Evolve is a cooperative/competitive shooter video game, developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by 2K Games. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 10, 2015.
Evolve is set on Shear, a distant planet located in the "Far Arm" of space, that humanity has traveled to in the distant future. The established colonies, considered the most valuable in this region of space, are soon attacked by malevolent alien Monsters. As the Monsters destroy the colonies on Shear, a former planet tamer named William Cabot is brought out of retirement to deal with the threat, in order to evacuate the remaining colonists from Shear. In response, Cabot assembles a team of Hunters-consisting of war veterans, psychopaths, professionals, and expendables-to eliminate the Monsters, setting the main conflict of Evolve.
Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer game, pitting four player-controlled Hunters against one alien Monster, controlled by a fifth player. The Hunters are tasked with killing the Monster; while the Monster must either kill all four Hunters, or complete a secondary objective such as destroying a human base or power plant. The game will feature a variety of maps, one of which being a large jungle, with some industrial elements where players can take shelter.
Both Hunters and Monsters can use unique abilities during the game. The Monster player can kill other smaller creatures to evolve and become stronger by entering a cocoon stage, leaving itself vulnerable for a short duration. There are various power-ups that both Hunters and Monsters can obtain by killing the local wildlife. The wildlife can also attack and slow down either side.
The Hunters' team is always made up of one player from each of four classes: a trapper, a support, a medic, and an assault class. Each class will contain a variety of different Hunters with different abilities and play-styles. The Monster player will also be able to choose from a variety of monsters; so far, only four of these monsters have been revealed, including "Goliath", "Kraken", "Wraith" and "Behemoth". - เกม

Back in my day, Turtle Rock gave out all their shit for free.
Now you have to pay full price just to unlock the ending of a game you already bought at full price.

Was exited for this game but I got turned off real quick when the developers seemed to be advertising the DLC more than the actual game, seems I was right in predicting their intentions. DLC has officially gotten completely out of control.
Remember when all the good stuff in multiplayer games could be used from the beginning and skins were the things that had to be unlocked instead of buying?

They changed pretty much everything that sucked in the original and people who originally bought the game have all their characters and stuff already unlocked. The only thing that they have to start from scratch is the perk system.
+Zelousmarineinspace This is just my personal opinion. I find the game damn boring. Walk around the map with 3 other retards until you find the bullet sponge monster and keep shooting his ass. The weapons feel boring and look boring. All you do with the monster is flail around and hit the hunters.
I never felt screwd over after the F2P update, but dissappointment for listening the retards who demanded the game going F2P as if it would've fixed the issue in bugs and balance. F2P people are all casual and this game was never meant to be for those.

@@kiralkot Funny how a xynta thinks he knows what the situation was, I was there observing and reading from the beginning and played to the last days of F2P and Legacy, and not once was it developers fault to create and put the price tag into microtransactions. Blame where the blame belongs to, 2K ( publisher) if that ever annoyed you. I am more than enough to elaborating you on why also same the players whom abandoned the game twice and the publisher are at fault. Devs only tried and failed to do their job.

Good review. I've been hearing a lot about this game lately (mostly in the form of ranting about the expensive DLC), but it doesn't seem like there's much of a fully fleshed out (let alone balanced) game to be had here. Visually it looks nice, but gameplay-wise it looks like it will get repetitive quickly. Shame they had to have all that DLC separate on day one, it's definitely an insult-to-injury sort of thing like you mentioned. It probably would have been a more fleshed out/complete package had they just included it with the game to begin with, and that probably would have helped the game a lot more than it would have hurt it.

This game has it in spades, but not much else. Been saying it since I played the alpha, it'll go the way of titanfall. Not a bad game, but you wind up quitting because the concept is more interesting than the actual game is.

Titanfall 2 is good, but it's not a hit. Didn't sell well at all because EA can't time their releases for shit.
Evolve is permanently dead now.
Based on all of the positive reviews from big names and fans alike, I consider it a hit. It also put up a big fight with it's giant competetors like Infinite Warfare.
Sure Evolve is going down hill at the moment, but if 2k didn't release it as f2p, I'm pretty sure it would've been completely gone by now.
Just saying, no reason to deny one's opinion.

I had no expectations when I played this game (downloaded it for free on Xbox Live). It came with all the DLC and I really enjoyed it. Community was in the throes of giving up on it, but still had a lot of fun for 3 months. I can see why people who had any kind of expectation were disappointed though

I remember the times where it would be considered cheap and dirty to try and sell skins as DLC they should be free, they're just pixels and most people could design them selves if given the right tools. Thanks to Free to play games DLC is now considered acceptable by everyone and AAA games don't even hold back on what they put up for sale. Remember the days where DLC was produced after the game was released? When a game was so well received that the fans requested the developers for more content. Fallout 3 comes to mind but either way the gaming industry is getting more greedy day by day we got too many mouth breathing inbreds spending their mums hard earned cash on the shit.
I feel that the only game that does DLC in a Free to play environment well is TF2. Considering that just with some patience you can just randomly find weapons in a match and that the stock items you start with are actually worth a damn.

There are many OP items/weapons in the game meaning chance can turn you into an OP player which takes more away from the PvP in that game. Why should someone with luck have a massive advantage against those who don't? I would say the vanilla weapons are worth a damn but they don't stack up against the massive amounts of tweaked weapons/items floating around TF2. The game was better in the orange box where skill came before all else.
Elliott Mckenzie There is always a way to combat against a weapon set in TF2. It just takes skill and some teamwork.
MultiCool55 I believe in equality in PvP, I don't think learning how to combat every weapon set is fair especially considering how hard it is to get said set.
I remember this game flopped because all that ridiculous dlc. The game went free to play on PC but that did not stop the servers from being dead...I also still find used copies of this game in bargain bins at Gamestop for like $2 lmao

I've heard people call this "Titanfall 2.0" in the sense that it seems like the community and general buzz about this game will drop off after a few months. As much as I like the game (played the beta), I could see this becoming a ghost town unless something seriously good happens.

It's amazing how excited I was when they announced this game. Such a shame to see it have a store that would only be justifiable on a F2P game... Great review!
I know this game might not have lived up to expectations, but it does give me a taste of what they could do with a Predator game. Think Predator vs Arnold and team in a massive jungle map. That would be pretty awesome I think, as long as they don't make the same mistakes this game made.

As you say, it's a solid and polished game with fun mechanics. But it gets stale after a few rounds since it always plays out the same way.
I also noticed that when I played the technical test Beta on Ps4. It was fun with friends, because that involved a lot more co-operation, call outs and tactics than when you play with randoms in matchmaking.
It kind of feel more like a party game, where you play it once in a while with friends just to have some quick fun and not like a game where you spend hours and hours in.
And because of that it's kind of overpriced since it doesn't live to long hour-wise.
Sidenote, meeting someone playing the Kraken is so boring.
One game I was in, in the Beta, the Kraken just flew around the entire time making it impossible to track him since he left to tracks.
I had also put out sound spikes to detect him but he avoided them too.
Kraken is OP, the match pretty much just ended with us standing still looking at each other because we didn't feel like running around the map for forever.

When companies dont use the fps genre or only advertise graphics but gameplay or actually take risks with new ip or lastly a gaming crash

Wolfenstein: The New Order was really good, but yeah, the FPS genre has really been lacking in recent years.

To me the shooting overtakes everything. I completely agree to the blandness. Left 4 Dead had greater tension and pacing but this game is literally an arena shooter with some weird gimmicks.
Also the shooting just sucks. I don't feel umph or power behind anything. Nothing feels lethal or weighty. Playing as the monster is a clunky mess.
But my expectations was some sort of Monster Hunting simulator, so I guess its my fault for thinking Evolve was anything like that. Ggg said the price isn't worth an online grind fest and that there are glimpses of good hunting but those mechanics ultimately peter out.
If they has made matches last longer than 15-25 minutes, tense hunting and careful tactics could have played a really big role but I regret buying this game.
This games saving grace(online-coop) in a few years just like any other online meaty game will be obsolete. You'll be left with just a solo mode with nothing else to do.
These games are not worth it in the long run.

Nice review I agree with everything except the overpowered part of the monster for starters once they get into form 3 they move much slower and provide a bigger target as for the hunters they can be quite overpowered as well for example maggie can only have 5 traps and they take a couple of seconds to activate however she can keep putting them down the same goes for bucket with his sentries, abe can keep spamming them stasis grenades, Lazarus can resurrect hunters and do to his ability to cloak you can't evil see him I hate caira as well her healing grenades restore so much health and she can use them on herself, and hanks shield is a pain it prevents damage to his allies the moster is perhaps the most unfair class you either love it or hate it this depends on whether or not all the hunters are skilled in there classes.

From the first time I saw this game to now, my opinion hasn't changed that it's an infinitely shallow and inferior version of superb WarCraft III custom maps like Werewolf Transylvania, Metastasis, Parasite, Farmer's Revolt etc.
This title feels like a mode\mod of a bigger game O_o

+Gggmanlives Except that the gameplay and level design changes make Evolve stage 2 pretty superior to the older version of evolve.
From the simplest things like all hunters can throw up the dome, the redesigned maps, hud, and perk system, to the in-game currency that enables you to get everything for free, and a swarm of new characters making your play style much different and not entirely focused on one monster.
I mean you don't have to review this again, but Evolve stage 2 isn't the same game.

Knew this game's lack of content and variety was going to be a problem once I heard who was making it and what kind of game it was going to be (Left 4 Dead).
See, a concept like this game's seems like it'd be more suited for a mod or gametype for another game like Natural Selection 2. Hell, if you were to describe this game to me if I had no prior knowledge of it I'd think it sounds like a NS2 mod. As a standalone game, however, I feel like it would get very boring quickly and certainly isn't worth the full price of admission as you said. Also a certain musician I'm fond of composed for this game but it's a shame I'm not into the game itself. :p
This reminds me of the Zombie Giant mode in Counter Strike Nexon: Zombies, but WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.
Maybe if they used said pages of crappy skin DLC, and had them as actual rewards in the game, people might of thought they were achieving more

This game is amazing but after looking into the development cycle of Evolve it seems like 2k just forced them to release it early and 2k Also forced them to put in all the microtransaction bullshit. It's surprisingly well balanced now after all the patches, and considering the giant array of characters to choose from
Seems way too fast paced for my taste. The trailers hinted at a much more suspenseful atmosphere. Instead it seems to be just completely pumped up chaos. I think that I personally would have set the game in the past with older weapons like bolt action rifles.

The monster evolution reminds me of how the aliens could grow stronger during matches in the Half-Life mod Natural Selection. The 1-vs-many scenario type reminds me of the Half-Life 2 mod The Hunted. I'm just not feeling that much innovation here.

Good review. And I agree...this game is way to expensive for what you get. It has a cool idea but it's getting so repeditiv. They really should have just make a mod out of this concept. Maybe not with high end graphics but for free... But this? No thanks.
I've played this game for over 150 hours, I absolutely love it. In it's early stages the game does seem repetitive, but when you become properly accustomed to it after many matches, all of the subtleties and nuances are shown and the strategy for both sides can be explored.
I have never payed for a micro-transaction skin though. That was complete bullshit and the game cannot justify that, no matter what.

Nice review but it felt a bit rushed. You didn't really get into much detail to explain as how exactly are some monsters unballanced and you didn't talk about other game modes. I'm guessing you pushed this early for views since the game has just been released.

There is no correlation with the price and "kids not buying it" as you said. If that were true, Call of Duty should have a good community like Evolve's.
I do not think $59.99 price tags ever stopped the gamer moms from buying their kids these games.
With that said, Evolve is extremely mundane. You are basically doing the same thing in nearly every mode the game has to offer. The game's $59.99 price tag is not justifiable with the lack of content, and boring game design.

I never bothered with the alpha, but it seems like this game has no business being triple-A. The concept and amount of content (barring the DLC-fest) seem better suited to a 20-30 man Early Access/Kickstarter sort of job.

5:28-5:54 Me personally, I think Evolve being expensive and team-oriented (and maybe also requiring higher specs for computers) is what makes that community decent and I kinda support that. Just my theory of why they have a decent community, something most online video games lack nowadays.

Is there a single player campaign in the game? Games without single player campaigns rely only on an active community so it could technically be useless in the matter of a few years. Or become more and more difficult to be competitive unless you play on a regular basis. Esp with twitch where people have careers playing games.
Singleplayer is just multiplayer mode with bots.

firstly, when you said evolve is using the crysis 3 engine: that's incorrect - crysis 3 uses cryengine 3 while evolve uses cryengine 4 (or simply 'cryengine' as it bears no resemblance to the previous cryengine versions).

i dont really agree with alot of this review. ive been in good teams a lvl 3 monster can get killed easily.. but if one of the hunters fail it can get chaotic. but i feel this game is balanced well. players just need to get good

Kinda sad the game died. Stage 2 was interesting and wanted to see what else they could have brought have to the table, but still a pretty decent game to play with friends

I was bamboozled by this game when it first released. I played the beta, and my teammates seemed involved and worked together. Right after official release, every game I played had 0 communication, and the other players just did their own thing, fucking up the game completely. I've of the reasons I avoid multiplayer only games now.
£35 for half a game with boring gameplay and pounds worth of DLC which most should of been in the game in the first place...hmm, have we got idiots written on our heads?

If you want 25% of the game buy it for $60, if you want 50% of the game buy for $60 + $25 including half of all DLC. If you want the full game pay another $140 by purchasing every missing DLC separately. If you have thrown away enough of your money for this bullshit then you earn a medal for easiest-cash-cow in existence. Boycot this bullshit.
