Awesome work. One of the most impressive things about your work is that it doesn't look like you ever really use the most expensive lenses like SO many other professional photographers use. I've always found it funny all the pro's preaching how "gear doesn't matter" while they're setting up a shot with a $5,000 camera and $2,000+ lens. Your videos always remind me that it's more about the person and the know how and the trial and error that makes a great photographer, not the gear(though it doesn't hurt to have some good gear lol).
Thanks for the tips for shooting storm clouds. Will be out this storm season in Australia chasing super cell storms and will be having a go at doing time lapses of them.

I noticed you usually don't shoot with a hood. I'm looking at the wide Whitney shot and I just can't help but worry about lens flares. Really like this lesson, great work MS.
You mean the bird shot? That was at about 200mm and the sun wasn’t in the sky, so no flare to worry about. But yeah in general if I am using filters, I don’t have the ability to have a hood on the camera, so it’s kinda one or the other type of situation.

I have a Sony A7III and the Tamron 28-200mm (which I love and bought after seeing you and Mads using it!), and I was wondering what size Kase filters you use? Do you pick them for your largest current lens, or did you have another thought in mind when you chose the size?
Any tips on what you do to reduce milky way timelapse flicker through LR Timelapse Michael? I'm shooting with an A7iii. I've cut back my workflow to only use basic adjustments in Lightroom as I saw some of the LR Timelapse tutorials mention the colour flicker that can be introduced if you use things like clarity or dehaze but I still get crazy flicker in the shadows going from green to magenta across different images with the exact same camera and processing settings.

I recently took a timelapse in the mountains with nice storm clouds, in some moderate wind. I was bummed when I got home and looked at the footage: it's all wobbly! Do you still use your Dynamic Perception slider for TL? I'm wondering about alternatives since DP is no longer in business. Their controller is app-based, which is problematic.
I haven't used my DP Stage One Plus in the field in a long time, but the app still works on IOS 16, if you still have it installed. It's no longer in the App Store. The Black Forest PINE controller will work in place of the NMX and gives some additional functionality. They aren't cheap but may be less than investing in a completely new system. I'm considering getting one.
S&Q mode is great for casual timelapses where you want the camera to give you the completed project as soon as it stops recording. If you want more control over the creative process you need to use the Interval Shooting function to take raw photos and then compile and edit them in post.
S&Q is fine if you need a quick timelapse and are not too concerned with the quality. I had done a few S&Q broll time-lapses for a few of my vlogs when I was too lazy to set up a legit timelapse. But you won't get near the same dynamic range, resolution (on most cams except the A7S), or control over timing and settings. The Night Sky timelapses also will not work with that FPS.
Did not quite follow you on stating interval needs to be set at 22 seconds if you are shooting a 20 second exposure. Interval is time between shots and not dependent on shutter speed. I shoot astro all the time with an average 10 second exposure with a 2 second interval so buffer has time to record between shots. Looks like you where in Alabama Hills, beautiful place.
@@kerrykroberts7809 How you set your interval is completely dependent on which remote or mechanism you are using to trigger the shutterspeed. Some might allow you to set it to 2 even if your shutter is longer. But for most of my remotes/methods I have used over the years I am required to account for the shutterspeed in the interval itself, so it’s not just the time in-between exposures. It’s the time in-between + exposure time to avoid skipping frames and causing issues.
Hey thanks, this is just my experience, but In the 15 years I have shot timelapse photography I have never had a shutter or sensor go out because of taking too many images. I have broken 5 cameras in my career, but never because of timelapses.

I use the 82mm filter set and then just have different magnetic thread sizes for my 72mm and 67mm lenses :)

At 1:37, when you zoomed in, on the left, it looks like the Buddha sitting on the cloud. At 1:53 he's centered. Kool!

You can shoot in most places at night, just check each parks website regulations and see whats allowed.

Which camera brand you use for your TH-cam video brother?
If the lens is set on auto focus but you do back button focus, won’t that hold focus as well? TY
That would probably work, but I would test it out before doing a timelapse in field that way.
Do you ever let the camera create the time lapse internally or do you always take all the photos out and create it manually?
I always do it via RAW files and then make the time-lapses myself.

I haven't used mine in a long time. I will probably go out and buy another system, the Rhino slider looked interesting.

I love these timelapses, but I worry it's going to significantly reduce the lifespan of the camera (and the resale value of said camera).
