Enola Holmes, the movie based on the first book in The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer, became a huge success for Netflix. The movie starred Millie Bobby Brown, famous for her iconic role as Eleven in Stranger Things, Henry Cavill, and Sam Claflin as the three Holmes siblings Enola, Sherlock, and Mycroft.

i would love to see enola and tewkesbury together in this movie but i don't want them them to take anything away from enola's character. i think that she can still be very independent and strong while being in a loving relationship. tewkesbury is so supportive of her and i think that their relationship won't damage her independent character
Yeah, if they turn her into another gay character I'm not watching it. We already have too many feminist characters turn gay and the studio miss the point in feminism a lot. I'm also a feminism but I'm not gay.
I am surprised because the movie is supposed to be darker than the book. I think the first book was much darker than the movie. The poverty and desperation of the poorest in London was shown much more clearly in the book, like the old woman who was so sick and weak that she could only crawl.
And Enola being lesbian? Never saw that in the books. She appeared pretty asexual to me there. And in the first movie I did get the impression that she has romantic feelings for Tewkesbury. I'd hate her becoming a tame housewife, but I wouldn't have a problem with her marrying Tewkesbury and still working as a detective. I think that a woman can have both marriage and a carreer is a better message than that Enola has to choose between freedom and a family - her two great longings.

I didn't get the lesbian vibe at all from the first movie. It would be really insulting if they make her gay simply because she's a strong independent woman who doesn't need a man. Adding gay characters just to have them is annoying and strikes me as using them as a way to check a box.

If the books were so good that they are being made into movies, why would you want to change them? Once you start changing them, they may not be the books you fell in love with any longer.

I respect they are trying to add more diversity into characters but I simply do not get lesbian vibes from her character. I don't think every movie needs to add that aspect if it doesn't fit the theme or character. I still think she can be strong and independent, if she's with her friend or not. She's more afraid of a man that would hold her back or not support her and he very much does. I think there are plenty of independent women out there who still fall in love with a person that supports that characteristic about them. Which gives major props to the guys as well, showing they don't feel threatened by a powerful woman and that he respects her as an equal, which would have been tough to find in that Era. But I'm perfectly okay if they just become crime solving partners as well!

Well said, sometimes a story is just a story as the author wrote it and not every aspect of society needs to be represented unless it furthers that story, or was the intention of the author. If someone wishes for a certain group to be the heroine, hero, or otherwise...they should write said stories and share them with the world. Heck, didn't Enola's creator "borrow" from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original character to create a formidable young woman as the lead character. Perhaps the Holmes family is about to get a lot bigger?!
Please Netflix do not make Enola Holmes a lesbian. Looking forward to seeing Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, he played him wonderfully in Season 1!!
I really don't think Enola should be a lesbian I also don't think she should date Tewkesbury but that's a 50/50 thing bc, on the other hand, I would be absolutely happy for her if she did date him bc let's be honest we all love the way he supports and encourages Enola she is obviously a very independent and strong woman but that type woman also want love not only that being independent strong woman doesn't mean you are a lesbian.

Not every movie needs to have romantic relationships. Especially when it doesn't further the plot.
Why does she need to be gay to be strong and independent of mind? You can still want a relationship with a guy and be independent of mind. Also on that note, just because some women don’t want a relationship at one point in their lives doesn’t mean they won’t change they feel about that at some point, or maybe that won’t, but that’s called growth.

Why do so many US people describe characters as "titular", which means nominal or token, rather than eponymous, which means the character after whom the book or movie is named?
I think for many US people (like myself), we use different words for the things. Some people think that titular is almost synonymous with "title." Kinda like how in the US, the first Harry Potter book had sorcerer instead of philosopher. Different places use different words.
I don't think it needs any romance at all. Just let her solve mysteries. The shippers vill shipp and have fun with that anyway. It's fine but don't have to afect the actuall movie. Encurageing all sides in a shipping war and watching the fandom burn is a good way to kill a franchise.

I really love having LGBTQ+ Characters. However, I hate when characters are changed to be LBGTQ+ when they were originally straight. If the situation were reversed people would call it Homophobic.
Exactly, I hate the stereotype of every strong independent woman has to be queer. If they want to explore the fact that, I suspec,t she's demisexual that would be fine. Because that's in keeping with the character.
During this time period the average age for girls to get married was between 13 and 17. Enola didn't want a husband, because that was the norm and she wanted to do other things. That doesn't mean she is a lesbian.
I don't really see why people want enola to have a boyfriend. Sure those two have a very good bond, but why can't they just be friends? It would defeat a big plotpoint from the first movie. Enola wanted to be independant and stand on her own two feet. Also how old is Enola right now? Around 16 a 18 years I think in the movie. She still has her brother to be her guardian and Millie is around 18 I believe? There is more than enough time to dive into her relationships in the 3th movie or something. I hope that if the dive in her romantic it would be at its earliest at the end of the second movie, or even better later. Let Enola be a little longer a free spirit. Also again, Boys and Girls can be friends without romantic...

The way I understood it is that Enola was raised to become and independent woman and not succumb to societal pressure of having to becoming a quiet man obeying housewife with no voice. Like it's shown, her mom belongs to a secret group of women fighting for a cause. Why does Enola have to be a lesbian ? Why can't we have characters of straight independent women who want to stand on their own going against societies norm. It's possible for male characters to remain unmarried all their life 🤷♀️ I'm all for everyone love who they want to but stop turning women characters gay instead of letting them be independent and showing the world they don't need to be married to live a happy single life.
BECAUSE THERE ISN'T A LOT OF LGBTQI REPRESENTATIONS IN MEDIA EXCEPT IN MOVIES LIKE LOVE SIMON AND TV SHOWS LIKE STRANGER THINGS. i we have so much heterosexual representation on all sorts of movies and tv shows and in fairytales too like cinderella who married a prince in the end or Belle from Beauty and the beast, a book worm who married a prince after he turned back into a man in the end and Sleeping beauty where once again the princess fell in love with a prince.
for over 20 years, lgbtqi people were told it wasn't normal to be in love with someone of the same sex and now finally they're allowed to be in love and marry someone of the same sex. all they want is representation everywhere on streaming platforms and on TV. when that happens then the community will probably stop trying to make straight characters gay for their own pleasure or something

I thought the film maker was sued by the Holmes Estate for changing the character of Sherlock too much, and making him too affable.

Love the 1st installment, great fun to watch! Really bad costuming (as usual) for the time period! I don't know if the costume dept is stupid or they think the audience is!

Definitely watching this when it's out. Enjoyed the first one more than I expected. TBH I had no idea there were books till I saw it mentioned in regards to the first film. Hope the director's "grittier" ideas don't make the sequel too dark to watch. I really don't get the whole 'grimdark' and 'gritty' trend in the last decade. The world's 'grim' and 'gritty' enough; most folks're watching movies to escape it for a while, not see more of it. But that's just my opinion, each to their own prefs.
MBB loves the books this series is based on. I don’t know how the author treated WS’s original characters, but I hope as eager as the director is to make EH grittier, it’s a teen book. Building a personal relationship of any kind at this point is not part of the equation.
