I have replaced the hot water heater, still have sulfer smell with cold and not so much with hot water. House was built in 1977, no filter to my knowledge is on the well. We use to have Awesome tasting water w/out a filter. Then all of a sudden the sulfer smell was there. Replaced hot water heater yesterday, the smell seemed like it was gone. Today I notice the cold water has that smell again, no so much for hot water. We drilled the well some years ago and tapped into a natural spring that feeds a pond in front of my house. We struck water at about 275 feet and went down to 300 feet. The well to my knowledge has never been sanitized, do I need to do this?

Not unusual, Bacteria can come from anywhere in your water supply. Well shock treatment will do the job ...... Just for routine maintenance keep doing it about every 6 months

What are you supposed to do without water for 36 hours twice a year?

Have to plan ahead. Buy some bottled water to cover those times.

Are you a new homeowner with questions about your well in the Charlotte NC area? Call to schedule an inspection.

Could bacteria be the cause of black streaks in the toilets? The well and tank were flushed and there is an in line filter which shows no collection of sediment, but streaks still develop after 3 or 4 days after cleaning.

Possibly high manganese level in the water. Bacteria rarely have any obvious indications (other than on occasion smell). You can get your water tested for specific containments. Just use an independent lab though. Lot of filtration companies are more concerned with a sale rather than actually analysis.

    can one use pool bleach

I would not, its a different blend and you could over shock it. Over shocking can lead to discoloration of clothing and other household items. Go to Lowes or HD and get the germicidal bleach.

      No

@@bigkahuna3085 Ehh..no the answer is maybe. If it is straight calcium hypochlorite, it can be used. Its what the small water plant I use to work for used. When we switched to liquid sodium hypochlorite, we sold the excess dry calcium hypo to some local pools. The different types of bleach really on differ in strength so dosage amounts can change. Additives are a no no obviously so whatever you use it needs to be bleach and nothing else(like perfumes or other additives.)
