    Yellow Shirts are NO JOKE. I didn't spend much time on the flight deck compared to others, and anyone who's ever worked the flight deck during flight operations has balls of steel...green, white, red, brown, purple, et all. But, those Yellow Shirts are some bad m'fers and I have mad respect.

      @@julieeverett7442Not necessarily. Most of yellow shirts I’ve worked with came straight out of school and got placed into a Division Officer position. They barely could tell you Port side from Star Board side.

    When My eldest son was on his first deployment, he had mentioned how loud it was as he slept below the flight deck, if I recall. Back then, the flight deck contained the Chinook and the Harrier. Top rack he had luckily After hearing how much room there was. He stated how After a while, he got used to it. I never quite understood the sound until now. Hearing it with headphones and not Bluetooth is incredible. Rough, dangerous work zone, and an extremely loud place to be is quite the place to be. Not sure how many hours a day you work, but every one is so needed.
    My youngest son ( both of my sons are the only kids I have) was being deployed so many times. Months at a time. He has this way of beating around the bush to figure out if it was a deployment or just being silly! He loves his job that he performs every day, but really loves being deployed.
    Thank you for loving our country so much to every man and women, that risk your life every day for us. We are thankful for you, and owe our country filled with men and women like you, that want to keep this the Land Of The Free , and The Home Of The Brave. Every single one of you are so greatly needed and so greatly appreciated.

    A few notes (for the eighties if I remember well), Military or MIL (power setting) was full power without burners, Maximum (MAX) power was full power with afterburner - We always took-off with burners unless authorization from the CO. The burner signal was a "five digit spread" from the cat officer or some used their foot in a kicking motion (or "pedal to the floor" like).
    The pilot salutes not for "permission to leave the ship" but to signal the shooter that all his instruments (engine) read correctly at MAX power, that his controls feel free (wiping the controls), and that he (and his RIO, BN, NFO ...) is/are ready.
    The Catapult Officer (CAT or Shooter) checks every catapult personnel/final checkers ("green shirts") for a "thumbs up" by pointing at them, and looks at the pilot again, when satisfied, he crouches, taps the deck them point his fingers towards the bow with a "pistol firing" gesture. This choreography is standardized so that there is no confusion, no forgotten item, no mistake before firing the catapult.
    If the pilot suddenly notices something wrong, he has to shake his head in a "no fashion" i.e. once he saluted, he has to assumed that he can be shot at any moment. The CAT O will suspend the firing (if he can in time) and the pilot is not supposed to back the power until the CAT O is standing in front of his aircraft (i.e. if the Shooter will go in front of the aircraft, that means that the catapult has been suspended.
    It is "intense" but that is nothing compared to the intensity of making it back to the carrier (i.e. arrested landing), that is where you earn all your flight pay in one pass! Ciao, L Captain USN (Ret)

    Centerdeck Operator - Thumbs up

My hat is off to him because like I tell him he had to be NUTS to run around on that flight deck. He always tells me Don't pay attention for 3 seconds and your ass is toast. On CVN-65 USS Enterprise there seems to be an added protocol. After release brakes the shooter then points to several deck personnel to verify that he has checked they are standing in the Final Ready position with both arms overhead and hands open. The first he checks is the Deck Edge Operator, the person who operates the catapult. He would probably also check the safety observer personnel crouched behind each wing.

    • @raptop103
      @raptop103  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! If something is wrong with the cat or the jet they will suspend the launch. The signal is to cross your arms over your head and crouch down to one knee. Once one of the three the suspend buttons are pressed, the jet's launch bar is disengaged from the shuttle, and the jet comes back down to idle, you can troubleshoot what's wrong and go from there. There is a suspended cat shot right at the beginning of this video: th-cam.com/video/j3lDWhhvSKg/w-d-xo.html

  • @raptop103
    @raptop103  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This a little out of my area of expertise, but in my experience, you can never have too much coordination. I've never personally seen an Army guy on a CVN, but I'm sure it's happened at some time. More likely, I would expect the Army guy to have an LNO at the appropriate AOC who would get to hang out with the NALE and get his inputs fed to the ATO.
    I won't even take a guess at your second question because it would be just that, a guess.

      telling the pilot to go full throttle

    • @TwentytenS4B8
      @TwentytenS4B8 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The planes launch at full military power which is full throttle without afterburners. The shooter is telling the pilot to throttle up when he is waving his fingers. They do this in the event of an unexpected accident so the aircraft will have enough power to take flight. They land at full power too just in case they miss the wire or one breaks they can touch and go.

    If both catapults are being used does one "Shooter" run both lanes?

    • @raptop103
      @raptop103  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. There are two catapults on the bow and two on the waist (amidships). So two Shooters are working at a time, and have coordinate the timing of their shots to ensure safe separation after launch. (if you watch my video of shooting from the bubble, you can hear this coordination woven into the launch procedures)

      I was in a Navy patrol squadron, same deal as you, get off work and have a cold one. When state side we always lived off base. I even spent 5 months in the Azores. Air Force bases have better amenities than the navy bases. When in Rota, Spain we knew the back street bars where the locals would hang out and cheer for their soccer teams with them when the drunk shipboard sailors were port.

    • @raptop103
      @raptop103  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      He is 1 of 2 people responsible to make sure the cat is set to the correct power (based on aircraft type, weight, and the amount of headwind). The book is the tables of data for all the various types/configurations of aircraft. He and the shooter confirm setting and it is relayed to the main console operator below decks who is looking it up independently. If the two operators are in agreement, then the launch may proceed.

    Who controls the catapult ? Does the pilot have a say in it or just hang on?

    • @raptop103
      @raptop103  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There's about 15 people operating the catapult, both above and below deck. The pilot very much has a say whether they go flying or not... if they have a problem with their aircraft, they can decline the launch, the sequence will be suspended, and they will taxi the aircraft back to parking to fix whatever the problem is. When you see the pilot salute, that is their indication that they are ready to launch, and are requesting permission to leave the ship. The Shooter returns the salute to say "permission granted," and completes the final steps of the launch sequence.

      @@raptop103 Thanks so its kinda like riding a bull. Pilot says he is ready and someone pushes the button and he is out of there. I have 2 grandsons on air craft carriers 1 east coast 1 west some time I might have to make a trip let them show or explain it. Put that on my bucket list.

    • @torn-_shuttle123
      @torn-_shuttle123 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Once the aircraft is positioned on the Catapult, the pilot is pretty much at the mercy of the crew, granted his plane is good to go. The Pilot has no idea what’s going on below decks or topside. That’s why he relies on the Shooter or Safety Observer. Below decks, the CCP Operator controls and observes the Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Steam portion of the launch.

      Fine, just to let you know they do this at night too sometimes all night and into the next day. They do it in bad weather and even when they are exhausted, day after day after day, They are exposed to extreme danger every second they are on the flight deck. Make a mistake and you die. Except for the Officers most of them are HS grads in their late teens, early twenties working for essentially a "chump change" salary. No TOP GUN music, no Tom Cruise or the hot babe he gets at the end of the movie for you. Still sound like fun? SEE YOUR NAVY RECRUITER.

    I'd like to know what/who the shooter is pointing at, right before he kneels down and the plane takes off.

    • @raptop103
      @raptop103  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's pointing to the cockpit while verifying that the pilot has his head steady and back against the headrest. It's the last scan item because, if the pilot finds something wrong with the plane, he's got that last chance to suspend the launch.

    Under normal circumstances, no. In the old days, they had a security detail of leathernecks, but the ship's crew covers those duties these days.

      That's when there is a trainee... the one in front is training, and the instructor is in back. The cat crew know to follow the instructor in case something goes awry.

      They are the instructors overseeing the student that isn't fully qualified yet. You get between 500-1000 cat shots "under instruction" before you go solo.

    • @raptop103

      The guy in front is in training, the other guy is the "real" shooter. A qualifying shooter will get about 600 cat shots under instruction before going solo...

    I tried posting this before, but it didn't take. My hornet buds suggested it could be a puff of stray steam out of the cat track that caused a little burp through the system. I personally have no idea, but it sounds plausible.

      jimbolyo I was an AT w/VA-165 The Boomers, flying Grumman A-6E Intruders. Not the prettiest birds on the boat, but they brought many an aviator back to the ship, despite suffering structural damage which would have put most other aircraft in the drink.
