I was a staff member in the minors for 6 years. Players, trainers, and coaching staffs all rampantly use it in the minors and big leagues today. Even with the new rules and restrictions put in place, it’s not slowing down dipping at all. The paranoia of the MLB-sanctioned ‘Dip Police’ (as we called them) supposedly monitoring us at the games wouldn’t stop anyone from doing it. Players even dip on the field and in the dugouts during the game in the minors. The umps know it, and even they don’t enforce it. The 1st and 3rd base coaches do it. Scouts do it in the stands. It’s everywhere. In all 6 years, I only knew of one player that ever got fined for it by MLB. I did it all through college and in my 6 years working in the minors. After I recently left the game, I have quit. It’s easier to quit since I’m no longer in a clubhouse and dugout all day surrounded by an entire culture that still encourages it. I hope to see it end all together. But ultimately unless baseball keeps a dip police officer in the clubhouse and dugout every day all day, it is ultimately going to be up to the men who make up the ball club to phase it out completely. In my personal opinion, a grown man should have the freedom to make his own decision on the issue, especially when it’s your profession. However I do not encourage it.

@Chandler Russell There is literally no risk of cancer from chewing tobacco. Smoking there definitely is, but chewing is as safe as sucking on a lollipop or something. Dip got caught up in the whole war on smoking. You can look it up yourself. Even the couple of players with high profile cases of cancer (Gwynn) turned out to NOT be related to dip even though they thought it was.
From what im hearing now is that players can still dip and chew but they have to make an attempt to make it discrete which includes not leaving cans laying around the dugout where they can be seen and not having them in their pockets

Amos Otis smoked like a chimney in the Royals Dugout back in the day. I watched him with binoculars. Didn’t seem to slow him down on the bases and in center field. He was my favorite Royal. He played it cool, all the time.

DiMag could then maximize the drags he took until his time At Bat or three outs were recorded. DiMag DID die of cancer, but he also lasted into his mid 80s.
I'm much older than you. My buddy's dad invented batting gloves (Saranac) so we got to go down to the Brewers clubhouse, and there was a wall of chewing tobacco, and the Brewers guy told us to take some -- we were like 13 years old
i was the visiting clubhouse manager for a few years for a low a team and i remember running down to the field many times during batting practice telling the players that the dip police were in the home clubhouse making there way over to visiting side...it was like the 400m sprint in the olympics up the tunnel to the clubhouse

I worked in Minor League front offices a few years. Compliance officers would check the clubhouses a couple times a year. We always knew ahead of time and told the clubbie, who’d hide everyone’s paraphernalia. That was even more commonplace with the Padres affiliate I worked for (San Antonio).

Were the players who smoked actually good? I always assumed that the guys who did a bunch of stuff like that wouldn't be as good, especially with smoking and how that effects their lungs

But if you think cigarettes hinder athletes' performance, I'll just say if they're good - tobacco ain't gonna stop em. Tons of football (soccer) players smoke including some of the world's best like Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, Berbatov, etc
A couple of my buddies on my old AAU team would dip all the time. In one tournament we were playing in Delaware, our coach got in trouble for it, but the players didn’t, even though they were doing it in the dugout. It was weird because he wasn’t actually doing it during the game. He just had a tin in his back pocket. Our 2B was one of the guys doing it, and I remember him spitting out brown right in front of the field umpire. He didn’t do anything about it. The parents on our team noticed though and he was kicked off the team after the tournament. I think that as long as you’re 18, it should be okay because it’s not only a part of the game, it’s a part of some people’s lives, as nasty as I think it is.

I chewed for a loong time playing baseball. I finally quit when I was around 25. Then I started playing men's softball and my buddy got me going again. When I turned 28 or 29 I played in a 30+ baseball team and my catcher was in the Navy. He could get me a roll of Copenhagen, (6 or 8 cans - I forget now) for like $10. Every Sunday he had a new roll for me. Finally quit in my mid 40's. Starting up in a wood bat league, I hope to stay away from it. This was one tough monkey to get off my back.....kids...don't start.
Had several friends that played for Steve Yeager in the minors. They referred to the place in the dugout where he stood and smoked as the chimney. He even smoked while he was throwing BP.
I believe the MLB anti-smoking rule was created when former manager Jim Leyland was seen many times smoking on the bench during games. He complained at first, but eventually endorsed the rule.
I was a clubbie for a team in Short Season A back in the 90s. Tobacco was banned in the minors back in 92 or 93. The umpires had the authority to eject anyone they saw doing it, and the manager. Fines varied by by level. $300 AAA, $200 AA, $100 A, $50 A- & Rookie. The managers also said anyone ejected for tobacco would pay his fine. I never saw or heard of anyone ejected for tobacco violations. Some guys, especially relief pitchers would bring tins and pouches out to the field.
The reason dipping and chew is so prevalent in baseball goes back to the days of old when the playing fields especially the infield were alot more dusty and whatnot, and dipping/chew was a way to keep their mouths moist for the duration of the game. It just kind of stuck throughout the generations.
I played baseball from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. So for me I was around those who dipped tobacco as young as 11 years of age and I had my head coach that chewed tobacco but I think his gums started hurting him and so he had to stop. The reason why they would use it would be because when your out on the field your mouth starts to get dry and so it was something that would keep your mouth moist during the game. Me personally I never did any of it but these days there are players that will put sunflower seeds during the game but I just couldn't concentrate on the game while I have something in my mouth at the same time
Back in the 60s and 70s half the guys on most major league teams would have hoggers going during the game. Once in the 70s I was watching game of the week and the first base umpire had a big hogger in when a fly flew in his mouth and caused him to swallow it. Man did he haul ass into the dugout and out of sight before he barfed. 😃😃

I admit i used to dip during games. The worst memory i have is being stuck in 3d base and almost choking on it. I mean there i am on 3rd base and crowd is watching me spit and spit and spit. I finally quit tobacco for good
Matt I've always been curious in the dugouts their is always the big 5 gallon buckets of "THE BIGS SEEDS" I was curious are those filled with packs of seeds of is it just a bucket full seeds u just grab a handful? The other 1 is a rumor I heard but never seen I heard there is also 5 gallon buckets of "BIG LEAGUE CHEW GUM" the shredded strips of gum & also buckets full of "BAZOOKA GUM" always been curious about that! And if the buckets of the seeds aren't packs & just open do they just put the lid on and save for next game or do they dump them and refill ever game? Also does the team have to bring their own seed buckets and gum buckets (if the gum buckets exist) on the road or since its "THE BIGS SEEDS" company every stadium supplies both dugouts/bullpens? Seeds are individually packaged. And the gum is called "Double Bubble." Both buckets you see in the MLB dugouts can be purchased at Sam's Club. Whatever the team doesn't use that game, is saved for the next day.
In Massachusetts you can’t smoke or use tobacco ANYWHERE, except private property. Not on Boston sidewalks or public property; not in parks, and you get fined if you get caught. For some good old illegal taxation, every now and then metro cops-or even BPD-will walk around outside T (that’s just what we call it) stations and on public walkways and handout fines, that time of the month.

I kinda expected more. Ive talked to a lot of people that have told me hilarious stories about the names and concoctions players have made up. Like dip wrapped in tobacco leaf tied up with big league bubblegum and stuff. Tons of puking stories, etc...
I think stories about the minor leagues are infinitely more interesting than the majors because it's a world that many more people get to see than the majors. It's like this subculture that exists just in the peripheral of sports. And the only way to learn about it is to be a part of it. That's why I personally find it fascinating.
I like my cherry Skoal, I have forgotten to take it out once. We got called out to a house fire. Got there, got my mask on and realized “shit, forgot my dip in my mouth”!! 😂 😂.

Legally they have to, ever since big tobacco lost its lawsuits in the 90's all broadcasting had to take a negative stance on it and not promote it directly or indirectly.
So in the minors it seems like it was kind of like smoking in a no smoking area. So it’s likely there was no rule, but non smoking type state or federal regulations that disallowed tobacco in the arena. Like a fan could get fined as well.

You'd be surprised how many elite athletes smoke.
Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, all of them did cigarette ads back in the day. You should Google them, pretty interesting!

Had several friends that played for Steve Yeager in the minors. They referred to the place in the dugout where he stood and smoked as the chimney. He even smoked while he was throwing BP.

I would like to see a video on the origins on why baseball players dip and how it all got started
I believe the MLB anti-smoking rule was created when former manager Jim Leyland was seen many times smoking on the bench during games. He complained at first, but eventually endorsed the rule.
Jim Leyland when he managed with the Detroit Tigers a few years ago could be seen smoking in the dugout every once in a while.
I watched Bobby Cox light up during a game and 20 minutes later put in a dip of chew.
Leyland would take one step into the tunnel to smoke; he could still see most of the field from there...
I was a clubbie for a team in Short Season A back in the 90s. Tobacco was banned in the minors back in 92 or 93. The umpires had the authority to eject anyone they saw doing it, and the manager. Fines varied by by level. $300 AAA, $200 AA, $100 A, $50 A- & Rookie. The managers also said anyone ejected for tobacco would pay his fine. I never saw or heard of anyone ejected for tobacco violations. Some guys, especially relief pitchers would bring tins and pouches out to the field.

The reason dipping and chew is so prevalent in baseball goes back to the days of old when the playing fields especially the infield were alot more dusty and whatnot, and dipping/chew was a way to keep their mouths moist for the duration of the game. It just kind of stuck throughout the generations.
I played baseball from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. So for me I was around those who dipped tobacco as young as 11 years of age and I had my head coach that chewed tobacco but I think his gums started hurting him and so he had to stop. The reason why they would use it would be because when your out on the field your mouth starts to get dry and so it was something that would keep your mouth moist during the game. Me personally I never did any of it but these days there are players that will put sunflower seeds during the game but I just couldn't concentrate on the game while I have something in my mouth at the same time

Back in the 60s and 70s half the guys on most major league teams would have hoggers going during the game. Once in the 70s I was watching game of the week and the first base umpire had a big hogger in when a fly flew in his mouth and caused him to swallow it. Man did he haul ass into the dugout and out of sight before he barfed. 😃😃

I admit i used to dip during games. The worst memory i have is being stuck in 3d base and almost choking on it. I mean there i am on 3rd base and crowd is watching me spit and spit and spit. I finally quit tobacco for good

What are the rules on fantasy baseball?
Matt I've always been curious in the dugouts their is always the big 5 gallon buckets of "THE BIGS SEEDS" I was curious are those filled with packs of seeds of is it just a bucket full seeds u just grab a handful? The other 1 is a rumor I heard but never seen I heard there is also 5 gallon buckets of "BIG LEAGUE CHEW GUM" the shredded strips of gum & also buckets full of "BAZOOKA GUM" always been curious about that! And if the buckets of the seeds aren't packs & just open do they just put the lid on and save for next game or do they dump them and refill ever game? Also does the team have to bring their own seed buckets and gum buckets (if the gum buckets exist) on the road or since its "THE BIGS SEEDS" company every stadium supplies both dugouts/bullpens? Seeds are individually packaged. And the gum is called "Double Bubble." Both buckets you see in the MLB dugouts can be purchased at Sam's Club. Whatever the team doesn't use that game, is saved for the next day.

In Massachusetts you can’t smoke or use tobacco ANYWHERE, except private property. Not on Boston sidewalks or public property; not in parks, and you get fined if you get caught. For some good old illegal taxation, every now and then metro cops-or even BPD-will walk around outside T (that’s just what we call it) stations and on public walkways and handout fines, that time of the month.

My HS baseball coach chewed Copenhagen and swallowed the juice after they made tobacco illegal on school property.

I'm a huge Rangers fan and there is no way that is true AT ALL. Maybe in the 70's or something but not in the 2000's. He would never have gotten away with that.

I remember as a kid watching minor league games, a lot of adults were smoking right in the stands.
I kinda expected more. Ive talked to a lot of people that have told me hilarious stories about the names and concoctions players have made up. Like dip wrapped in tobacco leaf tied up with big league bubblegum and stuff. Tons of puking stories, etc...

I think stories about the minor leagues are infinitely more interesting than the majors because it's a world that many more people get to see than the majors. It's like this subculture that exists just in the peripheral of sports. And the only way to learn about it is to be a part of it. That's why I personally find it fascinating.

Legally they have to, ever since big tobacco lost its lawsuits in the 90's all broadcasting had to take a negative stance on it and not promote it directly or indirectly.
So in the minors it seems like it was kind of like smoking in a no smoking area. So it’s likely there was no rule, but non smoking type state or federal regulations that disallowed tobacco in the arena. Like a fan could get fined as well.
I've also heard the is a lot of "prescription" adderall usage in MLB. True?
