- Oh my!!! I did NOT expect this.... I put the brand the new Taylormade Qi10 Max 2024 driver with a $850 autoflex shaft against a stock shaft.. and well, it is safe to say I DID not expect to see the results I did. In this video we settle the argument of is an UPGRADED expensive rare $850 shaft any better than a STOCK shaft that you just take off the shelf? I put this to the test! Not only testing these shafts in a normal 2024 driver head but I place this $850 shaft in a Taylormade Qi10 MAX driver one of the most forgiving drivers of 2024! We often think that just spending more money is the way to get more consistent and hit the golf ball longer and straighter but compared to a stock driver shaft in a taylormade Qi10 max does this rare expensive shaft go and long and is it any more consistent?
We put to the test a Kali blue golf shaft from Mitsubishi Kali Blue Shaft up against a AUTO FLEX golf shaft a very rare version of this! what would you do would you go for the expensive shaft? Lets hit 5 golf balls with each and see on a fair test using the exact same Taylormade Qi10 max driver head which golf ball goes the longest and the most consistent. I Put a $850 AUTOFLEX Shaft In The Qi10 MAX DRIVER VS STOCK SHAFT...HOLY MOLY. I TESTED this $850 shaft VS STOCK & these are the RESULTS This $850 DRIVER SHAFT is NOT what you think...VS STOCK SHAFT

*How about this combination…is the outcome worth the money in your opinion?*
I think it was. I play a lot of tight courses, and penalties can really kill a round. For me, it wasn't so much about distance but knowing that I have a good level of forgiveness. For that, I feel it was worth the money. I am hoping it will be the final thing to let me see the 70's.
Without reducing the head weight there won’t be much difference, so I’m not sure ‘this’ experiment will prove much. But if you switch out the head weight to a lighter one, to get the head weight to about 183-184g you will see a difference. It’s just a different way of setting up a driver.
Nope, for the price of the shaft you could get an analysis of your swing and a few lessons that would gain you those 15yds you are looking for.
With my TSi2 being in poor condition, it would be like putting lipstick on a pig 😂
When he says “final ball away” at 12:38, the ball’s on a white tee, then there’s a frame cut and when he takes the driver away the ball’s on an orange tee. 😂
Hahaha nice catch!
Yeah as i was about to hit it the tripod blew off so i had to re-take the shot, well noticed! ⭐️
Seemed more like maybe it just took a couple tries to get that one longer ball for the comparison’s sake haha, cause it didn’t seem like there was a breath of wind. Either way, just fun catching stuff like that. 🤙
Busted! Haha
I came here to say this, glad someone else noticed. Whenever someone says something like that in a video I always pay close attention to the details and love when they fudge it.
I just bought that shaft this year, and I played about 20 rounds with it. What I noticed is on perfect impact it is about 10-15 yards longer, so that might not be great, but where it really seems to shine is on off-center strikes. It seems to keep ball speed and line fairly well even from toe or heel.
The Pro at my local course several years ago fitted himself with the Autoflex shaft, he first tried it in his gamer driver head 10.5 neutral setting , and like you to much spin and just a steady 3-5 yard gain. He then tried the low spin head of the same model but a 9 degree head set standard/neutral and that was the winner. There was still moderate trajectory. low spin and a steady 15 plus yard gain and still very good dispersion. The guy is a real player and a damn fine teaching pro, he says this shaft stays in the bag. So yes, try the low spin model. Great video, thank you.
I got my AutoFlex a couple years ago now. I had it fitted by a world class fitter - the loft and choice of head were tuned to the shaft. With that combo I was carrying the ball to where it had previously rolled out to. An average of 20 yards more. Oh, and a lot more in the fairway too. Win-win.
Awesome post. Did you get to choose the head? Or were you fairly limited by what they could get into the correct swing weight range?
@@Kylez1212 The fitter and I went through a number of heads. It was at TXG (now Club Champion) in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. We ended up with a Cobra Speedzone in 9° loft.
That 301 yarder is all you need to know. Set it at the recommended swing weight and drop the loft to 8.5 and see what you get. Most of these TH-camrs are making the same mistake that Rick Shiels made when he reviewed it. NOT FOLLOWING THE MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS.
Spot on! Iv gamed autoflex since it came out and with each new head I put it in there is a lot of setup to do with swing weight. Think it would be difficult to get the Qi10max down to D0. I really didn’t like adding weight to the grip end.
100%, I had to bugger about with my SF505x for a few days with weights and different grips (light vs slightly heavier) to really get the most out of it
Ah right, best do that then! thanks :)
Great comment !!! I would add that also trying a cheap shaft with the same weight and bend profile as the Autoflex would be prudent before parting with a bucket full of money.
@@DuxburyParkGolfClub-rr3bcyeah, need a swing weight around D0/D1 with that shaft. Not sure of the head weight in the Qi10. But I bet it’s close to 197grams and puts theSW too high per manufacturers recommendations
In my humble opinion I think the price is worth the ease of use while getting the same number. I play a ventus black tr 60s and to me it feels normal. But if I hit the autoflex then go back to the ventus I will probably notice I'm working a lot harder to get the same number. I'm coming off or still have frozen shoulder on both shoulder and honestly this is something I'm considering unless I get much better in 1 month before the season starts ha😂!
I’ve played an Autoflex SF 405 in a Titleist TSR1 head for a couple years. It is 46 inches, D 2 SW (with a lighter weight in the head). I can honestly say it is the longest, straightest driver I have ever played (and I’m 76 years old and have played golf for over 66 years)! I am still a scratch player with 95 mph club speed. I don’t know how this thing works but I am about 15 yds longer carry than any other shaft (and I’ve tried a lot of them). Like several of the commenters have stated, it is imperative that you play this shaft at 46 inches and D0-D2 SW to get maximum performance.
I've gamed the AutoFlex for a few years now, ,oe it. Recently put some FreeFlex shafts in the driver and 3w, and they are also dynamite! Being an older gentleman now, I need the extra speed I get from this style of shaft. For example, I am 3-5 mph quicker with the FreeFlex vs any stock offering, or my Ventus TR Blue etc.. Every little bit helps when trying to cling to that precious youth 😆
So you spent 600/shaft for 10 yards? Speed training could’ve gotten you that for free! Just watch some Bryson DeChambeau videos! I’m mid 50s did the speed training he showed and picked up nearly 10 MPH, and that was FREE!
I’ve used Autoflex 405 in my Driver the last couple of years and love it . I did have to play around with rear head weight , and it now plays D0 swing weight. Also play 405 in my 3 wood 👍
I've been testing an autoflex 505XX in a TSR2 8 head and to get the benefit you really should play it over length. Mine is at 46". Playing at 46" with a lighter weight in the head I was getting my ss up decimal points above 115, when I was about 105-108 since golf season ended in the US. Ball speed went up above 165 as well when I was usually about 157-159. I didn't pay retail for the shaft, so I don't know if it's worth the retail price tag, but it can def up the swing and ball speed. I can't wait to get into midsummer form and see what numbers I can get.
Have had the blue in my Qi10 for about 2 weeks now. Out of the gate I noticed how consistent the kick was between the on course and the 100% swings on the range. I have the 70x model. I don’t have to over-swing/change my setup to get the shaft to perform. Carry and total are consistent even at 118-122 club head speeds. Enough spin and launch to sit and stop in the 300-320 range i expect out of driver.
Kaili Blue is a breath of fresh air. I have tried too many hzrdus/tour AD/ventus/tensei shafts to count. This thing is smooth, consistent and easy to hit. It is also a “stock” option on TM’s website and maybe 250 to get from non OEM’s (I can’t speak on this price, didn’t do my research). Give it a try!
Love my AF! I’ve hit my longest most consistent drives with it. Arccos had me at +3.2 strokes gained off the tee for two months. Dropped 4 shots off my index. It’s paired with a stealth plus 8* set down to 7.25 @ 46”. Swing weight is D4.2 which is obviously higher than recommended but it works. 12-14launch, 2200 spin and AOA is 4-5.5 up. It just goes where you point it.
To justify the price to me, it's got to add 300 yards to my drives. That way, I can finally hit a 460 yard drive.
I love when a review is honest, don't blow bubbles to keep maker happy, you did that, thanks Alex.
Don't like the color, looks like the graphics usually used on female shafts...and it's flexible, regular at best, [probably between regular and senior , you were able to control that flex, peeps like myself don't have that skill.
The reason you didn't get distance is you're over 110 mph club speed, any flex doesn't help you, even myself with around 90 won't get anything out of this.
Seniors might see distance over regular or stiff, but they can just get an inexpensive flexible shaft and get the same benefit.
This shaft is show and tell, "I have money and waste it away because I have money.
thank you! and so good to hear your thoughts
I love my auto flex shaft it has transformed my driving
Well, after that last shot you were finally warm. So you should do the exact same test again and see what happens. Also, adjust the loft lower and test it again. Thanks for all the wonderful entertaining and informative uploads, cheers my friend...
You’re welcome!
Great video i dont think the extra money for the shaft is worth it however i would love to see a budget launch monitor review from urself as this is probley the next thing i will need for my home set up
I second that as it's my next purchase I think as well.
It definitely will be good to see you get a full bag fitting and then a full 18-hole round. And definitely needs to see more reviews
Interested how it would have reacted if you lofted that head down abit… I’m do think that trying to compare to completely different profile shafts at the same setting isn’t going to guarantee top performance from either. I have been fit before and had different loft and weigh positions recommended depending on the shaft I tried.
This is great idea! I really want to put this in the LS VERSION to I think that would be an awsome combo
Drop the loft, you will get more ball speed before going LS, also reduce the flex to the 505, if your a smooth swinger this shaft can cope. It’s not for the aggressive transitions- it’s a really good training aid. I had this and now I have gone to a ladies flex Grafalloy pro launch blue at 40grams (£50 shaft and it does roughly the same thing but needs around a degree less loft) . Try it, you may get a surprise 🤭@@HowGoodGolf
Similar comment as a guy below, the Qi has a swing weight of D4 with stock shaft, with the lighter AF that could be way up D6/7. For the AF to flex correctly the SW needs to be D1.5 (less on the slower swing shafts) to achieve that swing weight you'd have to reduce the head weight by a lot, it's that, that leads to faster swing speeds. Of course lossing rear weight on the 10K drivers would loss the 10K.(not that I believe its adjustable but if it where it'll drop out of 10K)
i had my fitter check the swing weight after switching out the stock shaft with the Autoflex 505X….and it came to 1.5. I don’t know where youre getting your data, but it’s wrong.
Good test, however, The Autoflex seemed to hit the ball higher leading me to think you could have decreased loft of the driver to equalize flights between the Kali and the Autoflex. In addition I saw a test where a TH-camr called something like "the Mobile Club Fitter" compared an Autoflex with a cheap shaft that had a similar weight and a similar bend profile; the cheap shaft performed as well as the Autoflex. From what I have seen I think the right shaft can make a significant difference and The Autoflex might be right but a less expensive alternative might be close to right.
Suggestion Alex, stock driver v upgraded shaft with older head at same value.
As a lefty, and live in a seaside town in Oz, I buy online and try. It is trial and error, but fun. I have a few "stock" shafts, currently game hzrdus yellow smoke. I also have the Ventus blue " not velocore". Im average 95mph swing speed so distance gains come from shot shape.
Keep up the good work, and enthusiasm....
Shafts I'd fit you with for this Qi10: 1. Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 70S or 60X; 2. Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ 60 S+ Flex; 3. UST Mamiya Proforce V2 Black 60g try the Regular flex then the Stiff.
Hi Alex, great content as always! the 301 yard last shot is probably due to a high in the face hence lower spin, compared to all previous shots. So far I'm not seeing a good number of pros using the pink thing, so I guess it isn't that good after all. Also there are other options much less expensive for those who prefer such a lighter shaft, and more stable than Autoflex. About other comments saying about tweaking and precise swing weight, well, any shaft would take benefit of doing a proper fitting.
That’s true! great suggestion🙌🏼
Really good comparison mate , absolutely brilliant!!!
It is shown that it does not make sense to change the shaft due to the price it has, what a hell !!!
Reason for extra yardage in last drive was the spin rate was down at 2200 , club head speed and ball speed was the same.
Really like these kind of comparison videos! What do the big yellow arrows in the video represent?
My understanding with the auto flex is it really does require being fit by a pro familiar with the shaft and requires a build slightly over what ever your standard is to maximize. I have seen guys in the forums get pretty significant gains, but it required a TON of tinkering with length and club head weight to get there, and I don't know if that's worth it after paying 600
Some people love the Autoflex shaft(s) and are positive it gives them easy distance, and some believe there are good alternatives that are either no upcharge shafts or cheaper less of an up charge option. If you are thinking about testing the autoflex in a lower spinning head you should look to test one or more of these other shafts that many consider good alternatives:
Deramax
Project X Evenflow (or Hzrdus Red)
Aldila Ascent (40 or 50)
Project X Cypher Black 2.0 (40 or 50)
Mitsubishi Vanquish 4
Fujikura Vista Pro 55
Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 40
Elido White 40
Fujikura Speeder NX 50
Fujikura Ventus Red (5 or 6)
KBS Max HL (45 or 55)
Miyazaki shafts are pretty good too. 😊
Looked like Autoflex was going way higher. I'm curious what the numbers would have been if you had turned the loft down a degree or so.
But very cool comparison
That’s true! and thanks
These days, stock driver shafts seem to be at least 90% as good as upgraded ones. Sure there is some advantage to upgrading, but is it really worth it? I myself paid the extra $100 for the Motore F3 mainly cause I though it looked the coolest 😂
Swings like a senior shaft ! I’ll take the stock shaft please !
It’s the real deal recently tried the XXS (which performs like an X-Stiff) version and was consistently 320+ at the sim with my same head and the dispersion was much tighter than my Tensei XS that I hit 305-310 tops
I have one and must say, easier to hit consistent drives with much less effort. I recommend if you have the budget
As a 90+ HC stock is perfect for me. Interested in the Qi10 now after this.
Alex
Try it with the BGT Brava shaft and also the TPT shaft which are cheaper than Autoflex. Also good to know what Ventus Velocore does as well
Smash factor looked a little low, so not catching it out of the middle. Would turn the loft down a degree to lower the spin. Now rehit some test shots. Also note that you need 50 swings to get the 'feel' of how the shaft loads. May want to ask TM what you can expect if you change the rear weight to lower spin, or add some lead tape just behind the face?
That’s a good point!
There’s a few videos out there of using significantly cheaper shafts (like the Motore) one flex down (like A flex instead of Reg or Reg instead of Stiff) that might produce similar results.
So i have an autoflex you need to have the swing weight to D2 to make it work right
I have never met a Graphite design shaft I didn't like... they are all very good
I've tried this shaft in a fitting and on the course. I am very consistent with my driver and lost it with this shaft. Luckily I was able to replace it
There is a fitter on TH-cam that duplicates the flex profile for under $100
The swing weight needs to be D1/1.5 for an SF505X shaft (check the website) so I presume it's no where near that, especially since you can't adjust the head weight properly with the max. Just a thought
An alternative at over half the price would be the Accra FX 3.0 in M0 flex. It's like swinging a fishig pole
I wouldn’t pay 1/10 of that price to hit it as straight(maybe a little less as shown in the video) to gain a couple yards. $50 to hit significantly more fairways and hit it at least as far; sure. This video shows how important it is to get fitted
Nicely done!
Certainly a bit high but it’s dead straight.
Maybe try it in a lower loft??
Great video!!
Would LOVE to see the new Ventus Black Velocore vs. Graphite Design VF.
Golf used to be about overcoming obstacles and scoring … now it’s about circumvention of those obstacles via technology … hey, everything changes. In 20 years this will be an antique and courses will be 10,000 yards long …😂
Autoflex a large assortment of shafts based on your club head speed. It definitely is soft but if you can sink it just right you can hit some serious bombs with it. 💣
I'd like to see what it does with someone with a much slower swing speed.
Does it come in different flex ratings?
Improvement from 200 to 215 yards might be worth more than improvement from 280 to 295 yards. To some folks, at least.
Great idea Dean!!! This is what I love to hear
I would like to see someone with a slower swing do a side by side comparison. The shaft having that much whip in it, might truly benefit senior player.
They need to be swing weighted quite differently to standard. Usually they spin up quite a lot more than standard too.
Yep, do it with an LS model and loft it down a little.
Launch angle seems really high for this.
Love the video. Could you please try the Graphite design tour AD VF or UB 6S with a low spin club head of your choice? thanks.
Yes for sure
Curiosity led me to look it up. £400+! Close down and delete search history before the wife gets a sniff!! :)🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Alex please test the Autoflex shaft in the TM Qi10 LS with a 8 degree loft head. That should be even longer .
Wow crazy expensive driver set up
Im more interested in the heads forgiveness then this shaft. Im sure you can get pretty much the same distances out of any aftermarket shaft but the dispersion is what I feel is important. If I hit it 280 with the stock shaft an extra 10yds isnt going to be a game changer for me, and I can spend that $650 on something else.
That’s probably true!
Turn that head down to 9 degrees with the autoflex and try that. You should get lower launch and better ball speed.
This is a great point. I can’t wait to try it in a LS head!!
Looks like the Pink panther drops the spin and increases launch due to shaft deflection.
If you get used to it the increase in distance will be greater.
With AF you need to get fit…found usually have to go down in loft and slightly lighter headweight and/or longer shaft to get to around D0 SW…and a lower spin version head would help higher swing speed players using AF
You should try a senior shaft. I think it could be close to the same as the auto flex for much less money!
This is an awsome idea James I am going to have to try this 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼☺️
Excellent test, but why did you do it with range balls?
I’m not losing my premium balls down the range 😂😂
Give a senior flex shaft a cool paint job, and call it Auto flex=sales genius 😂
Good Test! No use get expensive shafts!
I’ve got one, given me 5mph more swing speed. 15 yards carry. 245 to 260. Brilliant.
Love that it works for you!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@HowGoodGolf it does for some people not so for others. as you say it’s like marmite. I’ve got a slower swing speed than you, I’m a cat 1 golfer but swing it at circa 100-105mph max. Maybe that’s why. It’s definitely given me a lot more carry Because it’s light at only 50g & can swing it quicker.
@@HowGoodGolf at first I thought it was a senior flex it’s bonkers
I have one as well and love it. And help me gain an extra 10 to 15 yards
@@chetm12 at first I thought I can’t use it, going from a stiff 60g shaft to this. It felt like a ladies flex. I thought I’d be all over the place with it as it felt whippy. But wow. Spin numbers lower, more club head speed. Really impressive. I would definitely recommend if you want more club head speed & yardage.
Here is an interesting issue. A senior or lady flex shaft or a regular shaft compared to a stiff or extra stiff shaft is going to affect the position of the head at impact. Across the entire spectrum. There is forward and backward flexion but some degree of flexion in all directions. Very hard then to get a more flexible shaft to impact position. Likely all should use less flexible shafts. Do the physics. Think about it. Yes there is some spring effect but ball contact improvement likely should be the key to improve and play your best. Can’t do it if the shaft is going to be flexing in each different direction.
Two things about the video: - one it shows how good the stock shaft is; but two - the Autoflex gets you into the 300yds + drive club!
Haha that’s very very true!!
I have auto flex and love it. Question tho Alex. Did u swing weight driver to 1.5 to 2 swing weight Becoz that’s the recommended swing weight of this shaft. For it work properly
Yeah 🙌🏼
My 43 year old son hits 300 yards in his sleep, with an old TM burner!!!
For really expensive gear like that, in my opinion, it's almost never worth it. Even if it gives you 10 more yards on your drive (I don't suspect it will) it'd still be crazy to spend that much money on it. I'm eager to continue watching to see how you get on with it!
Let me know what you think of the end results…
@@HowGoodGolf It seemed a little disappointing, but you made a good point about looking at the LS head. Nobody buying the Max head would likely pay that much for a shaft. If you're only getting gains on the fringes, the upgrade will only appeal to better (or really good) players that can't find gains elsewhere. For me, a mid-handicapper, I'm sure I'd be much better served spending that money on lessons.
I'm gonna Bragg a bit here. just played our comp on Sunday.
about 20 of us play just 2 times a year, been doing it for 21 yrs now.
anyway,
been winning the long drive 4 times in a row now.
yesterday, hole 13 cape shank, 310m
I drove it onto the green, pin high, while the first group was still putting.
I'm 64, not a fast swing. but I use an old XXIO ,0011 stiff, 45g shaft.
I've been looking at upgrading my driver, but i'm
just wondering how much that shaft and in fact that driver would improve my distance? would it be worth the money?.
I used to soften my driver shafts and I ended up in nothing. Only up in the air with tons of spin. Now I have a stiff shaft with 39 gr of weight (project x) for about 150 pounds and I gain 20 yards and consistency
The Autoflex performs better with a lighter head weight according to instructions and other testing videos.
If I was spending that much money on a shaft I’d pay the extra to have it properly fitted and get the right swing weight and the right head / weighting.
Autoflex designed by Diamana? Is that correct?
Diamana is a line of shafts made by Mitsubishi Chemical.
Autoflex is Korean.company product
Alex is there much difference between the 425 and 430 7 wood , opinion please
7 months later at the end of the season how did it do for those that gamed it the entire time
Autoflex needs a bit of time to get used to, I’ve increased my swing speed about 5 miles/hour, you need to apply the power smoother and release later.. Fabulous shaft.
That’s true! maybe i need to give it more time
At 111 club speed surely you would be better with x flex? Would bring the spin down a bit? Thanks for the vid
True!
LS head. low loft setting. sf405 flex got me 325 yards total gaining 20 yards from my gamer setup
So get yourself a $38 shaft US and get fit. The 301 yard drive was the simulator error. 😂
How many extra yards to make it a decent investment? Look at it backwards, there are plenty of golfers out there willing to buy the latest new driver every year or two costing near the same amount for an extra couple of yards or they like the feel, look, forgivemess or whatever better than the current driver. Or simply for the sake of having something new and shiny in the bag.
i take it you didnt change the weighting in the head. That shaft needs at least 5-6 grams taken out of the head. The head for a 505x is around 190-192 grams. This changes the flex, spin and trajectory including club head speed.
A quality golf coach combined with a structured fitness program might be more advantages to your overall game.
Tour players dont bother with this, the couple that tried it out when it came out got rid pretty quick, thats enough for me to not even consider it, especially when Velocore and velocore tr are only £300 :D
I don't think I could justify spending $850 on shaft. The consistancy in which you hit it was pretty awsome numbers wise. I think I would rather buy something like a launch monitor. Just my opinion.
For the price, it should swing itself!!!!
My friend bought one for his titleist he loves it like I don't see any gains in his game with it like
Ahh really, yeah that’s what i mean with the distance i don’t really know if it’s worth the investment
for that swing speed i would be sad with the results. def suffering in smash factor/effec.
I am struggling to find a driver to suit me. My current driver is TM M1 which I currently hit approx 160 yards. However I have tried all the new products on the market this year but they go no further. I am a very accurate ball striker always hitting middle of club face even with the irons. I have tried numerous shafts to no avail. All the new products claim the ball will go further but that takes into account off centre hits. What would you suggest?
Hello Susan! Just keep working it Alex on the golf
Lessons. As we said today, it’s about getting more efficient in the hit 👍🏼👍🏼
put that shaft into the Wilson Dynapower Carbon
Test the Autoflex against the Brava shaft.
This is great shout Barry! Keep your eyes on the channel ❤️
I would bet a million dollars, it only cost less than $50 to make. MENTAL!
more videos like this please
when i was young and I was staring at a really beautiful woman, my dad said son, never look at what you can't afford. I feel the same about this shaft lol A decent return for that price would have to be at least 50 yards
You should Test it with a high and mind handicaper
I just wanna play golf. Give me a driver from 1999 with an X-Stiff steel Shaft, I’m happy.
Price means nothing without improvement. The question is how much someone will pay for smaller incremental improvement over less expensive equipment.
Hello You should find yourself a shaft with a slighty lower kick point! Thats togheter what you preformed today in a little cold weather should give you around 12 to 15 yards longer drives , your driver should be 10 grams heaviar than that expensive shaft! Many serius golfen absolute pay +500 £ for 12 to 15 real extra yards! If you are one of thoose, I dont No, but I think so Sir!
