ROPE film analysis--using light and a window to tell a story

  • ROPE film analysis. In this video, I will show how Alfred Hitchcock uses time, the light of an open window, and the bruised vanity of a beautiful woman to tell a story in this single-shot masterpiece based on the 1928 murder of a 14 year old boy named Bobby Franks by teenagers Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold from Kenwood situated on Lake Michigan in Chicago’s South Side.
    Rope is based on a story by Hume Cronyn and the script is by Arthur Laurents. The film stars James Stewart, John Dall, Joan Chandler, Cedrick Hardwicke, Farley Granger, Constance Collier, Douglas Dick, Edith Evanson, and Dick Hogan.

    Great analysis. As a 23 year old, im grateful that I watch film like this because it’s so much better than action heavy CGI stimulation roller coaster. This whole movie is like a lesson in how to write compelling characters and have perfect suspense throughout. Definitely a little slow for my generation. But it’s worth it. For people my age that get bored easily, try to appreciate the beauty of the set, amazing visuals with technicolor, and dialogue and you will eventually find yourself in a very compelling plot that you will want to watch again. It’s one of those that you’ll be amazed at how good a simple story and setting can be.

    I love this movie probably my favourite hitchock I enjoy dial m for murder and I forget the movie rear window? that's good too. It's like 12 angry men. As in set in 1 location with conflict. Allowing the audience to never leave that area and figure out what is happening. Extremely smart and doesn't insult us.

      @@godfatherofcinema Wow I didn't know about lifeboat thanks I will need to watch it. Odd how it wasn't in the collection. It seems to the be that way with alfred collections on DVD. I think different studios. I agree. Sadly we just don't see that level of art style in movies. It's all flash and CGI with no substance in modern movies. Don't get me wrong some are good. I just miss more simpler sets. Like "the thing" movie 1982 people still watch that yearly and talk about the jackets and stuff. Which is smart. It gets people talking. Something great about knowing the layout of a set. It lets you know where each character is even if not in the shot.

And all the subtle threats Hans make. He knows their in the floor boards. But is seeing if the French will give the family up. Or will he make the french mans life hell? This is why he talks about rodents. And Birds like eagles being the german. Whats interesting aswell Germans really thought they were better then french people back in the day at least some. A famous french guy said that he was hearing how the german is superior to the french and since then he has been sceptical of anyone making a superior claim. This was pre ww1 I believe. It’s amazing. It came out a month after Star Wars. So it was doomed to fail from the start. Only now has it gained the respect it deserves.
    It’s a remake of 1953 French Film Wages of Fear and from what I’m told it beats the original.

      Here's what I hope is a clearer answer to your question. Fear represents Phillip's fear of getting caught; Vanity applies to both Brandon and Janet: Brandon in that he opens the window after murdering David as if to show the world his handiwork; Janet in that--in that--she wanted everyone to think that she dumped Kenneth who actually dumped her. Shame applies to Phillip and Janet: Phillip in that he is ashamed and against Brandon opening the curtains to let the world see their handiwork; Janet in that she is ashamed about the truth coming out that Keneth dumped her and not the other way around.

    2010 is Ok. I always felt that it goes out of its way to explain 2001 explicitly. The characters say the word “monolith” too much I recall. It’s ok. Not great. Shame because I really love Peter Hyams as a director.
    Others films of his I love Capricorn One.
    Busting with Elliot Gould and Robert Blake is great with one of the best foot chases have seen.
    Another would be Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines - which my brother told me last night that there was an idea to do sequel to soon after to be called Running Scared Around The World. That would have been good. But it fell apart
    Running Scared is one of those forgotten gems of the 80s.

      Sorry about the delay in getting back to you on this comment. I was curious about 2010 because I too am a fan of Peter Hyams' films. I'll still give it a go although the points you make kind of turns me off as I think that the appeal of 2001 is in what it doesn't tell you. That it leaves so much to the imagination.

    • @terencemiguana
      @terencemiguana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been a while science I saw it and it was on VHS. Don’t remember disliking it just felt is was a bit average. It does move forward from what happened in 2001 in a respectable way.
      It’s not Exorcist II where it seems to try and ruin what came before. The biggest crime a sequel can do. Matrix Reloaded felt that way too.
      Don’t let me put you off. It has some interesting moments and the cast is good. It just does not have the sense of massive transcendence that Kubrick film has. Not an embarrassment by ant stretch but not a film I’ve been compelled to se again in a hurry.

    Okay, Godfather, I love your film analysis, but you have omitted the obvious in this film: the characters are obviously gay/bisexual. Why did you not bring this fact in your analysis? Did you feel it was not relevant? As a gay man, I feel this movie-with all of it's stereotypes toward gay men-i.e., murderous- it is noteworthy of mention.

    • @godfatherofcinema
      @godfatherofcinema  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Scott. I omitted it because it was not in-line with the point I was making being the inherent evil nature of human beings. Bringing a gay theme into this analysis would have been gerrymandering and distracting from its thesis. It could work in an all-encompassing analysis but would have also demanded much more time than this analysis. I did several all-encompassing analysis (Dr. Strangelove, Scenes from a Marriage, etc) but those videos could have easily been broken into several shorter and more effective videos.
