Much of Victorian Era dining customs and tableware came about due to a marketing ploy. The Comestock Lode in Nevada produced so much silver that the mining industry had to produce new reasons for using it. So we ended up with a different eating utensil for each type of food that would be served as a formal meal.

Kicking out its Huguenot population stripped France of most of its artisanal expertise and France never really recovered its status as the producer of the most fashionable luxury goods.

The french were really a spiteful people, imagine killing off highly skilled artisans just cause they have a different religion to you

You think things are so different today because you view the past through 21st century eyes. Today most people earn a living wage, but the top dogs, CEO's, etc., earn million Dollar/Pound salaries. The common working man will never own one of those luxury yachts you see in pictures.

Any master craftsman worth his salt is hoping for the opportunity of someone willing to exploit his talents.
