My understanding is the OAD pulley is usually the culprit and not the alternator itself. Changing the pulley does require a special puller though and still requires pulling the alternator. I also found it easier to remove and reinstall the alternator from above on my 2012. I attempted the removal from below and just could not get enough clearance to pull the alternator out. An E7 Torx bit works perfectly to remove the corresponding bolts.
You have the best video on this subject of any other videos I watched. We have been doing it this way for a few years and it works so much easier than going in from the top. You don't lose any coolant doing it this way and it takes less time to do it this way. My 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan has 252,000 miles on it and we just finished putting the 5th alternator in it this afternoon. The idiot engineer who thought it was a good idea to put the alternator in this position needs a kick in the pants. They must have been the same dip stick who designed the battery terminals.
Well I am appreciate your positive feedback! I worried that I might have done this the hardest way possible, but I think it is better than removing the upper radiator hose. Maybe a little more work, but less mess and no coolant system to bleed. Thank you for watching and keep that Caravan going!
I just did the alternator on mine. If you have another person you can actually get under there with out taking the tire off. Stick your wrench in the tensioner pully.... and have your buddy slip the belt off the alternator. Then, pull the bolts from the alternator (from the top) and pull it right out the top. Don't even mess with the ac compressor.
@@donnieyates9688 I just actually had to do an alternator on my wife’s journey, pretty much the same as the minivan. I was able to remove the upper radiator hose this time and sneak the alternator out. Very tight, but it worked.
My Alternator from Advanced Auto is only putting out 13.5 volts. I hope it goes up to 14 soon. I hate to be replacing another of these. Mine had a lifetime warranty, so I supposedly got my new on for free. We'll see when I take the old one back tomorrow. They cost $405.00 now.
13.5 should still be well within specs for providing a good charge. It might be that it's giving issues when under a heavy load? Hope you were able to get it figured out!
When I tried my torque sockets, they would not fit as snuggly as using SAE standard sockets. I didn’t want to strip the head of that bolt for the life of me. Lol.
You can do it from the top if you remove the fans and the top radiator hose. No matter how you approach it, the idiot engineers have made it a bitch to replace. They should have to do it five times and video it before the car is put on the market. I bet they would rework some things then.
@@jasonwood5988 it wasn’t the radiator fan that gave me trouble, it was the upper radiator hose that we got in the way. I tried taking out of the top when I did my wife’s journey, and I found it to be more difficult than going out of the bottom. I guess however you can get it done works! Thanks for watching
I appreciate the introductory words that explain what are the symptoms. Not all videos out there do that
Great video! Helped me a lot. Doing it all myself no XP with vehicles. 23 year old flooring installer haha
@@danielotis2075 glad I could help! Let me know how it turns out. 👍🏼
Turned out great! Putting the new belt on was a 20 minute struggle but back together in one piece haha! Thank you!!
@@danielotis2075 yeah the fight with a serpentine belt can be a rough one! But, I'm glad it went well for you and the job is complete. Good Job!

What a beautiful vehicle!
Did you consider using two nuts on the stud back to back to break the stud loose?
I honestly always forget that trick and I'm not sure if I had nuts that fit. But that is a great trick for removing a stud! Thanks for watching!
any info on a dodge dynasty 1992? I cannot get the bracket off that's covering the alternator.

You can't just pull it up can you gotta take the fan off to do that right

doing it from top so much easyer, took me 30 mins to remove and replace and not even get dirty no lie.
Did you have to move the upper radiator hose?
@@copenhagenblue8417 just the upper on one the right side of radiator and move it over and didn’t lose no coolant.

The 7/32 is the the wrong size. It is a E7 torx socket

I’m trying to find one for a 2000 cystler town n country we can’t get it out 😢
You’ve been trying to find one? Or you’ve been trying to get one out?
what a vehicle in the heaven.
not a 7/32nds its a E7 which is an inverted torx.
I'll have to try that next time. I swear I tried a e& but maybe there was just junk in the head of the bolt. Thanks for watching!
