    The one thing I find myself the most disappointed with overall from this Spelljammer set is the overall lack of new equipment in general. They just introduced a race that has proficiency with firearms and the only firearm stats are buried in the DMG.

      @@ashelred monster weapons are not transferable to players unless they are standard weapons. Even if you have the same strength as a giant you can't weird his weapon and do the same damage. Of course your DM is absolutely free to rule otherwise. It would seem reasonable that a giff is a giff and a dropped giff weapon is a gift.

    Air Bubble would be fine as an Arcane option for Artificers, Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks and Wizards. I would have liked to see Druids and Rangers get a spell to conjure a Gadabout and perhaps give the Cleric and Paladin an Astral Form spell that turns a player luminous so they do not need to breathe in space.

  • @scetchmonkey007
    @scetchmonkey007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Yeah I was not expecting much in the way of spelljammer rules in 5E I have been reading the AD&D stuff and lore for my next game and wondering the best way to approach it. In Old AD&D the spelljamming helm spells only made a temporary helm it was no substitute for a real one that could only be created by the Arcane, spelljamming helms also absorbed all the casters spell slots and used that to fuel the ship. A caster had no magic while flying the helm.
    So Some good and some bad there. Lore-wise the idea of Spell jamming helms being under the preview of a weird race of spell jamming merchants the arcane, made all ships rare. With this 5E rules, any 9th level wizard with enough cash and backing (say a kingdom) could mass produce spell jamming helms and have apprentice level casters pilot all the ships.
    The good you dont want your players being unable to cast spells because they are piloting ships it really hurts space travel for those classes. I might do a trade off. As in you cant cast spells while attuned to the helm and maybe each time you attune you lose your highest level spell slot. So a player can leave the helm and still be a PC. but going back and forth from ship to adventuring will drain the caster.

    This book is kind of a let down :(
    I love magic items, and only have a few, very niche ones? Big dissapointment.
    But, it gives me lots of room to homebrew new stuff for Martial characters
    Meteorite Longbow, allows you to spend a charge to turn an attack into an AoE
    Magnetic Boots, works like slippers of spider climbing but for metal, and let's you anchor yourself in place to resist being pushed around
    Gravity Hammer, spend a charge to replace 1 attack with a Push/Pull
    Antimatter Crossbow, doesn't need ammo and deals necrotic damage

    04:00 There is a technical reason (based on the lore of previous D&D editions) for Divine_based spellcasters & bards to not "get" this spell:
    . The "astral sea" (& the astral plane in general) are accesible to divinities of all kinds.
    . Spelljamer "ships" can navigate on the astral sea... but also other weirder places.
    . The "phlogiston space" that separate the different WORLDS of the (inifinite) Material Plane is completely "opaque" to divine influence [this is by design, as it separates/incomunicate the deities of different pantheons from each other].
    . Clerics simply can not recover spellslots (or use ~most~ of the divine_given features of their class) while they are "between worlds", yet still inside the Material Plane.
    . Bards use their magical abilities by "tapping" into the Essence of Magic THROUGH the Weave (rather than by manipulating it directly), by coercing the pseudo_divine "collective conciousness" generated by all mortals [both living or "dead", for the case of druids or "nature spirits" who choose for their souls to still reside in a particular World of the Material Plane]; as this is how they access "Secret Lore" and "Magical Secrets" [that is tied specifically to the "canon" history of that particular World].
    Unlike Warlocks (who usually get magical abiltiies through Persuasion/Diplomacy), Bards get their magic by "force" (Intimidation), taking what they when they need it from the local planetary/stellar "Hive Mind".
    -> While technically speaking they COULD use the "conglomerate of subconciousness" of the few mortals inside the "bubble" of a Spelljammer ship (and of those close enough to others thay they can see them); in practical terms this is only enough for Level_0 cantrip spells [otherwise they would be also put into use to PROPEL the ships via spellslots].
    Because Spelljammer ships can be used to explore/travel through the phlogiston, it would be a bad idea to "provide" this spells to those who could not use it there (primarily for players, as they may not be aware of all of this, but it could also apply in_multiverse to the characters, if they end up there unexpectedly or against their will).

    Isn't a Breathing Bubble already a Common Magic Item.

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is "common" because (almost) EVERYBODY needs it at some point.
      Having an "unlimited" demand for this items (whole multiverse), means wizards & artificiers may give them priority (when creating magic items) over other posible options (investing aditional time & resources on making more of them than what they actually need), since there is someone "out there" that will buy the extras.
      -> The level of the spell used to create a magic item & its effective price are not necesarily linked.
      In this case a lvl 2 spell is required to make something that opens many posibilities (or is even required to make practical) any submarine or astral_sea adventure [ but there is a big "second hand" market for old, used variations of the item, so actual offer may be abundant in certain places, lowering the selling price].

The page count is obviously the culprit (Hasbro decided to increase the number of D&D releases per year and now it is showing), in addition to making it superunbalanced for the players. DMs need more concrete rules for ship combat, for example. I will have to mix these sourcebooks with other 5E fanmade adaptations of Spelljammer as well as the original AD&D boxed sets (full of lore missing here as well as other goodies).

      Then, the "second head" is treated just like if it was another arm (any holes of tiny size like the nose, ears mouth (when closed) get "sealed" with the magical equivalent of a plasma window.
      -> This was probably ment for the uretra/vulva & anus, but there is no reason it would not work for any other "holes", like an open wound or scar [that may reopen on vaccum unlike healthy skin].

    These are all huge disappointments. There are magic items that do Air Bubble better without wasting a spell slot and spell known, including one in this book. Spells like Create Spelljamming Helm shouldn't even be spells they should be a more interactive form of magic that requires a complicated ritual. Why is the fish suit very rare, it's a purely utilitarian magic item that most dms will probably give to their whole party so that the campaign can be allowed to happen? You shouldn't have to be a spellcaster in order to attune to a spelljamming helm, that's dumb it's just a chair that controls a ship. The Wildspace Orrery is fine I guess but it's just a space gps. Why does the Talarith even exist, it's just an extension of the monster's statblock.

      To be fair, almost anyone is a spellcaster by this point.

    Okay, guys, the negativity is making me a little sick. They gave us six new races, 16 new ships, rules for Spelljamming, and a whole bunch of monsters INCLUDING 5 new beasts ALL of which Druids can Wild Shape into at some point! I've been hearing complaints from many Druid players that they haven't been getting many new Wild Shape options. Add all of that to the two Backgrounds, the two Spells, the three Magic Items, and the adventure and it's STILL not enough? I'm sorry; I don't wanna sound rude, but how exactly am I NOT supposed to interpret that as being greedy and/or ungrateful?!

      Because Wizards of the Coast is not Santa Claus, they’re a business putting out a product intended to be purchased by consumers, and those consumers pay for those products so they’re entitled to voice and discuss their opinions even when those opinions are negative. I bought the box set, I’m happy with the monsters and the new ship statblocks and the race concepts (race *balance* is another matter entirely) but there’s no denying that this product feels very sparse given the price tag. The DM screen is nice but it’s not absolutely necessary and the adventure is just eating 64 pages that could have been dedicated to additional spells/items/ships or even to things like, idk, info on how to actually create Wildspace Systems or actual ship-to-ship combat, which is the thing everyone was actually wanting out of this. Don’t get me wrong, I understand people can act entitled for no reason on the internet, but in my case, I payed $70 for this set and that does entitle me to provide feedback on the product in whatever way I see fit, and that doesn’t make me ungrateful, it makes me a customer with a complaint, and judging by the general community consensus from what I’m seeing it’s a legitimate one. If customers weren’t allowed to complain then there would be no way to let it be known to the company they’re doing something that’s going to lose them business in the future which hopefully motivates them to fix the issue going forward. Calling any form of criticism “negativity” encourages the opposite, it urges people just to consoom product without any critical thinking and gives WotC the incentive to become MORE lazy and anti-customer because they know that people will continue to buy higher priced products at lower quality no matter what they do. Let people speak their mind, it doesn’t hurt you and it keeps Wizards accountable for putting out sloppy work.

      @@bookwyrmbaneoftheplothole8500 You're missing my point; you're talking to a guy who seriously doesn't get what the fuss is about. The Astral Guide has rules for Ship-to-ship combat AND how to make a Wildspace System. It literally says to use the two Systems in the Adventure as models, and I don't see how it could be simpler; they're Solar Systems, basically. They have a Sun in the middle that is orbited by planets, some or all which may be orbited by moons. As for Spells and Items; well, sorry, can't help you on that one. Still, keep in mind that their is some world building between the Rock of Bral and the two Wildspace Systems in Light of Xaryxis. If you want more, you can use Tasha's and the setting books; the original Spelljammer had inter-system travel, and Tasha's has some stuff that works with it as well. Again, I don't see what the fuss is about; it seems like a "mountain out of a molehill" scenario to me. Believe me; I've been in those myself.

      Look up the 2nd edition spelljammer books, read them over and despair how lackluster these books are. These are just 70 dollars for a 0 effort reprint of a 30 year old book with all the soul sucked out. Same thing happened with fizbans and the draconinicon. Just reprints with very little innovation while gutting all the good stuff at a 70 dollar price (tripple the price of most novels with 1000+ pages).
