  • TOP 3 MAYAN RUINS in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
My top 3 ruins sites in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
    1. CALAKMUL
Calakmul is definitely my top choice of Mayan ruins in Mexico. Below are a few facts why it is so special:
    - Calakmul is only 22 miles from the Guatemala border
    - Calakmul is one of the most structure-rich sites within the Maya region.
The great pyramid at the site is over 45 meters high, making it one of the tallest of the Maya pyramids with the most spectacular views (for comparison, Chichen-Itza is 30m high)
    - Calakmul is quite remote and “non-touristic” place, for example, compared with Chichen Itza which gets about 7000 people a day visiting, Calakmul ruins gets about 60 people a day
    - The amount of wild animals you can see - wild turkeys, tropical birds, tarantulas, wild pigs, spider monkeys, howler monkeys and more
    - Declared a UNESCO World heritage site in 2002 for cultural and environmental significance
    - You can climb on pyramids in Calakmul, at least for now. But it might change in future as more visitors come around
    2. UXMAL
    - Uxmal is a UNESCO World heritage site
    - The present name is derived from Oxmal, meaning “three times built”
    - The estimated population of 20,000 people is a rough guess.
    - Pyramid of the Magician is a height of 35m
    - Queen Elizabeth II visited this ruins In 1975 for the inauguration of the site’s evening sound & light show.
    3. Chichen Itza
The most famous site in Mexico. Chichen Itza breaks single-day record for visitors on December 29, 2020 with 18,696 visitors. It was the day we were there
