Definitely a lot of options. Something to keep in mind, if you're just a fan of retro games, and by retro I mean primarily 2D pre 1998 stuff, any of the mentioned sub $70 devices will work wonderfully. You definitely don't need to spend more than $70 for retro emulation.

@@Josh-lq5rw I probably wouldn't even recommend a Miyoo Mini at this point. The new Mini + has replaced the original because they ran out of parts to make the original. That feeling when you were trying to figure out what kind of device you needed and now you have Mioo mini, RG353m, retroid pocket 3+, steam deck and PSP
@@ItsLarsGjo hm, If I were a judge, I would award 7.5 points to the rg353 and 6 to the retroid poket. In corporate handhelds. While you did mention the Vita. You should have also brought up the PSP as those are well built, emulates as much as the cheap linux handhelds, also has PSP games, and can be found as cheap or cheaper in the used market. The PSP was so good it still holds up today if you want to play older retro games.
This is now my favorite gaming Channel! I literally agree with everything you stated. Retroid pocket 3 was my go to until the Logitech arrived at my door. now I cannot put it down!
Thanks for your work. I knew nothing about retro handhelds until a few months ago, and it was your last "Guide to Handhelds" video you made. Getting these in South Africa is simply too expensive, so thanks for letting me, and many others, play and collect vicariously. Also! I love the low key Miyoo Plus reveal! Can't wait for your thoughts
Can we all just agree that the Retroid Pocket 3+ is so appealing? Like, I couldn't resist at that price and ordered one just based on the beautiful design and color schemes + the fact that it's literally an android device with eye candy controllers built in and I currently have an iPhone. And they just recently did a firmware update that improves the GameCube performance so now I can imagine that it will get even better in the following months. And if they release a Retroid Pocket 4 in the next few months and it looks similar but with improved performance for $200 or so I'll still buy it. Even if it's upwards of $300 as long as I can run most GameCube games flawlessly I'll be super happy especially if the battery life is anything like 6+ hours.
Russ, I just want to say thank you for all that you do for the community. I bought my first handheld before being introduced to your channel, but all of the information you put out is excellent.
Been following this channel and scene for the past couple years and it's been an awesome hobby. First purchase was the RG351M followed by a Kishi 1st gen for the Android phone. Then got a RP2+. The three I've settled on since stem from 3 categories. The Steam Deck, RP3+, and Miyoo Mini. I have trouble seeing a better 3 device combo right now. Covers power, portable, and pocket. I haven't had much desire to buy since I get this set but sure something else will come along. Probably the steam deck 2 and rp4, lol.
For anyone who’s on the fence or unsure, I can HIGHLY recommend the Miyoo Mini Plus with Onion OS as your first handheld emulator or even to add to your collection!
I order edthe Retroid Pocket 3+ back in November and it definitely didn't disappoint. I've even been using it as a Twitch streaming device for retro gaming up to PSP. The ability to play some Game Cube, PS2, and PS Vita just feels like a bonus feature.
Mostly I use my phone (OnePlus 9) and with a Razr Kishi and Android emulator apps. I really like Drastic for DS and Pizzaboy pro for GBA. I really like the simplicity of having everything on one device and getting more gaming out of my phone without having to worry about using data or getting ads during my games
In the last few weeks binge watching most all your stuff, I've come away with an Anbernic RG353M (which I've since returned) and a Steam Deck. I'm hooked!
Thank you russ for your honesty and impartialness, one of the few people I trust on TH-cam, and I was glad you supported your friend about his new album, This is really nice of you
Thanks for inspiring my to pick up my first handheld (the RG Nano), and by proxy, upload my first TH-cam video. I noticed that no one had mentioned that the RG Nano had a custom firmware available, so I made a video showing how to install it and went over a few things it did. The CFW has since been updated, so my video needs an update itself, but I've seen a lot of support for it. I just wanted to thank you for everything you're doing to keep this wonderful hobby alive, and hopefully one day, maybe we can meet and play a round or two in Street Fighter or something.
I bought an retroid pocket 3+ a few weeks ago and am happy with it :) It fits what i need for the moment. In 1-2 years i may update. Anyways, your channel is amazing :D
First off, nice street fighter shirt! Second, pretty informative guide and the music was also a nice touch. I personally don’t own any linux devices like the miyoo mini, though it would be nice to have a gameboy shaped device. Handheld pcs like the Ayn Neo 2 are too rich for my blood, but maybe in the future we’ll have a more affordable windows based handheld. Keep these helpful videos coming!
Your videos have turned me into a bit of a retro handheld collector (I have a Anbernic RG351M, RG35XX, RG353V, Retroid Pocket 2+ and 3+, an Ayn Odin Pro and a Steam Deck, among a few others). They're all pretty good (and a far cry from the Dingoo A320 I bought a decade ago when dedicated retro handhelds weren't really a thing), but the Odin is still my favorite - it feels the best in the hand and it plays a surprising amount of stuff (even a decent amount of Gamecube/PS2 stuff) for the price.
@@ivanuribe6855 Short of something like a Steam Deck, the Ayn Odin is probably the best device for that. Not every game runs perfectly, but there's a community guide (Retro Game Corps' website has a link) that should give you a rough idea of what compatibility is like. I've been playing Tales of Symphonia, and even the NTSC version works perfectly fine. If you're willing to step up to something like the Steam Deck, it will run just about anything Gamecube and Wii related with no issues.
I just ordered the retroid pocket 3+ the other day and I'm really excited to get it and play it. It will emulate most of the things I want to play anyways and it doesn't cost a fortune. It's a win win in my book :)
Just bought a Miyoo Mini Plus because of your channel. It's on its way. I own a Steam Deck, and I've done a little bit of emulation there. But having a small device that's much more pocket friendly will be handy for when it's impractical to bring out the steam deck will be so nice! I would've loved to get a Miyoo Mini, but it seems like I'm a little late on the game there. Thanks for all the entertaining content! I look forward to all the new devices that will be released, and your reviews of them.
Thank you Russ for consistent 10/10 quality in every video you make. I got into handhelds because of your videos. Your work adds tremendous value to this community.
I’m all about the mini PC dedicated handheld scene, but you just can’t beat that steam decks price for performance sweet spot. I got the mid spec option as I wasn’t sold on the anti-glare screen but wanted that SSD. I’ll probably end up putting a bigger one in there sometime down the road.
I started tuning into your videos during the early days of your reviews, and you haven't steered me wrong. I'm absolutely loving the look and concept of the latest Anbernic; the 405 just looks amazing. Unfortunately, I won't be able to afford it for a bit and my last anbernic was stolen -- pesky thieves. But fingers crossed for the future. Keep up the great work man!
I just pulled the trigger on a steam deck, and some of this channels content helped in that decision. The deck being such an open platform lends itself to a wide range of uses beyond gaming. While the battery life isnt the greatest compared to the other handhelds, that it can run off a battery at all and recharge off usb puts it above PCs in other use cases including emergencies or low power living.
Had a Vita for 7 years, modded it last year, with your Vita modding instructions, and i've just ordered a steam deck, should be able to play a good mix of stuff 👍
Hey Russ! I absolutely love your reviews, they always go really in-depth of the devices. Currently I'm considering on getting a New Nintendo 2/3DS XL to jailbreak and mod, but I'm not fully sure yet. I'd love to see you review a modded 3DS like that, like the Review to the jailbroken Vita a while ago. There are some Reviews on TH-cam, but none picture all the Pros and Cons like you do, with all the capable Emulators etc. Greetings and much love from Germany 💜
If it helps I'm using an o3dsxl and it's pretty good overall. Installing cfw is super easy and safe (though in the n3ds' the SD card is inside the console which might be a bit of a hassle). Make sure you get a NEW 3ds and not an old/original one. I got the latter on Amazon by mistake because I didn't know that by "new" they meant a generation and not just one that wasn't used by anyone. In the n3ds you can also change the shell which is pretty neat. As for what it can play I recommend just looking for the full list on Reddit
@@omersharon7847 Yeah I'm looking at the New 3DS or 2DS XL. The shell swapping option is cool, but considering the 2DS XL is cheaper and has the SD card outside I'm leaning more towards that at the moment. Where can I find that list? What's the Subreddit called? Just r/3DS?
@TheMarslMcFly As long as the 2ds can run all the games the 3ds can, I would totally go for it. I barely use the 3ds function as it just gives me a headache after a short while. Look for r/3dshacks

i own the retriod pocket 3+ for emulation up to playstation 2 (Aethersx2 was the most stable emulator for me with no problems so far compared to the previous PCSX) on the go and the steam deck for games like cyber punk and fordza horizon, and some PS3 emulation on longer shifts at one place while at work. i really like that i can finally play Monster hunter portable 3rd with it being 90% translated to english by the community for the first time on the go. thanks for giving these devices some spotlight, i appreciate your content on these and im looking forward to the future of emulation with your channel.
For me, I own both a Steam Deck and an Ayn Odin Lite and they compliment eachother very well. My Steam Deck is for PC games when I got enough time to relax somewhere and play comfortably for an hour or more, and my Odin Lite is for emulation, longer trips or even a short session with it's amazing battery life, and easy portability. Plus the 1080p and better colors of the Odin Lite screen makes me *only* want to play Retro games on it, I never emulate on my Steam Deck. I feel like I'm "wasting potential" if I do so, so many other devices can emulate games just fine. I would probably emulate more if Dolphin actually properly worked
As a retro game enthusiast, I'd recommend the Retroid Pocket 2+. Not only does it have great power but also costs only $99 (the same price as an anbernic rgxxxx can't remember the model). It emulates some of the tougher consoles like GameCube and Dreamcast and even the 3DS (somewhat). I'd say its an A on my retro list. It is an excellent example of retro gaming handhelds.
Unfortunately Retroid stopped selling the 2+ (I assume as they focus more on the 3/3+ devices), and so now it's quite expensive elsewhere (about $140 on Amazon). And so at that price the more powerful RP3+ starts to make more sense for just a little bit more.
Been watching a lot of your videos, first regarding the Vita and now i'm on the brink of buying a Retroid Pocket 3+. All are very informative, good to follow and have made the step into modding/hacking and setting up a device a lot less intimidating. thanks for that. (Nice to have a face with the voice now).
I watched all your videos just before I decided to by my RG35xx. Your guide also help me set it up since I had no prior experience to emulation. I love your videos and I hope you keep doing what you're doing!!
I have been looking at these over the past few weeks wanting to try one out. Needless to say, looking at Amazon and knowing nothing about these devices is confusing. Thanks so much, your videos helped me make a far better informed decision. Going to try out the RG353M.
Thank you so much Russ. I always look to your videos when it comes to anything and everything retro and handheld. Sometimes it seems daunting when shopping for a good handheld. I’m so glad you’re out there guiding the masses🙏🏼
I've been watching this channel for a bit trying to decide on a device. Then one day I came across a phone clip for my xbox controller. I realized my phone is pretty new so I tested it up to GameCube and it runs great. So, having already owned the phone and controller, I spent 10 bucks on the clip and stuffed my phone with emulators and roms. These all look fun but if you have a powerful enough phone you can accomplish the same thing as many of the mid range models for significantly less. That being said if you have the extra scratch and want that experience in a separate device, this is the channel to watch.
This channel is the reason I now have a wishlist a mile long and a weird android console that I spend more time tinkering with than my PC lately Thanks
I was getting into handheld gaming because my back is starting to hurt from all the years spent gaming on a desktop, but ever since I saw how everything is easily emulated on the Steam Deck (even some lighter PS3 games run flawlessly on it) and how the software is advancing rapidly, I didn't think about spending my money on anything else. The Steam Deck is cheap, easy to setup, and can do basically everything. I'll only run my desktop for AAA games that are hard to run.
Thanks for thee video. I am not new, but I tend to watch most of your videos anyway. One other device I'd mention is the Evercade. It's for users who want to physically own the games they play. The downside is that your limited to owning the games that have been released so far. You also obviously have to buy the games though they're pretty cheap. You'll get a cartridge for like 20$ that will have 6-12 ish games on it. My favorites are the rg353, the evercade, and a gba with an ips screen mod. Cheers.
Great stuff man.. You always have a comprehensive video for anything. Really you are one of the best creators for the gaming / retro gaming community. Thanks for that..
I really enjoy my Powkiddy V90 just for GB, GBA games. It has some audio problems and sometimes slows down but they are playable. I would like it if they improved the hardware and the build quality a little with a better aspect ratio for better scaling.
Loved the video and music. One thing that would be useful is to give some perspective for these devices. I think your whole point of view would use these handhelds as a standalone console. I think that an ayaneo 2 or GPD win 4 can fully replace a pc with a dock and eGPU, this is something unique to x86, like android handheld can play the android ecosystem scams (I mean, "games")
handhelds are great..... but i was immediately distracted by the music. the album is fire. Our Ghosts is killing it! Thank you for including the bandcamp links :D (AND, its beautiful to see artists still doing beautiful things with the creative commons license)
I’ve commented on some of your videos asking about best options for my budget. Finally bought the RP3+ yesterday… now I have to be patient with the long wait for it to arrive!
I don't get much time to game so investing in one of these handhelds seems like a luxury. That said I recently bought a cheap bluetooth clamp controller and slapped it on the midrange phone (moto g stylus) that I bought 2 years ago for $200. The controller looks great and feels fairly good in most regards and my phone is strong enough to play PS1 games at 2X resolution while maintaining a good framerate.
@Retro Game Corps- wow, you really made this clear and easy to understand. This space has gotten over saturated very quickly so its not to have some easy to follow info. Thanks again! Subbed

Very happy with my Logitech g cloud. Does everything I need. The streaming on a good internet is almost flawless and gives you triple a games and emulation coming from your xbox, ps5 , and PC. Battery life and screen are amazing.
Sad to see the 353v not in the list of Android devices.... Such a great device and very pocketable.... I know we had to cut down some devices for the sake of time and the rp3+ is technically a much better unit for only around 40 more dollars. Hopefully anbernic releases another vertical handheld with better specs this year!
Rad man. Might also be worth covering cloud PCs as it saved me a ton of up front cost in the x86 category. I’m using Shadow PC on my iPhone for $30/month + $100 for a Backbone controller (lowest input latency) and I’m cycling between Hogwarts Legacy for PC, PCSX2 and Citra and they all run flawlessly. Only caveat so far is you need to be on Wi-Fi or have very strong cell service
@@OHCAM5whatever it cost to play on a normal PC is what it will cost on your shadow PC. It looks and behaves like a windows desktop, you just access it remotely from a smartphone or other device
In my country Syria, we have been suffering from earthquakes since the 6th of February, yet your channel has been my sanctuary. I have watched your videos over and over again which made me really lose the tension. Thank you so much for what you are doing. I have a question for you. Is there a way to play ps3 games and Xbox 360 games on any of the handhelds consoles? And if yes how much does this console cost? Pray for us 🇸🇾☮️
Hi Ahmen, I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. For PS3 and Xbox 360, those are difficult to emulate, and so only the high-end handheld PCs will run those systems, so something like the GPD Win 4 or the AYANEO 2. Those start at about $900 USD, so definitely not cheap!
I would like to thank my PSP for being my primary retro handheld during my teens. Steam Deck is definitely my top choice. I don't play on handheld devices that often, and I do like its capabilities and storage options.
Totally agree with everything about this video. I have long used Linux to make retro gaming machines, but playing them on a handheld like the Miyoo Mini(+) and the RG353XX make a lot of sense. The Steam Deck is the way to go for X86. I feel even if you have the money, it doesn't make feasible sense to pay 200-300% more for, what, 25% better performance. Regarding compatibility, using Steam Link on a Steam Deck connected to a PC resolves some of the compatibility issues.
imo using your phone is all you need for emulating old games especially for ds and 3ds the aspect ratio is perfect and most phones can emulate up to ps2 and wii
As somebody who has dabbled in emulation on old phones and tablets back in the day but rarely messed with any of this stuff, you’ve taught me so much my friend. Thank you. I recently wanted to play all my old gameboy and GBA games and was holding out for an Analogue Pocket but gave up on waiting and decided to get the Retroid Pocket 3+ and I gotta say it has taken all of my gaming time up once I got my library loaded in. I even got into psp games since I never had one. My PS5 is collecting dust because I’m so obsessed with my retroid. It even fits in my front pocket.

And not because of the difference in performance, the retroid will win here, but because after buying the rg353 I felt like I bought a gaming console, and after buying the retroid I felt like I bought a tool that needs to be tuned for results.
@@gm__rock can you go into more detail on how the 353m felt more like a console and the rp3+ needed tweaking?
Fantastic introductory video. A No-frills welcome to the retro handheld world!! :)
I was browsing through Amazon to check portable consoles, not knowing which to buy... and then this video popped on my TH-cam feed. Man, are you God?
In the last few weeks binge watching most all your stuff, I've come away with an Anbernic RG353M (which I've since returned) and a Steam Deck. I'm hooked!
Thank you russ for your honesty and impartialness, one of the few people I trust on TH-cam, and I was glad you supported your friend about his new album, This is really nice of you
The RGB10 still getting a shout out in 2023!! Great taste Russ, I still use mine every day
Also wow this album kicks
Hey I want to play strictly GameCube games what hand held device will do it best from your knowledge?
@@ivanuribe6855 Short of something like a Steam Deck, the Ayn Odin is probably the best device for that. Not every game runs perfectly, but there's a community guide (Retro Game Corps' website has a link) that should give you a rough idea of what compatibility is like. I've been playing Tales of Symphonia, and even the NTSC version works perfectly fine. If you're willing to step up to something like the Steam Deck, it will run just about anything Gamecube and Wii related with no issues.
@@ivanuribe6855 I myself have been using my steam deck docked for it. Playing Twilight Princess on it lately and it's a ton of fun.

I remember watching your video about this topic in 2021. I ended up getting the Anbernic RG351MP and didnt regret it! Since then ive been a loyal fan!
I'm newbie and just bought 3 devices recently. Addicted to this ❤
I’m all about the mini PC dedicated handheld scene, but you just can’t beat that steam decks price for performance sweet spot.
That's a great idea 👍

Taking a break from building out my Steam Deck using your written guide to watch your newest TH-cam video. Life is good!
i own the retriod pocket 3+ for emulation up to playstation 2 (Aethersx2 was the most stable emulator for me with no problems so far compared to the previous PCSX) on the go and the steam deck for games like cyber punk and fordza horizon, and some PS3 emulation on longer shifts at one place while at work. i really like that i can finally play Monster hunter portable 3rd with it being 90% translated to english by the community for the first time on the go. thanks for giving these devices some spotlight, i appreciate your content on these and im looking forward to the future of emulation with your channel.
Thanks for sharing the music. Always loved the music in your intro!
Just bought an RG35XX after watching one of your videos. Cant wait for it to com! Thanks for all of your content and guides!
This channel is the reason I now have a wishlist a mile long and a weird android console that I spend more time tinkering with than my PC lately
Thanks
I just picked up an RG353M last week but still watched the video for all the good information
Bit late but you can use steam link to play with ur steam deck while u sitting on the couch or sth
@@ienthanh5998 I know but I prefer to look at my 4k144Hz screen when I play rtx aaa titles
great mentioning the music, your friend is a great artist.
love the intro song.
I appreciate that!
The GOAT, thanks for all you do, you're a great inspiration and I hope one day to be even a bit as good as you!
I own retroid pocket 2+, new 3ds xl, ps vita and a logitech g cloud. Theres something to love about all of them.
Loving your buddies music ! Added to the playlist. And your videos ofcourse
I really enjoy my Powkiddy V90 just for GB, GBA games. It has some audio problems and sometimes slows down but they are playable. I would like it if they improved the hardware and the build quality a little with a better aspect ratio for better scaling.
Hey Russ! Thank you so much for the videos. Picked up an Ambernic RG353M last week and it's been my primary gaming device since. Loving it.
Just got a RG35XX because of you and Wulff Den, thank you! I will be using your guide to upgrade it!
Incredible video! So good summary of a big rabbit hole in just 18 minutes. So happy to have found your channel
Ahh, the smooth stylings of Retro Russ. Looking forward to the Miyoo Mini+ review!
Thank you for including the bandcamp links :D

Thank you! Out of nowhere videos for these things started popping up on my feed. I was so curious but didnt know where to even start. This helped.
Good morning Russ thank you for your new video I always appreciate them you always do a awesome job on them
I’ve commented on some of your videos asking about best options for my budget.
Amazing work once again! Can't wait to see what kind of hardware will be released in 2023!
I got started all because of this video. Still trying to get mame working on the 405. But, things are awesome.

First of all... thank you for your service!! Your video are always awesome! Thank you for taking your time to record and upload your videos!!
Very happy with my Logitech g cloud. Does everything I need. The streaming on a good internet is almost flawless and gives you triple a games and emulation coming from your xbox, ps5 , and PC. Battery life and screen are amazing.
Love this site, as someone that had a 3g vita from launch this site has been a god send for emulation. Keep up the good work!
wow just strated researching into this handheld gaming you are a legend good sir
Some of the tunes definitely slap, adding to my Spotify!

You ever think about a Dark Mode intro? That bright flash bang gets me every time lol
I love your friends music btw
May consider this
As somebody who has dabbled in emulation on old phones and tablets back in the day but rarely messed with any of this stuff, you’ve taught me so much my friend.
