That was really cool. I just wish that this deck came with a whole set, so we could make a space marine deck, a Mechanicus deck, a Sisters of Battle deck, an Inquisition deck, etc., all of them. It is a cool idea, but the forces of the imperium are quite varied. Even in the Chaos deck, they get more than one Demon Primarch! I really thought that this was going to be an Ultramarine bonanza.

The swords to ploughshares art is itself a reference to how the leman russ is actually a genuine tractor (albeit not an agricultural one) that was modified into a weapon of war because of a mix of desperation and it's cost efficiency at the time and due to the nature of the imperium it just stuck as a battle tank.

Your enthusiasm was so infectious I actually bought this deck. I'd preordered a friend who loves 40K the Necron deck, so now I'll be able to play against him!
One of the only things I know about 40K are the Ciaphas Cain novels, I've read one or two and found them so much more entertaining than they had any right to be. I dunno if anyone else had this experience, but my library had a basket of books in the sci-fi/fantasy section trying to get people to read, and they were all licensed game novels. That said, they were actually all surprisingly good, Cory Herndon's Ravnica trilogy, Starcraft: Liberty's Crusade by Jeff Grubb, and one of the Ciaphas Cain ones, I think it was Traitor's Hand.
I gotta say, I'm disappointed not to get a card for the HERO OF THE IMPERIUM, but this deck looks *RAD*.

Sanguinary Priest and the quote aren't really off at all Vince: the thing about the Red Thirst is that it's a separate, and older, flaw within the Blood Angels that's been around since the very beginning, and it doesn't lead to the Black Rage at all - it leads to the marines becoming ravening, blood-crazed cannibalistic monsters - because it has nothing to do with being angry... its name is quite, quite literal.
The Red Thirst is, as the name suggests, an ever present thirst for the particular red fluid that pumps through the veins of all the delicious people that the scions of Sanguinius are meant to be protectors of, and not to eat: they're space vampires, they very literally drink blood - giving in to the Thirst means to indulge that need to the point of mania, to the point of not caring that its your allies you're snacking on in the middle of a battle, rather than willing donations from chapter serfs being sipped around a table in the company of your battle brothers.
The Black Rage is a separate genetic flaw that the psychic imprint of the death of Sanguinius left on his sons, where a particular event or circumstance propels them back into the memories of Sanguinius or that of ancient Blood Angels in the proximity of Sanguinius, during the Siege of Terra - the Rage they fall into is the righteous fury of their gene sire directed against the vile traitors, but theirs is unfocused and blind, because they're reliving a war long ended and seeing enemies all around them instead of what's actually there; you don't generally recover from the Rage because it's nearly impossible to snap yourself back out of that memory, once you fall into it completely (there are examples of marines teetering on the brink who were able to reassert their sense of the present, but it's really only Mephiston that ever "recovered" from the Black Rage with his mind intact).
You're as apt to fall to the Rage during a thunderhawk insertion where no one is shooting at you as you are to fall to it in the height of battle, you guard against it by anchoring your sense of self, not refraining from fury; falling to it is what produces the uncontrollable fury.

    • @PleasantKenobi
      @PleasantKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This was a great comment! Thank you!
I've always seen the Thirst and the Rage as part of a sliding scale - because I feel like that's how I understood it growing up and playing as a kid. However, I'm almost certainly wrong. A learning moment.
Recently listened to Fear to Tread where they talk about the Thirst as a dark secret Sanguinius doesn't know how to solve.
The Black Rage is explictly the memory of Sanguinius' fall - I had never put these two together to realise that my previous belief was off. Weird how you internalise this stuff.
Always willing to learn, ans thank you for the well thought out reply. Really appreciate it.

Great review! Even I learned a tonne about the different backstories (40k players for a couple of years).
As a Grey Knight player, I have some things to add.
12:50, that's not an Inquisitor - That's Aldrik Voldus, Grandmaster of the Third Brotherhood of Grey Knights.
18:50, here WotC used a weird picture. That's not a Paragon, but an Apothecary. Paragons are the leaders of squads of Paladins (Elite Grey Knights) while the Apothecaries are often found as supports for these squads, and the rest of the Grey Knights.
But of course, this is all Heresy to know - so you'll all have to report to your nearest Inquisitor for mind-wipe and / or servitor duty.

After getting multiple Primarchs in the Chaos deck, I'm surprised we didn't get Guilliman. Or Sanguinius at least.

Sanguinius is dead in Warhammer 40K. Maybe if they did a Heresy deck, they’d show the primarchs

@@TandemTuba I haven't seen the leak. But an entire deck in a secret lair is a bit strange. I would like to believe that it was a reinforcement with important characters like Guilliman

Great video. This deck has it tough because they pulled from the full Imperial roster which waters down the overall theme. Maybe next time they will do individual factions within the Imperium.

I'm down for wh40k getting a side set, even if it's commander legal only. The potential for decks based on the emperium and chaos factions is already huge. I'd love to be able to build an Adeptas Sororitas or an Inquisition deck.

It likely wasn't a vehicle due to there being a high chance that the pilot had melded with the machine.

In regards to "And they shall know no fear" That looks to be an Iron hands Captain. Though hard to see, there is a hand painted on the shield, Plus the Servo arm does tie into the factions strong link with the Mechanicum!

To be fair, while Celestine doesn't have a recursion mechanic on her as a card directly, if she's your commander then there's a bit of the "keeps coming back" flavor going on. I assume that was the thought behind not giving it to her on the card itself that way they could explore more elements of her character without adding more text? Or maybe I'm reading into it too much
