Most Americans have no idea just how vital the Freedom of Information Act is to their ability to know things about their own government. Not only is it one of the lifebloods of journalism, it's the reason the public can access these documents at all.
Most Americans also voted for Trump even with all of these allegations flying around. Does their voice not matter if you say "um, actually, that vote wasn't allowed?"
I don't care what side you fall on, in what world to you think doing that would go over well?
They also don't know how serious the Government takes FOIA requests. They always have tight deadlines, most gov offices have someone specifically to handle them, and even if the request is something as asinine as "I wanna know the aircraft type and squadron of every military plane that landed in a tiny airport in Georgia ten years ago" it's "how am I supposed to do that?" Another important point; the idea that the FBI thinks it can decide who is or isn't a journalist is disturbing and dangerous. This is how journalistic protections become violated and is also an attitude held by kings. That is why early modern art such as American Neo-classical was so punk and disruptive. So, I used to help handle FOIA requests in the Air Force. We were told in our training that it is our legal responsibility to get the requestor as much information as we can. We do make exceptions for several categories including personal information, ongoing legal cases, classified material, etc. However, that information can still be redacted and must have notes explaining why each redaction is made.
We also try to limit the scope of what the requestor asks, as having to edit material that isn't relevant is a big time sink that we try to avoid. However, they are entitled to what they ask as part of FOIA.
We can also work with the requestor to get vetted material out to them as it goes through. So, for example, rather than having to wait months for 100's of pages of documents, we'd send out a few dozen every week as they were finished, but the request remained open until the whole thing was fulfilled. (This is what is happening with his first request).
As someone who worked on the other side of this LegalEagle is asking for a lot (because the scope of these events is so large) but he clearly has made efforts to bring the scope down, and saying that he was willing to wait until after the report or case was finished does get around a lot of the exceptions for redacting material in ongoing litigation.
I can understand why the FBI and DOJ don't want to do this FOIA request, as at best it will be a lot of work for them at a time when they are going to be dealing with a massive shift in administration. However, I also agree that given Trump's history, there is a justified fear that these investigations will get destroyed, and that warrants an expedited request.
@christorrez3250 thank you for typing all that out. I have a question. Would (in this case,) doj n fbi find it easier to comply with such a large request if more people made the same one? Thereby performing the one task not just for one or 2 but mamy, thus dividing the costs. I can see how an accountant type would rather see that 1100 hours spent on 100 requests tather than 1000 for one; economies of scale. Do you have any other insights to how decisions are made or how to facilitate them? Thank you.
Wish it worked that way on a local level. I'm having a hard time even getting financial resords from a certin school. It's my first foia to this district, I know everything is correct. They are slow walking it and don't even get me started when I asked for legally obtainable emails from the principle. They wanted nearly 200k in fees
Redaction: "Reveals the plans to the Death Star and its fatal weakness."
If government transparency on why a coup inciter's case was thrown out is asking too much then clearly they're trying o hide corruption, if there was none they wouldn't be this cagey about proving that. If this is asking a lot of our government that's just more of an argument as to why it's shit

@@skld-xm Trump has said he's going to eliminate his opponents, and for autocrats that generally also means journalists and public figures, not just political opponents. Trump openly idolises these very autocrats, so it's clear where he stands when it comes to whether he finds those acts conscionable.
The question is whether he'll be able to get away with it, as the US system of checks is a bit more robust than these countries, but are not ironclad and can be broken down, not to mention all the loopholes.
The US doesn't agree with internal law, and even has acts to protect themselves from being punished by the international criminal court, so they don't consider that something they should follow either. The reality is, Trump has all the tools to become an autocrat that attacks his opponents and he's said that's what he's going to do.

I'm 25 right now, and ever since I've started caring about politics in my adult life, I've seen institutions that exist to protect the people they govern fail to hold bad actors accountable. This has always been true to an extant, as a core tenant of power is that it is easily abused, but ever since Trump took office in 2016, it's gotten a lot worse. It's easy to feel powerless as you watch systems that promise to uphold justice and order reveal themselves to be flimsy words that fail when they are needed.
Even so, it's good to know that there will always be principled people who want what's best for the world they live in. I'm glad that you're doing this, and I wish you the best of luck.

The scales of justice in the US appears to have capitalism on one side and democracy on the other. Guess which wins?
The Supreme Court has this year given the ICC full power to investigate US presidents for war crimes and crimes against humanity if those crimes occur on the territory of signatory states, for instance in Palestine. As no official act of a president can be investigated as a crime within the US the ICC is no longer blocked from investigating by the possibility of an investigation in the US.

Merrick Garland is either a useless hack or he felt that protecting Trump was the greater good for the country a la Gerald Ford pardoning Nixon. Sitting on his hands for 2 years while claiming ignorance to any wrongdoing was absurd. And Biden is a failure for allowing his justice department to be so ineffective. Have you considered the possibility that Trump didn't actually do all those illegal things, and that his enemies really genuinely are so jealous that they'd file bogus lawsuits?
How about all the documents Joe Biden had in his residences after he was VP for Obama? Are you going to root for the DOJ to try him once his term is up or are you going to let it slide?
