      @Ryan Plethra yeah, many articles i red about various slime moulds species mention their photo-sensitivity and behaviour of searching for light when starving or hiding from it when eating... do you know how to search?
      i was not expecting to find that they are photo-sensitive, _sense of smell_ seemed to me more than enough for microorganisms to _live long and prosper_ , but I would not call it a single sensory input, there is a *lot* of various types of those sensors for specific molecules, yeah, humans call it smell.. because our sense of smell sucks, but I've heard of dogs blind for years where noone knew it because their smell and memory was enough for them to find their way around until furniture was moved.

    • @nescius2
      @nescius2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Ryan Plethra yes, most if not all plant cells have various receptors for detecting various colors of light, single-cell algae are swimming toward light, and have you heard of sunflowers? and some plants react to green light by accelerating their growth (for me that counts as recognition). dogs can see blue and yellow but like most other mammals they are unable to see red and green.
      no, we don't have the most evolved eyesight in the animal kingdom, peregrine falcons, owls, cats, octopi and mantis shrimps have better eyes depending on what are the criteria of the best eyes is for you, although the last one cannot wink ;) it can see things in colors we cannot imagine, and then go and demolish them, as this little crustacean is pretty brutal (and also brutally pretty).

    • @nescius2
      @nescius2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Ryan Plethra sunflowers are growing towards the sun (as almost all plants, with exception of some parasitic ones which don't even photosynthetise), how do you think they do that? perhaps smelling the sun position? ;) they surely are able to 'see' ..what they see is a different, yet fascinating question for which i have no answer.
      photosynthesis is commonly understood as creation sugars from oxygen and hydrogen molecules - product of splitting water with help from energy from light, so while its not commonly understood to mean that, technically _vitamin D biosynthesis_ could be called as a type of photosynthesis, if you insist.. :D
      debunking the debunked.. in biology, every rule has an exception, except maybe for this rule. so far I am enjoying this dialogue, hoping not to be alone in this.

  • @samreads
    @samreads 6 ปีที่แล้ว +455

    I wonder why the yellow one continued onwards past the food sources after having found them? Wasn't the objective of their fanning out to find food? It looked as if they ignored the food and were more interested in contacting the other species.

    • @shepherd7583
      @shepherd7583 6 ปีที่แล้ว +208

      Maybe the other species is a better nutritious source. Just speculating.

    • @samreads
      @samreads 6 ปีที่แล้ว +105

      When it passed the food source, the two species were not yet in contact... so the yellow one did not know what lay ahead at that point in time. Somehow it just moved on without consuming the food and without knowing if it would find any more food ahead - technically it was a pure gamble with its very survival at stake.

    • @shepherd7583
      @shepherd7583 6 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      I'm assuming the "green" species left a chemical trail like all Physarum do, which later dried out. I say so because the "yellow" species seems to be moving into the territory of the green species, following the fan area that was explored by the green species before. Again, speculating. For all we know, they could be saying hi, or mating lol.

    • @shepherd7583
      @shepherd7583 6 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      Another theory is that, since Physarum "remember" where they've been by leaving a chemical trail, it was saving that food source for later and exploring other options. They are known to play around with their food sometimes. The chemical trail is how they solve puzzles, therefore they must remember where they've been before.

    • @samreads
      @samreads 6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      For that to be true we need to assume physarum have a sense of time - They would have to know exactly how much energy resource they have left, and how far they have travelled away from the last known food source to decide that it needs to turn back and reach it before starving to death... lots of complex assumptions which probably might not be true for an organism without any visible processing mechanisms like a brain.
