It is considered scary because it almost never repeats itself with any consistency, and this creates an unpredictable feeling. It is also considered scary because of the random stalker-ish parts like the one between 0:18-0:25, which make you feel like someone is lurking behind you without actually being visible.
this is the last dungeon my father beat before he passed away. I still have the saved file on my nintendo 64 with the 3 stones, and light and forest medallions. I watched my dad go through this dungeon while listening to this tune
@@KingOfDiamonds64 he would not hahahaha.I remember saying the forest temple was too easy. He would have loved the challenge in the water temple, especially in figuring out a way to beat dark link
Did You Know?: The flute and vocals (the "hua"! sound) of this song are both part of the same sound sample, and they are a reversed/inverted and slightly slowed version of a set of sound samples from sound libraries named "Ethnic Volume 1" (samples named "African 29-6" through "African 29-9" and "Ethnic Flavors" (sample called "African Flute 05") by the group Zero-G.
I love how, along with the obvious forest theming in this temple (duh), there's this underlying theme of death that makes it slightly more haunting. The main enemies throughout the temple are Poes, literal ghosts haunting the halls, manifesting in paintings and contorting the scenery around you. The main boss is a phantom, nightmare-ish manifestation of Ganondorf. Even some of the lesser enemies that appear still fit with this hidden death/ghost motif. Namely the Stalfos that appear halfway through when you're supposed to retrieve the Fairy Bow, which becomes even more interesting when you remember the Kokiri girl mentioning how anyone trapped in the forest for too long is doomed to become a Stalfos. I might be over thinking the hell out of this, but it's really intriguing in my opinion,. It just adds this whole other layer to the dungeon. Also, I can't have this song play normally in my head without it being interrupted by the fucking Wolfos howling and trying to rip me to shreds.
The more I get into D&D and contemplating the Feywild, the more I come to understand that in Link's past we were totally exposed to the fairylike and bright side of the fey. The Deku Tree, the Kokiri children, Navi, and even the seemingly playful nature of the lost woods to a certain extent. But when you come back as Adult Link, you come to see the other side of the Fey, the forest spirits, and the absolutely haunting nature of all of it now that the Great Deku is no longer around to protect his children. You learn the Skull Kid only got that way because he was at one point a perfectly normal human child who lost his way in the woods and would never come out. The one skin and bones guy from Kakariko - as you're told - either did or would have become a Staflo if he stayed any longer, and the Kokiri girl straight up says in laughing manner "Will you become one **too**?" Gameplay wise, OoT unfortunately does not age well, especially in combat. But the environmental storytelling told in it is brilliant at times. Though Hyrule Field is an area that was desperately lacking in practically everything.
What I love about this track is that it gives you this feeling that you are somewhere you're not supposed to be, but at the same time, you get that exhilarating feeling of adventure, like you need to know what lies ahead, no matter how dangerous. You're an adult now, you have the Master Sword, it's time to see if you really are the Hero of Time or not. This was the proving ground for real heroes.
Sleep paralysis? When ever that happens I call on the name of the Prince of Peace, The Lamb upon the Throne. I call on Jesus, even if I can just whisper his name. The sleep paralysis simply goes away. It's not a coincidence that you would compare this music to that condition and that I read it and I also happen to absolutely love Ocarina of Time.
Natalie Hagler I remember when I used to get them like every few nights they all became scarier as the demon became more like a demonic version of my self and getting closer and closer and actually feeling like it was trying to take over my body
I grew up constantly hearing about how OoT was the best game ever blah blah blah. I became jaded to it and felt the whole thing was overrated. Then last summer I was messing around in an OoT randomizer for fun and heard the Lon Lon Ranch theme from start to finish for the first time in over a decade. And right there in that moment, searching for gold skulltulas and collecting item drops, the strings came in as I was running around by the horses and I felt that maybe, maybe I had been wrong about this game. For a few seconds that world seemed real, Malone seemed real and I empathized with her. I even got a little teary eyed. It was a beautiful moment.
For all you music theory nerds; This song is in both E phrygian dominant and E mixolydian AT THE SAME TIME. When the flute comes in, there is this strange clash between the minor 2nd and the major 2nd which gives it an "off" feeling (which compliments the dungeon perfectly). I also suspect that the flute part is referencing the Kokiri Forrest as it outlines the same chord progression. This is just masterful writing. Fucking Koji Kondo-- I love this guy! 😁
There's no other feeling like stepping foot into the Forest Temple for the first time. The unease that this song creates within the player is both beautiful and scary. It simply means that this is a masterfully crafted soundtrack.

@@milkshakedude3772 Could be more than that. Remember the backyards with the Water Wells? From the looks of it. The Forest Temple could have been some sort of Fortress, a Last Bastille Resistance agaisnt the evil spirits and monsters of the Lost Woods.
Same ! For a long time I didn't get what I was supposed to do to progress, so I searched again and again. I kept hearing this music hours after turning off the game.
I've seen a lot of people, almost everyone, say that this theme creeps them out or unsettles them. Which to me was always weird because I never saw this song as creepy or anything the like. It seems that I'm in the minority with this, however this song to me has some sort of calming energy to it. It's soothing and ethereal and I will admit this has been my sleep music from time to time along with the theme of the Great Deku Tree. This song is another reason to why the Forest Temple is one of my favorite dungeons in the Zelda franchise.
i suppose it’s akin to getting lost in wonderland but it’s the eerie soothingness that gets me paired with the memories of those creepy hands from above that make me feel like a wallmaster is creeping from above me
I mean the forest temple is literally haunted by Poe ghosts and the boss is a phantom ganondorf on a ghostly steed that charges at you from inside a painting and emerges from it to leap and strike at you. and the falling ceiling, the twisting pathways, the wall masters.. I’m pretty confident it’s meant to be creepy
As a kid, probably my favorite part in the entire game (and in video games in general) was to finally get to this temple, hear this song, and get awestruck by the realization that shit has just gotten real. It's such an amazing first dungeon for adult link; it sets the tone perfectly to ease the player into the more serious and gritty part of the journey that follows.
been playing this game since i was 4. 17 now and i just got here. and i will say the music really took my attention away from what was going on and i got frustrated. especially with the part where you enter the room by the windy hall way and there’s 3 of those skeleton dudes. i died atleast 4 times then but i managed to beat them. i just want to feel the accomplishment of finishing this game cuz i couldn’t when i was younger
I really don't understand what's scary. This song, to me, is like an embodiment of this game's mystery and finding new things to find, thinking you were the first.
For me it was the whole idea that the game lead you to believe anyone lost in the woods was doomed to become one of the monsters that inhabit it so the repeating, echoing sound effect of Link exerting himself made me feel like the Temple itself was telling me "Many like you have tried and every single one has failed. So will you. You're going to die."
As a child, I never played any zelda games as my parents didnt like the idea of video game consoles although my bigger brotger had a ps1 and then ps2. Now being 20 im playing ocarina of time for the first time, ans fair enaugh I find this song weirdly calming, it brings back early 2000s memories I dont know how and I feel like a small kid again, I cant understand how other people feel unconfortable with this song, I love it (and I love oot, for what I've been playing)
@@BurnerShiro My first zelda was actually Twilight princess, and I started yet stopped playing majoras mask earlier this year because I started devoting time to Final Fantasy 7, which I played for the first time this year also.
There was a theory I heard from a fried that said that the background song of the forest temple was Link screaming. I can sort of hear it beginning at 1:13 . I tried looking it up but unfortunately I haven't been able to find any information on it. I would love to know what others think about it and if they could help me. It definitely adds a layer of creepiness to this song.
That could be true. If you’ve ever played Majoras mask, At one point a mask of a Zora basically possessed him and it sounds like the scream from that scene. Well played... well played.
Your average Weeb no problem.you could just look up Forest Temple Sample. Also if you are in to theory’s, you should look into the fire temple theme.👍 glad I could help
I replayed ocarina of time twilight princess and wind waker something about these old dungeons that are unrivaled the soundtrack will always bring me back
Truly my favorite temple. The atmosphere was something else when I first played it as a kid. The haunting mysterious music playing as you explored a weird building that felt like an abandoned mansion from centuries ago. The twisting hallways, haunted portaits, a checkered ceiling trying to crush you...it was a surreal experience. The painting itself where phantom ganon emerges during your battle with him is still housing itself in my mind with how creepy it was.
The hero of time is the bravest Link. Imagine, having to skip time, not knowing if your friends are alive, encountering horrible monsters, enemies, and eerie ambiences throughout your travels. All because some tree and a Princess you barely know said it was your destiny.
@@Lemuelz why does such a perception trouble you so much? Perhaps such poetry is too disheartening or maybe that innocence brings greater wisdom as it comes with age? It is the balance in all things. Isn't excitement merely just fear and happiness groomed into 1 as a form of anticipation to thus explore the unknown. I guess what they call it is merely nostalgia. Certainly that cannot be a crime nor any offense from what I last recall. Are you sure that 'you' are ok? It seems invasive from your side it would seem.

Somehow, this song really brings me back to my childhood, when both my parents had jobs and couldn't take care of me. They always had to lend me to someone who also had kids. I was a very lonesome child, so I would spend most of my time exploring the houses to which I was sent. I remember this one house which the rooms inside were very dark and yet, from there I had a view to this very dense garden at the back of the house with a stone way and a grassy wall almost forming a maze. It felt so desolate and mysterious, and yet something about that was very comforting. When I listen to this song, it captures that same feeling.
The song always reminded me of when I was a kid and I used to go exploring forests near my house when I lived in Canada. And the Gerudo Valley theme reminds me of whenever I cross the border to Mexico as an adult haha. Man even in my adventurous years this game left me with memories I can apply to my daily life
I keep coming back once a year to give the whole Zelda OOT Soundtrack playlist a listen and gotta say forest temple and spirit temple have that unique and mystic aura in them. All time favourite temple. When I first got there being 10 years old that temple had a maaad impact on how intense the gameplay was....just noticed I still am in love with the forest temple... oh man.
I love how unique this piece of music is. Still many years after I find it slightly creepy but mostly beautiful. The way it folds into the (flute?) and gets back to the (other thing??) so smoothly wonderfully. It always feels like something else, a place or person, has been put forth to me, and I don’t know why. The forest temple itself is different from all the other temples too. The temple feels mostly abandoned, like when you’re at a church or something and no ones around but you’ve been looking from where you come from for over 20 minutes. All the other temples are outspread, and normal, not really carrying the same charm as the others, music and all. The forest temple has always been my favorite for this. If you took the time to read this entire thing I am sorry for your loss of time, unless you agree with me. If you don’t mind, I would like how you view the forest temple or some of the others. I won’t get mad at your opinion, but *some* other people might, so just keep that in mind.
i was never too creeped out by this temple, but i’ve always thought this was the best theme in ocarina. it’s beautiful but unsettling. i always loved the colors of the temple, and it looks like a weird haunted fun house, but with lots of foliage. i loved the poe sisters designs, i wish we got to learn their story. it’s genuinely one of my favorite places in this game.
This was the point where I gave up playing the first time. I had decided to play it after seeing Watchmojo name it as the best game of all time (and yes, I did unironically watch their content back then), so I tracked down an emulator on my mom's old ass laptop, because N64 wasn't exactly a common find in South Africa. I was just really struggling to work out where to go, and so many of the rooms looked the same, so I just figured I'd come back some other time. I was maybe 15 at the time? Anyway, I kept trying to come back and get through this temple, but kept losing interest and giving up. After a while, I kinda just forgot about it and went back to playing Pokemon on my DS. A year or two had gone by before I found myself humming this weird piece of music. I couldn't remember where it was from, but I knew it was from a game soundtrack. I kept thinking about it, and eventually I remembered that it was from Ocarina of Time. I suddenly had this huge desire to play it again and really try to beat it. By this point, my mom's laptop was busted and I'd bought a 2DS, because it was cheaper than a 3DS. I found that Ocarina of Time 3D was on discount, and after saving for a bit, managed to get it. I played through the whole game again to try work out where that sound was, and when I finally got to the Forest Temple, I remembered exactly what had happened those years ago. I beat the whole game after that, then went back and 100% completed Hero Mode, and from there, I went and beat every Zelda game I could find. The Legend of Zelda is now my favourite video game franchise, and I think I owe it all to this track. I still come back and listen to it often. It's not even that easy of a listen, it just means a lot to me now.
OoT is a piece of art. Few games come close to being the perfect match of: narrative, music, progression, difficulty pacing, etc. It's the perfect combination of these things that makes OoT the best game ever made. Look how this song perfectly match the temple environment, just like the water temple and spirit temple songs. The transition from child to adult is so clear, as others pointed out, the contrast between lost woods, with it's old happy song is now transformed into this creepy song. This transformation also resonates perfectly with the hero narrative of progression in challenges, like the game is telling you that, as adult, the enemy is much more dangerous.
The Forest Temple is one of my favorite Temples in the game. This music goes right along with the atmosphere of the temple, with the green vines and vegitation that grows everywhere. And the boss fight with Phantom Ganon is the best boss that also fits in. Because it gives a feel of what the real Ganondorf battle would be like. I'm kinda sad though that it's the first temple of the game basically because I would have wanted to be a little longer. It just goes by so quickly.
This music sums up the game at this time. The happy go lucky disposition of the child Link part of the game, isn’t worth half a Deku Nut here. This new world in the future is mysterious, dangerous, unknown, but at the same time, there’s something...charming about it all. Something...instinctually stimulating there... That is what this music means.
I understand that for some people this song is kinda scary, but for me... Well it's just beautiful, I really love this song, helps me to sleep sometimes.
Sublime. This is still to this day my favourite track in the game, because of how fresh and natural and ambient it feels I like I even more than the song of storms, or the shop theme, or gerudo valley. It's just that good
This is one of the most unsettling songs I ever heard. Its so beautiful and horrible at the same time. It kinda feels like a bad fever dream or a sleep paralysis like someone said in the comments. Like trapped in a nightmare witch you will never escape
The anticipation that rises in this game while you go trought the 3 stones and then gettin in this temple is a master piece. What a shift in the game! Pure gold.
I swear as a kid I used to think the chanting in the background at 1:14 was a dog barking and would think this Temple is where you find that lady in towns lost dog so I would spend hours in here searching for it
It's an old sample from a CD featuring some traditional African songs. It's taken from the CD you can find on TH-cam: "Zero-G - Ethnic - African 29. Look at 0:36.
This may sound odd, but this is actually really good music to listen to while going hiking. Seems like a given, but I mean, it's even better than you'd expect.
Really, it is a mystical experience playing this dungeon when you are a kid. That spiral chamber. And a sacred place beyond the deep forest. I could live there forever.
This is exactly how 3 minutes and 44 seconds can bring back a whole bunch of childhood memories.....ohhhh zelda you will always be a massive part of my life...and now to my Zelda gang i wish you well my brothers and sisters ✌&💙
This dungeons is the best level design ever created. The Air, the mystery music, the ruins, ghosts, first dungeon after being an adult, the feeling of "Now the real game begins", the epic (and unique) boss fight... Everything is perfectly placed... Ocarina of Time is, by far, the best game ever created.
This temple took me so long because I had no clue what to do, I had to repeatedly watch gameplays to know what to do next. This music didn't help me either 😂
This game came out at the perfect time & blew everyone away. We could not stop playing it. It is still, to this day, in the World's book of Guinness for most pre-ordered game in history. To say this was ahead of it's time is a drastic understatement & games have been so much more expansive ever since.
This is one of my favorite songs Koji Kondo has composed. The combination of rattling wood chimes and the weird off-key flute are really creepy, ambient, and mood-setting.

it gives more of a cool vibe then creepy. i rembember just playing this in the pitch black on warm summer nights at like 2 am..
I hope it stays that way for you.
I never felt like it was scary until people said it was
It is considered scary because it almost never repeats itself with any consistency, and this creates an unpredictable feeling. It is also considered scary because of the random stalker-ish parts like the one between 0:18-0:25, which make you feel like someone is lurking behind you without actually being visible.
Me neither. I found it to be cool and soothing :)

Did You Know?:
The flute and vocals (the "hua"! sound) of this song are both part of the same sound sample, and they are a reversed/inverted and slightly slowed version of a set of sound samples from sound libraries named "Ethnic Volume 1" (samples named "African 29-6" through "African 29-9" and "Ethnic Flavors" (sample called "African Flute 05") by the group Zero-G.

The one skin and bones guy from Kakariko - as you're told - either did or would have become a Staflo if he stayed any longer, and the Kokiri girl straight up says in laughing manner "Will you become one **too**?"
Gameplay wise, OoT unfortunately does not age well, especially in combat. But the environmental storytelling told in it is brilliant at times. Though Hyrule Field is an area that was desperately lacking in practically everything.
I remember getting stuck in the forest temple as a kid and oh man did this spooky music not help with my unease lmao
i actually kept on going, the music actually didnt scare me at all for some reason

This game is LEGENDARY. They really caught lightning in a bottle with this one.

I really don't understand what's scary. This song, to me, is like an embodiment of this game's mystery and finding new things to find, thinking you were the first.
Most people have cognitive object permanence but I guess there’s an exception
This dungeon specifically terrified me as a kid so that might explain it
@@jimmea6317 What?
For me it was the whole idea that the game lead you to believe anyone lost in the woods was doomed to become one of the monsters that inhabit it so the repeating, echoing sound effect of Link exerting himself made me feel like the Temple itself was telling me "Many like you have tried and every single one has failed. So will you. You're going to die."
The mystery in a dangerous place, your don't know what is it there, but your know something unespected will happen.

Eerie, haunting, perhaps seemingly isolated, and also somewhat beautiful, as well, somehow, and perhaps a bit serene, too, somehow.

For me, absolutely iconic. This Music and the Forest Temple are the primary Elements I remember about Ocarina of Time. Unforgettable!!!!
As a kid I thought it was ghosts singing. One of my favorite songs.
The song always reminded me of when I was a kid and I used to go exploring forests near my house when I lived in Canada.
And the Gerudo Valley theme reminds me of whenever I cross the border to Mexico as an adult haha.

I keep coming back once a year to give the whole Zelda OOT Soundtrack playlist a listen and gotta say forest temple and spirit temple have that unique and mystic aura in them. All time favourite temple. When I first got there being 10 years old that temple had a maaad impact on how intense the gameplay was....just noticed I still am in love with the forest temple... oh man.
I don’t know if this is plain creepy or relaxing.
Stuck in this place for hours as a kid, the music ate at your soul.
Was driving home at 1am to a light drizzle with my windows down to this. Very atmospheric.
Imagine hearing this in a forest you've never been... at night...
It is a very beautiful song i agree
It is not my favorite part of OOT, but you did a good assessment of the Forest Temple.
Ocarina of Time has one of the best soundtracks in Legend of Zelda. I don't know how Koji Kondo wrote such a masterpiece.
i was never too creeped out by this temple, but i’ve always thought this was the best theme in ocarina. it’s beautiful but unsettling. i always loved the colors of the temple, and it looks like a weird haunted fun house, but with lots of foliage. i loved the poe sisters designs, i wish we got to learn their story. it’s genuinely one of my favorite places in this game.
Its like menacing but also relaxing at the same time.

Jokes on you, I did fire temple first!
So this one was my second temple aha.
Gives me the same feeling as encountering a leviathan in Subnautica. Terrifing and intimidating in a way, but magestic and beautiful in another
This will forever be my favorite theme and dungeon in Ocarina of Time. It finds the perfect blend of mystery, unease, and adventure.

Pure gold.
