      Haha - my mom uses silver in her handmade jewelry she sells, and does pretty well at it. I prefer the more neutral look of silver (or even the much more valuable platinum) to the yellow of gold, personally, which is also why she uses it. That, and people can afford to buy it without breaking their banks, but the price of precious metals has risen the last decade across the board.

    The mines of Laurion (or Lavrion) are ancient mines located in southern Attica between Thoricus and Cape Sounion, approximately 50 kilometers south of the center Athens, in Greece.
    The mines are best known for producing silver, but they were also a source of copper and lead.
    A number of remnants of these mines (shafts, galleries, surface workshops) are still present in the region.
    The mines were exploited in prehistoric times as a source of copper and galena, a lead ore.
    In the classical period, mining in the area resumed.
    The Athenians used large numbers of slaves to mine the area, with the silver produced contributing significantly to the city's wealth.
    Abandoned in the 1st century BC, the mines were reactivated in 1864 and mined for their lead by French and Greek companies until 1978.

    I think I learned in the second grade that the symbol $ means "1 Spanish piece of 8", it's a 1 through an S and if you look closely it sort of looks like an 8. The US dollar was based and designed on it, so that's why we use it as our currency symbol. You may have also seen it with two lines through the S; some people write that way, and those people are wrong. It's not an 11 or 2 Spanish pieces of 8, it's just 1.

    • @brookdyer6620
      @brookdyer6620 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dollar sign began when the Pony Express delivered currency in cloth sacks with the letters U. S. printed over top of each other on the bags. The bottom portion of the slightly larger longer U that extended towards the bottom of the sack would eventually wear off leaving the letters looking like $ (two lines through the S of course, not one).

    Most gold that has ever been mined is still in existence but silver gets used up in many processes that make our civilization possible. This actually should reverse the value of these two metals because silver is just plainly way more useful. Gold is pretty and has been treasured since men figured out that shiny stuff attracted women. But women don't choose things by their value but mostly by appearance. After all they have been sold on the idea that lumps of squished carbon are their best friends.

    19:00 not entirely accurate that the british government came up with the idea to sell opium. it was actually a private company that came up with that idea and sold opium in china.

    Silver is used in many advanced technologies. If the price of silver was actually represented, the world economy would crash.

    I always thought the dollar sign with two strokes through the "S" meant Dollars U S for United States. The bottom part of the U was left off over time and eventually one stroke became the norm. Looking at the symbol on the Spanish Peso I find his explanation far fetched. Makes one wonder if the rest of the doco is totally legit. The best lies contain an element of truth.
