- What do you think about this $5 set of 48 colors from Sargent Art available at the Dollar Tree?
Don't care about these colors, that's fine, there's also a bonus watercolor snapdragon tutorial thrown in here!

I started my watercolour journey with pans like these, probably a 12 colour set for about $25nzd, and for the longest time i thought i couldnt paint! They would dry so chalky and wouldnt move nicely. After my mother died i had a bit of money and was sad so decided to try a WN palette. At about $120nzd it was a JUMP but i was seriously joy seeking! Suddenly my pictures weren't demoralizingly awful! It was a starter palette so i could mix almost anything i needed (eventually invested in a CMY flavoured palette with some umber and sienna and then REALLY could make whatever i wanted. I guess thats what a printing background does to you.) It felt nice to paint, used less paint, and the results actually allowed me to see that i was improving. I think perhaps its easier to work with the cheaper paints once you have worked with more expensive ones so you know how the colours should work.
I wish access to quality art supplies was easier for everyone. The benefits to mental health are immeasurable.
I know exactly what you mean. Some sets can be great of various price points can be great, but the ones that aren't and are soo bad can deter you so much. I'm glad that you found a set that helped bring you some joy. My condolences for your mother's passing.
Hey, local cheap artist here, recently dollar tree has been selling a mini prang watercolor set, very small but still pretty nice, not too chalky and a great starting point for beginners I think!!
Thanks, I'm going to give them a try... will help knowing to keep these points in mind!
Love all your videos! You're an amazing artist.
This is not an art request, but do you think you could post a tutorial short on how you do your hair? I love it! ❤
I actually posted a tutorial of my hair recently on my tt and ig 🙈
Where can I purchase your watercolor paints? @@RebelUnicornCrafts
Thanks for the demo. I think they would be great paints to travel with and if you left them behind you wouldn’t be out much money……love this snap dragons❤
I think it would be a set I would give to my kids, that I would enjoy painting with too.
Totally! Fun for all!
Hello Beautiful😊 enjoyed this video... I L💖VE snapdragons and I will at some stage try doing these🙂😁 I have to try a few things to learn a few things about what i have on hand first... well thats where I'm starting🙃
Have an awesome day 💗
Thanks for taking your time to demonstrate to us how to judge quality of paints. Very helpful!
Of course- glad it was helpful! 😊
I just bought these today! Thank you for the review! I'm a beginner so I think these will work great for now!
Thank you for such a thorough review!=3
My pleasure!
Thanks for doing this, so thorough.
My dollar tree doesn't carry these. I thought I wasn't going to find the $1.25 one but I did on the crafts aisle. Excited to try them out. I'm a total newbie at watercolor so that's why I got the dollar tree ones.
Winsor and newton cotman are great watercolors for beginners.
Fair price, W&N professional watercolor half pans are more expensive than professional tubes though.
The dollar tree near me just added a $3-5 section (🤦♀️) a month ago so you might be able to find it over the next few years. They don’t really change inventory that often, or change up the variety either, so you’d likely be able to find soon.
I definitely would not use these paints myself (the Meesdn paints are as low as I go) but I’d definitely use them with a younger child who wants to paint with me..
Agree, great for kids or maybe someone just starting to dabble and scared to invest in themselves a little bit, but probably not for long term
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Have you tested the watercolours from Temu?
I have not and do not plan to.
How well do they mix?
So I randomly TH-cam’d watercolor paints cuz I’ve been seeing that exact pallet and wanted to know if it was worth it! I wanna experiment with watercolors so I really appreciate your video and the time you took to do the swatches with comparison and even the painting at the end! I know nothing about watercolor painting and was able to keep up with what you were saying so I love that! I think ima give it a go to see if it’s for me hahah thanks so much! I def subscribed ! 🤗
I hope you have so much fun! Watercolors can be so fun to learn! 🥰🥰🥰
@@RebelUnicornCrafts thanks ! I’m excited ! It looks like a lot of fun ! 👍
I've used cheap crappy watercolors of many types. With them, it is frustrating to try techniques from demonstrations (with better sets) and find the cheap sets don't behave the way they "should". That said, you can still be creative and work with them, just with (severe) limitations. Because of this, I'd only recommend this set for young children, or older children who are just messing around, not interested in learning techniques.
Totally agree. Sometimes people need a set to dip their toe in and don't necessarily want to drop $40+ on a fancy set or then feel they shouldn't 'waste' them because they're still learning. There's some really bad sets out there, but often the best supply is one someone will use 😊
Took a few sets but when they either have a jelly lay down look or that chalk look now won’t get them!
Don’t have to get most expensive but many decent brands than frustrate yourself with these kinds.
Kids maybe.
Just for fun,
LOL I bought this set and got moldy on me. 😂
oh no!
They did for me as well but I live in Hawaii and it’s very humid here. I think I closed the lid before letting them dry completely too.
@rupaliembry You could be on to something as I'm in Florida. I just stay away from cheap, unknown watercolors now. Lesson learned 🙂
I save those cheap brushes for glue or mixing crap with ya know....
Good idea
@@RebelUnicornCrafts Im also getting ready for FINALLY take my time with my watercolors that Ive had for a long time...and test them and see whats what with them all. Ive got the in cubes, rounds, tubes, pens and pencils. Im going to keep the good ones and give the all the others to my god daughter for her and her daughter to use and practice with and learn. I mainly paint in acrylics but a good set of watercolor for fun would be nice.
I've got some recommendations in my supply guide, if you'd like to be spared some of the trial and error/disappointment. tinyurl.com/supplyguide

You realize that all these cheapo paints are all made in the same place, then branded with different names.
Spoil sport. Everyone knows they are made in China. Probably by the same manufacturer.
