    Hey morgan! 10+ years experience raising and breeding pigs… I noticed the first one to come out has a bit of a bulge under her belly, keep an eye on it as it can be a hernia and those can cause pretty decent problems when they start growing so it’s best to fix it when they’re as small as possible.. we usually do it a week before they’re weaned if they’re strong enough 🖤 best of luck! Very interested to see how they grow out on the feed!

    If there's a large grocery store nearby, you can try asking for produce scraps. Whenever I'm at my store and go into the produce section, they have a large blue bin(about the size of a standard pallet, and maybe 3-4ft deep) filled with old fruit and veggies, and other things that had to be thrown away. For the most part it looks fine, no mold or anything usually, but it's usually just stuff we can't sell.
    For one, it's healthy food for the pigs, and even if they don't eat it all right away and it starts to go bad and maybe they can't eat it, you could just turn it into compost for Alison's(sry if I spelled it wrong) garden.
    The store gets rid of their trash, you get pig food, and even some compost to grow your own food better. Wins on top of wins.

    • @rosemarielee7775
      @rosemarielee7775 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      We did that, but its surprising how many things (like citrus) pigs can't eat, and getting the staff to run two waste bins was difficult, and sorting through the rotting veg was revolting.

    • @MisterDemonTC

      @@rosemarielee7775 maybe it just depends on location. My store has bins with no wheels so they're designed to move on pallet jacks, so maybe Morgan can forklift them. Probably too heavy for his truck but maybe his buddy Alfred can help with his flatbed.

    I was the brewer at a brew pub. We had a pig farmer that we set up to collect our spent grains. At first he was a little pissy because we couldn't give him adequate lead time to pick up at his convenience. After several brews his attitude changed. His pigs could tell as soon as he pulled in the drive that he had grains and they would get riled up. He also noticed rapid weight gains.
    There should be no smell of fermentation. Those grains do NOT get fermented. Residual search and sugars along with some proteins. Fermetation takes place after the wort (fermentable liquids) are drawn off to the fermentors where yeast is added to start the fermentation.

    Considering the pigs' fate is squealed... I mean sealed, I want to suggest names from the Greek mythology. The Fates were three figures personificating birth, life, and death. The names of the three sisters were Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. The thread they spun, like the life of these pigs, was short.
    I know you usually go for popculture rather than this kind of thing, but I find it poetic. Plus you keep reminding us the three sisters won't be long for this world.

    • @davidwolfson7060
      @davidwolfson7060 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That, is a brilliant suggestion. I too opt for the poetic over the pop, and the three fates and what they personify is "all ye need to know."
      Take it from a person who suggested the names Tasty, Delicious, and Yummy last night, here, on the Live Chat.
      Wow, just the thought of Morgan pronouncing those Greek names for the next six months would be music around GSF. "... while there is the ever exuberant Clotho, running circles around the stoic Lachesis, and the somewhat despondent Atropos, because she can never get enough of the spent grains...."

    Very cool video, with some really neat updates. Re: Abby and the pigs, as a dog trainer, if I might recommend something: Abby clearly has a great working relationship with you at this point. I noticed she listened pretty quickly when you corrected her about barking at the pigs. I also remember you having training sessions with her in the past. You might want to consider doing some more training sessions, but exclusively near the pig pen for the next week or two. Use whatever treats Abby likes most, and just run her through her obedience a couple times a day, starting maybe 30-50 feet from the pig pen. Usually I'd start farther away, but Abby doesn't seem *too* upset by the pigs at this point, so that distance is probably fine. That said, if Abby's too distracted at that distance, leave and try again later, this time a bit farther from the pigs. Over the next few days, move these sessions closer to the pen until she's consistently working through her obedience commands right beside the pen. If you do this regularly, Abby will quickly grow accustomed to the pigs simply being part of the environment, and will also have some positive associations built up around being near them.
    The reason I would recommend doing this proactively is to prevent a negative association from inadvertently being made. For example, if Abby hits the electric fence right as she notices the pigs, that could create a negative association in her mind that would take a bit of effort to undo. The same could occur if every time she goes near them, she gets reprimanded for barking at them (not that she should be allowed to do her "guard dog alert" bark at them - she just needs positive associations, too). I know you've worked with another trainer in the past, so it might be good to just check in and hear any suggestios that person has in terms of how to proactively introduce Abby to the pigs in a manner that removes any wariness, without going too far and associating them as potential playmates in her mind. I'm pretty sure what I wrote above would work, but it never hurts to get a second opinion from a trainer who's more familiar with both you and Abby specifically.
    That said, great job working with her. You've very clearly put in a lot of time, and it shows. Keep up the great work, Morgan!

    Spent grains are nice feed for livestock and are mostly used for cattle, but for pigs especially u should go for spent yeast. Once u dose yeast on a fermentor tank, the yeast will reproduce so that after the fermentation there is a lot of yeast that the brewer has to get rid of. This yeast is perfect pigfeed witch contains a lot of nutrients and is proven to improve meat quality. Just make sure the ph is ok so u dont grow salmonella.

    I think it’s great you’re trying to help restore the pond some! As to your planned stream/spring construction, I’d recommend looking into the soil types if you haven’t already. The Web Soil Survey is an AMAZING resource through the NRCS and can provide you with lots of information about anything related to your soil!
    Also, if you haven’t, I’d also recommend considering planting in and around the pond. It’ll provide more habitat for the baby frogs and with the rest year it might give the plants a chance to get established before the ducks and geese descend on it. :)

    A tip for greatly increasing the capacity of the pond would be chinampas .. that would solve alot for you. Basicly i giant biofilter that also grows food for both you and feed for the fowl.. also great hidingspots for higher biodiversity like amphibians and insects.. then you use some fencing on the chinampas Islands to limit the amount of plants the fowl can eat.. everything that grows out of the fence Will be auto trimmed by the ducks and geese. These chinampas food Islands with a compost area for the fowl to scratch and collect insects. Then you can make a Fair dent on the amount of feed you need to bring in. A artificial wetland in Contact with the pond that is fenced off and planted with wetland friendly foodcrops can also help greatly with bio filtration and mecanical filtration of the pond. Jusy some tips, Google chinampas my friend! ❤

If you do it makes them vomit and it makes the risk of your dog getting infected by something nasty a lot higher. It's best to catch them right by their head carefully with special tool. So far indications are you are not planning to have your pigs in close proximity to you ducks & geese. Once again I would continue to encourage you to generally keep all your fowl segregated from the swine. There are clinical reasons not to let them have ongoing close environmental contact as such contact has been a disease vector to humans.

      Last night, Morgan did a livestream. That livestream is something that was happening currently, the very day it first went up.
      This video is older footage, filmed a week or two before now, so Morgan had no way of knowing at the time this video was filmed that the pigs would already be named yet before this video went up(and the editing probably already finished before the livestream happened too). Most videos don't get posted right away when they are first filmed. It takes time to choose which footage stays in the video and which footage gets cut-out so the video pacing doesn't get bogged down or such and to add in all the memes or other pop-culture reference snippets and so on. But after the video is edited and ready to be posted, it might get already queued to upload a little bit before it actually appears available to viewers, too-so they aren't able to go back and re-edit the video to remove the question or to add in a quick note that the naming status has changed or such, because the critters were named too recently compared to when this video was filmed and uploaded and all. 🙂

    Looks like you're well on your way to a self-sufficient setup!
    When it comes to reducing inputs, maybe when the pond and wetlands area are a bit more established maybe you could try adding duck weed to the pigs diet?
    It usually grows pretty rapidly especially if its removing the excess nutrients from farm runoff. I can't remember which channel it was, but another farm channel used that method and it added a lot of omega 3s and other nutrients you'd normally associate with seafood into their diet

(It's a corgi and most walking felds are twice his size and he loves to roll on the ground.) So it might help something to for your large white farm doggos :D
    And chickens can help you turn over your compost so a chicken save compost place for your weird chickens so they kinda work for you?
