    CYCLONIC AND ANTICYCLONIC MEANING:
98 percent or more of the world’s tornadoes rotate the same direction as Earth. When atmospheric motion rotates the same direction as the planet,
we refer to the rotation as being cyclonic. Thats counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere but clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Thus, these typical tornadoes are referred to as being cyclonic. But Every now and then a tornado spins the other way. We refer to these deviant tornadoes as anticyclonic.
    ANTICYCLONIC TORNADOES:
Most of the anticyclonic tornadoes I’ve observed were companions of a cyclonic tornado or rotation in a supercell. These rare tornadoes are often not anticipated and can sneak up on observers fixated on the more business end of the storm. Some anticyclonic tornadoes develop as smaller satellites orbiting around a parent tornado. Sometimes they manifest as landspouts in non-supercellular storms. Most of the cases I’ve observed developed in a predictable region of a right-moving supercell. But because of their infrequency, even trained observers may not anticipate these anticyclonic threats and thus may get caught off guard. In most cases the anticyclone threat is small, but not always. Recognizing the cloud patterns in this video may help a spotter anticipate anticyclonic tornado development.
    SIMLA COLORADO ANTICYCLONIC TORNADOES:
On June 5, 2015, Dr Anton Seimon & Dr. Tracie Seimon documented an extremely photogenic family of tornadoes near Simla Colorado, several of which were strongly anticyclonic. A huge thanks goes out to Anton and Tracie for allowing me to showcase their never-before-seen, beautiful captures.
    STRONGEST ANTICYCLONIC TORNADO:
Several anticyclonic F3’s have been documented on the original Fujita scale and on April 4, 1981, shortly after midnight, A violet anticyclonic tornado terrorized West Bend, Wisconsin. It injuring 53 people and ended the lives of three. This rare nightmare would earn an F4 rating. The most powerful anticyclonic tornado ever recorded.

That Joel Ewing should be honored with the Nobel Prize for /animal / humanitarian kindness...blah blah blah ha ha just kidding! Hey Hank, this is Joel Ewing! Geez....thanks much for putting my little cameo appearance in your vid....I had no idea! Yeah, that poor pup...this finally had a happy ending, but very literally the in-vehicle distraction he initiated almost caused us (trusty storm chase partner / cousin Doren Berge) and I to get killed when that BIG, long lived tornado that wasn't shown in this vid that was following us in this video (I had forgotten it was behind us) caused our vehicle to begin bouncing wildly up and down and back and forth sideways from it's violent inflow (dude....it was SO close for real) At this point we truly could not see the road in front of us to drive, and that big tornado just kept creeping up closer and closer to us. The hail and heavy precip had gotten the best of me, and I had to poke along with the driver's door open in pouring precip and insanely fast pitched big hail to try to keep us on the muddy road by watching the ditches on the road's sides. We thought we were goners.....it's the closest I have come to death by chasing in 35 plus years of doing this. That little mutt stray dog had initially come up to us whimpering and crying with abject fright. He was soaked, cold and the hail terrified him. I never saw him, but began feeling something groveling on top of my feet, and by instinct as a dog guy myself, I scooped the muddy little dude up without a thought and tossed him into my driver's seat. When we stopped filming the anti-cyclonic tornadoes, we went from farm house to farm house....nobody knew this dog at all. FINALLY....a long distance from where we scooped him up....we found the frantic farm owner who owned this pup and a happy ending was had by all. I DID give that farmer a gentle little scolding for NOT having a collar on his pup, and I meant it. My poor chase partner Doren just holds his breath now any time we happen to drive by any critter that looks like a stray animal as we blast around the alley. We've picked them up in Texas, Nebraska and other locales before, and have had happy endings each time, thank God. Hank...Anton....I KNOW you guys would do the same for any poor, stray animal....I just happened to beat you two to the puppy-grab this time! Thanks for putting me in your vid, Hank. I'm honored. joel ewing / tucson

Hey Joel, Dr. Tracie and Dr. Anton made sharing a slice of your story possible. Thanks for sharing more of your account here. Glad you guys and the pup survived. I was across the border in Kansas this day. Every report that trickled in from Simla made my stomach knot and added insult to injury, the Simla anvil overspread my target, killing my storm. I'm absolutely obsessed with meteorology, but I'm definitely fearful of tornadoes. Watching your videos has the same feeling to me as watching a scary movie!
Spring of '91 Andover KS- we noticed a strong storm coming in, my parents were roofing the house that day and only had ½ of the roof on when the sirens started to cry, my dad had a first hand look at the funnel cloud forming to the west as he was hurrying to tarp the roof. He yelled for all of us to get into the closet and mom to open the windows in the house (at that time we thought that would equalize the pressure in the house) My dad grabbed the matress off of my bed and we huddled in the hall closet under it. We heard what I could only describe as the loudest wind I've ever heard, so loud it sounded like a freight train!
We emerged from the closet thankfully safe, and with only vehicle and sidding damage! That tornado claimed the lives of 21 people and was an EF5!

I know I’m late to the party, but that sounds horrifying. I’m glad y’all were all safe and with so little damage to your home! I remember being about 7 or so years old growing up in Arkansas, and there was a night that we had to make a run for the storm shelter. There was a tornado in the field behind my grandparents’ house with golf ball sized hail. We had to run in the direction of the ‘nader to get to the storm shelter, and as a small child, running TOWARDS it was traumatizing for me. I know when I’m under a lot of stress in my adult life when I start having nightmares about tornadoes. I can’t imagine experiencing something like what you went through!

    *Czech viewer's perspective and story:*
I've been following your channel for a couple of years as I've always been fascinated by tornadoes. I never considered them a real danger in my country (in the middle of Europe), tornadoes were "the big ones happen only in America" kind of a thing, but I always took interest in your videos explaining how they form, the structure of storms, accompanying weather phenomena etc. I live and work in Prague, but my family lives in the region of South Moravia, Hodonin district. This summer we'd had some severe thunderstorms. On the 24th ofJune I was looking at an online rain forecast, planning my evening activities. The radar showed a huge incoming complex of strong storms spanning across our whole country. I told to myself "damn, this looks nasty", because they looked like real supercells and a thought "if I'd live in the US, I would be afraid that there could be a tornado" actually did cross my mind. That evening, I called my mum, to chat about how my family was doing. My mum told me that a huge storm was coming. That the air "felt weird", that she had never experienced anything like that before a storm. They have also seen some "strange clouds" and she described mammatus clouds to me. I could hear thunder rumbling over the phone. Then I heard my father come over to my mum and tell her with a grave voice that a strong tornado had just completely levelled a nearby village to the ground. My father is a retired firefighter, so he got the news immediately, probably when the tornado was still on the ground. It reached the strength of EF4, destroyed 5 villages and killed 6 people, its path was 26 kilometres long and at some stages it reached a width of 500 metres. It stopped 15 km from the village where my family lives. If you'd climb the hill behind our house, you could actually see it. Some of my father's former coworkers lost their homes or were injured. Most of the people had no clue what was coming, because no one thought such a strong tornado could happen in our country. We don't have any tornado warning system, no tornado shelters. So you can find some crazy footage on youtube from people who shot "a strong storm" on their phones from their balconies, not knowing they are staring at an EF4 tornado coming right at them, not knowing that they should hide... I can tell you, expecting a storm won't ever be the same here!
Thank you for your great content, Hank! I told my family everything I could about possible warning signs and what to do if they see them. Since then, they've actually felt the weird air once more before a strong storm and thought they'd seen a rotating wall cloud forming.... well, we hope South Moravia won't become a European tornado alley, but one can never know.

I wonder if a tornado has ever been spotted right on the equator, and in which rotational direction?

    • @deralbtraum5717
      @deralbtraum5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@chriskennedy2846 Of course, and the rotational direction is everywhere random so to say. I mean, in the USA the wind from the gulf and the second from West have mostly the same angle, so the tornado has mostly the same rotation direction. But in Europe as an ecample, the could twist right or left. Its not like Hurricans, they dont exist on the equator and have always the the same direction.
In reallity, anticyclone is something completely different. The red spot (or how it calles in english) on jupiter is an anticlone. Hurricanes or Tyfoons are cyclones, in its center is low air pressure, in the center of an anticyclone is a highly pressure area (on earth anticlones are not really impressive)

Hank is slowwwly becoming one of the more important science communicators out there. The reason being, this stuff is right on the very cutting edge of atmospheric research…what’s more important than our atmosphere when it comes to survival? Not much, when you REALLY think about it. On top of that, he’s got a knack for breaking this stuff down for a general audience.
When I first got into this stuff as a kid back in the 90s, we knew almost none of what you hear nowadays on extreme weather channels. We heard about converging air masses, updrafts and little more. The wealth of data that’s been shared in the last 20 years is almost mind boggling…

As a flight instructor I guess I think of this like moving your flat hand through water and watching a whirlpool form behind where your hand was, then the equal and opposite reaction is the liquid spinning off in the other direction as a direct result. I notice this when watching the tide come in and out at the beach. I imagine air behaving exactly like water now when I fly and teach new students. Enough about me, I LOVE this channel. Such amazing content. I wish you could have seen the microburst I was in the middle of at Orlando Executive Airport yesterday. A student lost their life because the plane was flipped over. On June 3, 1980, 3 anti-cyclonic tornadoes hit the city of Grand Island, NE from a stalling supercell. 2 of these were on the ground at once and one of those ended up getting an F-3 rating as it damaged a hospital and destroyed other buildings around it.
This was part of a larger outbreak that produced 7 tornadoes in and around the city.

While anticyclonic tornadoes can be weaker than some of the mammoth wedges and tubes that Hank has seen before, don't ever underestimate them. There's no such thing as a minor tornado if you're in one!
Towards the end of the video, Hank touched on the strongest anticyclonic tornado ever recorded - it hit my home state over by West Bend - it's believed to have been of F4 intensity and there was little to no warning (it also struck around midnight).

*There's no such thing as a minor tornado if you're in one!*
As someone who's had a low-end F1 come out of the night with no warning and score a direct hit on her in a pickup truck ... fully agreed. Tornadoes look a lot more awesome from the outside than the inside. (Hell, even a strong dust devil can be pretty scary.)

Omg the Tri state tornado was beaten last night as far as the longest running tornado ever. One tornado tracked over 235 miles last night through Ark, Tenn, Mississippi and Kentucky beating the tri state of 219 miles. It's the quad state tornado. Fortunately doesn't sound like the there were many deaths involved. But holy cow was last night intense. Thanks to you Hank I was able to identify certain things about the storm as it passed over. It was a HP storm mode but I was able to see enough to keep my family safe. Can't wait for your next video hank. Happy trails.

OK - if we follow what Leigh Orf has been postulating for a while, then the conclusion is that the RFD is an EFFECT of a very strong updraft that produces the tornado, but not the CAUSE of the tornado’s appearance or strengthening. The anticyclonic tornado is another effect of that updraft and the subsequent/must-occur downdraft that follows it. The dry ice experiments show this rather well - you can’t have a strong updraft without a corresponding downdraft, and that happens BEHIND the storm that is producing the updraft - the anticyclonic rotation is observed commonly to the south of a right-moving tornadic supercell in the northern hemisphere due to the Coriolis effect. Therefore, the RFD surge correlates with, but does not cause, tornadoes to drop or strengthen. What it really indicates is that the storm has just taken a big breath in the front - an inhalation! That includes inhaling the vorticity, in tornadic supercells. The RFD is the exhale - out the back. You get the human anatomical analogy. :-)
Some strong tornadoes have no RFD.
I really like Leigh’s theory here - it’s mostly about sucking up the vorticity ahead of the mesocyclone as the storm eats unstable air in front of it!
Hank - thanks so much. Why have you been so quiet lately?
