Could that large goose egg be a double yolk egg, potentially twins?

I don’t think Abby “gave up” when she came back after seeing the aerial predator. Rather, I think Toby and Abby were doing exactly what a team of livestock guardians should do; one goes out to search and make sure the threat has left the area, while one stays back with the livestock to make sure they won’t be unattended and vulnerable to predators. This is why having 2 or more livestock guardian dogs together is important. Toby is older and more experienced, so he probably went out to search, where he’d possibly encounter a predator while Abby stayed back with the livestock. It may have seemed like she gave up since the birds are mostly all safe in the hoop house, but you had opened the door and let them out. This kind of behaviour would be very advantageous in the summer when all the birds are roaming around outside.

I have a suggestion for you to consider. The area with all the cedar? Have you considered hiring a couple of young guys to come in and clear cut that all except for a swath to the north and west? It would give you a protected area to winter the cattle out of the prevailing winter winds. The neat thing about cedars is if they are cut off at ground level, they won't grow back. You could seed that area this Spring or Fall, depending how fast you move on this. Rotating the cattle through there even if all you are doing is feeding hay will help to increase the nutrients and kick start the grass.
What you do with the cedars is up to you. You could sell them as fence posts, or firewood or work a deal with the guys who cut them down. Maybe they would take them off your hands. They might know a market for them, give you a percentage. The brush could be piled up for rabbit habitat. It could be supplied with water pretty easily and would give you more pasture close to the existing infrastructure.

A weirdly effective makeshift brush setup I used to see all the time when I lived in upstate NY -- clusters of carpet brushes / old car snow brushes / push broom heads clustered together and attached to barn walls and fences. Looks crazy, and I'm guessing they wear out super quick, but cheaper than getting more "real brushes" and easier than rearranging all the cattle supplies.

I have two pekins (f) Duchess and Sugar, and one mallard mix duck (m) Coffee who looks full mallard, all are siblings. The girl's eggs are beautiful when I candle them, they have a distinct spiral pattern in the shell. I also feel so privileged to be able to hold and hug a mallard duck when he lets me catch him. Fortunately he never flies away from his favorite sister Sugar, because we live in the midst of a bunch of duck clubs, he is one lucky duck in a private pond with 2 beautiful girls.
I bet that your giant egg might be a double yoker. Early in the season (or first timers getting started) is when I get yokeless Fairey eggs, or double yolk eggs...the hen's systems sometimes take a minute to sort out the egg assembly line :)
