They kinda follow the cooler water all year. And when water temps are good near the harbors they will come in closer. I'm still learning a lot myself, FB has some good pages to follow.
Good video man, do you have any tips on avoiding snags with spoons? I fish the niagara whirlpool which is notorious for snags but im loosing a lot of spoons. Also how much bottom contact do you want it to make? Like do you want it to continuously hit bottom or do you try to lift your lure off of it as soon as you feel it.
With snags there isn't much you can really do. I just let it hit bottom after I cast then start reeling it in. I am not trying to keep it on the bottom, soon with colder water being pushed in they will be pushed in closer to shore as they start their fall run.
Winds turned the water over on Wisconsin side for the next few days which is bringing them in closer. Tons of boats out further but people were catching them off the break-walls.

What’s your rod and reel setup
A 6'6” AbuGarcia medium fast with a 4000 series Shimano with 40lb braid and a 15lb mono leader. Seems light but can handle some pretty big fish.
How do you know what time and month they will start to come out?
They do their annual spawn in fall and you can look up water temps off the buoys. If I'm not mistaken they like the 55ish to 40ish in water temps.

I was told to wait until the wind blew into the shoreline for a few days and the alewives came into the shoreline when the salmon were not spawning.

1.5oz casting spoon. Glow spoon with white and red head.

Yeah needed it to get to the bottom faster. Could go lighter but it helps to get to the bottom near the colder water
