We look the same. No that wasn't what I was going to say. Wonderful you reacted to Depeche, they where very in my life late 80's and are one of the go to bands still today. This is is first time I see you and you mentioned Siouxie, so I'll probably watch more. Hugs from Sweden.

Depeche Mode is about the sound. If there are 5 "best" bands over the last 40 years, Depeche Mode is one of them. You could spend the next few weeks doing just Depeche Mode songs and videos.

When they first got together and really hadn't talked about a name for the band they got there first gig and were asked about it...... there was a French magazine on the table called Depeche Mode and that just sounded good for the moment not thinking it would actually be their name.

Depeche Mode. pecheur = fisher, mode = style or fashion.
Means broadly, captured or picked clothing, therefore the equivalent expression in British English is 'fast fashion' or 'off the peg', meaning like fast food or 'ready-to-wear'.

A 'depeche' in French can also be a press release or a bit of news made public - so fashion news, fashion newsflash that type of thing.

Depeche, it's a french word, stands for news, like "La depêche de midi", but it also stands for quick, like "Depêche-toi", hurry up.
But it was the name of a magazine, Depêche mode, which was a magazine about mode (la mode), style, dress...

Have you ever heard It's No Good off of Ultra? Ultra is a great album. It's one of my faves by Depeche Mode. There are some great songs along with Enjoy The Silence. I Feel Loved, Free Love and its remixes, Strangelove, Personal Jesus, are just a few of many of their songs but those are some of the more uptempo tracks. They are very musically dynamic and deep.

Not as early as 82. It was recorded in 1989 and released as a single in the UK in 1990

Martin Gore: "It's just about a feeling of not wanting anything else, feeling totally satisfied, and even the words and everything seem an intrusion. You don't need anything else, you're totally happy. It's a nice song, it's nice, that's a way to put it, it's nice."
Dave Gahan: "And that's why, if you notice, in the video, you'll see that I only sing one line in the whole thing every now and then, repeatedly: "Words are very unnecessary". Because you got all these beautiful scenes, beautiful photography everywhere, and you look at this fantastic photography, so words [are unnecessary], and I'm a king, obviously, I'm supposed to have everything."
    - Martin Gore, Dave Gahan - MTV 120 Minutes
So, originally the demo for ['Enjoy The Silence'] was just me singing along to a basic pad. And it was really Alan [Wilder] and Flood who suggested that we speed it up and put a beat to it. And I was dead against it. I remember, because I thought it went completely against the aesthetic of the words and the meaning behind the song. So, I sulked off for a little bit [...] So, when I came back, yeah, it had a basic drum pattern and the baseline[sic] and that was all. And I still wasn't convinced. But Flood said to me, 'Could you just try playing some guitar along to it?' So, I played along and then I came up with a guitar line for it. And then the kind of choir part. And then it kind of started making a bit more sense to me.
I'd like to take this moment to apologize to Alan and Flood.[1]

Hi John thoroughly enjoying your reactions to these old tunes, love this Depeche Mode track. I would like to suggest my own personal favourite band The Stranglers with Down in the sewer, the closing track from their 1977 debut album Rattus Norvegicus. As a bass player yourself I think you'll enjoy their sound. Love, light and peace, Paul from bonnie Scotland.
