- Few people expected Mike Hailwood to be successful at the Isle of Man TT when he made a return to racing after an eleven-year hiatus, but he proved them wrong in 1978 when he rode this Ducati to victory. Mike the Bike's 1978 F1 Ducati was on display at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, with Chris 'Stalker' Walker riding it up the Hill, "I never thought I'd get to ride something as iconic as this… I've been fortunate to ride at Goodwood Festival of Speed a few times and out of all the bikes I've ever ridden it's by far the biggest honour."

Just imagine what he could have done on the machines and tyres we have on the road, and that we couldn’t ride well enough to have stayed with him on this Ducati. What a legend Mike is.
I used to watch the guys working on it, downstairs at Sports Motorcycles in Manchester.
At the 1979 TT I was able to sit on his bike ( Ducati 78😊) in the paddock after the race ..
What a time ..
Can't wait for the movie!
Ducati eines der schönsten Motorräder der Welt und dann der herrliche Motorton❤
There was a young man called West, who wanted something better than the rest. So he bought a Ducati and rode away happy cos Italian bikes are the best %~))
And then it broke down.😢
I always thought Mike needed RH shift, that's why he ran an older 750SS at the Castrol 6 Hour race at Amaroo Park and not the later 900 with LH shift.
I think this guy is like my missus. Doesn't know left from right.
I attended the 1978 and 1979 TT meetings,in 1978 Hailwood first, John G Williams second, sadly, JGW, a very popular TT stalwart passed away a few months after the TT from cardiac arrest, JGW had a heart condition of which he and the medical practioners were unaware. 1979 was possibly more important for Hailwood, he blitzed the 500 Senior race riding an RG500, setting a lap record on lap 2, post race interview, "I wasn't even trying"
Once it's up to speed, it doesn't come down so easily. And there's no reason to.
right side gear lever not left

@@Alfu100 Hello Alf, I an still here, Nice to hear from you.
@@patrickslinn1223 Who was the red-headed mechanic at Sports Something Armstrong, sorry I forgot his first name, nice lad, it was him who persuaded me to buy a 750 Ducati in 1975, and I think he did the TT on a Moto Guzzi

Watched Mike at the Post TT from Devil's Elbow. Great days.
