I finally swallowed my fear and watched it last year for the first time at the age of 49! Scary, but also a murder mystery. I didn't know about that element of it, with Kinderman, who gave zero f**** about exorcisms. I can see why my parents didn't want to see it, as my sister died in 1973 of a rare heart condition, after many of most likely the same or similar tests Regan went through.

The Exorcist is one of my all time favourite films, I saw it when it was originally released and it still stands up today due to the quality of the cast and script. I took my kids to see a special showing of the directors cut at a local art house cinema a few years back. I expected them to find it a bit clunky as they have grown up with CGI but they enjoyed it as much as I did. The funny thing was that the bit they found most horrifying was that the doctor who did the EEG test on Regan was smoking in his office.

Actually, the vomiting and fainting was not from fright, it was always the result of the extreme, graphic and incredibly realistic looking scene where Regan is getting the needles and tubes inserted into her jugular vein...blood spurting out while in the hospital. This was clearly stated by both William Friedkin and William Perter Blatty in the hourlong Exorcist documentary.

However, 'The Exorcist’ was the first horror movie nominated for best picture.

Interesting and compelling commentary as always. Another interesting fact is that William Peter Blatty was close friends with Shirley MacLaine at the time he was writing The Exorcist, and it was his association with her that inspired him to switch the story from a possession of a boy, to a teenage daughter of a famous actress, which paralleled Shirley's life, since she too was a single woman who was an actress with a teenage daughter. In fact, the blurry photo on the original book cover of The Exorcist is a photo that William Blatty took of Shirley's actual daughter,..very interesting!

I toughed it out, never closed my eyes, ran, or left the movie. but such reactions were new to me. I couldn't believe such a movie could deliver such piercing imagery. I was honestly was confused, shocked and could nothing else but keep watching, I was stuck. till the end. I later found myself not being able to think clearly and sleep for weeks. One and only true movie that ever reached such a depth of horror in me. absolutely wild! I later found out that I was traumatized. but dealt with real world trauma this is why I didn't run, leave, close my eyes. despite how repulsive and in your face the horror was. It was truly an unforgettable experience. still tugs at me at times. This is hardcore potent horror if you ever seen it. Just wow. Its like this movie/novel captures the devil himself and touches on every vile thing moment to moment and just holds it there.

When they reincorporated the sequence into "The Version You've Never Seen" a new shot was made with the bleeding mouth. Blair's original stunt/body double actually reprised her role to shoot some newly added material as her build and appearence had not changed over the years. Hence why her face looked so different. I was in college when this movie was in theaters. A couple of girls asked me to take them to see it. One on either side of me, holding my hands. By movie's end, my arms were covered with bruises. Both were Roman Catholic and took it as documentary, scared to death. I was Muslim and took it as science fiction. I lived in Washington DC at the time. Everything about The Exorcist was so well done. I’ve never loved being scared by a movie more than by The Exorcist. The creeping, growing horror that each character faced-what an amazing build up of tension. And the terrifying special effects! For a month after my first viewing, I’d go to bed, close my eyes and suddenly visualize Regan’s head spinning 360 degrees. Or I might involuntarily imagine those green gushes of projectile vomit spewing from her mouth. I flinched every time I opened my closet door, as if the demon might be inside, waiting for me in the dark. I loved every minute of that delicious terror! But what I liked most was the character development, the spiritual challenges and the heroic sacrifices made during the movie in order to save Regan. Dr. Karras’ fate was particularly moving. What a hero-and he thought he had lost his faith. Obviously not!

It was actually nominated for nine oscars and won two of them (best sound and best adapted screenplay). It won several golden globes, including best picture of 1974 and best supporting actress (Linda Blair). It was initially available on video in the UK for several years until the later "video nasties" legislation suddenly made it illegal to sell or rent the film. It returned to the shelves in the late 'nineties, though, and was then finally allowed to be screened uncensored on UK TV after 9pm.

The haunting theme music is the Grammy Award winning composition by Mike Oldfield. A best seller at the time is ideal background music for Halloween. It's a lengthy composition taking up one side of a vinyl LP. Best listened to in a darkened room with candles to get the full eerie effect. Saw the movie and had to walk home in the dark, too. This movie remains a top horror classic of all time. But parodies and comedic sketches of the time were hilarious. This movie was all the rage in its time.

The Nuns walking in the wind with their flowing robes to the sound of tubular bells, and father merrin facing the statue in the desert with the dogs fighting in the background. Just wonderful haunting imagery. But that's not to take away from the brilliant linda blair and her performance and the others. A good friend of our family was a Jesuit Priest. One night while he was visiting our house he said he assisted in an exorcism taking place partly in an area (St. Louis, Mo, USA) hospital, Alexian Brothers. The good Father shared a few storys of what the little boy suffered, but didn't go too deeply into detail. However, what he shared with us was quite frightening. Although our priest fried has passed away, God bless is soul, long ago, I still don't feel comfortable sharing his name.

I may occasionally get a laugh, out of your pronunciation of some words, like pronouncing the T in the word "debut", like in one of your other videos. But, yours is one of my favorite TH-cam channels and I always watch what you upload. As for The Exorcist, when I was a kid, a friend of my parents saw it in the theater, and the movie actually made him vomit. Right around that same time, that friend's wife bought a ouija board (probably to freak out her husband, who vomited watching the film Lol) and she, my mom, & another friend used the board in the middle of the night, while I watched them. My mom asked the board a question, that neither of her friends knew the answer to, and the board answered the question correctly. My mom freaked out and insisted they put the board away and never use it again. My mom then went upstairs to use the bathroom. A thunder & lightning storm suddenly erupted, while she was in there. The bathroom had a skylight that lit up from the lightning and after the ouija board experience, my mom was so scared, that she came running down the stairs, with her panties, girdle, & pantyhose around her ankles! I literally couldn't stop laughing! Needless to say, when I asked for a ouija board of my own, the answer was a huge NO! Lol

Ray Bradbury called it one of the greatest love stories he ever saw. Damion sacrifices himself for a girl he never met. It's doubtful a movie like this or Alien would get made now. Taking an hour to build up mood without much happening probably wouldn't fly now. One of the greatest films ever made because Batty and Fredkin never filmed it as a horror film.

Maybe it's mentioned somewhere below, but anyways:
Mike Oldfield's first album, "Tubular Bells", had recently come out and a small exerpt of the main theme was used in the scene where the two nuns' gowns move by themselves in dead calm weather.
Due to "The Exorcist's" enourmous success, Tubular Bells became an instant hit, and since Tubular Bells was on of Virgin Records' very first releases, it more or less singlehandedly founded the base of today's Virgin Records empire, including the Virgin Atlantic airline company and the Virgin Galactic spaceflight company.
Many years after both Tubular Bells' and The exorcist's releases, Oldfield went and watched the movie. He liked it, but he didn't understand what all the fuzz was about when it came out and why so few seconds of his music was enough for everybody to want to buy his record.
It's mostly due to The Exorcist's soundtrack, and not least the main theme from Tubular Bells that a repeating piano theme is now used in many (if not most) horror movies.
