  • @Tracotel

    The 6th symphony is by far the most extreme and emotionally charged piece that Mahler ever composed. It is simultaneously characterized by formal discipline and consistency, featuring a complex and intricately woven finale that showcases his boldest combinatory contrapuntal prowess. The 6th symphony has no equal and was Mahler's personal favorite.

      Final movement is a gem, scherzo is pretty decent, andante has one of the the most beautiful climaxes of all time imo (almost on the level of that release a third of the way through Rach 2 mov 3), and the first movement is just awesome. So much relentless intensity.

      I used to love the symphony number 5 so much.... I memorized it and now it bores me that I listen to performances that are never "perfect"... They have ceised to surprise and refresh me as it used to do.
      On the other hand, the seventh symphony goes so well, above, under, behind, across and amid a dense, living magical musical lanscape, I think it's my favorite now, instead of the fifth.

    • @dan-us6nk
      @dan-us6nk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The seventh is an exception?
      In my opinion the seventh is excellent. It's fresh, it's diving deep into the magical "forest" it creates, it explores and dances. It's lightmotivs are stimulating me to intellectual arousal.
      But these are all opinions. We can all agree that Mahler music is great regardless, because that's not an opinion anymore :)

    • @maestrospolzino

      @@dan-us6nk
      All of Mahler's compositions are technically excellent, but the seventh, in particular, I don't like very much. I don't know, I think it sounds less epic compared to the others. It seems to me that Mahler wanted to create something "different" in this symphony. But either way, that doesn't mean the symphony is bad! None of Mahler's work can be considered "bad"! Anyone who says that is a heretic! Hahaha

    The AI for the most part parroting received opinion putting the critically acclaimed 9 at number 1. main anomalies is the least popular 7 being so high and 1 and 5 being fairly low.
    2 is my favourite I don’t care if it’s cliche, 3,4 and 6 probably being the other Mahler symphonies which maintain a constant fascination for me. Because they’re all so good I really do think this one’s completely subjective and wouldn’t judge anyone for their favourite symphony. What I will say is that at the end of the day I probably wouldn’t disagree with the critical consensus which says that 9 and Das Lied Von Der Erde are his most important works.

    • @dan-us6nk
      @dan-us6nk ปีที่แล้ว

      Opinion:
      Symphony number 4 is the most simple symphony by Mahler. It shares a lot of material with other symphonies, and generally lacks more driving emotions.
      It can make you feel good, but I feel that the first parts are cheerful in their opening to the symphony (which we all agree - a Mahler's symphony is like a world), and the finale is just... dull? It doesn't seem to go anywhere unexpectedly far, or diverse, or strong, unlike any other Mahler epic finale.
      2 is a brilliant work that is of tremendous peaks in what we can even fathom as humans - the emotions I get floating around my head while listening to it during it's less than an hour and a half's time are equivalent to the emotions I'm filled with from weeks, even months during my life (which in this age is very hormonal and emotional).
      3 has given me peace... just like me, it takes time to do it's thing but when it's given the attention for it's duration, it's very effective.
      First movement like a symphony of it's own, followed by charming dances of love, then (for me) a Kafka-esque piece that depicts absirdity, then immense hope and pride, joy, and lastly - peace.
      Symphony number 6 is a banger.

    I actually agree with some of its notes on the 3rd symphony, particularly the length of the work, but i have to say Mahler's 9th being ranked 13th really confused me. I thought the adagio was incredible (actually my favorite movement of his and arguably my favorite ~20 minutes in all orchestral music)

    I was very interesting. My opinion that Mahler's best symphony is symphony no.9 too same this AI chat.
    I have Gustav Mahler's symphony No.9 many discs,compact disc,only one LP(I think analog disc movement is only Anachronism),
    DVD,Blu-ray video,Blu-ray audio,and other sound or visual source.
    But I can't decide on the number one performance because this music works is very magnificent.
    I like Vaclav Neumann(1995,his last recording),Herbert von Karajan of both 1979,1980,and 1982,Simon Rattle and Berliner Philharmoniker,Daniel Harding and Swedish Radio Symphony,and other many brilliant performances.
    If someone this comment read,Thank you reading very much!

    Setting aside both the issue with counting down and the fact that it should be including the 10th and Das Lied in its ranking, there are actual reasonable opinions in here (gleaned from what the internet says about the symphonies, presumably). At the very least, the descriptions of the symphonies are reasonably accurate as far as they go. It would be weird to put 7 so high in the ranking, and both 1 and 5 seem a bit short-changed, but I can sort of imagine a human critic with a fixation on the 7th symphony coming up with something like this. Better than expected, over all.

  • @ApsisApocynthion
    @ApsisApocynthion ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah this sounds like the amalgamation of critical takes on Mahler symphonies, which is a shame because music critics are best know for their terrible reception of great works. Or their otherwise, unoriginal fawning praise (circle jerk) where they act like great works have no weaknesses.
    The 8th symphony ranks low because it is rarely performed/recorded. Otherwise, it would rank just as high as the 2nd symphony among his top 3 works (with the 9th). It was the peak of Mahler’s career and his best received work during his lifetime, despite his personal life crumbling simultaneously.
    I think his 3rd is arguably the worst since it lacks the focus of his other works and the music doesn’t quite live up to the scope of the work, but honestly, I just don’t like the first movement very much. It’s very repetitive and thematically dull. The rest of the symphony is great. Too bad the first movement is like 35 mins. Usually.
    The remaining symphonies can be ordered any which way depending on what the listener appreciates more. #1 and #4 are playful, focused works, that deliver thematically. #6 and #7 are abstract works that play with form, instrumentation, and theme development in unique ways. #5 is just the Classical minor to major symphony (like Beethoven’s), but from the lens of an early modern composer. It’s his second most intimate work (after the 9th) and explores some psychological themes of artistic legacy and sentimentality.
