Yeah I love this movie. I think its Hitchcocks most stylistically daring at that point in his filmography. I agree with you those final shots are incredible and were really well shown by the type of strucureing you used in this video.

Rope is one of my favorite films as well. I’ve never heard that it is only 10 shots!
It was Hitch’s first film in color which I think makes this film even more ambitious.
    Great review!!

I think I’ve seen Psycho twice. I have no idea how many times I’ve watched Rope. Easily my favorite Hitchcock movie. One I enjoy putting on just to listen to the dialogue while I’m doing something else.

This one is definitely in my top 10, I feel this movie shows it's pretty hard to get away with murder, when Brandon and Phillip manage to do a good job of not getting caught, unfortunately Rupert is way too good, and he detects suspicion.

Wonderful overview Nathan - I think you've captured the essence of the film and its status as a 'underrated' Hitchcock masterpiece. There has never been any question about its quality - but it is rarely put in the same league as Rear Window, Vertigo etc. The fact that it is so concise (around 80 minutes) is even more impressive. Another point to note - forgotten in most of its analysis - is that it was Hitchcock's first film in colour

One of the most riveting films of all time! I've seen it countless times, yet I can never take my eyes off of it for a second.
When the "5 missing films" were finally re-released in 1984 after being unavailable for two decades I was fortunate enough to get to see them all in a movie theater. They were all wonderful to see, but "Rope" was the standout.
I am intrigued by the unique trailer as well. "Hitch" actually went and filmed an extra scene not part of the film itself, which serves as a prologue and introduction to the characters. I can't think of any other trailer that did this.
You're review is great. I've just now discovered your channel. The "ranking" video just appeared in my feed, and as a life-long "Hitch" fan I had to dive right in!

    I love one-location Hitch movies:
    Lifeboat (1944)
    Rope (1948)
    Dial M for Murder (1954)
    Rear Window (1954)

I love how you did that edit, with the freeze frame and the gunfire followed by the word shot in red next to the number for each take it was. The 3rd being my favorite. You really chose classic lines for a classic movie!

Oh, the box is closed, rope entirely inside. Few minutes later the rope is hanging out of box. Later, the Lazaras story Brandon tells. Did he come to then entirely give out getting rope out of box? Or camera error?

Hitchcock had an interest in the various sex lives around him and was quite aware that Farley Granger and John Dahl were both gay and that Farley at the time Rope was made was having a passionate affair with Arthur Laurents who worked on the script of Rope.

I love your channel, especially the Hitchcock videos. I do find it interesting that you don’t mention the obvious homosexual relationship between Phillip and Brandon. I believe at the time this movie was released in 1948 and the Director being the type of Director that Hitchcock was that it was very bold and daring for him to have a featured gay couple as major stars in a film and, they were both gay and their private life. It tells us a lot about who Hitchcock was as a human being and as another layer of intrigue and suspense to ROPE.

@@leeallen2864 thank you so much! Yes it’s a great point, it’s just not something I felt obligated to point out because I considered it more common knowledge. But definitely could’ve made a whole section on that - proves how layered this movie is!

I feel sort of guilty for liking this deeply flawed movie (or anti-movie) as much as I do. For starters, James Stewart is obviously miscast. He looks confused, insecure, weak and worrisome, at total odds with the character he's supposed to portray. Hitchcock wanted Cary Grant for the role, but he turned it down. Too bad he couldn't be forced, as I'm sure Grant would be perfect for the role.

This is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies though i think Jimmy Stewart is horribly miscast. I think he was great in Rear Window and Suspicion. But anyone else would have been better in this role. My pick Clifton Webb. Stewart is too sincere and doesn't fit his awe shucks demeanor sticks out. I am a Stewart fan but him in this is like Mr. Smith Goes to NYC.
Stewart was perfect in Rear Window and Suspicion as well as his other non Hitchcock movies but not this. 😊

I can totally get by with this take. Stewart himself felt miscast.

Toying with everyone, Brandon. Based on real personalities, kindly making victim an adult.
