being someone that has owned 5 bmw's and 4 merc's and now a maserati, i can say im happy with the maserati. very different and like many have said the germans are just way too common. i live driving this car. if your a buyer that enjoys the drive factor, then the extra gizmos arent that important. the fun in the roar of the engine and the ride is way above merc or bmw. on top of that i have made mine unique and have chrome deleted w black and 22'black rims dropped an inch with those bright red calipers and red interior amd it just blasts through w colors. the car looks incredible

I don't have any problem with Maserati diesel. If Porsche is selling diesel cars, why wouldn't Maserati. S-Class real competition are A8 or Lexus LS as these are conventional cars in the segment. Seven series and Jaguar XJ are more individual and real competition to Maserati. BMW 7 series is the only one who can fulfill both. It is technologically on the same level or above Mercedes and Audi, but still very distinctive and special.
Owned them both. Maserati better and more reliable. Screen on Merc kept failing.

I would go for the Mercedes the interior feels more relaxing. The exterior doesn`t look agressive, that`s what I like in a luxury car.
Why would you want a Chauffeur to have all the luxury seating functions for massage etc when the passenger in the back should be the one being looked after. I think the S Class really is for a driver that doubles as a chauffeured car. I have owned the S Class and yes it is lovely and smooth but does like soul and is just another common German car sadly. The Maserati might not be as elegant but it is has passion and soul and gives you a feel good factor as opposed to an automated expected factor. On this basis I prefer the Maserati regardless.

Audi is considered #1 in interior design? I don't think so. theirs no way the Audi A8 interior is nicer then the S class.....or now the BMW 7 series. no freaking way!!!!

Ugly headlights on Maserati, and looking at the rear end I thought I was looking at a Hyundai. And then the interior kind of finishes off the slaughter. The Benz wins and it's not even close.

Thomas should review the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale, then all Merc lovers would be quiet for a bit, since only the new AMG GT approaches a product Maserati has on the streets for over 7 years now :-D

The Merc in technology is certainly on another level; doubtlessly a beautiful car to be chauffeured around. But pause and listen carefully to his comments at the end, which one will you pick to drive?
Which car gives you an emotional factor for its interior and exterior design (a rare thing in the luxury saloon band)?
I have seen the number of Maser growing in the years, they are certainly getting something right, aren't they!?
Do we really need that huge Merc's screen? Or wouldn't we prefer those real blue dials of the Maser?
I personally, as a car lover rather than someone that would afford the Merc from new, would be really concerned after 7-8 yrs when the depreciation wouldn't justify repairing all that quantity of gadgetry gear...
The Benz is the more modern and complete car, the best in segment and sales reflect that. The Maserati is exclusive and more engaging while offering good comfort. They will need to step up the technology but that will take another year or two.

2 things I like about Maserati: exterior and Ferrari engine. 1 things I don't like about: the design of dashboard.
The Benz is for whoever wants to go from point A to point B in comfort, but the Maserati is for who wants to get there with passion, though not the diesel... Seriously... Diesel Maserati? Come on!

i bought a current merc s class last year....good car full with high tech gadgets but fucking boring......had alot of fun with the gadgets in 1st few months....... recently sold it and bought a Maserati Quattroporte......frankly speaking equipments and tech gadget are not as good but a much better car to drive and nice style

I test-drove a QP GTS a while back and really really wanted to like the car. The engine in the GTS is scary fast. And it gets tons of attention. The interior though is a totally different story. It`s a big let down. The FCA parts and this ridiculous system straight out of a Dodge Minivan. That`s just unacceptable in this class. I was really disappointed. Too bad. Maserati could have tuned this thing into something.
Agree!! I went from BMW 5 to QP GTS. I got bored with the beemer after a while. wanted something aggressive and loud, so I tried the QP GTS, loved the engine sound, downshifts, super fast gear shifts, the tough dry drive, but since day ONE I pondered: is it worth it to buy all the above but forget about the interior?!?!? well....my wife loved it, so we bought it. I forgot the beemer in one week. I smile and giggle every time I get the car on the street. the sound of it still gives me that fix of endorphin. BUT......BUT...the next M5 (2018), will probably have all the above and all the tech & gadgets possible, and better price !!! So pretty soon my QP GTS will be an antique piece of history of auto industry.
That's probably what I'm getting next. The new M5.

the old quattroporte was a lot better than the new one. nicer interior, much nicer exterior. it really had style. the new one... not really. not as much as the old quattroporte.
I just wish that somebody younger, somebody not impressed with the beginning of the 20th century, designed the dashboard for the S class. Such a great car with such ugly dashboard. People who say it's nice are simply under the impression of a Mercedes brand in general and take everything from the Benz for granted. It list that's how I feel about it. My great love for Mercs simply can't overcome this......error. There's my thought on this.

+thoravian nah, I don't hate... It's just my opinion that people who can afford a Maserati must have their reasons for not buying 7 series... German cars tend to do face-lifts in maybe 3 years and brand new series model cars after 6 years. So after 10 years you have new BMW 7 series and you won't be looking at the old 7 series. But for Italian, their new models came out after many many years, even the new quattroporte came out, the older version still looks great! Definitely there will be more head turners on year 2006 quattroporte than the year 2006 BMW 7 series!
sonnewong the reason that maserati could not keep up with the 6-7year model refresh was not because of principles, it was because of their retarded management prior to FCA releasing full funding to them. Prior Marchionne, Maserati was lost. Get your facts straight kiddo.
Ahh, the notorious Soundaktor! Are you able to defeat this sound through the settings? On VW products, you either have to take apart part of the cowl in front of the windshield and unplug it, or if you have access to VAGCOM you can turn the setting off.
From your review, it sounds like it is a nice car but just not up to Maserati standards on other cars. My thinking, they produced this car for a certain price point.
I really like the design and colors of the S Klasse. I still think the A8 is the class leader. As I have said before Thomas, too much technology and every thing is controlled through the screens. One electrical problem could shut off one or more screens and might strand you by the side of the road.
I still do not understand why Mercedes isn't using gas struts on the trunk. The solution they went with robs the trunk of extra space. That is something else that bothers me. These Statesmen vehicles have trunks with less than 15 cubic feet (not sure of conversion). With all the things rich people have (golf clubs, Coach leather luggage), they could need 18 or more cubic feet.

The S class beats Maserati from every technological aspect. However, being that good in this segment is not that relevant, to me it least. This top segment is about style, design and exclusivity. Maserati clearly wins over Merc and it doesn't lack in technology either, not the relevant one it least. The Maserati will take you in style and comfort anywhere. Merc will probly do it with more comfort and gadgetry but, is that worthy of the exclusivity you get from Maserati? I certainly don't think so :-)

Maseratis tend to be unreliable whereas 400 000 km or More are nothing out of usual for any Mercedes-Benz.

I drove both the Merc and the Mase (while trying to upgrade from my BMW 5 series). I loved the Merc, and I think it is the best in ALMOST everything: interior, material quality, technology, comfort, space , noise, design, etc. The Mase is way much better on the engine , power, engine sound and transmission. At my age (41), still with lots of testosterone and MOJO in the system, ....I end up buying the Sound-of-the-engine, the power, the big butterfly paddle shifters, 530 HP (V8)...which, by the way, came with a logo Maserati in it. (quattroporte GTS). (the Mase inside is quite crappy simple). That's my Mase on the video (in Portuguese) th-cam.com/video/0drNMWMF-4w/w-d-xo.html

If they (Mase) don't change the interior , then I'd try the new BMW 7 series (just because of the design, and the price: both better than the Merc).

I would go for the german car because it inspires more confidence and is more technologically advanced. The trident logo is nice but the three corner star is better.
They are both nice cars but are not really competing against each other.
+musclerent Its always a discussion of who really competes with whom. Fact is that people here often tell us that they are even thinking about buying cross-segment. So we here also want to spice up some comparisons. We wont compare luxury sedan vs small car, but we also like to take it less serious than A4 vs CClass vs 3Series all the time :)
I think Quattroporte will be a nice step up for BMW 5 driver, but definitly not for Mercedes E class driver :) It's really like luxury Ferrari =) The best compatitor for this car is Bavarian 7 series)
The only reason people buy Maserati is because of the name. My parents own a Mercedez and they are more reliable, contains more technology and overall a way nicer interior. I love how Mercedez makes their cars seem like they are more than they actually charge for it. Maserati on the other hand should go out of business or either make ther cars a whole lot cheaper. Your talking to someone who has seen both cars in detail.

Maserati is only popular because of brand name other wise is is cheap and not worth the price tag. You can get better cars for a fraction of the price.
I wouldn't say a Ferrari based engine, unlimited top speed (German rivals 155mph), Ermenegildo Zegna interiors, exotic wood veneers is what you would describe as "cheap". Maybe the Mercedes has more gizmos and more advanced technology but the Maserati is more fun and undoubtly the "driver's car" of the segment.

I recently to be accurate 10/19/2017 bought a Maserati quarto Porte from @maseratiofsandiego and this car is nothing but a piece of junk, has been to shop for service twice, just noticed they missed stitching on the middle back seat and other issues very poor build quality what a junk, I will loose few thousand and get rid of this junk, I hate @maserati you can never compare thus car with S-Class
and most important,maserati quattroporte of any year so unreliable..... for one year spend more than 25000 to keep it runing.... electrical and mechanical worse than chinise cars.
This Maserati is ugly and looks like a ford from the back. Common, the older Maserati Quattroporte Cento is the true Maserati. This Ghibli is a joke. They are absolutely not in the same league, the S-Class is way up there. Pointless review!
