Joost wasn't the first to be disqualified in general, but he is the first to be dq'ed during the contest. The others (Belarus 2021, Georgia 2009, etc.) were all disqualified before the contest took place
The other countries can consider themselves lucky that the Netherlands does not send its best weapons (Floor Jansen -Nightwish and Simone Simons - Epica).
Those many years where we failed to qualify, they just kept selecting one bad thing after another and the whole country was like: don't send this... luckily things changed but man...
In 1978, Israel won the contest, and the 1979 contest was held in Jerusalem, and Israel won again. The 1980 contest was going to be in Jerusalem again, then Israel withdrew from as being hosts and withdrew their selected song for 1980. The Netherlands stood in as hosts for 1980. The very first contest in 1956 with 7 countries participating entering 2 songs , there was only one jury in Switzerland ,their job was to vote for a winning song so there are no 2nd. 3rd places etc. 1957 was the first year of voting from the international juries participating in the contest and the first year using a scoreboard.
No one noticing that we sent a woman of colour in the 60s? Milly Scott was very popular. And the Netherlands already very multicultural compared to many other nations. 😊
