Played here last week. Course is a 12/10. Free range balls, immaculate greens, great pro shop, great price. Debate over best in the country….who cares…go play it if you can!
A few years ago I went out of my way to play WIld Horse on a trip from Boulder to Winnipeg. It was well worth the trip. I got out early in the morning, was able to play quickly as a walking single, and loved every hole. The one note I would add is that there is a lot of (good) deception off the tee where, without having played the course previously, the visuals lead you to take a suboptimal angle. A great example of this is Hole 6, where off the tee it looks like the smart play to stay left ... but that leaves far too long a second shot. This is a course I could play every day and not get tired of. I have also played Sandhills. Sandhills is clearly more majestic and a real wonder of modern golf architecture ... but the size of the hills and dunes made it a real trek. Wild Horse was much more playable.
Hi Dan! You gents at Fried Egg hit 18 nails right on the head. You totally get Wild Horse. I drove onto the newly opened course to check it out and decided it is everything I believe a golf course and community golf course development project should be! I cherish the memory of rounds I played there with Dan.
It was a long drive to play there from Columbus, but it was sooooooo worth it. Also for a cheaper experience in the area, try Awarii Dunes about an hour east of there in Kearney.
@@danielproctor4638 Played it last summer. It kicked my butt very solidly. Need to work on getting some more game before I go back again. (but I do want to go back.) Really struggled around the greens - my home course has pretty quick greens but Wild Horse's just had tons of runout on every shot. Ping-ponged a few wedges from off one side to off the other. Probably needed to use putter more often from off the greens. My other big issue was having a very bad time with driver direction - the fairways are wide but if you are wild enough to miss one the ball is simply gone.
The firm and fast conditions, which Josh maintains so masterfully, requires the players to think more about where to land the ball. From 200 yds to 30 feet. You must think about where the ball will land. Easier said than done. But it's fun to try. The fun factor is everywhere out there.
I’ve played this course more than a few times, and your hole descriptions are dead on. Bayside out at Ogallala, NE is a similar style course just north of I80. Not nearly as nice as Wild Horse but worth playing if you’re driving that far into western Nebraska.
Bayside is similar on the front nine but put a seatbelt on for the back nine, canyon golf! 9 Holes 10 forces carries most 150+ yards if not playing the forward teeboxes. Short Par 4s and the 3s stand out a lot at Bayside no one forgets the 1 handicap #11
Unbelievable that it's less than $100 to play this golf course! Just goes to show that smart design and reasonable maintenance practices can create fun, engaging, and affordable golf.

The blow out bunker on 8 was put in so you could see the golf course from I80. Never thought it would be in play. Technology brought it into play.
Played here last week, on the way to Denver. Amazing course. I wish I could play it again now. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

I go by Gothenburg a couple of times a year traveling from Cincinnati to Colorado. Need to plan a trip to stop there for couple of days to play it.
