PENTAX K1 wins big time. Some SONY fan Boys may say it is subtle but is not. K1 images are better in every aspect. I have to add, if you like the handling of the A7III better you will prefer it and make better pics. It is great having options but never low ball PENTAX because they have fantastic cameras. Another great video!! The Pentax K-1 has great ISO-invariance which gives you a lot of flexibility (you can underexpose to avoid highlights). The A7III clearly not so. But you can use a bit higher ISO directly with the A7III. It seems to handle very well the highlights (by other videos). Then, the K-1 looks just a bit sharper, though a bit noisier, when pushing up the ISO. By the way, pixel count, or better, pixel size, does not correlate with lower ISO performance anymore at all, at least in FF cameras. I checked it, mathematically with data from Dxomark, for 44 cameras. With so many technological variables playing a role in the cameras we must not assume anymore that bigger pixels mean better ISO performance.
SwitchRich That is for your case only. Sadly, this just means you never took it out to shoot in all condition. In this case, keep shooting the way you are shooting but once you realize a color shift, yup.

Put it this way, in terms of the best DR without shift in colors and breaking , Pentax . Sony A7iii is good like the others but no where above a Pentax system. Its a hard pill to swallow. Thanks, Li! I take advantage of my K-1's dynamic range often when taking pictures at high school football games. These are smaller schools, which typically have poor light quantity and quality. I definitely would like for Pentax to spend some R&D on autofocus, but as with any system I've learned to shoot within Pentax capabilities. For the other genres of photography I shoot, autofocus doesn't play a role. That said, given my current results, autofocus alone is not enough of a reason to switch systems. btw I had been on the fence about switching and the A7III was on the top of my list for consideration. Your reviews have solidified my decision not to change yet. I really appreciate these reviews!
Russell! Not a problem. Just here discovering the Pentax myself. In my other videos, I mentioned I am a Nikon shooter, checking to see what is going on here in the Pentax world. I can see why people love the Pentax. The dynamic range, color and noise performance is fantastic and I own the D810. wait for the the Pentax K1 MKIII, hopefully that will be the camera to last a life time.

We can agree on this together. Pentax isnt marketing anything. They just put a product on the shelf and hope its sales with no real advertisement. They dont even contact me. This is also my last Pentax video for the brand. I only did this channel to spot the good and the bad for the brand so people can be aware of it.

I wasnt so sure about the Penatx at all when I started, After 3.5 years, Im so confuse. Great System, not enough of marketing for it. My local camera store dont carry Pentax anymore. So it is rare to get it locally.
Excellent test! I would say that even my current K-3 is shining with a quite good dynamic range, that's why I usually tend to underexpose my shots without any worries in post. Pentax did a really great job with this.
Sony manufacturers the K1 sensor. It's not a difference in the sensor. It's the processing units each camera uses and how they process the information.
Great review, particularly the more detailed dynamic range test. Kudos to the Pentax K-1 and it’s PRIME IMAGE ENGINE! I’m surprised reviews always focus on the latest and greatest camera releases and highlight sensor manufacturer. Granted, it’s important, especially where PENTAX and NIKON use the exact same sensor and achieve different results. But I find it interesting in such sensor review comparisons, they never really talk about the Image Engine behind it engineered and made by the camera manufacturer itself. Now perhaps that is what you allude to as dynamic range and colour. But it’s much more, a coalescence of metering, custom image, program modes, white balance, colour rendering, MTF info (how the camera utilizes lens characteristics) and so on. It would be interesting to see a test comparing metering modes, program modes, custom imagine modes and such between cameras, to get back to the basics of how cameras see light and tones, hues and colour, the numerous parameters of control made available to the photographer. It what also be interesting to see comparative tests of the K-1 Mark II, given it’s the most recent model, from 2018. It embodies the advancements from the Imagine Engine of the KP with updates for more accurate Blue and Green colour renderings, improved Pixel Shift, lower noise at higher ISO, faster AF, and more.
I now have a K1 and it’s an amazing camera. Absolutely love it. Yes it’s a large camera but it fits me well and the results are terrific especially when matched with a top lens.
Pentax K-1. When you look through the viewfinder directly at a powerful light source (mainly the Sun), you can see that are difficult to see, and even disappear (due to the internal reflections of light in the pentaprism I imagine), the green light diodes of exposure information (speed, aperture, EV, ISO, etc.) Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Is it possible to adjust the power of the viewfinder's light diodes? Or how?
I saw this crap on my Sony A7III when I was shooting at Astros. Let me say, this video doesn't do its justice. It gets even worse than that. Sony 14 bit raw is a total joke. I ended up just selling it off for a Nikon.
Yup, I could had shown a lot worse but I think the audience got the picture. All in all , the Sony is getting there. I will give them 2 more years to reach its full potential but by that time, the market may have shifted. I will also be transitioning over to my Nikons to review!
Interesting. I wish one of your last remaining videos would compare both camera’s video performance. It’s great to see how they compare from a photography perspective but it would be even more interesting to also see how close they are video-wise (I know Sony would win but still....). Too little too late I guess but I hope you somehow change your mind and continue this channel. 🙂
Graham Hobbs I agree. I’m just saying that it’s better to also compare video performance so it’s more complete. Having owned the K1 and K3 I know just how good or how bad they are for video. I use Fujifilm now for mostly everything but I have high hopes for the new Pentax. I just love Pentax.
That is very interesting. From what I gather from my friends, the A7III is great but the color of the skin tone are off. It is very wonky in those area. Having said that, I never tested out the Pentax video before, and to think about it I never done video on my Nikons lol. I only done video in Lumix. A better video would taking look at the 4k.

Lol yup. I normally buy a new camera every 1.5 - 2 years but I still have the K1 around after 4 years so that is an interesting fact I noticed. You are getting fantastic colors ,iso and DR. Sad that the media dont ever test these things. They just move on to the next and next and next lol
Its a shame such a great and giant brand slowly vanished after introduction of digital and now it has a tiny piece of market when comapred to gigants like Canon or Sony & Nikon. But still holds up great and has its loyal fans which I adore. Its quite funny that Sony made a sensor for Pentax that worked better than the sensor made byt Sony for their own cameras...

Nikon D850 has been here even longer and yet still in production (although the real flagship is D6 is being updated every 3 years) Or maybe they are working on a mirrorless version... it will take a bit more time when compared to the leaders who outsell them As long as the manual film goes, Im mostly Nikon FM2n or Pentax SP guy but I never say no to a nice EOS or OM body as well Not much into digital, but would love to try that baby one day ... many photographers agreed they loved their Pentax digital bodies

He is right!, I sold off my A7III because of this issue. uncompress is decently better but still not good for low light. You will find strange stuff still. Its an entry level camera. I sold it for a Nikon but the Pentax looks impressive. Good luck!
If you were buying a K-1 today would you choose the Mark II instead of the original? I recall reading somewhere that the sensor of the original K-1 produces better results for RAW shooters.
I like Pentax in every way except they need to improve their ISO performance across all their cameras. I dont care if they say their cameras can do 819200 ISO. I want to see better images when the ISO is cranked up. ISO means nothing on paper alone.
I own the K-1 M1 and had purchased the A7 III and returned it a few days later after two full days of shooting. I did not like the output of the Sony at all. Clarity was the main issue I had with the Sony especially in shots that had a wide dynamic range. The AA filter on the Sony A7 III I think factored into some of the clarity issues as well. The Sony also felt like a toy camera to me, lightweight is nice but it felt like it would break if I dropped it and did not seem weatherproof at all. I would like to replace my heavy K-1 with a mirrorless camera at some point I just haven't found something that I like with the features and quality as the k-1. Perhaps Pentax will come out with a mirrorless camera at some point, but I am not holding my breath on that one.
This is also why I haven't gone all in on the Sony. Trust me, I would love to and get that Sony money that everyone is getting, but the quality isn't there. Its a bit half baked. I will give them credit, they are going in the right direction but I don't think I will invest in them like my other systems. I will check with Sony in another 2 years.
Yup, I could had ended the test with the first DR and say wow its even hehe. That is what a Sony reviewer would do. I tend to really push it out and see the real deal. But now people can go and watch other reviewers and see how they do the DR test. hehe. If they Sony passed the DR test, I would been so amaze and reported it. I was already amaze with the color science :D
Hey Mike, That is a huge question. There is no one setting. It depends what lens you have, the time of day, what you are going for. With the K1, its very simple to do HDRI, bracketing, astro, and etc. There is a ton of tools and a variety of ways to do it. I don't do any series on here but maybe down the road.

Good comparison, BUT with SONY you should have used Uncompressed RAW - much better shadow recovery without artifacts and purple coloring.

This is the old K1 not the newer K-1 mk.2 ! The newer Pentax has better noise performance.
The newer K1 mk2 has worse dynamic range performance saldy. I did a video on it.

Li, is there a chance to see the dynamic range test between Pentax and Canon?
That was the plan but there is no budget to do so. I wanted to test the Canon EOSR , Lumix, and Fuji medium formate.

Haha , yea, the DR is far better than the K-1 vs the Sony. Another user down below claims to see even worse on their A7III. Mine was very minimal.

When Pentax says it got 14-bit color they deliver 14-bit color. When Sony say it got a 14-bit color, they deliver 13-bit color.

Im not sure on the Sony part but everything was manual focus.
