Matt Draper I haven’t seen it yet. I just have to say I was listening to Vampires by The Midnight just before watching this, so the ending really caught me by surprise lol. Good song choice
I love that daredevil uses Catholic imagery and themes, as a Catholic, I like seeing my faith used to tell stories of redemption and forgiveness, rather than a big and imposing secret society that seems to be evil, like it is in a lot of other media
Kyle Pietrusiewicz that’s awesome that you show your faith like that! I’m a Protestant, and I think we all need to show our faith and love in Jesus Christ
I dig it. I'm Muslim and I personally find it refreshing that in Daredevil it highlights religion in a positive way focusing on spirituality rather than politics or division.
As a fellow Catholic who is also a HUGE DD, Spider-Man, and X-Men fan (really huge marvel comics fan), I couldn't agree more!! Praise Christ, Amen brother!
Daredevil is my favorite Marvel hero. He's been pushed to the brink, both physically and mentally. He's a fighter, just like his dad. He gets knocked down, but he gets back up. It may seem corny, but I love how. DD doesn't let his blindness stop him from helping others. As a man who has cerebral palsy, Matt Murdock is my inspiration.
Another Biblical element this run has is Job. Kingpin takes the role of the devil in trying to destroy Matt's spirit by taking away all his earthly goods: his house, gym, his relationships, his job, his savings, etc. It's his inner strength and faith in good, much like Job, that keeps him going and helps him overcome the situation. Karen is similar to God in that it's she who allowed this situation to happen, God accept's the Devil's bet whereas Karen sells the information that enables Kingpin to destroy Daredevil (not Matt). It's Karen's faith in Matt, much like God's in Job's, that ends up saving them both spiritually and in reality. I bought and read Born Again after seeing your video a few months and you were spot on with your video. I'll probably check out other comics that you've reviewed, hopefully you'll continue doing more great reviews.
Very interesting... I recommend reading not only the Book of Job but also Life-Study of Job: www.ministrybooks.org/books.cfm?xid=YWVXUR4U3LJCW o listen to the Bible Radio Broadcast: www.lsmradio.com/audio/Job.html . God bless you
@xYSarenArteriusxY Ooh, I hadn't though of that. This is my first time reading comics---I think I'll have to read them several times to realize how good they are. Reading other comics, like Spiderman, would also help me to understand just how much of a genius Frank Miller is. Do you think God had faith in Job, tho? I mean, He did hold him up as righteous before Satan, but His response to Job after Job threw a fit didn't seem indicative of God "having faith in Job," to me.
This is the finest story Marvel has ever published. It is Miller's masterpiece as a writer. Mazucchelli's art is utterly brilliant. A good follow-up would be Miller and Janson's Elektra story. Equally epic.
The character of Daredevil Spider-man and Iron Man are who I look up whenever I face a challenge or dark time the genuis of what Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and all the many creators of these great characters created
Dark knight returns is not that great that story was nothing but a lazy writing and lazy batman wank that story is the sole reason why the bat wankers exist
Born again is such an inspirational story. I love that Matt had everything taken from him and was brought to the brink of destruction only to be brought back stronger and more determined then ever. Matt Murdock is truley one of the toughest charecters in all of comics. I was more of a Spider Man fan as a kid but Daredevil has grown into my favorite marvel charecter as an adult. He's a fighter and I love the religious themes in the classic Daredevil story. It's refreshing to see faith explored in a positive way instead of the cynical religious story's so often seen in comics.
What I love about Daredevil and what I love about Charlie Cox's performance he really sold the resilience of Daredevil and Matt Murdock and it's why when I met him at Denver Comic Con I had a hard time holding back tears it was just an incredible moment
As a Christian, it is very cool to see Biblical parallels in art. It shows just how essential God is in our lives. I do have to wonder why most Christian hero’s are devil themed... both Nightcrawler and Daredevil are Christian, devil themed hero’s. I guess you could say it’s shows a “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” or “all sinners can reach redemption” but I do really wonder why they’re both devil themed...
There's a line in the much maligned Daredevil movie where our hero says, somewhat despairingly, "I'm not the bad guy!". The devil is the ultimate scapegoat, even though the satan of the Old Testament is more like God's district attorney and prosecutor than a villain. In that way, the devil imagery for Matt Murdock's alter ego makes perfect sense.
Born Again is my favorite comic book of all time and its themes and meaning are incredibly resonant. Do you have a favorite comic? Let me know what it is and why, as well as any comics you hope to see featured on this channel!
Born again and Kraven's last hunt keep changing places as the number one and two in my favorite marvel comics. Maybe that's another one you could do a video on?
I like comics like Watchmen & The Dark Knight Returns, and I have a soft spot in my heart for stories like Superman For All Seasons. But Daredevil: Born Again is my all time favorite book, let alone comic. It's a book that I have loved since I was 18, and your video helped show me things that I never noticed. Thank you.
My favorite panel is when Urich is sitting on that park bench after being forced to listen to that nurse kill the cop. He's sitting there, thinking to himself over and over again, "Don't think of the name! Don't think of the name!" But then, in 1 panel, his face goes from a face of fear and turns into a face of determination, and he says out loud to himself, "Matt Murdock!" I love that moment so much because like... they had him, ya know? Their goal was to silence Ben Urich through fear. And they had accomplished that goal. Until Kingpin takes that 1 extra step, and it's 1 step too far. He enacts that 1 last bit of cruelty, and it's 1 bit of cruelty too much for Urich, and it turns his fear into resolve. I love that so much! I love Urich's entire character arch in this story.
I saw this video months after the release of Daredevil’s season 3, and I got to say it did a FANTASTIC job adapting the Born Again storyline into the Netflix’s version of Daredevil’s universe. Everything was put into its place for it to resemble this storyline. Karen had a terrible past before the happenings of the season and screwed up Matt Murdock’s already stressful life. (And has her own episode ❤️). Foggy tried to keep everything together with Karen, Matt, his own life as a lawyer and a lover. Ben Uric unfortunately was kill in the first season but that didn’t stop the writers to create a perfect character to take his place, Agent Nadeem, which in my opinion was one of the best story arcs in the season! Fisk of all introduced us to the great villain Bullseye was and both of them really were the peek of the season, but of course I wouldn’t forget Matt Murdock. Our hero that with everything against him, he still managed to save New York definitely from Fisk and his dueling with his own self was amazing to say the least. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO MATT DRAPER x
Watching this analysis made me realize how great this story really is. The first time I read it, it was GOOD but I guess I had the high expectations and to an extent the wrong expectations. Truly a great video here!! GOOD JOB!
After four decades of reading countless comic book stories, BORN AGAIN remains my favorite. It stands as (I'm my opinion) the most seamless pairing of a writer and an artist blended into a single voice. It's messy and elegant, intimate and epic. It is my go to recommendation for fellow geeks & non comic readers alike. Masterpiece.
Another winner. Can't say that I've read a Daredevil comic, but this has certainly convinced me of the potential this character holds for a riveting story. It is Frank Miller after all. Are you going to tackle Miller in the future? An in depth look at your favourite Miller Media? :) xx
Wen Bilson Thanks, Wen! Miller also did great Daredevil work with his extended run on the series and his retell of of the origin in Man Without Fear. I may cover those at some point, too. And maybe TDKR, if I can find something to say about it that hasn't already been discussed.
Is it sad Netflix brought me here? I am a huge DareDevil fan because of the Netflix original. Marvel Defenders ended with suggestions of a Born Again adaptation for season 3 of DareDevil. Maybe not page for page. It was thought that he died. But he wakes injured and wounded in a church. The Nun watching over him quickly calls to get Maggie.
Joshua Belmont Reese I heard they aren’t going to do it exactly like the book, I personally think it’ll be fine. Like imagine daredevil getting out of there broke up and then realize that he was out for a while, and that Karen sold him out? I think they can still do it.
It would've been perfect if Daredevil and the Kingpin had one final showdown in the final chapter. A rematch with epic Christian imagery would've been legendary
Born again is my favourite Daredevil story and I love your analysis on it. I haven't read it in a long time, but now I want to find it and read again after this video. And since you are offering to reviews other storylines, could you do a video on Dr Strange/Doom: Triumphant and Torment? It is the story of Dr Doom and Dr Strange, who travel to the depths of hell to rescue the soul of Doom's mother. It has themes of salvation and damnation, and the resolution is both triumphant and tragic for Doom. It is a fantastic story and one of my favourites.
Tao Jones T.jones Thanks! I LOVE Triumph and Torment. I've got a list of comics I'm planning on covering and that's on there, but your suggestion and thoughts on it have moved it up higher on the list!
My introduction to DD was this story line when it came out in '86. I was 13 or 14 then. Still have copies of the series that I like to re-read from time to time. In my opinion, the best get knocked down, get back up story in comics ever. The thought you put into this video, oh my gosh. I love the depth and layers of the story over the issues. But there is also a ton of psychological and theological aspects you brought up that I never thought about. Guess that means I'll have to read it again. :) Love your insights.
destinyawaitsx3 Honestly im worried the scene in the Defenders ending shows matt on the rebirth part of the story which if thats how they chose to start they already ruined
I don't think so. I wouldn't want them to copy every exact detail from the comic especially the order its in. That would make the season so predictable because it would be like reading the same comic all over again.
destinyawaitsx3 I know they won't the exact same plot but what made matt downfall made the rebirth scene do meninful if they gonna put that in without everything he passed throuth on born again the scene will be less inpactifull
Josh Likes To Play Yep, it seems like this will be the basis. I hope they can retain the spirit of this comic, even if they have to change elements of it to fit a season of the show.
Matt Draper I also hope that they change it up a bit so we can be surprised while still satisfied with what they took from the comics Here's how I think it will go: Now I'm guessing season 3 of Daredevil takes place after season 1 of The Punisher so we'll just go with that Karen Page (who was confirmed to star in The Punisher) is scared of the things Frank Castle did. She can't sleep, eat, or speak. She is told that heroin reduces stress, normally she would deny because she's smart but she is desperate for anything now, so she tries it out and becomes an addict. One day, still hyped up on drugs, she goes to the Bugle and doesn't know what to do for a story. Then, she remembers that she knows who Daredevil is (remember she's on drugs) and she decides to write a story about how she knows that Matt Murdock is Daredevil. Wilson Fisk, still in prison, hears about this and is shocked to find out that his two greatest enemies are the same person. He escapes prison and goes to Matt's apartment in search for him, he's not there. He blows up the apartment and leaves. Daredevil had waken up from his coma and has to leave, no matter how much the nuns say he must stay. He eventually leaves and finds his apartment in ruins and grieves. He finds out what happened by the news and goes to Karen's apartment. He finds her sobbing with empty packages of heroin on the ground and whiskey in her hand. Matt takes her to Foggy and they both get her a therapist. Foggy tells Matt that this needs this to stop and Daredevil can't keep his secret forever. Matt tells him that it's already too late for that and that he's no longer hiding. He tracks down Fisk and after a long struggle with him trying to find him and finding him but then getting away, he finally finds him. At this point, Matt has lost it. He just woke up from a coma and finds his house in flames, his girlfriend an addict, and his secret is now gone. And if you look up the teaser for Daredevil season 3, it shows a subway sign with the lights going out and sounds of Daredevil punching, when the lights turn on there is blood on the sign. This could mean that Daredevil's moral code has left him and he has resorted to murder. He kills Fisk's goons and catches up to Fisk. He is about to go on a helicopter to see Vanessa when Matt has a grenade from the goons earlier and blows up the helicopter. Fisk survives but isn't able to get off the ground before Matt gets on top of him and beats him over and over and over and over again, to the point of nearly killing him. He eventually tires himself out and goes unconscious. He is sent to a hospital and fixed up by Claire. But, with all the blood on his hands, the lawyer has become the suspect. After a scene in court with Matt as the suspect in handcuffs, he is pled guilty and locked in jail. Also, Bullseye is there because...season 4???
UPDATED THEORY: So now that the trailer has finally come out there are some things in my theory that I need changing So instead of Fisk breaking out of jail, he is released due to him being a "changed man" Also instead of Fisk going on the run, he will make Daredevil a public enemy Also it seems that Bullseye will be posing as Daredevil Also that line where Fisk tells Matt, "I will tell the entire city who you really are." This is probably after the public already knows Daredevil's identity but Fisk will make him a public enemy Everything else seems surprisingly likely to happen in season 3
It was already a series. Daredevil season 3 is basically Daredevil Born Again. It has sister Maggie and Kingpin learning Daredevil's identity and everything.
One of my favorite moments as a child when Matt stands in his destroyed apartment and deduces the identity of his enemy! I knew then that the path of salvation was open.
I discovered your TH-cam channel with this Inspiring video. When I read Daredevil Born Again, I was amazingly surprised. You brilliantly made an audiovisual anthropology of this Wonderful Graphic Novel and explore the reasons why Daredevil Born Again is one of the Best Marvel Comics storyline of All time. Keep going Bro.💯💯
Frank Miller was at the top of his game when he penned this masterpiece. I was initially disappointed that he did not provide the artwork, but time has shown that my disappointment was unwarranted, Mazzucchelli's images are powerful and blended seamlessly with Miller's writings. Easily the best Daredevil story of all time, "Born Again" has aged well and its impact continues to be felt. Oh, love your analysis, Matt. Thank you very much.
I'm knew to comics when does daredevil fight bullseye to the point where Karen dies. I got born again and can't find it, I wanted to check if it was the right one
Seeing Matt with blonde hair as opposed to his traditional red hair (or if you just watch the Netflix show, brown hair) is weird.. I love the character and definitely am going to read this
This is a great video that deserves more credit and was very well spoken, I will definitely collect these issues as a person who finds Daredevil influential and amazing
I think I just might be encouraged to get a marvel unlimited subscription to catch up on this story and the Mark Waid stuff and the Brian Bendis stuff. The more I hear and see these thoughtful videos on amazing stories from the Marvel universe the more I want to experience them for myself.
I wanted to see Karen at her lowest this season... too bad. She went through hell with Frank Castle, almost got bombed by a psycho war veteran, she killed one of Fisk's men, and just found out Murdock was Daredevil... and you have Fisk starting to find out that Murdock is Daredevil. This sets up everything for the Born Again story. I hope Fisk begins his rampage on Murdock in season 4 considering Murdock just beat him to a pile of rubble both physically and spiritually and revealed his identity. Once he gets Vanessa into a safe place, it's payback time. There's some kind of message you'd find so powerful in something like a Sam Raimie Spiderman movie trilogy that matches comic book story telling that you don't find in recent Marvel adaptations, even for this show. The closest I felt to a home hitting message about life was the Kandahar flashback in The Punisher series.
Great video. I wasn't raised Catholic or anything so a lot of the parallels to Jesus and such didn't hit with me when I read Born Again long ago. I'm going through a backlog of your videos and am enjoying the ride.
Man, this video gave me a new appreciation for the story. I really enjoy it, but I find that the climactic sequence is a bit overblown, with the Nuke and The Avengers showing up and all, when I think the bit where Matt saves everyone was more than enough to be the fitting conclusion to the story. But oh well. It's still a great story, even if I still prefer their other collaboration Batman: Year One.
Holy crap - fantastic rundown. I just saw the announcement for the new Daredevil show and found this video to catch up on the storyline. Great job - thank you!
@@Babytronians yeah I don’t understand why they’re redoing it. From what I understand the Netflix show is technically canon until it’s stated otherwise or disrupts other media… so yeah idk why they’re redoing the “Born Again” arc.
@@jamariojackson4289 Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful that somehow fate had worked out and we got that phenomenal season 3 and our boy finally made it to the MCU, interacting with Spider-Man. Fingers crossed they don’t “Disney” him too much like they did Fisk haha
@@Babytronians I don’t think so tbh, and tbf I didn’t have a problem with Kingpin like most people. My thing was, we saw him in two or three episodes versus the Defenders Saga three or so seasons combined. Charlie Cox is the best superhero. Daredevils 3 Netflix season are the best show I have watched. The punisher is amazing in season 2 and a interpretation of the born again story and bullseye in season 3 can't stop admiring the show
Brilliant analysis of the series! I bought it in hard back and have the originals and will recommend it to anyone who wants to see what comic books can do.
After much buildup, Daredevil Season 3 is out! Do you think it did justice in adapting Born Again?
Matt Draper I think it did a good job of mixing different storylines to create a good story

This is one of the best comic analysis videos ive ever seen. Incredibly entertaining all the way through, this is like my fourth time watching it lol
Who's here after the announcement of Daredevil: Born Again??
Wow. What a story. Great video Matt!!
I’m new to comics, this was my first and I freaking loved it
Wow...best coverage of the Born Again Saga I’ve seen so far...thank you!
Born Again is my go-to read when I'm in a deep rut. The fire splash page is enough to get your blood pumping & ready to go
I thought I was the only one lol
I'm A Catholic, And When I Watched The Series and Read the Comics, I learned that everyone can be redeemed as long as you live
Wow it was announced today that the series has been renewed with this name, and I got it in my recommended.
First time visiting your channel(3/26/23).You did a tremendous job in this video, keep up the good work!🙏🏻🎧
Who’s here after the big reveal with Born Again coming to Disney+?
I always come back to this video when I need a pick-me-up. Well done! Just got the book for Christmas and am excited to read through it myself.
Who else is here to prepare for the series?
I can't wait to see how Netflix's Daredevil takes on Born Again in Season 3.
destinyawaitsx3 Honestly im worried the scene in the Defenders ending shows matt on the rebirth part of the story which if thats how they chose to start they already ruined
Here after the announcement of the new daredevil show coming in 2024 with the icon Charlie cox. Hoping it’ll be the same scale as Netflix’s daredevil!
I just bought all these issues and read them. I didn’t realize the fetal position about the opening pages of the issues. Very cool, well done video.
It seems that elements of there will be elements of this storyline will be used in season 3 of Daredevil
That would be awesome!
Josh Likes To Play Yep, it seems like this will be the basis. I hope they can retain the spirit of this comic, even if they have to change elements of it to fit a season of the show.
Matt Draper I also hope that they change it up a bit so we can be surprised while still satisfied with what they took from the comics
Here's how I think it will go:
Now I'm guessing season 3 of Daredevil takes place after season 1 of The Punisher so we'll just go with that
Karen Page (who was confirmed to star in The Punisher) is scared of the things Frank Castle did.
Josh Likes To Play Wow! That would be great.
UPDATED THEORY: So now that the trailer has finally come out there are some things in my theory that I need changing
So instead of Fisk breaking out of jail, he is released due to him being a "changed man"
Also instead of Fisk going on the run, he will make Daredevil a public enemy
Also it seems that Bullseye will be posing as Daredevil
Also that line where Fisk tells Matt, "I will tell the entire city who you really are." This is probably after the public already knows Daredevil's identity but Fisk will make him a public enemy
Everything else seems surprisingly likely to happen in season 3
My favourite comic of all time. Just watching the scene here where Matt and Karen embrace brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful
So damn excited for Daredevil Born Again
Born Again is a masterpiece!
@Alex Svensek what makes it a masterpiece
now it's a series
9:37 “We can’t help but smile alon with them, hoping for a better journey for us all.”
Bullseye: “Haha don’t be sure about that.”
Oliver Dillon Guardian Devil
@@oliverdillon2458 you probably know it by now but its Kevin Smiths "Guardian Devil"
This is the best thing Frank Miller has ever made
Daredevil born again coming up in 2024
Thanks for video man that is why I love daredevil, he is man who is trying the right by God and that’s why I love the character so much
Watchmen,Batman the dark knights returns,Batman year one,Batman knight fall,And Daredevil born again. Are my favorite superhero comics of all time.
Who is here after sdcc 2022
Always a awesome hero
i really hope netflix does a good job on this
Amazing storyline
Who just saw the marvel post and came here lol
Seeing Matt with blonde hair as opposed to his traditional red hair (or if you just watch the Netflix show, brown hair) is weird.. I love the character and definitely am going to read this
I think it's supposed to still be red in the book. The printing just makes it look different than usual.
This is a great video that deserves more credit and was very well spoken, I will definitely collect these issues as a person who finds Daredevil influential and amazing
Your a fan of Horror and comics?!!! You my friend have good taste, and you have earned not only a subscriber, but my respect as well!
I think I just might be encouraged to get a marvel unlimited subscription to catch up on this story and the Mark Waid stuff and the Brian Bendis stuff. The more I hear and see these thoughtful videos on amazing stories from the Marvel universe the more I want to experience them for myself.
The music in this video is so good
amazing video great job
Keep up the analyzation on these comics! Very insightful!
Came here because of daredevil season 3. Can’t wait to see this story acted out onscreen.
Great video. I wasn't raised Catholic or anything so a lot of the parallels to Jesus and such didn't hit with me when I read Born Again long ago. I'm going through a backlog of your videos and am enjoying the ride.
Who's here after marvel announced daredevil in SDCC22
Matt Draper on Matt Murdock. 👍❤️
I've been seeing this name way too many times on the internet recently. Maybe it's the God's sign.
The only good man Fisk has ever known is Matt.
Fisk.
A Spider-Man villian.
Come on now, Frank Miller....
Such an amazing story! If you read it as it unfolded In the 80s this hits different. Where's my comic book OG's at ?
Such a heart touching comic am amazed. Matt salvation!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome video Matt please do more! :).
Gambit896 Thanks! New comic book video coming this Thursday.
work of art
...man this is a great channel
Hoping they apply some of this to the new series!!
That was beautiful man.😭
Matt!
you're video quality is always great and I love your focus on comics.
This one blew me away. Excellent analysis!
Mauricio Escobar Thank you! This comic means a lot to me, so I'm glad to hear that.
This was so good! Great job!
1 Peter 4:8 “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
If I remember right Kingpin tries to kill Matt in a car crash then when Matt survives Kingpin sends Nuke in to lure him out.
I wish last rites was a two partner to this story
And Nuke is replaced with Bullseye
Holy crap - fantastic rundown. I just saw the announcement for the new Daredevil show and found this video to catch up on the storyline. Great job - thank you!
They already did Born Again. It was the plot of season 3 of the original netflix show.
I just read Born Again. I watched this video months before, for some reason. I wish Marvel would do something like this again.
New Daredevil series is based off this.
@@jamariojackson4289 which is ridiculous, considering how well season 3 already accomplished that
@@Babytronians yeah I don’t understand why they’re redoing it.
That’s not enough for me to say they messed up his character fully, but from what I saw it was all the same.
@K August what did it do for you?
So glad I found your channel. You deserve more subs. Favourite comic would have to be Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run. Amazing from start to finish.
Thank you! I love Moore's Swamp Thing, as well. Possible video topic one day!
Great Video, Thanks.
Matt, What did you think of the Guardian Devil storyline? I loved it, myself. It honestly made me cry a few times.
Amazing Video! Congrats and sucess with the channel
Dingo Igret Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
