Your channel has some of the best filmmaking tutorial vids on the web. The time and effort you take to show the how and why of various processes is engaging and informative. Maybe I am just a sucker for background music, but your format really seems to work for me. WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP!
I would like to add something that I think would dramatically reduce your render time. Rather than using AE which is fairly heavy with all sorts of things that you really don't need in a timelapse (unless the goal is to add a bunch of odd effects that i have yet to see be used in a professional way anyways), switch to premiere pro instead. Importing is easy as you can pick either to import a sequence of images (in which case Premiere will make a single file out of it in premiere) or import all pictures and simply make sure to set the framerate for the images to 1 (easily done by selecting all images, right-clickling and adjust time there BEFORE dragging everything to the timeline). Once you have done that its just drag and drop onto the timeline and you have a finished timelapse. It is also easier to do any additional colorgrading in Premiere as those filters/effects (whatever you want to call them really) is much easier to find. I like AE and have used it a bit, but generally for this kind of work i find it to be rather bulky compared to premiere.
Been wanting to fine places around Charlotte to get a better view of the skyline. The Green Deck is too close to the uptown buildings and has a hotel being constructed now. So looking out towards CPCC is a great idea. I work in downtown and love its look at night. Great tutorial for me now to go and make one myself. Keep up the good work!
Hi Rob & Jonas, After watching this video a few weeks back I bought the 'LR Time-lapse 4' software and couldn't be more impressed with it. This video is a godsend if you just want to jump straight in and get to work with it. I love filming time-lapses and have only just recently become a convert to RAW-NEF from jpegs. After completing my first 12 hour time-lapse using RAW, I can definitely see the benefits in post production using Lightroom, LR Time-lapse 4 and FCPX. I've even gone back to earlier time-lapses, converted the images from jpeg to dng so I can further clean up my images in post-production following the steps you've outlined here. I do have a question regarding music, I've looked around for free music I can use for my personal projects and even though I have been able to use classical pieces older than 70 years, I would like to move to more modern music similar to the styles you have displayed in your pieces. Is there a particular website you can recommend to get free music for personal/ non profit projects or do you mix your own music? Any tips or suggestions you or anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work guys!
you are doing great tutorial ,, im completely new in time lapse thing ,, i've been doing some landscape nightscape/ long exposure shot like northern lights and a little bit of portraiture .. but i really wanna try this time lapse as my new project.. thank you so much for sharing your awesome technique.... love it..

Thanks as always Rob. My 2 cents is use manual when possible, but with the upgraded deflicker in LRTimelapse I use Aperture almost exclusively in daytime. Don't think I could have done that in Jan 2016 but Gunther (LRTIMELAPSE guru) has really made things much easier.

I think if you change the exposure(maybe slightly change the shutter speed) once over every couple of frames it should be fine. You have to remember that if the raw is slightly under or over exposed thats fine cuz you can fix that in Lightroom or whtvr. So I think if you be careful you can avoid flickering.
I spent $200 bucks and bought the Timelapse+ to do bulb-ramping and motion control. Would love to see you guys do a tutorial using one of those tethered to a full 3-axis motion control rig. Something like the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero and NMX controller :) Hintedy hint hint.

Yes it would but that would entail some major changes and why not just use LRT. Just because you don't use the other functions, for whatever reason, you think everyone else should be restricted to your vision??? or lack there of. Give your head a shake.
Peter Curley Well maybe it needs some major changes. If you seriously are concerned about Lightroom's shocking interpretation of it's other functions then maybe you should be shaking your head in shame.
LR Timelapse....I downloaded the trial version and it IS intimidating for sure lol.....Especially the back and forward actions between Lightroom and LR Timelapse dazzles my brain. I understand now why they call this the "Holy Grail Timelapse" because it's not only the final result but also the long road you need to walk in order to get to it. I read there are also holy grail timelapse motion controls that automatically increase exposure times for you. This way you avoid the flickering right? And you can just use Lightroom and Apple Quick Time PRO right after the colour correcting and merge all single files into the final video....
+Lutte Kikker - well, there are many ways to get your end result. Give yourself 2 or 3 hours and I think you can master this. I tried to walk you through it with a slightly different approach than Gunther. His tutorials are GREAT though, but sometimes you need a different take on it. Watch both and I think you're set. Oh, and those automatice controls are nice, but not necessary. You can get rid of flicker in LRtimelapse.
If this has already been asked I apologize, but I didn't want to read all 251 comments. Could Michelle have brought hers into LR Time-lapse even though she used aperture priority and achieved the same results, without having to manually adjust the settings?

Definitely going to use LRTL from now on, seems so right. I wanted to ask for your advice / input on how to apply all of this in a day to night TL I am planning this weekend in the desert. Will aperture priority still work? I mean ISO and exposure time will change dramatically...Starting from just before sunset going to complete darkness, I will finish at about 30 sec exposure to make sure I get the stars and the milkyway...so it is a little different from the city scenario... Thanks in advance and please keep up this amazing work !

It took 3 hours to shoot and at least 3 hours to post process. The processing only takes time because each step can be slow for the computer.

Wow I live in Charlotte too, i have also been on top of that same parking garage to see the fire works and do a semi long exposure for the fireworks.

Nice Video, but you shouldn't use the sync function lightroom provides. Since lrtimelapse 4 you should use the sync scrip gunther has developed ;)
