One of the best instructional videos I've seen on teaching the hold, thank you! I'm a professional trainer, taught one dog and titled her in Competition Obedience, but that was years ago and I don't have a lot of experience teaching this particular skill. Love the organized steps -- all explained in coherent detail -- the demos, the tips...everything.
@@goblinofsharksnacks update for you. I have been working the retrieve 100% motivational, back tying her and turning it into a “bite work session with the dumbbell as the toy. She has become absolutely obsessed with it. I have started to add in actual retrieves and it’s working better than I could have imagined.
@@deanbalouris330 that's amazing, so glad its worked, people often underestimate positive training, but it can work so well and it fun for dog and owner 😁
Thank you for this video! I want to teach my dog to hold and started with a pen, but as soon as it's in his mouth, he'll start chewing on it or just drop it right away to get the trick. I couldn't seem to figure out how to get him to understand to hold it haha. I will try those tricks thanks!
I honestly love this video, especially because of the rottweiler. A lot of channels use border collies and I want to have a dog breed to relate to when teaching my dog this.
Haha I know how you feel!! Honestly it’s not the easiest thing to teach but it’s SOO worth it once you’ve done it!! Do lots of small sessions in a day instead of one long one! :)
Awesome!! Honestly I try to make the videos as enjoyable to watch as I possibly can but the truth is when I was training my boys to do this it took time and patience. It took like 3 hours all together which is a long time 😅 you can do it though!! Don’t give up! Give yourself 2 weeks to try and get this down.. and if pup gets it before then.. GREAT! Keep me updated!!! ☺️
Hey man! Awesome videos. Quick question about step two. Does the dog have to understand on his own that he needs to change from "attention" or "nose butting" the object to "holding with his mouth"?
I've trained my Boerboel service dog to do SO much, but she's not a naturally mouthy dog so fetching/holding items was low on my list of tasks to teach her. She's SUPER sensitive and I've always worried about her sensing my frustration when it comes to Hold and shutting down on me. After watching your video, I'm going to give it another try! Thanks!
Hahahaha ahh honestly half way through reading that I was like “great.. here’s my first hate message 😭” 😅 anything a Mali can do Aegon can do whilst being way more gorgeous 😝
Im so happy this video was posted! I've been working on this with my dog, but she didnt seem to be getting it so I kinda gave up. I will now get back at it- thank you!
Thank you so much! You deserve so many more views on this video! This is definately the best hold video on youtube - it helped so much! I couldn't for the life of me get this to work, but your steps are so good and it really works, thank you, thank you, thank you!
This tutorial is really good. And I'm really proud on my baby that she was able to went through all the steps pretty fast. But with the last step we suddenly have bit issue. She is not just holding, but also chewing on it while holding 🤔... How to change that?
Awesome, I almost gave up teaching my dog HOLD. But, now I have confidence with your videos that I can teach and he can learn. Gonna give it a try and will update again.
Ah massive well done to you! This one really is a tedious one to teach so do not worry!!! If it takes a long time that is so normal with this trick! Aegon literally took about 1-2 hours a day for about 4 days in a row to get this trick down!
how does the dog deferentiate between what is a toy and what is an item they can not and should not play with? how do you teach them that its something they should hold / carry but not chew? for example assistance dog tasks like carrying medication, a bag, a phone , remote etc
Heyy! Well it’s not that they really have to differentiate… unless you’re asking them to chose between things? If the object is further away then the command would change and you would teach the dog a separate command and condition it like.. “go and get the remote” it’s about connecting the dots between targeting, fetching and holding. Hope this helps :)
@@TheCanineCoachDogTraining no that’s not what I mean. I mean how do they know it’s not a chew toy? So for example hold a bottle of beer. But don’t try chew it or play with it. When usually the things they have had in there mouth before is either food or a toy they chew , rip , bite etc
Hey dude, need some advice! We have a 1yr old Rottweiler who is terrified of cars and general road walking, he’s fine in the house and is pretty obedient..all goes out the window when we walk him anywhere near a road. He’s not interested in treats outside and is an anxious wreck. Need some help and advice! Adam 👍👍
Hi mate! Desensitisation and counter conditioning. Work far away enough from cars so that he’s not scared, and reward him for looking, smelling or seeing the traffic to slowly change his association with the cars. And be patient.. this isn’t a quick fix! Just make it easy for pup and slowly get closer to the cars MHz do this at pups pace to build confidence quicker
Thank you for the tutorial. But I have a problem. My beagle have a very good food drive, but it also made him only interesting in food. When I hold something in my other hand, his attention only to the treats no matter what 😅 So it always stressful to me when teaching him with things, other trick that doesn’t need things except treats always easy to train. Any suggestion? Thanks.
I would say it takes between 3 hours an 6 hours of training spread over 3 to 6 days and in those days do small 10/15 min sessions. When I taught Aegon I did it over 3 lunch times! So 3 days in a row spending about an 30-45 mins a day on it
I want to teach my dog to soft mouth so I can eventually get him to retrieve live rabbits without harming them, have you done any videos on the next step of the retrieval part? Sending him on command and things?
Please make a video how often dogs needs to pee and poop because 99% people are not aware about that hence many dogs dies in their short age because of kidney failure etc
Im training my service dog with your tutorials!!
I trained my dog how to walk holding an egg and spoon. Thank you so much for this video!!!!

I’m raising a female malinois for IGP competition. I don’t want to use a force fetch for the retrieve, and am exploring various positive options.
This is cool to hear, they're already a biting breed, dont see a need for force, hope its going/gone well

Omg I can relate so bad!! Haha it’s kinda like when you see people talking/teaching about aggression and then they show you with a placid lab 🙄😂
This is the best tutorial for teaching this command on TH-cam! Thanks for explaining it with small, actionable steps! Super helpful.
You honestly have no idea how much these comments mean! Thank you!
I completely agree!
I’m so excited to work on this. I’ve tried before and failed but we are gonna give it another go.

Thank you! We have trouble with tricks that involve stillness but having my dog in middle is helping with the holding and not chomping on the object!

Really unique tips here. This is ongoing training topic for my puppy.
