definitely does not need). Listen to If I Could Turn Back Time-I promise you will love it

They used AutuTune on this album because it was new and it was the first time it was used, so it was a novelty that worked. Nowadays it's overused and abused, as most all record companies insist that Autotune and Pitch Correction be used on so many modern artists who frankly, can't sing very well, and without these effects and corrections, would never have been able to get a record sold before 1998. Frankly, you don't even have to be able to sing anymore to songs on the charts. On records I guess it's fine, but if you were around before Autotune and enjoy going to live concerts to hear people sing, it's refreshing to hear voices that can sing in front of a live band and SING without lip-syncing. There is a big difference between a "recording artist" and a "Vocalist/Singer."
I've been a Cher fan since the early 70's and she's fantastic. I could name so many songs of hers to listen to. Here's one that isn't as popular but so good. HUMAN is the title and you need to check it out❤
A few music critics might’ve said there was too much auto-tune. But I can tell you nobody listened to them, because they were too busy dancing in clubs to this song. I was 23 and interning at a company in NYC. There wasn’t a single night out in a club that you didn’t hear this song and it was loved.

The auto-tune use on this album was used for its effect. Not because Cher couldn’t hold a tune. If it were used as a crutch to correct her pitch, the effect on the vocal would have been much less evident. There are many portions of the song with higher ranges and difficulty that aren’t auto-tuned. Cher has never been accused of issues with pitch control, live or otherwise. I remember us talking about how cool the effect sounded and how awesome the song was. The whole album is fantastic. Auto-tune became an issue when studios and producers started using it to hide inadequacies of studio-made artists. It has also been widely used to perfect older music and re-released on compilations or greatest hits albums. Leave good enough alone. They were hits in their own right and for a reason.
Cher fue un ícono por derecho propio.. una diva de los 80's querida por todo el mundo. Además tenía mucho ángel. Ella no necesitaba el Autotune, lo usaba para sus efectos de voz, por lo cual era muy conocida.. era genial. Me faltó decir: TEMAZO! jaja

You should check out Adam Lambert's version from the Kennedy Center Honors Cher, if you haven't already. It makes you realize how well written of a song it is, PLUS his rendition is incredible.
If you'd like to check out some early Cher, she sang with her then husband under the name 'Sony & Cher'. The song I'd recommend is "Ive Got You Babe" ...a nice 60's banger!
The intentional use of the voice autotune made us call her "Underwater Cher" for this song. She's actually an amazing nice person. I know someone who toured with her for 10 years. Saw her live twice and she's awesome! She sounds great live and the autotune was just a gimmick for this song it worked.
Adam Lambert does a great cover of this song, and the performance that he did, where she was being honored, was AMAZING. If you check out his version, it should be that performance.

At the time it was a novel sound. She didn't use it to make up for a weakness, but to give her voice an electronic vibe.
She didn't use it to "improve" her voice. She used it as a noticeable special effect to compliment the song.
